Awake, IMHO the best DT album. Everything that came after was written with a "virtuosic first, songwriting second" approach. I can remember each and every Awake song because songwriting for that album was superb.
I wouldn't say 'Falling into Infinity' is, but I see your point especially in the latter releases. 'Awake' and 'Octavarium' are my two fave DT records.

@@stonerdemon I really like FII. There are a couple of lesser tracks obviously, but stuff like 'Hells Kitchen', 'Lines in the Sand', 'Peruvian Skies' and especially 'Trial of Tears' have some absolutely beast Petrucci moments, as well as the band overall. It's partially the guitar, but also partially that he was using far less distortion in those days. You could still tell some clean element coming through that sound here, that's entirely gone these days.
90's Petrucci is the best. Best tone and best playing. He's phrasing had fusion vibes and a little funky back then. He's still awesome now but he don't plays like that anymore.

Good question. Around that time, he rocked a production Universe, as in the Lie official music video. This is probably a one-off LACS he had made for him. I can't say for sure, but this is my best guess without more info. Basically and probably, LACS.
@@MrChrisRP He did record awake with Universe witch he used on the video and but soon after Ibanez made him the black and white 7 string which was supposed to be a prototype for a 7 string JPM that never came to be. I have a guitar magazine were JP is featured talking about the songs on Awake and there he already has that black and white 7.
As far as I understand, the people at Ibanez didn't think that Petrucci would have the same appeal that, I don't know, George Lynch for example, so in their eyes a signature guitar wasn't a priority... Then Music Man came and they made the offer and they got the JP Signature. Then again, this is something I heard but I can't say for sure how true it is.
Am I the only one who doesn't miss the Ibanez sound and prefers MM? I don't really like most of their music after 2002 though (and especially after Portnoy left) but surely not because of the guitar tone.
It's not fake. It's authentic 100%. John "knows" me and even has played some parts live in the way that I improvised them. I wouldn't put some "fake" guitar in his video.

The only Petrucci riffs I can play 😂
Awake is my fav DT album, probably because of the 7 string sound ❤️
Best DT album by far
And it's only on 3 songs
My all time fav too, because of the realistic yet metaphorical lyric themes, as well as the emotional depth.
there are lots of 7string sound in DT archives but Awake is the first and most raw one
