Thanks for watching How to Socialize a Puppy Before Vaccinations! Which activity are you going to do with your puppy to improve their socialization skills?
@How To Train A Dream Dog We have a 9month old pup who is travel sick and HATES the car. How do we deal with this. Travel sick tablets don't work on him
I have a 15 month old Lab/Pit mix. I have been walking Solo in different directions around my neighborhood so he can get exposed to different sounds and hearing other dogs barking at him. I have adults or kids just say hi to him to help his social skills. Your video is very friendly and easy to follow. Thank you for your video.
This sounds great, I was worried my 4month old Maltese is not getting enough socializing but now I am happy as he is comfortable with all of the stuff you mentioned. Play date is a great idea, I need to check with my neighbors.
We do puppy play dates! we have 2 litter mates and their sister lives close to us. We have a barbecue with our friends and they get to play with their sister. So good for all 3 pups, and also adorable to watch.
You are just the best. I love your sense of humor. The way you are around dogs is so inspiring to me, it hits home. They are something special and I really appreciate having you to relate to as I pursue my CCPDT certification. My puppy comes home in a week and a half, too! 🤍
We took our pup to the building supply store nearby, not only did she get a car ride but a visit with two friendly employees and time to explore all the scents of the outdoor supply area. A plus for everyone!
Thank you for the well thought out explanation! I’m so happy to know that my doggie can have play dates with 2 vaccinations. This makes the time of not being allowed to touch other dogs a lot shorter.
Guys, I swear it's not that easy, I thought I was gonna nail being a dog mom but it's harder than you think especially since mine is only a baby he doesn't listen as much and he pee's everywhere and potty and pad training is soooo hard. So trust me ik it's amazing to have a puppy but you have to be ready.

Hi there! What would you suggest as the best way to have your pup in the car on the way to these socialization trips? At 8-12 weeks should we be crating them in the car or using a dog seat/harness?
From the research that I’ve done, a car/travel crate is the safest option. The second safest is a crash tested car harness. A car/travel crate is much different than a regular wire crate. Professionals say that a wire crate is even more dangerous than just letting your dog sit in the car. Wire can be bent very easily and can injure a dog very badly. I recommend RuffLand crates or a Kurgo car harness.
Thanks so much for the vacuum cleaner intro. I am a foster dog parent and struggle with this with every dog. Since we dont know the backgrounds it is hard to get over that one. I have a very young puppy 9 weeks old in foster care now and I will use this tip. Also the socialization trips are a great as well. Thanks for the videos. So glad I found your channel
I loved most of the things about the video, except for one thing. There is no such thing as reinforcing fear, you simply cannot reinforce an emotion, and there will be more damage done if a dog is not comforted during a stressfull time. Comforting is helping the dog to make a connection that the experience doesn't have to be all that bad, and that nice things happen during the experience. Otherwise, the puppy not only is still seeing the experience badly (cause the are no signs of it being in any way positive), it will be as scared as before or even more, and even a dog may not see their owner as their protector anymore, and won't seek out for guidance of their owner if in need, and won't be able to deal with their future problems and emotions Other than that I'm glad I learned that puppy class in not all about puppies playing, I will definitely be more selective about the instructors

Since we don't have any pet friendly places near my house (other than a PetCo), I was planning on driving to the local retail plaza, parking my car up front, opening the back of my car, and just sitting with my puppy as people and cars pass by and treating for just watching and not barking/growling/lunging at anyone
Yep! That's a great idea. Just make sure your dog is curious but not fearful or anxious about the interaction. If he appears stressed, get further away.
I really like the advice about shopping carts and going to a store in general, but I'm afraid she might want to pee and she won't know how to show me that, and we might end up with an accident inside the store. Do you have any advice for that?
If you can give the dog a chance to take a potty break before you go, or in an unused corner of the parking lot, that would probably be best. Just take some paper towels and a poo bag with you and even if there's a little mess, it's very easy to clean up in stores.
Would it be ok to put puppy in a stroller and walk around the neighbourhood to get them familiar with sounds/smells/ people/other dogs before they are fully vaccinated?
While stollers may sound like a good idea, we don't recommend this technique. If your pup becomes scared of the things they see or here they have no way of getting away from those scary things because they are strapped into a stoller. This means we are forcing them to face their fears. This will create a negative assoication that can last a lifetime. The better way to work on socialization and exposure training is to take it slow and watch your dog for body language that indicates they are ready to move closer or further away from scary stuff. Take a look at this video for more info ua-cam.com/video/5jxUUyyXwZA/v-deo.html

Until the puppy has had some training and practice being calm, it's best not to let kids meet her. This will make her behavior stronger. When you're carrying him you're taking away his ability to get distance from scary things, and you're not able to notice his subtle body language changes that indicate stress. It's best to allow him the agency to explore on his own, in safe areas like parking lots or sports fields. The key to exposure training is that it must be positive to be beneficial.

One thing I'm wondering though is, before all vaccines, is it safe to let the puppy on the ground or floors where other dogs and people may have carried parva in on their paws/shoes? My breeder is very adamant about not doing that.
I have taken my puppy to meet dogs who I know are vaccinated and a new puppy who is her age. Why is My Dog So Afraid: ua-cam.com/video/mgPViZGH3sY/v-deo.html
I'm sorry but I really don't agree with the fact that you can reward a puppy for being afraid. The way I understand it, It's possible to reward (or punish - but don't) behaviors, but not feelings. Other than that, I thought the video was excellent. Lots of really great tips :)
We are not rewarding the fear, because you are correct, you cannot reward a feeling. Rather, we are creating a positive association with the people, places and things the puppy is sacred of through the process of desensitization and counter conditioning.
@@HowToTrainADreamDog you just mention in the video that we dont want to reward them for being scared, and I just wandered, because I understood that to be impossible ;)
If I don't have a car, can I walk my 3 month puppy with second round of shots to a playdate with a 6 months old puppy with all his shots, a two blocks away?
This may be too stressful for your pup and the other animals. We recommend observing other animals from a distance first before getting up close and personal with them.

@@HowToTrainADreamDog awesome 💯😎 thanks
I'm still confused but I think I get it. I'll just carry her to wherever she needs to be socialized to until she gets her vaccinations :)
You can also do this from the car!
@@HowToTrainADreamDog Really?
Treating when music making is happening
can i take my puppy out with only first set of shots
If I don't have a car, can I walk my 3 month puppy with second round of shots to a playdate with a 6 months old puppy with all his shots, a two blocks away?
To be safe, it may be best to carry or get a travel bag.
Visiting a petting zoo ? Greetings from Holland
This may be too stressful for your pup and the other animals. We recommend observing other animals from a distance first before getting up close and personal with them.
