I’ve done this recipe with brown sugar, but never white. This is so much easier than making caramel by cooking white sugar and a small amount of water then adding the butter and heavy cream (that’s the recipe where you have to be careful about mixing because the sugar will crystallize). Thanks so much!!

I cannot believe that someone would use brown suga,r unless they called it a "maple cake" that is the taste you get. My mom taught us how to make it, and that is what she said when I messed up a cake with brown sugar.

I never said I used brown sugar to make “caramel” or a caramel cake. I was just explaining that I’ve used this process with brown sugar. The brown sugar one tastes similar to toffee. I either case her recipe with white sugar is so much easier and more foolproof than the traditional recipe of cooking the white sugar directly on the heat without anything added first.
I ran across your recipe and decided to make it for my chocolate cake. Everything was going fine wasn’t sure how long to eyeball the browning caramel effect and just when I thought it was enough it burned while I was stirring, so there’s a very fine line on when it’s time to stop the browning process and add the heavy cream. 😢 so I had to toss it. But I will try again.. 😊
There are very many ways to end up with caramel aka carmel frodting using canned milk, honey, syrup 12:49 , white and or brown sugar molasses condensed milk, whipping cream butter, melted carmels, margarine ,milk all in one combination or another wind up with caramel. One of my two favorite cakes growing up was a chocolate layer cake with caramel using. My grandmother used to make it lot because it was my dad’s favorite. I probably haven’t had it for 40-45 years. Sometimes when I am impatient, I make salted caramel using the microwave. It’s so easy. Just condensed milk, white and brown sugar, butter and a tiny bit of Karo syrup. One time I over cooked it and ended up with one huge Sugar Daddy. Can anyone say sugar rush?
If you prefer box cake over scratch cake, use butter cake mix with a pack of vanilla pudding mix per box you use. Example: I box cake mix and one box pudding mix, 4 eggs, 1/2 cup oil and 1 1/4 cup milk. Good luck🥰
@shakaylagolden5334 it depends on how dark you caramelized the sugar in the first step. You can make it as dark or as light at you want. As long as you don’t burn it.

I really like your video best out of the three I’ve watched. The other two were both Old Fashioned or Classic Recipes with Pet or Carnations can evaporated milk. Yours turned out a bit thicker. More like a frosting. I just like your texture better. I don’t usually do this kind of thing. But the first time I saw your’s I passed it up yesterday. Not being mean & Im about to tell you out of being an old granny; I love on all God’s Children. Something I believe that will help your videos even more. Even though you looked pretty blessed already with your viewers. I don’t care what kind of pot you use. Even if it says don’t use comet or Ajax or Brillo pads. But I use it anyways. Take a Brillo pad & slightly scour the outside of your pot & just make it look a bit cleaner. Not saying you’re not clean enough. Just saying for looks purposes of your viewers. God Go With You & May He Bless The Work Of Your Sweet Hands. I appreciate your recipe so very much. (Exodus 33:14-17). Another lady said just pour your frosting up into a couple of jars if you’re not ready to ice a cake with it right away. Store in the refrigerator. Love & Blessings Always!

Almond is one of my favored flavors but I’ve never tried it in caramel. Now I am intrigued.

Brown sugar turns into a maple flavor. That sounds gross . Caramel is not made from maple.

Well it sets but not hard. It’s very smooth. If you refrigerate, you will have to warm in the microwave for a few seconds.
