I was a class topper all throughout my school till 12th. The amount of bullying and social exclusion I faced as a teenager was enough to break me down. At one point, I would do anything to get accepted in the popular girls' group, or have any real friends. I started to think of my nerd identity as uncool and went extra miles to disprove it. I did things that I normally wouldn't do, like passing answers in class tests, not studying and appearing for exams (because in films the lead character doesn't study but enjoys with friends and scores high, which was apparently cool), I threw tantrums at my home requesting for expensive dresses, shoes and all that stuff so that I'll be one in the cool gang. I even remember gossipping about someone who personally did nothing to me, just because other girls and guys had a problem with her. Later when I thought about it, it crushed me as it was something so out of character for me. At one point, I was a recipient of bullying and here I was, contributing to something similar. It was a mini 'Mean Girls' movie scenario. Deep down, I felt empty and sad. I neither felt friended by anyone nor felt respected by myself. But I was a dumb teen. I carried on with the flow. This continued act made me lose a sense of my boundaries and I turned into a desperate people pleaser. Everything proved counterproductive because instead of my expected results of making new friends, they treated me like a doormat, took me for granted and used me for my time and resources which I was desperately giving away. I even got into a relationship with one of my classmate which was toxic but I stayed because there was this culture of slutshaming those who broke up with guys in my school. I was afraid with my nerd identity, this fall would be extra hard. In a nutshell, my academics took a steep fall and I scored low on my 12th boards.
That was when I saw the true faces of my classmates. Most of them boasted about how they scored higher than me and the running joke was on how I was a pottakinattile thavala who couldn't fare well on boards or with the other kids in entrance. Those days were dark, I am not from a very affluent family but my family had always tried to give me the best of education. But for the most crucial moment, I failed them. I was in a position I never imagined myself. With application to private colleges and fathoming whether to repeat or not. I understood that not a single person who I wanted as friends genuinely cared about me and with that came the knowledge that I was being used all along.
I had attachment trauma from them as I don't know who to trust anymore and I'm still healing. But one good that happened is for the first time in my life, I had a self realisation that nothing should be taken for granted. That my nerd identity that I tried desperately to shed was something that I had put a lot of hardwork and I should've been proud of that, because I knew by then that all of them were bitter to me for the same reason. From then on, I tried to study with full effort and respect because I understood it was the only solid saving grace I had in my life. I made it a point not to force friendships and definitely never gossip about anyone or overextend myself so that someone will accept me.
Trust me when I say this. The people who you would want to keep in your life would love, respect and cherish you for what you are. They'd give constructive criticisms and would be genuine. You'd want such genuine people in your life, not someone who can plot ways to drag you down.
Stay proud of all your hardwork and achievements. The right people will stay in your life.

I can so totally relate...even though I have broken down because of this feeling that you never belong no matter what you do , I've always known that it was this enviness that made people bully me..... congratulations on getting through the time where u couldn't do the one thing u did right , during your 12th boards (scoring high I mean ).....I know it took a lot of energy to do that...and thank u for reminding me that being a nerd is never bad...lots of 💕

I was an average student till my +2 because I can't finish the full syllabus to a satisfactory level and this hounded me when I got my question paper. this is very bad because every day I woke up by 4am in the morning and studied, then go to tuition class before school, and determination, were all the important things which I followed during this time. Everything I learned was real and it still persists in my mind, and I know what all are my weak points. Also, there are several subjects which I really don't like. But I was able to find my passion and skills during this time and invested time into it parallel, even during exam days. After I joined my engineering, my trajectory climbed uphills, exponentially. people who cheated in the exam are still struggling later in their life, I know living examples.
I studied in an ICSE school and was consistently above average student . Would score around distinction but I had no aim till high school . I didn’t know what career to choose and what to do after high school . I ended up in a degree professional course and after studies got a job too . When I was around 24 years old , I started to realize the mistake I made . I had no aim and was defiantly unhappy in my current career too. When I saw my classmates doing much much better , that is when I realized I should have had an aim .
Age 27 , I started to study again . But that time I had an aim and was so focused . I did my best and beyond . After studies , i got a job too and much happier in what I do now .
Age is no barrier and when u can , u should !
I am not gonna stop here , but I want to study more in future bcoz now I know that time is precious and should make use of every opportunity we get .

ഞാൻ ഒരു govt engg clgil ആണ് പഠിച്ചത്. എൻട്രൻസിൽ എല്ലാം അത്യാവശ്യം നല്ല മാർക്ക്‌ വാങ്ങി വന്നവർ ആയിരുന്നു ക്ലാസ്സിൽ മിക്കവാറും. അതിൽ കുറേ പേര് so called ഉഴപ്പൻ ആയി കളിച്ചു നടന്നു.4yrs കഴിഞ്ഞു, ഈ ഉഴപ്പി നടന്ന ടീമ്സിലെ financially, influence ഒക്കെ ഉള്ളവർ രക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. Am a dentist basically, but after working for 2.5 yrs ..i understood that it's not my ultimate goal, so i took a decision to shift to Clinical research, 28 yr old student in the course. I have always been a good student, in terms of sincerity, good marks etc. But sometimes I feel why did I work so hard to get Dr. Title for 5 yrs and then practice it for 2.5yrs and now shift to something different entirely. But the fact i realised is that all the studies i did gave me some skills which is helping me now. For eg. As jaiby rightly said, memory skills, putting accurate content on paper, command on language, critically appraise a topic etc..i think everything u study will serve a purpose even if it hasn't given u a title or position, u will certainly gain some skills. I wouldn't say being ozhappan or padippi is the thing, when u r into something try to understand what it is instead of just wasting time, though u copy and got pass marks but if u know the topic, u will certainly do good in future. I think employers look for skills and not numbers. But if u got good marks it would certainly give a good 1st impression. Its just my perspective😅

I m a very average student, I m lazy at times... Will study at times...
At times I feel off, can't study, at times I willl think that i don't wanna study more. All ups nd downs.. But still I survive, coz I wanna do something in life... At times I think I am an uzhapan... But after watching this video, I came to conclusion that, i m not an uzhapan... After 7 years of MBBS life, wanna develop other skills outside MBBS curriculum, I m learning few things like that which may or may not be useful in long future, but i wanna upgrade myself.

Its just that padippists reach their goal a bit faster. Throughout this video, U were stating facts which we never notice in life. In my life, I hav been a Padippi & ozhapi at diff phases of my life. But I noticed, wenever i go bk in studies it was never by choice, it was always situational. Like choosing the right friends, having good teachers who encourage u & maintaining a good mental health r some of the imp factors i felt for being a topper besides having determination & consistency.

The difference between a good student and 😮a bad student ( sorry for using this word) is that the first one know how to learn and process information.and they have practiced it from childhood . Here grades are given as a sign of punishment and their errors are not rectified. We all have strengths and weaknesses. Grades actually play a good role in building a child's mindset. I did associate degree in science in US and I had to study American history , American government , Arts , Texas history , Texas government ( since I studied in Texas ) - I had to study all these , else I won’t complete my associates ! It's been 15 yrs and average students who studied as well as enjoyed college life are doing much better in life and career than the toppers who used to sit with books 24*7. There are a couple of reasons i agree and disagree with this video :
1. Why are 'Ozhappan' videos having huge following : i don't think it is as Black and white as portrayed in this video. Youngsters who study are often seen as doing something of value and others who are not able to are seen as incapable and useless. These videos are often the only few places where they are praised ( the reasons that they say are ridiculous). To summarise we as a society haven't been able to understand that not everybody can study and non-scholastic talents are valuable assets too. What we don't want is people who are able to study , not studying cause they are made to feel silly by these videos.
2. There is some truth to the fact that some highly academic people are not always well rounded. As a society the only expectation from kids is to score marks (not a metric to evaluate intelligence). Often a set back or failure is too hard for them to deal with or their knowledge may be much limited to matters of subjects which are not healthy either. I have seen mechanical engineers not sure of how to use a hammer and screwdriver. Not that they should know but where is the appreciation for somebody who is handy with tools when there is an issue. Some of the highly academic people also lack the soft skill which handicaps their effectiveness. We have all had teachers who are PHDs with no clue how to teach. And lower qualified people teach absolutely brilliantly.
3. Surely there is respect for people who are academically strong but what about the others. Just because our society at this time respects and prioritizes with degrees , so what? What about the intellectuals outside teaching , politicians , social workers, artists, manual-job workers and so on. If you think academia is a substitute for intelligence and scientific thinking , that is not true.. we have seen Harvard professors supporting theory of 6000 years old earth.
4. Regarding Concentrating on something for long hours. It is a state called the flow. It's a state when we as a person are involved in something that is of interest and challenges our skill. Just because our education in the current case supports this state of flow for chemistry, physics or so on please don't expect those people to be able to do it for all . I dare a person with so called good academics to put in hours to study moral philosophy, or fashion technology , or wood work. The fact that we cannot find things for each and every student's flow is a failure of the education system as a whole.
5. In developed nations we can see that there is a significantly lower percentage of men in higher academia in recent years and psychologist believe there may be a growth factor related to puberty that may be an issue. So psychologists need to be more cognizant of these factors to change syllabus and teaching styles to help adapt or bridge these gaps.
6. Lastly, special consideration for teachers and corporates is not because these people are respected but they have some salary security. If you think they are going to give you the only chair available to sit in when a millionaire walks in, you are kidding yourselves because capitalism respects the ability to spend, not your "Value".
To summarise maybe we should be in a society where people can be respected for any skill of importance.
