@@Agaetis181 Yeah the last time I saw them live he tried to sing it like this but he couldn't hit the high notes :( It was sad but it was still beautiful.
I know this was posted 16 and 8 years ago but I just wanted to say I wholeheartedly agree, this is by far my favourite live vaka version and my undiagnosed autistic ar$e was listening to this on repeat in my teenhood. Vaka is hands down my all time favourite track - everything from music, vocals to the music video - if you're here still in 2022 i appreciate you. that is all.
Any artist who doesn't try to captivate and stays true to what they believe is great, turns out, they are genius. These guys, performances like this, is pure genius. And I cannot comprehend any single human who does not appreciate their passion, his voice, this song. I just want to thank them.
I remember watching this live the night it aired. I forget what show it was though? But I remember just being _transfixed_ and in awe. Had never heard of the band before. Afterwards, I literally had to turn off the tv....and just go lie down....to think, and feel. I felt changed as a human being. I kept thinking 'who the fuck _was_ that band??' It sent me down a journey that genuinely altered my perception of music and life itself. This isn't my favorite track of theirs(but it's close), but being it was the first thing I ever heard from them....boy does it hit hard every single time I hear it. What a song....the sense of aching yearning almost physically hurts.
I almost cry every time I watch this. I've seen them live twice and its amazing how dead silent a Sigur Ros crowd is during the music. Everyone is just hypnotized.
This sounds exactly like the studio version!! God I hope I get to see them live in my lifetime! Jonsi is up there with Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke, Damien Rice and ANOHNI when it comes to vocalists who I feel don’t get enough praise. Just beautiful.
The passion he puts into this is explosive....check out from 5.09....and look at him hes giving it all...the viens on his neck...incredible...still makes me wana cry
This song and this band change me everytime i listen to them. Everytime their songs reach a climax i stop what i am doin and go back to times in my life where i was truly happy. Hopefully there are more of those times to come. We live in a sad world though
I wish they had a studio version of this where Jonsi sang that 2nd half like this.... Easily the best version, here, even with a few sour/off notes from the strings - which have become part of it, now that I've listened to it so many times
This is definitely one of the things that makes the live performance so rare/special. I saw them do it the other night, and Jonsi--49 years old now--still sounds exactly like this. His voice ripped over an entire orchestra. I've seen them 5 times and still couldn't believe it.
because there are no lyrics, this is the soundtrack to every loss I go through. There are so many memories tied to this song and that's what makes good music because good music to me is about conjuring memories and emotions. I love sigur ros :)
This is one of a handful music videos on UA-cam that actually makes me cry every time I see and hear it... this is heartbreakingly beautiful. And I fully agree that it is the very best live performance of "vaka" found anywhere. As a fan commented under a live bo****leg version of "Fly" by Nick Drake: "This is the best version of anything I've ever heard".
Es increible, cómo puede ser que exista una cancion así. Si alguien pudiese pedir la mejor cancion existente nunca se imaginaría que podría ser tanto. Cómo puede ser que personas tan jóvenes hagan musica tan sabia y madura? ... es inpensable
A loss that I suffered 7 years ago just resurfaced into my being just recently. August 16, 2007, my world turned dark when my friend passed away. Before he died, I should have said what needs to be said and tell him how much he meant to me. Even though I made peace with him through his death, this song resonates my sorrow and the pain that burrowed deep within my soul. Rest in Peace, Timmy Rudd.
***** Thank you for your healing words. Today is seven years since the angels called him home. I like to think everytime I speak to him, a breeze flies past me, as if he were answering to me
Whether I´m sad or not, I allways come back to this video. This music, and particullary this version, touches me inside in a way I cannot express in words and I don´t understand a single word in Jonsi´s mouth. I live for things like these, tank you Sigur Rós.
He doesn't sing words in a normal context. They don't mean anything (or they mean just what you want them to mean). It is a made up language, used mainly on the ( )-album, called Volenska or Hopelandic in english. "It’s nonsense-singing, designed to convey the absence of meaning. A blank slate for the listener to conjure their own significance." It really makes you to just listen. The voice is "just" another instrument, and it's perfect.
This is one of the greatest, if not the greatest song a mankind ever made! It's so raw and emotional while still being so perfectly well planned and composed. Every time I listen to this song it sends shivers down my spine. It's one of those songs I'll never forget in my whole life. It gives me hope when I'm down, while putting me in a melancholic mood at the same time. This is ART! Thank you Sigur Rós. I hope I'll have the honor of attending one of your concerts one day!
they are amazing, first time i ever listened to them, i cried, i thank the person for the rest of my life for showing me a diff. kind of music. i will love him for the rest of my life.

Fully agree. I've watched this video so so so many times and I still get chills at that bit at the end. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever, and this video makes it even better.
It's a Yamaha Portasound Vss-30 it's almost like a toy keyboard that you can record samples of your voice in to then change the pitch and distort it and stuff. I've been looking all over for them. So hard to find! they're pretty old.
so original, yet so powerful emotionally. i usually find music that's completely original takes a bit of getting used too before it really speaks to you but this is amazing!
Powerful!! outstanding performance incredible voice !! makes me feel so many different emotions is tremendous!!! is very addictive could listen over n over :)
I recently got their new Heim/Hvarf which has this song acoustic long, along with 5 originals and 6 of their old songs done live and acoustically. amazing.
I saw you standing there The tear you had was remarkable I gave you my hand You took it The sun shined on you Gave you hope Rest now, my friend.... just rest.... forever These words flow around my mind when I hear this... magnifizent and powerfull song. I simply love it
i never got the album (sorry sigur i downloaded it off a mate). wats the deal with little album booklet? I plan on doing a cover one day if im game enough (prolly not). i can sing in that range ok too. i "hear" what theyre saying but im not sure how to do it....
I've seen this live a lot of times. Jonsi's voice is sublime, especially at 5.10. I love Sigur Ròs and their music... it seems like a dream. This live in particular is beautiful, better then the studio version, in my opinion.
this is a powerfulll song it really makes you think ..GREAT PERFORMED LIVE he gets so into it , perfect !!!!! it does make me think of death though and destruction but Calm at the same time :/
All songs on the untitled album are this way, but not all of their songs. They use mixture of Icelandic and Vonlenska,(Hopelandic) Jónsi's created language, in a majority of their recorded songs.
@Dandybear There are no lyrics for this song. The language they sing in okay is not really a language but they call it "Hopelandic", you can sing whatever you want to, i think! :)
I have one more argument - look out fourth track from this album of Sigur Ros named "Untitled 4" aka "The Nothing Song". Don't you see any resemblances?:)
Everyone in the audience had a life changing experience after listening to this. No doubt. Would have been amazing to see that.
You shine on and on in my eyes.
I agree
I think this is the most powerfull live version of VAKA available to watch
yes indeed vienna audio is awesome
See Live on Walt Disney 2017, maybe The Second most Powerfull
jonsi can't hit Those notes anymore so he sings it differently so this is one of the few recordings of the actual ending

Just speechless. This song always makes me cry. For me it says "You saw the light" and "You're shining alone"
At the end I hear. "You shine on and on in my eyes."

one of the best live performances i have ever seen, not many bands put their hearts into their music like these guys
this uncredible song reminds me the perfect moment when i became a father...and where my son looked at me for the very first time...
Sweetest comment ever
Gives me goosebumps everytime... I wish i could attend one of them concert once in my life.... I'm sure it would be an amazing experience...
It is an out of this world experience! Where are you at?
This song really proves how even a simple composition can make you utterly emotional.
