"it is what it is my friend".... WHAT A THING OF BEAUTY!....nice one Glen! your best is always good enough for me. what a way to start my sunday..... and you are right, i hated doing mine, was really happy with the result, but never want to do another one. greetz from Bavaria Germany.
Yah there's a lot of masking but when finished just lean back and enjoy the beautiful work you've done and then you realize it wasn't so bad I think you'll find it was fun!!!
yes Glenn mate I've just ordered mine looking forward to getting it been wanting one since I was 7 It does look good mate I know they're tricky but you've done a great job😊😎👍👊🇬🇧
i went with racing white on my, Lancia, wet sanded, between several coats, looks great, but not a blingy color, but somehow prefer, looks more retro overall, nice job, got to do the s scorcher
Hi! It turned out really nice, well done! I finally ordered a Sand Scorcher after wanting one since… forever. It will only be my second Tamiya car and I know I’ll savor the build process and let it take all the time needed. Big thanks for all the great content you have produced over the years, it has become quite a treasure trove for us RC fans!
It looks great, it comes together with practice. As a 1/24th model builder thru the 70's, painting a 1/10th scale was a treat. I have painted or re-painted well over 50 of the VW's and there wasn't one where I didn't find a paint issue that I had to go back a do-over because of all the seams in the body. It doesn't matter how well you think the tape went into the crease, or over a protrusion, it's going to leak a little bit. Not sure I am a fan of the racing white, the pure white leaves a better contrast between the blue, especially if it's a metallic. Some of my favourites are the Ford Grabber colours or the Mopar High Impact Paints, they always look great. Grabber Green or Sassy Grass, Sublime look amazing on the VW bug. I did my share of painting poly bodies, and I am not a fan of painting them, or the looks of them. Seems more like a half measure when compared to the hard bodies, but to each their own. Cool stuff! 😎
Awesome jobs sir. I'm a 35+ year automotive painter. I want this kit for the painting challenge. I didn't know it was at that level so thank you. One thing I want to mention for future projects. Get yourself a set of Molotow Liquid Chrome Markers. You won't be disappointed.
The white paint gives it a classic look, I do like it a lot. Masking the blue below the door handles is a great idea, that is how i will mask mine too. Another Tamiya kit that takes a lot of time is the Buggyra Fat Fox. It is now a shelf queen because I dont want to build another one. Excellent video bud!
Your paint work and patience are outstanding. You sound so hard on yourself. Think about us novices that wish we had your skill set. I will live vicariously through your videos as a talented painter.
Glen.. ha ha, you make me laugh. It looks amazing. Again, back in the day, we painted our cars, as kids really poorly, but thought they looked great..But it didnt matter. We were out in quarries and waste ground, the school play ground thrashing them to death, having fun with several mates........we aspired too and drooled over the tamiya catalogues..Then there was no such thing as a shelf queen...Now I as you as adults, we look for tamiya box art shelf queen perfection..You have achieved it, and off white looks better than pure white on these..Great Job
As always great build you did a good job. I wish I had half the skill to paint a hard body that you do. Can't wait to see it with all the alloys on it.
Racing white looks great. It is certainly a challenge I'd like to accomplish one day, I'd prefer to paint black on the inside to add even more realism.
Wow! What an iconic vehicle. This.was always out of my price range when i was a kid. This and the ford ranger!!! Anyhoo, you pulled it out of the bag and it looks fantastic. The soumd of dread in your voice was quite funny though 😄. Another brilliant video!😄👍
Funny you say rite of passage. I was feeling the same way about a wild willy I just ordered. But I figured a car like that is great for a small lawn anyway. The sandscorcher is sooo retro. The off white and blue stepper and guards (that you refer to as wings lol) are brilliant.
No easy feat pulling that vid off Glenn! You definitely put the work in mate! Good result on the Scorcher....good on you...now I wanna make amends & build one as well. 2 channels, tonne of content, & good rc. Thanks again.
Nice build mate! The Racing White actually looks great once it's finished. BTW I appreciate your honesty in pointing out your mistakes and where you ran into problems.
Great job. My SS bodyshell has spent a year sitting on my bench awaiting a re-mask & respray to fix a mistake on the roof. This video has made me want to get it finished. PS. It’s also worth going for the scorched parts wheel arch inserts - gives a much better looking side view.
Brilliant work as always Glenn. My Sand Scorcher is still waiting for paint 12 years after building/bashing it. One of these days I will paint one, but after seeing all that work for paint would be difficult to bash with afterwards 😅.
I like seeing all these iconic kits…..many I will never own due to finances……I have become a collector of lower priced kits…..mostly different versions of the grasshopper and hornet……possibly a frog here in the near future
Thanks Glenn, I was convinced by TS07 and I’ve oredered one! I am building almost at the same time a scorcher. Body left and I will profit from your first hand experience! This body is a challenge - so thrilled and anxious at the same time!!! Hope I will get it as beautiful as yours… Scorcher build is awesome but I was surprised at the steering angle and the servo saver system. Not that wide, is it? I have read a simple fix, that is fixing directly the servo on the chassis by removing the transparent plastic nose to achieve direct steering with a double servo saver. Don’t know if my gibbering makes sense but I think it is an easy fix. Aside that what a pleasure to build this ‘antique´! Farewell Sir, you’re always an inspiration!
Love the racing white, Glenn it looks great. Wish I'd done mine in that colour. Like you say, painting a box art Sand Scorcher feels like a right passage. Your stickers look ace too - I have twice as many on mine (to hide all the imperfections!). Keep up the good work!
Looks great but I agree I found it almost a chore when I did mine because there was so much pressure to get the masking right. But it has pride of place in my collection because it’s such a stunning thing to look at. Thanks for sharing Glenn.
Looks bloody awesome Glenn! The Sand Scorcher was my very first RC car, I bought it from a friend for £30 back in the 80's haha. Makes me want to find another lol
Yep, I hear you, it is a right of passage for an RC guy. I also feel the burn of putting it off. I have 11 Tamiya kits here, Grasshopper, Frog, Hornet,Hotshot,Egress,Top Force EVO, Avanti, Avante Black, Super Avante and last but not least a TRF 503. All brand new kits all waiting to be built. The only one that gives me the heeBee GeeBees is the Scorcher. It matters so much that the paint is right on the buggy that I am almost dreading it LOL. Now I just have to leave my 1/5 and 1/8 scale RTR cars alone long enough to give me time to build the Tamiya stuff. As you can prob tell I am a Tamiya collector haha. I don't do FB or social media but happy to share my collection with you. I know you have done collection vids before. If you get the itch again let me know. I would be willing to air my collection for the show, I have 43 cars in total.
I still haven't got a sand scorcher (wanted from 1st release!) , there was no stock when i had the time and money 18 months age... BUT i did buy a set of the inner arches. I think they really look good with those. Mine when i get it will be original colour/box art BUT will be ragged to hell once built! I'm going to go for the box art bumper set up too. Talking to a mate at work we were saying how cool it would be to do a full size version BUT electric rather than petrol! We know its been done with a petrol engine already but to make the real one look like the original out of the box build.
I have 3 NIB kits waiting for the right time to build them. Not worked on one since the 80's, never built one from ground up. Currently we are busy with our grasshopper swarm, counting 7.
Its different when trying to involve kids and the whole family. Speed upgrades may not resonate the same way for them. Rather, its themed; my gf has makeup branded paint scheme, daughter is all glitter and pink, son is into camo/army and me, well I get the leftovers lol 😆
Wow, you've done a fantastic job on that Sand Scorcher, way better than I could have managed! If I got one I'd definitely go for non-boxart, not entirely sure what, but defo not box art. Excellent video as always!!
Good morning Glen!!!! Yeah I would absolutely love to do one but I don’t think I have the patience!! 🤣 The Subaru Brat video also turned me off to that one although that one would be the one I would be more likely to do. But man you really knocked that one out of the park!!! Gotta say you make people really want to attempt to do one. My friend BoB did one and he said it was a nightmare to do but I think he did a awesome job as well! I unfortunately have big clumsy hands and lack the patience. Great job buddy I really loved and appreciated this video and the work. Thanks
That's an absolute beaut mate, I honestly think that the little defects make it even more realistic for a 70s Baja desert racer. I think that the Mexico sticker would be the perfect finish. Just to add that little bit of realism the the Baja history.
Hi, You can be really proud. The time you invested was really worth it. The car turned out really nice. I love the look with the Racing White. This fits the car perfectly, especially in combination with the MCI decals
So if I was to buy one I won’t ask you to paint the body lol . It looks great. I am currently in France baking in the sunshine. Watching your video. Looking forward to your next video.
Nice one Glen. Yes definitely one I'm trying to get to add to the collection. Local hobby shop just got them in so it looks like I'd better make some more room...
Glen you really need to use pin strip masking tape. It bends to the curves of the body . I use it for custom work on real cars . Looks green tho and the vintage White 👌
Having just completed two of these, I can fully appreciate how difficult is this paint scheme. Perfection is impossible with this one. I think you've done an outstanding job! I'm always impressed by your Tamiya rattle can paint jobs. They always look as if they have been polished. I can't seem to achieve the same perfect finish. Would you consider posting a short how-to video? I really like the slightly off-white. Well done sir!!
A fair bit of work there, It took ages with my cancer scorcher but I did go down the road of scorched parts inner wheel arches, the wheels and dash and shocks as well mine is vintage as I have the ranger, rough rider and about the start my second shell for my old vintage chassis I have
Hi Glenn! -Great Vid! As ever, you're further down the joblist than me- I've two of these that have been hanging over me for a matter of years now! - hopefully I'll take some confidence from this video and get them done now, all the best mate :)
Looks good my friend!…I’m doing one now, but installing a brushless lipo combo in it..I will be doing a video of the install. Yes…the body is hard…but you can find some really cool bodies on eBay that you can buy for less than what an unpainted body costs with the addition of the paint. I painted one..and bought one, so I have two body shells. Might get another if I find a really cool one out there.
Racing white is so much better than the brilliant white👍the blue you got on the white was probably from not masking of the body from the inside aswell as the outside! But it looks spot on to me👏
Lovely that is🥰….that racing white looks much more period correct than bright white…..will look mega with all the alloy parts….well done on a tough job dude, anyone of us would be happy with that on our shelves👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This Is one hell of a hard ass body shell to do regardless how good your skills are and i think you have done a marvoules job i just hope mine comes even close and ill be pleased thats why ive been putting it off now for over 4 months and doing some others to build up the courage needed to even attempt it , but yours my friend has come up trumps imho, very well done and those OG decals do make a big difference too, be great to see it out on a light run video one nice sunny day perhaps :-) , cheers Glenn thanks for sharing.
G'day Glenn I wish I hadn't sold my brand new sandy in box I only sold it because box art looked to hard to do lol Monstar beetle was hard enough and super buggy champ. Would love to have a crack now looks so good since you finished it mate 👍👍
It looks superb! 👍👍 You've got to be pleased with the end result. As you say, it doesn't have to be prefect. Nothing ever is! 🙂 I've just finished a Sand Scorcher build myself, and being completely hopeless when it comes to hard bodies, I didn't even attempt to try box art!
When it’s all put together it’s stunning Glenn way to go buddy - I love it! I’ve never seen one of these in real life but it’s gotta be special thing 😃
Racing White is closest to the white color that VW used on the Bug in the 70s. I think the three exhaust brackets are supposed to be more loose rather than tight so that it can flex when it rolls over, otherwise the exhaust tip will just crack off.
He/She is a beauty. Is the body original or re re? Can't tell if with or without rear window. Are you going to upgrade or as what comes with the kit? If upgrade, rcchannel makes a good front metal bumper and rear metal bar plus AL wheels. Plain Jane is nice, but the full Monty is delicious.
I built mine quite awhile ago. I used the re-released decals. I wish that I did not. I do have the metal parts for mine. The wheels, front bumper and rear. It looks very cool with those parts. Thoughts?
Did you just say that the Subaru Brat was way easier than this?! That's a shame because I was thinking of attempting a Sand Scorcher, but the Brat was a mission for me so I think I'll pass. Yours looks great on screen Glenn, big kudos to you for that :-)
if I had a sand scorcher I`d paint it black with emerald green racing stripes with metal mesh for windows and a skeleton with a leather helmet and a bottle of jack daniels oh and tint the headlights green and put leds in them then I`d try and find scythe decals for the sides sorry if this comment is too long I`m just on my third cup of coffee =) =)
Hi Glenn, it’s been a while! Nice to see that you painted your own Sand Scorcher. I know what you’ve been through, you know Sand Scorchers are my specialty. I’ve done over 50 Sand Scorchers and I learned that patience is the key! One question, why didn’t you masked the complete body after the Racing White? You could save time there, but the final result was satisfying right? I really liked that you put on those MCI decals instead of those fake sponsor decals from Tamiya, great job Glenn! Hope to hear from you in the future. Best regards, Alex from The Netherlands Ps. The Brat is also a pain in the @ss to paint up
It’s a pleasure to see how good you’ve become at these builds, and I love how humble and honest you are never get bored of your content
Thanks Neil, yeah you know me my friend, I do my best 😅👊🏻
Great video on this...I'm prepping myself to finally build one. I've wanted to since I was 10 years old (I'm 53 now)

Tip from when I use to paint Rc planes.....spray the colour your covering firstly then the bleed will be white and stop the blue bleeding...
Oh wow I’ve never heard of that before but it makes perfect sense 😊😊😊

Having just completed two of these, I can fully appreciate how difficult is this paint scheme. Perfection is impossible with this one. I think you've done an outstanding job!
I'm always impressed by your Tamiya rattle can paint jobs. They always look as if they have been polished. I can't seem to achieve the same perfect finish. Would you consider posting a short how-to video?
I really like the slightly off-white. Well done sir!!
A fair bit of work there, It took ages with my cancer scorcher but I did go down the road of scorched parts inner wheel arches, the wheels and dash and shocks as well mine is vintage as I have the ranger, rough rider and about the start my second shell for my old vintage chassis I have
That’s fantastic 🤩
Thanks for watching and commenting my friend 👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends it is great to see vintage tamiya love, I saw your XR311 Vid and trying not to buy one and RC Channel hop ups for it
Hi Glenn! -Great Vid! As ever, you're further down the joblist than me- I've two of these that have been hanging over me for a matter of years now! - hopefully I'll take some confidence from this video and get them done now, all the best mate :)
Thanks Ben and good luck with yours 😅👊🏻
Looks good my friend!…I’m doing one now, but installing a brushless lipo combo in it..I will be doing a video of the install. Yes…the body is hard…but you can find some really cool bodies on eBay that you can buy for less than what an unpainted body costs with the addition of the paint. I painted one..and bought one, so I have two body shells. Might get another if I find a really cool one out there.
Excellent thanks for watching and leaving a comment 🤩👊🏻
Looks great!, I have always wanted one of these, now I need one, haha, Cheers mate!
Thank you for watching my friend 🤩👊🏻
Racing white is so much better than the brilliant white👍the blue you got on the white was probably from not masking of the body from the inside aswell as the outside! But it looks spot on to me👏
Thanks Phil 🤩👊🏻
Looks great mate!
Thanks buddy 😅👊🏻
Lovely that is🥰….that racing white looks much more period correct than bright white…..will look mega with all the alloy parts….well done on a tough job dude, anyone of us would be happy with that on our shelves👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you 🤩🤩🤩
This Is one hell of a hard ass body shell to do regardless how good your skills are and i think you have done a marvoules job i just hope mine comes even close and ill be pleased thats why ive been putting it off now for over 4 months and doing some others to build up the courage needed to even attempt it , but yours my friend has come up trumps imho, very well done and those OG decals do make a big difference too, be great to see it out on a light run video one nice sunny day perhaps :-) , cheers Glenn thanks for sharing.
Thanks Andrew 🤩
Yeah this is one build I’m so happy it’s finished 🤣👊🏻
turned out very nice
Thanks for watching 😊👊🏻
G'day Glenn I wish I hadn't sold my brand new sandy in box I only sold it because box art looked to hard to do lol Monstar beetle was hard enough and super buggy champ. Would love to have a crack now looks so good since you finished it mate 👍👍
Thanks Lionel 😊👊🏻
Love it! It’s just one of those designs that makes me smile 😎
Yeah totally agree, this car looks absolutely gorgeous in any colour my friend 🤩👊🏻
It looks superb! 👍👍 You've got to be pleased with the end result. As you say, it doesn't have to be prefect. Nothing ever is! 🙂
I've just finished a Sand Scorcher build myself, and being completely hopeless when it comes to hard bodies, I didn't even attempt to try box art!
Well tbh my friend, this car looks gorgeous with any colour paint on it 🤩🤩🤩
When it’s all put together it’s stunning Glenn way to go buddy - I love it! I’ve never seen one of these in real life but it’s gotta be special thing 😃
Haha it’s actually the first box art one I’ve seen my friend 😅👊🏻
Racing White is closest to the white color that VW used on the Bug in the 70s. I think the three exhaust brackets are supposed to be more loose rather than tight so that it can flex when it rolls over, otherwise the exhaust tip will just crack off.
Excellent thanks for your feedback my friend 🤩👊🏻
He/She is a beauty.
Is the body original or re re? Can't tell if with or without rear window.
Are you going to upgrade or as what comes with the kit?
If upgrade, rcchannel makes a good front metal bumper and rear metal bar plus AL wheels.
Plain Jane is nice, but the full Monty is delicious.
Thanks James 😊
Yeah I’ve got some alloy parts going on to it in the next video 😅👊🏻
Looks AWESOME!! Well Done! One of my favorite cars. ✌🏻👍🏻😎
Thanks Rick 🤩👊🏻
Looks good 👍 Really like the blue
Thanks for watching 😊👊🏻
I built mine quite awhile ago. I used the re-released decals. I wish that I did not. I do have the metal parts for mine. The wheels, front bumper and rear. It looks very cool with those parts. Thoughts?
Yeah I fit all the alloy bits on mine in the next video, it definitely takes it up a level or two 😍
@@TAMIYALegends Yes, I agree
Nice work👍🙂
Thanks John 😊👊🏻
It looks great, but damnit Glenn you put the number plates on backwards again 🙃
Did you just say that the Subaru Brat was way easier than this?! That's a shame because I was thinking of attempting a Sand Scorcher, but the Brat was a mission for me so I think I'll pass. Yours looks great on screen Glenn, big kudos to you for that :-)
Yeah I found the Brat a bit easier tbh 😅 but to be fair there’s not a great deal in it 😎👊🏻
Glenn good choice on the white. The brilliant white looks far too modern for an old beetle
Thanks Lee 😊👊🏻
if I had a sand scorcher I`d paint it black with emerald green racing stripes with metal mesh for windows and a skeleton with a leather helmet and a bottle of jack daniels oh and tint the headlights green and put leds in them
then I`d try and find scythe decals for the sides
sorry if this comment is too long I`m just on my third cup of coffee =) =)
Fantastic that sounds awesome 😎
All that and you still put the number plates on backwards 😂 great job I would never attempt box art on these.
Did I 🤣🤕🤕
Really nice!!!😁😁👍👍
Thank you 😇👊🏻
Hi Glenn, it’s been a while!
Best regards,
Alex from The Netherlands
Ps. The Brat is also a pain in the @ss to paint up
Hey my friend 😊
Yeah it was a fun one for sure, don’t think I’d like to do another one though 🤣
That looks amazing Glenn! Another great video 👍. I would love to get one of these but I find the thought of painting it very daunting 🙄
Haha I hear you Sean lol 😂
It was exactly the same for me 😅🤕🤕
