What sorts of paintings will be hanging in the museums of the future?
Agnieszka Pilat thinks we'll be looking at what she calls "heroic portraits of machines"-fine-art renderings of the technology that freed the modern world from the bone- and soul-crushing labor that our parents and grandparents endured.
Pilat's paintings-especially ones featuring Spot, Boston Dynamics' robot dog-are sought after by Silicon Valley collectors drawn to her valorization of technology, a welcome alternative to the traditional demonization by artists of the man-made world.
Her work is rich in callbacks to artists ranging from da Vinci to Duchamp to Warhol, and she incorporates augmented reality to further highlight how technology shapes our perceptions. A sure sign of success: One of her paintings appeared in The Matrix sequel released last year as a representation of future art.
Born in Poland in 1973, Pilat remembers life under communism as an extended period of conformity and repression that ended almost immediately after the communist regime collapsed in 1989. She talks about how her father, finally able to operate his own shop, stopped drinking and built a prosperous bakery business.
Pilat immigrated to the United States in the early 2000s. Landing in San Francisco, she encountered amazingly wealthy tech workers espousing the same collectivist ideas that had made her childhood so miserable. "I was just really shocked," she tells Reason. "I didn't realize that people still think that communism or socialism is a good idea. Moral outrage was growing within me and also a feeling that I need to protect America by telling people what it really means."
Shortly after arriving in the States, Pilat stumbled across the work of another Eastern European immigrant: Ayn Rand. Though she didn't become an Objectivist, Pilat responded viscerally to Rand's insistence that "you have a right and a moral obligation to yourself to have a purpose and work towards the purpose as hard as you can."
As her work gains stature, Pilat is moving on to a new frontier, if not quite the final one: She's an artist in residence at Elon Musk's SpaceX, where she is looking forward to possibly producing "superheroic portraits" of machines in zero gravity.
Reason talked with her in her New York studio about being upstaged by a robot dog, why she wants everyone to remember what communism was really like, and how to best appreciate-and protect-the economic and cultural freedom we too often take for granted.

It’s simultaneously depressing and inspiring to know most first generation immigrants are more patriotic than many people born on US soil. “You never realize what you had, until it’s gone”
Damn straight. First generation Americans are some of the best Americans.
I have a theory on why that is.
I think a reason why a lot of homeland Americans are more susceptible to tyranny is because they were raised comfortably with it whereas the immigrants were raised uncomfortably with it.
The immigrants left for America mainly because their country was tyrannical and they realized it. As for the homeland Americans technically they had tyranny too but they didn't question it. It was too comfortable.
The homelanders then got so comfortable with tyranny that they demanded more of it whereas the immigrants still knew better.
I think what'll help with this problem is to get people to boycott public school and choose alternative forms of education.
Many immigrants learn what we like to hear, and get benefits from saying what we want to hear. In some cases they make a career out of it. This woman is a classic example. Let’s hear what she has to say when she’s 80, retired, and needs an operation.
The vast majority of Americans are patriotic. Most are just confused when it comes to politics because of the left wing dominance in media. Hence why many will vote in candidates that will do things that oppose the voters success.

Seems this is a very common thing among people who grew up within the Eastern Block and other communist countries. Not many have a good word to say about communism or socialism.
That is why Putin is willing to kill them en masse!

No matter the brand today, true socialism / true capitalism / true nationalism have no meaning in France anymore anyway, our different political party will apply policies dictated by a corrupted european union and talk superficially about societal subjects.
Even if the far right Le Pen or the Far left Melenchon had been voted in, the other powers : judges, medias, parlement, financiary institutions would have prevented any radical policy : proof of that see Italy, see Greece, we even had a french example in 1981 with Mitterand socialist that in front of those powers (that were much less potent back then) had to go 180 degres and within 2 years went for an economy driven policy betraying his voters.
Too bad that one way those powers maintain their power is to make people dumb and unable to think, nowadays, with a major percentage of the population having lost education and somewhat of an understanding power, the majority of the votes will be swayed by marketing campains...

* 'our downfall' - meaning western, capitalist, Judeo-Christian culture. The Arab/Asian (as in middle-eastern/asian region) influences coupled with the nature of man, greed, selfishness and lack of education is undermining us. It is creating an eddy at the edge of a great pool where many stagnate and languish in their misunderstandings of who they are. Not knowing what we were or what we are becoming. Identity has always been man's greatest concern, outside of survival, and here we are again, finding ourselves wondering who we are. All across the USA, men and women are confused and lost. Longing to return to the past of our remembrance or progress into the future, depending on which perspective you hold, because of the current discomfort. It's a shame no one will read this because it's a conversation we need to have.

After those failed attempts you can either acknowledge that the idea is a failure or keep telling yourself that it wasn't done right, sound familiar?
Technology is a thrill ride but the thrill wears off almost immediately. Smart TVs and robot dogs and 5G -- do these things really impress us anymore? Do they make our lives better? What's it all for, anyway? Are we structuring our entire economy, entire lifetimes of research, of tinkering, to produce a fleeting "wow" in someone who is desensitized to it moments later?
Darius Gross, it just makes our lives easier and frees us from time-consuming labour. I mean imagine washing your dishes every day by hand, or washing your clothes by hand, or having to walk long distances instead of drive.

Some do and some don't, and most of them don't make our lives directly easier, but do by proxy. I might not get a lot of utility of an industrial mixer that can maintain a consistent churn, but I benefit from the ice cream it can produce. Or the increased production capacity allowing for more and more people to not work directly in the food industry.
The thrill of technology will fade, but the gratitude for it can linger if one lets it.
No system is perfect, but at least in capitalism there is a way out from the corruption. In socialists states all you can do is try and game the system of benefits and payments. Any attempt to rise above the status quo is met with sanctions, taxes or political punishment. To do well in socialist countries you need to be related or friends with powerful political figures, so you can enjoy the corruption.
If americans want to understand socialism they need to either go live in it or listen to those who escaped it.

@@darylSKYTZOwillis According to the tge director of the “Metalhead” episode, they had filmed a segment (but cut) of the dog being remotely managed by a man on the other side of the world. When the dog takes a break because the woman is up a tree, the man takes a timeout as well to give his children a bath. It was decided thus was “too on the nose”, and so was cut. I think it defines very clearly “man’s inhumanity to man”. This is particularly true when technology is involved. By removing the direct confrontation of one human facing another, and the anonymity of remotely inflicting pain the consequences and moral meaning is diminished. This to a lesser degree is what is wrong with social media.

I guess it's art, but not something I would put on my wall. Unfortunately themes seem to matter much more in the art market [which represents the spectrum of the art world as well as America's Got Talent represents all of music] than technical skill. What I consider art makes me think "I could NEVER make that" not "I could make a painting like that in a 3-day weekend." Also, while I agree about socialism, I'm not quite sure that Terminator-reminiscent robots will free us from menial labor. I don't think that's the sales pitch of Boston Dynamics to prospective customers, like members of Saudi royal families needing protection from their own citizens.

I don't hate capitalism, but I'm finding that living through an apocalypse really sucks; knowing that it's all, at worst, designed and at best, exploited solely for the short-term comforts of a relatively few human beings, makes it morally obscene. Oh, I hope Agnieszka Pilat puts that on her resume. "My artwork was featured in Matrix 4." What does she think of Elon Musk's transhumanist ambitions anyway? She can venerate the machines all she wants, those paintings will always evoke a sense of dread.
They only make dread in those willing to think logically about what kind of future these machines and the ruling class will create.
The fear of machines and robots is an unreasonable fear. Machines are built for the betterment of human lives. Occasionally jobs will be lost because of machines, but we shouldn't try to hold back progress from enriching everyone's lives.
My boyfriend is a chef, and at one point he felt threatened by an expensive cooking machine, you just push a button and it can cook from hundreds of recipes. But I feel that a machine like that could help people with disabilities, like my mom who has a visual impairment and can't read. I'm not sure why I should be afraid of a machine like that.

We already have autonomous killing machines. Whose benefit are those for? I am not a luddite, or anything, but machines and AI need to be handled with great care. (By "machines" in this context, I mean autonomous and semi-autonomous machines, navigating our spaces, sometimes called robots. Not a drill press machine, or a machine that cooks food, like a bread-maker.)
For me, machines as a tool will liberate humanity as a whole to do things better and go beyond as long as there no controlling party monopolizing said technology.

I normally think artists are morons full of lame cliche concepts. This chick seems very cool though. I love her ideas. They reflect so many of my own beliefs.
The problem lies within the definition of "art": while in EUC, the meaning of art is very clearly differentiated from design, "applied" arts, the crafts and trades, as well as from philosophy and engineering, the use of the word "art" in the Anglo-Saxon world encompasses a broad spectrum from noodles glued to scraps of paper, a craft executed on a high skill level to Michelangelo's sculptures. ALL the lame cliché concepts are covered by this definition. However, if you applied the more strict definition of art, you should be able to discover more interesting people with interesting ideas... And another benefit of the strict definition is that anything that contains a cliché can't be art.
Youll find many artists that actually posess talent tend to be more libertarian in nature. Actually tech ceos and innovaters tend to also be this way. Musk, Dorsey (though he caves to wokism thanks to TDS), Ramaswamy (sorry if I mispelled his name)

I don't remember the exact moment when I realized that the majority of the US wanted some kind of socialism and that the elite of that movement really wanted communism. It was quite a depressing realization.

It isn't that they want socialism or communism specifically; they want authoritarianism because of the inherent efficiency. Taking a look at West Taiwan, things they can move very quickly; the government says "Do this," and it is done.
They lean on socialism and communism as their path forward because the popular consciousness is that those things stand in opposition to capitalism (which is not totally correct), so they hype them up to align those ideologies with counterculture in order to make them cool; that being a socialist or a communist means you stand in opposition to the atrocities of imperialism and capitalism. If they actually get their way, you would see most of the aspects of the socialist or communist system they create disappear within a matter of years because those things would ultimately be just like the freedom of choice that comes from a properly liberal republic; inconvenient obstacles to their goals and designs.

I like the title. What I find funny is how many socialist functions have existed in the USA for many years. Without paying much attention do most people take such things for granted. @@Mintstar_Oceanpop Large groups of people would collapse under the weight of all the negative behaviors, if an economy did not exist. As appealing as it would be to have people do whatever they wanted, it also leads to a defacto slavery. You would not have a primary motivator to get most people to behave civil. An unbalance of labor and reward. The system fails many as it is now, but it also allows people a wide birth of freedom.
I think what you are unhappy with, is more likely the lack of representation, regarding how the money is spent. That is due to corruption in governance, not so much an inherent problem with taxation.

The problem with socialism and communism is there's no personal sacrifice or cost involved. It's essentially being generous with everyone else's money. I don't like that it operates on the premise of "well, if it fails, we all fail together" which seems like a very irresponsible thing to do, especially if the end-goal of society is to survive or continue the existence of our species. Personally, I think we are way too comfortable in modern society and thus, all the people that strongly push socialism haven't the slightest clue what that means in the longterm and how just about everything they currently love will cease to exist in that kind of economic system.

And yet, many, many European nations seem to get along quite well with blended systems with aspects of capitalism and (scary music plays) socialism. Specifically looking at Finland, while they're not a "capital S" Socialist nation, they have many public run aspects to their economy, yet they haven't crumbled as the her fearmongering would imply. Scandinavia doesn't have socialism, they have capitalism. They have a more free market (more capitalistic) than the USA does. Nations are ranked based on how free their markets are and we do indeed trail them. Some people in America call it "socialism" because they have a more generous benefit system than America but that is not what socialism is. They have as much wealth as they do in order to be so generous because they have such open capitalism. If America were to increase the benefits (free education and Healthcare, etc.) and charge poor people and middle class people far more in taxes then we would be like them but we would also have to open the economy up more (be more capitalistic) by removing regulations and lowering corporate tax rates. In America the poor don't get as much as the poor in Scandinavian nations but the poor pay $0 in taxes in America. In America you can have a family of 4 and make $80,000 a year and pay almost nothing in taxes while getting free K-12 education and subsidized college education as well as subsidized Healthcare and you decide how to spend most of your money. In Scandinavian nations at that income level you would pay about 50% of your middle class income in taxes but then college would be free and Healthcare would be free instead of subsidized and you would have far less control of your money and those not going to college would subsidize those that do, just as healthy people would subsidize those that don't take care of their health. For some this model works better and for some it doesn't work better but I'm sure most Americans would freak out about paying so much in taxes and those that love regulations would freak if our nation were to become more capitalistic.
It is funny that what we call socialism is actually more capitalism but higher taxes and benefits. BTW, Bernie Sanders bothered Scandinavians with his socialist claims and was told to stop saying that because they are lies and they don't want to lose tourists who fear being in a socialist state. Words are whatever we make them out to be and a small minority of people now call a system that combines really open and a free market economy with high taxes as being "socialist" and perhaps in the future the great majority of people will define socialism in such a way but just understand that there are also people that define socialism as socialism has been defined for 100+ years that would like us to believe they actually mean this new kind of socialism (compassionate capitalism with high taxes, more benefits, and a greater safety net) in order to gain power and then we get old school actual socialism yet again so it would be nice if people stopped using terms like capitalism and socialism and rather described what they wanted in practice.

The means of production are not owned collectively by the people nor by the government so it isn't so-called true socialism or the actual socialism that has been experienced around the world. They have a market economy. They are capitalist. Their economy is more open and more capitalist than America so you have to ask yourself; do you consider America to be capitalist? If you do then you have to come to the hard realization that Sweden and other Scandinavian nations are actually more capitalist than America is. At one point Sweden did turn towards being more socialist and taking certain industries under government control and it failed miserably (as socialism tends to do) so they changed course and privatized those industries and things got much better once again and that prosperity allows them to be generous with their benefits. Perhaps you and Bernie should study up on the history of these Scandinavian nations to learn about their actual experiences with socialism and capitalism. You should be able to just start with the 1960's and see both the worst of socialism and the best of capitalism over the last 60 years in those nations.

The bottom-up Capitalism that the artist Agnieszka romanticizes about IS a good and powerful thing, an engine of self-betterment and potential prosperity. Where it breaks down at large scale where corporations and whole industries manipulate the rules and dominate the landscape to the extent that competitive initiative or individual initiative is squashed rather than encouraged.
Pure Socialism, of course, has the same effect. The answer isn't a strict choice between either Unchecked Capitalism or Impractical Socialism, Runaway Inequality versus Absolute Equality-in-all-things. It is a society that maximizes equality of opportunity, gives voice to the most people at work and government and ensures basic dignity of life and education. It means a thriving free market where the darker impulses (and damaging effects) of corporations are held in check for the betterment of the environment and society.

She is an absolute gem. I agree with Rand that we have a moral obligation to do best with our lives. Obviously missing from Rand’s philosophy is children and God. Liberarianism is as utopian as communism. Laissez-faire capitalism in particular is about as offensive to God as communism is. We’re already seeing the effects of late stage capitalism, and what we’re seeing is essentially a budding form of neo-feudalism. I’d rather have capitalism heavily regulated because I don’t want to be a slave under corporations which are growing increasingly more powerful while disregarding worker’s rights.
It is moral to not have children you have no interest in parenting. There are also people in religious vocations who choose not to parent so as to focus on their calling.

I can see people arguing in the comments for or against socialism or capitalism.
I'm not an expert but I too lived under both systems. They both end in an equilibrium state that is similar to feudalism. You end up with a rulling class and working class. The only difference is under capitalism you also end up with a jobless poverty class. People have lived thousands of years under such conditions, so they'll manage under socialism/communism and capitalism too.
I find it really funny how people who have never lived under socialism can say and insist it doesn't work. It clearly works, it's just under authoritarian socialism there is no incentive to innovate at the workplace. This in the long run leads to less technological and market competitive society. If your country is not dependent on the foreign market, then you can go on like this forever. Whether those shortcomings can be addressed and solved is debatable.
The lady in the video is no expert either, I wonder why they even felt the need to ask her about the economic systems she's lived in. Even more she's definitely living a comfortable life. Not everyone can afford to buy $100k dog toy like that. Seems to me like she's just a play thing for the millionaires in the silicone valley. Though I have to admit her art is good. Almost all governments today (including the US) employ socialist policies to address the shortcomings of capitalism. Under capitalism you always have a certain percent of the population unemployed for example. But for me the biggest downside is capitalism if left without the state would just grind to halt. Wages will always get lower until demand evaporates. Having constant amount of currency would also mean deflationary spiral where people would be better off not investing, but just holding their money because tomorrow you can buy more stuff with the same bill. Capitalism needs socialist policies like minimum wage or central banks driving inflation in order to work. People had to try a lot in order to make capitalism work even for the few at the top. That's why people say scoialism was never given a chance.
Now let's discuss the transition and steady state of both economic systems.
*Capitalism Transition:* This is the best period of capitalism, it's easy to start a business with low upfront cost, not much in regulation and the most successful businesses compete for the limited or raw resources. Since there are a lot of new businesses and they try to attract the best workers, they pay wages as big as they can. Since the incomes for the business owner and the worker is mostly the same, they can both afford to buy a family house and raise family as neighbors.
*Capitalism steady state:* Now all the supply and demand chains have been built. All the land is already owned by someone else. All the corrupt politicians have their favorite buisness owner patrons. Now you can't get a loan from the bank to start a business, because you either have a student loan or no collateral to gamble with. Even if you manage to start a business the rest of the businesses in the economy already have lengthy contrancts with their own suppliers and buyers. You produce items but it's much harder to actually sell any of them. Your best bet is to wait for disruptions in the current supply and demand chains to enter the market. Even so if an already established business decides to compete with you they have much more options to kick you out of the market. They've spent years accumulating profits, they can invest more and sell cheaper than you can ever afford, even more they can afford to play dirty and pay people to mess up your business. On the other hand why would big businesses compete at all, they just buy they supply chain businesses down to the raw materials, land and even politicians. Those few buisness owners at the top end up with power similar to those of kings or nobility. They end up socializing with people of the same caliber, eventually it all ends up in a monopoly or oligopoly. On the other hand are the working class who get constantly gauged for money until they can no longer afford to buy a home or even food.
Socialism Transition: So far in history socialism either evolves out of the end phases of capitalism or as in the case of Russia from feudalism directly. Again the transition phase is the best period for the average people. The state takes from the rich and gives to the poor. If you had nothing beforehand, now you are given land you can work and profit from. Everybody is working. If you were rich or a noble your land is taken and given to the people who already worked that land. Someone ends up planning the economy so you don't have to wait for supply and demand chains to form. Housing shortage is solved by building large ugly buildings in bulk. Well at least it beats having homeless people duying around in the winter. Willingly giving your land or savings grants you communist party membership, this in turn makes it more likely youd be put at a governing postion somewhere. All the people have mostly the same income so crime drops at all time low. Most people don't even lock their cars or doors. Journalism is still mostly unbiased. There are multiple political parties and democracy somewhat works. There is huge GDP growth for about 10 years.
*Socialism steady state:* Here is where things turn ugly. All the people who ended up in governing positions, put their relatives or friends in other governing positions. Suddenly those people income grows even though they don't really contribute to the economy, not even as rulers. People having power, end up liking it too much and don't want to give up their positions, even when their mandate is over. Other political party leaders somehow end up dead or in jail. Any citizen unrest is put down by using the military. Journalists don't report on the unrest and in general never criticize the communist party members anymore. 40 or 50 years have passed and GDP growth is stagnating, foreign trade is in the negative and soon forbidden. Criminal activity is only done by the party members and they face no reprocusions at all. Somehow we again end up with a nobility class and a working class. Whre those at the top get most of the profits and decide how the country is run.
I'd say both systems are bad. It's just capitalism takes a bit more tome to reach steady state. It again starts not working for most people after a while and is being changed or reset by either socialism, war or hyperinflation. Where people end up starting a new. The first time capitalism reached its end state in the US was when people couldn't be payed in dollars anymore and had to use bank-notes. The second time capitalism reached it's end state was during the Great Depression. Luckily WW2 happened soon after Franklin D. Roosevelt introduced the 99% on all income over $100k. Otherwise the depression could have lasted 10 years or more.
So guys don't think you have it figured out and socialism always equals bad. Change is needed because neither system works in the long run.

Business campuses and wider culture could benefit from Renaissance-style aspirational murals of not only machines, but of all forms of commerce and invention. The amorphous sculptures and modern art that have become common in cities and offices are tacky and lack meaning.
I think that we underappreciate the value, and the rewards, of labor, of doing things, making things, in the real world, with your own hands. Grow a garden, design and build a bookcase, clear some land, or repair your own car, and you'll see what I mean. I fear that technology, while amplifying what we can accomplish, will, in the long run, rob us of most of our purpose, and satisfaction.
Most underappreciate global free market trade, too, where competitive advantage takes place, where you specialize and create that which others want so you can then trade what you create for other things others create.

I'd suspect, or at least hope, that our culture would adapt to the lack of meaningful work by embracing a more simple lifestyle in some aspects. The fear that I have is that people would embrace the madness that is social media, even more than they already have. But hopefully people would focus more on the social side of their lives. Not the stuff online. Rather their immediate relatives and possible even some further extended family that they wouldn't have time for now. Hobbies and group activities would hopefully also see a rise as well. That's just the optimist in me though, we would most likely see very little if any of that.

I don't know. Focusing on robots obviously gives her a promotional edge in the art world, but at the same time, it seems too limiting. Machines and technology have clearly helped humanity, but it was humans who created the machines and technology.

However, Polish people have choosed national-socialism during free elections in 2015 and have voted for it since. 68 percent of economy (92 in case of fuel/oil/energy) is state-owned. 18 ou of 20 biggest companies, two out of three biggest hotel owners are state-owned. Biggest real-estate owner is church. Biggest source of income for 47 percent of people is welfare in which Poland in world's champion. Local currency went from 1.9 złoty for US$ in 2009 to 4.45 złoty currently (May/2022).
