I had a laying worker hive. I remembered this old video. I tried putting a frame of brood with the queen along the wall into the laying worker hive. It worked, shes doing just fine.

I’ve referred a lot of beekeepers to this video. I posted a video Sunday and it had a laying worker colony and got a lot of comments and some about shaking out. I always say no no!That doesn’t work. There’s been studies. I usually cut my losses and newspaper combine them onto other colonies that are single deeps and make them a double. I’ve learned quite a lot from you back in 2016 when you were putting out a lot of videos. Thanks for your dedication and time.

I guess from all the info I don't have a laying worker just a broken queen that I can't find (laying very few eggs)(no brood or larva to speak of). They didn't care at all one way or the other about a new queen (just ignored her) so I guess I'm on the hunt for a crappy queen?

I was thinking. When introducing that queen with brood, on that brood put a larger screen cage with the queen in it on her brood. Boy, with double duty, = queen pheromone, plus brood smell, it would clamp down the workers even more. I think in my colonies, I would let the former queen hive requeen itself, since I don't have ready queens. It would loose a couple weeks production, but we wouldn't loose a hive that is totally useless.

The laying worker seems to be a common problem. I know how to tell the difference in the eggs. But it seems like a new queen is the only solution.

David, you add the frame with all the worker bees still on it? I took a hive out of a house and have been struggling with getting them to rear a queen from brood. Once they have a laying worker situation, will they rear a queen from brood?

He said he takes a frame of brood with the workers on the frame with that laying queen and places it in the queenless hive with the laying workers...places the queen side of the frame against the wall.

What about adding frames of queen cells to the box with laying workers... Sort of a makeshift cell builder ? 💙🐝's

Hi David, thanks for the video:) With respect to taking a frame of bees with a queen from a healthy hive and introducing it to a hive with laying workers, how do you prevent the bees from the hive with laying workers from killing the newly introduced queen if you don't have a queen cage or something comparable to it? Thanks:) - Nathaniel

+wickedbadslapshot That's tricky. Pull out a frame of eggs and larvae with the queen from the strong colony and place it against the wall on the laying worker hive, queen and bees. Pheromones will claim things down.

How about putting a QR hive on top of the laying worker hive, seprarated by a double screen board? After giving it a week or so to suppress the pheremones, you could then add a queen, make a split or combine the two.

do you have a website for products ? I see nothing in the notes about it .. yet you appear to be in a business in your videos.

+patti mincher Good point! I'll start putting that in the notes. We make our living selling equipment and bees. Without sales, I could not afford to make these videos. honeybeesonline.com
