I was fortunate enough to visit Persepolis about 15 years ago, and as both a Persian and a lifelong history nerd (Classics major), it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I am grateful for my heritage and the history of my people. We’ve been truly blessed.
Persepolis is a Greek name just like all Greek cities using the suffix polis like alexantroupolis, konstantinoupolis.. .etc Names are given with a purpose not by chance.
I saw Persepolis in 1970-71. It was amazing. At the time, very lonely and great. It seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. I lived in Iran then and saw many magnificent things and places. The details used in the many ways of decorating buildings. The arts they were masters of. After you get used to the aesthetic, it was all so beautiful. I feel honored to have been able to live there, I will never forget it,

I've always admired my civilized Persian ancestors. Cyrus, the Great, always have been loved & never forgotten by Iranians. He issued the first charter of human rights. He freed the slaves, established racial equality and declared that all people had the right to choose their own religion.

I had an old friend from Iran back in the '80s. He taught me so much about Persian history and culture. I also learned a bit of Farsi. What a beautiful culture, then and now--I wish more people could understand and appreciate it.

I am an Iranian (Persian) and I believe every old country has some good & bad things in its past. One of the major things that makes me to be proud of Persia is the great Cyrus. After capturing Babylon and entering the city he ordered something to be written on a cylinder about his rules regarding the citizens of his empire. His order and his mentality was a kind of masterpiece in human wrights. This Cylinder is kept in the British Museum and the translation of his writings is in the United Nations as the First Charter of the Human Rights.
Babylon was full of sin. Prophet Isaiah for told what would happen to Babylon 200 years prior. Cyrus dried up the river that surrounded Babylon and his armed walked right through the gate that was lifted open.
If its the same Persian I am thinking of, he did something quite amazing and nearly unheard of. He would often allow the areas he took over under their own cultural and religious norms, only demanding the taxes and possible soldiers for duty in return for protection.

I wish you had mentioned that the ancient Persians had constructed an earlier version of the Suez Canal. It was started by the Pharaoh Necho, but finished by the Persians 100 years later and was in use for 500 years. Quite an achievment.

I had the chance to visit Persepolis in 2005. Very impressive! Especially the view over the city from the hill where Artaxerxes III was buried. Also the museum is worth to be visited. In the western world everybody talks about the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans but if ever you have a chance to visit Iran don't miss the opportunity to go and see this great legacy of the Persian empire! As a Persian, I love talking mess with my Greek friends about our ancient rivalry 😋 With that being said, I’ve been a nerd for antiquity since I was a kid, so much so that I was reading Greek mythology when most kids my age were playing in the sandbox or the jungle gym. My book collection contains nearly all of the great Greek comedies, tragedies, and Homeric epics. And I do love Greek food ☺️

I have a longing to visit here, I am half Iranian by birth, born and live in Britain. I was fostered then adopted by white British parents and never met my birth parents, all I know is my father was an Iranian studying at University in the 1970's at Durham. Since I found out about my heritage when I was a young teenager I have held it in my heart and often day dreamed about what my father's land must look like, how the wind and sun feels there. All of the Iranian people I have met have had something very special about them, dignified and generous.

The Persians have only been forgotten because too few of us today have any knowledge of History at all. Schools in particular have an appalling record of failure with teaching History (as well as the 3Rs) and when they do it is 'Cherry Picked' for political reasons. I am an amateur historian I learned SOME history as an elective in High School but most of my knowledge was gained in my own time outside the so-called 'education' system.

I'm a Christian and recently found part Jewish. I love the Persian esthetic so beautiful the hand made rugs a work of art. I wish I could visit the markets like shown. If only we could have love and peace and share admire each uniqueness.

The Persian empire was truly impressive in just about every aspect of life. Whether royal life or the life of it's citizens. And their moral concepts were absolutely exemplary, giving all sorts of freedom to it's conquered peoples. An empire Envious to no other. Remarkable.

May fall, more will possibly, but I believe we are evolving to a point where only natural worldwide cataclysm is going to do so. The next step will be, in my opinion there will be about 3 steps, concentration into super-countries. An example would be the hypothetical joinging of North and South America into one country, Africa and Western Europe, The middle east and Russia, The orient joining together, as well as Australia and India (the combos could be different). The second step being futher concentration into two or three super-countries, and the third being a One-World Government. Just a theory.

I’m so grateful to have visited Persepolis last year. I’d recommend that all of you put Iran on your list of places to visit. I’m American. I can tell you, I’ve never felt more loved than when I went on a 4,000 mile road trip through Iran for a month. I miss the people of Iran. Someday, I’ll return to Iran and continue exploring.

I am tajik, which is another name for persians. It is interesting how we still have so many things remained from that age. People in villages or city will go to mountains for the summer to escape the heat. And how women still wearing all those colorful shiny clothes. And so many more things...💓😃
@@SS31300 Tajik language, like Dari spoken in parts of Afghanistan, is a variation of the Persian language, a member of the Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family and is mutually intelligible with the Persian spoken in Iran. Tajiks are ethnically Persian. The various Persian Empires were larger than the current territorial extent of Iran. So Tajiks have every right to make a connection with their Iranian brothers.

I was there in 1990 and it is simply an amazing place an awesome experience walking among the massive stone architecture , even as a ruin of its former glory the way it is now , no way would call Persepolis a ruin. One has to go and see for themselves how magnificent it is and to see it at the height of its glory would be on another level I’d love to go back there again 👍👍👍👍

I didn’t know Persepolis was a lost city. Every time I visited this palace, I wondered what it would have looked like if Alexander had not destroyed it. How it would have looked as a great museum, how people dressed then, the decorations. Recently I saw a video of making of Persepolis which showed all that. It was beautiful. For the rest of world, Alexander may be the “Great”, for us Persian he was a destroyer, wild thug who destroyed this beautiful city.
No one in modern history can come close to religious fanatics out of the wonderful world of Islam for desecration of ancient artifacts they deem pagan.
But the Persians always invaded Greece, so Alexander just had to invade Persia as well, though, If I'm not mistaking Thais Athens burned the city herself
@@pfranks75 The Persians weren't Muslims you rude flatulent person, they speak Farsi or Urdu today. They are the original Aryans - never mind 'Caucasians'. They are not Arabs nor speak Arabic as their native language - they were conquered by the 'Arabs' or Muslims you are thoughtlessly throwing at Amirah - for no comprehensible reason. What other languages do you speak? One, correct? Persians you meet often will speak 3-4. Arabic, Farsi or Urdu, French, and English. You do have the market cornered on y'all, though.
On a personal level I have met and worked with quite a few Iranian in New York, they are some of the most polite and humble people I ever came across. Then again that's just my personal experience.
As an Academic Dean for many years at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst, I dealt with students from all over the world, from all over Asia, Africa. the Middle East, from most countries in Europe (Eastern, Central, and Western). The Iranian students were among the most open, friendly, polite, and smartest. They were a delight to work with, and to know.

Wow. This documentary was very well put together. So beautiful. But now I’m left SO UPSET! I’m upset that I’m only REALLY learning about Persia at the age of 38, and I’m even more MAD that Alexander (the Great Evil) selfishly took out such a beautiful and peaceful land of people!
Do more research. That’s a very interesting time in history. But this documentary is very one-sided and paint the Persians to be perfect. They are far from innocent.
The Greek called anyone who didn't speak Greek a Barbarian. The very term meant just that, "someone who doesn't know Greek". These people were considered culturally less sophisticated because of course (and every culture in the world does this) they considered their own culture superior to others. No doubt the Persians thought the same of the Greeks, and the Egyptians of the Romans, the Romans of the Egyptians, etc. etc.
Duckthing you are so far out I can only assume you are trolling. 'Barbarian' meant pretty much what it does today, not "someone who doesn't know Greek". It was a Greek word but they got it from the Arabs. The Barbary Coast meant something like 'The Coastal Lands of the Barbarians'. The Greeks were in absolutely constant contact with 'that part of Africa'. All this stuff is so easy to find out, from regular, reliable, history sites.

Eli za The Shah gave women the right to vote before they even asked for it in 1963. American women have only had the right to vote for 100 years since August 26, 2020. Alice Paul and other suffragettes went to jail and were force fed when they rejected food. They only got the right to vote after Tennessee became the 26 state to pass the law to give women the right to vote and congress then enacted it. Imagine the Shah, who many call a dictator, giving women the right to vote without all that fighting and campaigning that Alice Paul did. Additionally he made it illegal for a man to have more than one wife. This was so that women from religious families wouldn’t be forced into it against their will. We can’t just give them the choice to be a second wife since some women might not have the choice. Finally, he made the hijab illegal. He gave women the chance to have freedom without pressure form their families. To me he was a feminist before the word feminist even existed. His wife built a colony for those suffering from leprosy to give them the chance to live good lives without infecting others. These are things many people don’t know about the Shah and people just criticize him because it’s the easy thing to do.

Right back at the start when we were viewing the ruins for the first time I was strongly reminded of Karnak (until we got to the winged beasts). But that trip to the middle east didn't include Iran - and oh how I wished it had (still do but at that time borders were closed - hopefully some day)

I remember distinctly, in school when we learned about how Alexander the Great defeated Persia and the whole empire vanished, I felt so devastated, and thought that if things went the other way our world today might had been so much better. I am not educated enough to draw these conclusions confidently, so please don't be too harsh on me. It was a feeling I had, and still have, I felt it after watching this video as well. Ancient East to me always seemed closer to the wisdom of the Earth, the better side of human nature, it understood that we came from the earth and respected it more than the West. I see much more wisdom and truth in their philosophy. Anyways, thank you so much for these documentaries and your efforts to educate people. Much respect.
Thank you for this...the Persian Empire was remarkable and sadly undervalued in Western historical study....they were imperialists yet tolerant of others and it is surprising that the great historical text of the Jewish Old Testament was not mentioned in its records of the relationship of ancient Israel and the Persians...maybe another documentary could examine it? As a Greek I truly admire these times and civilizations when human society as we know it, begun. I have never seen history with national criteria and this helped me see the beauty of ancient times. For whatever reason, in human history one empire succeeded the other, but it is important to remember, regardless who prevailed, all these elements that contributed to human society and its development. For they are the identity of human kind.

For example, the Greeks didn’t conquer the Persian Empire: Alexander the Great, a Macedonian, did. Moreover, Persian emperor Cyrus the Great freed the Jews from Babylon, promoted religious tolerance throughout his empire, paid workers rather than enslave them, and created a charter for human rights that lies to this day at the United Nations HQ. Moreover: Alexander was a terrible ruler, so he was unable to hold onto the empire he took from the Persians. Don’t whitewash history. Otherwise, very entertaining special. I visited Persepolis about 15 years ago, and it was breathtaking.
Alexander died at what 32 or 33? He spent most of his ruling life at war. Hardly enough time to see if he would have been a good ruler in peace. They probably should have said Macedonian but if I was talking about the Spartans it is ok to say "The Spartans did this" along with "The Greeks then marched..." as the Spartans were Greek - same with Macedonia.

Regarding Rome, you have allot in common with the Romans and I’ve seen many Greeks show this admiration, but Romans’ also had a great respect and admiration for the Greeks. I am an Iranian (Persian) and I believe every old country has some good & bad things in its past. One of the major things that makes me to be proud of Persia is the great Cyrus. After capturing Babylon and entering the city he ordered something to be written on a cylinder about his rules regarding the citizens of his empire. His order and his mentality was a kind of masterpiece in human wrights. This Cylinder is kept in the British Museum and the translation of his writings is in the United Nations as the First Charter of the Human Rights.

I wish you had mentioned that the ancient Persians had constructed an earlier version of the Suez Canal. It was started by the Pharaoh Necho, but finished by the Persians 100 years later and was in use for 500 years. Quite an achievment.

I had the chance to visit Persepolis in 2005. Very impressive! Especially the view over the city from the hill where Artaxerxes III was buried. Also the museum is worth to be visited. In the western world everybody talks about the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans but if ever you have a chance to visit Iran don't miss the opportunity to go and see this great legacy of the Persian empire! I have a longing to visit here, I am half Iranian by birth, born and live in Britain. I was fostered then adopted by white British parents and never met my birth parents, all I know is my father was an Iranian studying at University in the 1970's at Durham. Since I found out about my heritage when I was a young teenager I have held it in my heart and often day dreamed about what my father's land must look like, how the wind and sun feels there. All of the Iranian people I have met have had something very special about them, dignified and generous.

The Persians have only been forgotten because too few of us today have any knowledge of History at all. Schools in particular have an appalling record of failure with teaching History (as well as the 3Rs) and when they do it is 'Cherry Picked' for political reasons. The Persian empire was truly impressive in just about every aspect of life. Whether royal life or the life of it's citizens. And their moral concepts were absolutely exemplary, giving all sorts of freedom to it's conquered peoples. An empire Envious to no other. Remarkable.

The next step will be, in my opinion there will be about 3 steps, concentration into super-countries. An example would be the hypothetical joinging of North and South America into one country, Africa and Western Europe, The middle east and Russia, The orient joining together, as well as Australia and India (the combos could be different). The second step being futher concentration into two or three super-countries, and the third being a One-World Government. Just a theory.

I’d recommend that all of you put Iran on your list of places to visit. I’m American. I can tell you, I’ve never felt more loved than when I went on a 4,000 mile road trip through Iran for a month.

I was there in 1990 and it is simply an amazing place an awesome experience walking among the massive stone architecture , even as a ruin of its former glory the way it is now , no way would call Persepolis a ruin.
One has to go and see for themselves how magnificent it is and to see it at the height of its glory would be on another level I’d love to go back there again 👍👍👍👍

I didn’t know Persepolis was a lost city. Every time I visited this palace, I wondered what it would have looked like if Alexander had not destroyed it. How it would have looked as a great museum, how people dressed then, the decorations. Recently I saw a video of making of Persepolis which showed all that. It was beautiful. For the rest of world, Alexander may be the “Great”, for us Persian he was a destroyer, wild thug who destroyed this beautiful city.
No one in modern history can come close to religious fanatics out of the wonderful world of Islam for desecration of ancient artifacts they deem pagan.
But the Persians always invaded Greece, so Alexander just had to invade Persia as well, though, If I'm not mistaking Thais Athens burned the city herself

As an Academic Dean for many years at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst, I dealt with students from all over the world, from all over Asia, Africa. the Middle East, from most countries in Europe (Eastern, Central, and Western). The Iranian students were among the most open, friendly, polite, and smartest.
They were a delight to work with, and to know.

Wow. This documentary was very well put together. So beautiful. But now I’m left SO UPSET! I’m upset that I’m only REALLY learning about Persia at the age of 38, and I’m even more MAD that Alexander (the Great Evil) selfishly took out such a beautiful and peaceful land of people!
Do more research. That’s a very interesting time in history. But this documentary is very one-sided and paint the Persians to be perfect. They are far from innocent.
The Greek called anyone who didn't speak Greek a Barbarian. The very term meant just that, "someone who doesn't know Greek".
These people were considered culturally less sophisticated because of course (and every culture in the world does this) they considered their own culture superior to others.
No doubt the Persians thought the same of the Greeks, and the Egyptians of the Romans, the Romans of the Egyptians, etc. etc.

Alice Paul and other suffragettes went to jail and were force fed when they rejected food. They only got the right to vote after Tennessee became the 26 state to pass the law to give women the right to vote and congress then enacted it. Imagine the Shah, who many call a dictator, giving women the right to vote without all that fighting and campaigning that Alice Paul did. Additionally he made it illegal for a man to have more than one wife. This was so that women from religious families wouldn’t be forced into it against their will. We can’t just give them the choice to be a second wife since some women might not have the choice. Finally, he made the hijab illegal. He gave women the chance to have freedom without pressure form their families. To me he was a feminist before the word feminist even existed. His wife built a colony for those suffering from leprosy to give them the chance to live good lives without infecting others. These are things many people don’t know about the Shah and people just criticize him because it’s the easy thing to do.

I remember distinctly, in school when we learned about how Alexander the Great defeated Persia and the whole empire vanished, I felt so devastated, and thought that if things went the other way our world today might had been so much better. I am not educated enough to draw these conclusions confidently, so please don't be too harsh on me. It was a feeling I had, and still have, I felt it after watching this video as well.
Ancient East to me always seemed closer to the wisdom of the Earth, the better side of human nature, it understood that we came from the earth and respected it more than the West. I see much more wisdom and truth in their philosophy.

Thank you for this...the Persian Empire was remarkable and sadly undervalued in Western historical study....they were imperialists yet tolerant of others and it is surprising that the great historical text of the Jewish Old Testament was not mentioned in its records of the relationship of ancient Israel and the Persians...maybe another documentary could examine it? The great Cyrus allowed exiled Jews to return to their native Israel....etc

As a Greek I truly admire these times and civilizations when human society as we know it, begun. I have never seen history with national criteria and this helped me see the beauty of ancient times. For whatever reason, in human history one empire succeeded the other, but it is important to remember, regardless who prevailed, all these elements that contributed to human society and its development. For they are the identity of human kind.

As a Persian-American who’s studied the classics/antiquity my entire life (with an emphasis on Ancient Greece & Rome), and majored in it at university: this video is rather light on historical accuracy. For example, the Greeks didn’t conquer the Persian Empire: Alexander the Great, a Macedonian, did. Moreover, Persian emperor Cyrus the Great freed the Jews from Babylon, promoted religious tolerance throughout his empire, paid workers rather than enslave them, and created a charter for human rights that lies to this day at the United Nations HQ. Moreover: Alexander was a terrible ruler, so he was unable to hold onto the empire he took from the Persians. Don’t whitewash history.
Otherwise, very entertaining special. I visited Persepolis about 15 years ago, and it was breathtaking.
Alexander died at what 32 or 33? He spent most of his ruling life at war. Hardly enough time to see if he would have been a good ruler in peace.
They probably should have said Macedonian but if I was talking about the Spartans it is ok to say "The Spartans did this" along with "The Greeks then marched..." as the Spartans were Greek - same with Macedonia.

Fun fact: Alexander the Great is portrayed as a hero and survivor in almost all Medieval Persian poems! But in Zoroastrian texts, he is often referred to as the "Gujastak" which means Accursed!

This is not true. alexander is not portrayed as a hero nor a survivor, rather a failure and a blind man. This can be seen in Shahnameh. Iran won.
We call Classical Greece the Golden Age, but the Persian Empire was a Global Golden Age that influenced every empire after it.

PERSIA is the history of humanity.
Their civilization certainly ranks with Egypt's but the name 'Persian' is an insult assigned them by their Greek enemies. 'Iranian' was assigned them by Winston Churchill during WWII. They do and always have called themselves 'Aryan'. The only thing Germans have in common with the Aryans is the universe word 'Mama' that has come down to us all.
Persia is part of the history of humanity. It's good to be proud of where you came from but don't get carried away : )

Parsis were the tribe Cyrus and the Achamenedes rised from, hence the Persians/Parsis.. under Achamenedes, Parsis, Medes, Parths unified .. all three tribes were Aryan tribes who called their land "Iran Zamin", which means the land of Aryans..

Persia is very important as source of cultural heritage in india and northen Europe plase where India meets Finland/russia, wonder thing. it is echoing, cant say is it from Ural from north to arabia or from arabia to north, those are things what you cant say certain, Altai in russia is just found, such things. I would like these documents bee more profound, these are full of greeks and war and architecture. Also would bee good made by local universities, found them not europeans invading again and again, something what is possible out of their understanding, what is important to persians. but if there is no knowledge so these remain superficial ..

in france and other european countries ,all you learned is about what is good to your ears. The historical truth for some reason teached only half the last 30-40 years. For example ,you know about celtic invade in greece 278 bc? if no i suggest you to search for it. Your ancestors was the really bad guys as they were also again in 4th crusade 1204.Not people from east. Middle east people had civilization long before you.

Well pay attention to that little blurb at around 48:18. We did not even know about most of it until the 30s. Not even 100 years ago. I mean that is when scholars just started digging this stuff up let alone verifying ,debating and then put it to the public .It was to us like the beginnings of Egypt and further back still are, time almost out of mind as far as more solid facts.
Probably like the documentary says, not much is actually known about Persia.

Regarding Rome, you have allot in common with the Romans and I’ve seen many Greeks show this admiration, but Romans’ also had a great respect and admiration for the Greeks. So much that they adopted allot of their culture. This was not so with the Persians, they had a grudge against the Greeks and wanted to subdue them at any cost. The Turks are another story.

There are also different accounts of where he was from some say he was kind of media others say he conquered media. There's alot of inaccuracies in this video. They just pick a narrative and run with it.

Don't forget who started it. Persians attacked Greece too many times. only Persepolis was burnt down avenging the destruction of Athens by them. Philip gave his promise at the Delian league when he united all Greeks under the first Nation ever. Greeks wanted security and only way was eventually Alexander the Great getting rid of them.
