    Always felt bad for Charlie. Bella is horrible to him. Every scene he looks desperate and sad. He tries to get to know her but he watches her ignore him, get with a horrible guy, and then she marries him!

    • @Xehanort10
      @Xehanort10 5 років тому +128

      Exactly. When he tries to put his foot down about Bella's obsession with Edward she throws a tantrum and tells him to let her have her own way or she'll leave. He's trying to protect his daughter from a total creep and yet is portrayed as an overprotective father standing in the way of "true love."

      Think of how extra horrible everything must look from his perspective with all the lies Bella feeds him to cover the vampire stuff. Even his life leading up to Bella coming to Forks is sad.
      Being Charlie is suffering.

      In addition, I think the best acting in this entire crap-fest came from Billy Burke. Those minuscule moments when he's onscreen (even in the fucking background) are legit the best. Dude barely has anything to work with and he shines in every goddamn scene! I'm all for KR's previous idea of just having Charlie be the star.

      What I find weird is that the series tried to make it seem like Charlie was bad at being a dad. When clearly the person at fault is the whiny child that didn’t respect her dad enough to not call him by his first name.

    Hey krimson I just realized, Kirsten Stewart was the best actress in the film. Out everyone she is the best. Now i know what everyone is thinking, am I insane? Well yes but hear me out. Bella in the book is a lifeless stand in. Cardboard has more personality than she does. She's bland, boring, and no one, no one could possibly enjoy her presence in real life. Thing is though, Kirsten Stewart clearly portrays that perfectly. Out of everyone on set she performs the adaption of Bella to a tee. Is she boring? Check. Bland? Of course. Emotionless? Absolutely. See what I'm getting at? Kirsten Stewart portrays her character the best out of all the other actors, by playing the perfect bland boring emotionless cut out of a character. No other actress could have pulled it off as well as she did. It takes talent to be that bad, and it looks like Kirsten Stewart has that talent.

    • @justsomecreatureofthisearth
      @justsomecreatureofthisearth 6 років тому +92

      Yes, exactly.
      The same (bad acting) was said about Jennifer Lawrence in Hunger Games, because of the emotionless and sometimes strange reactions to events.
      But THAT IS Katniss in the books. She is emotionally repressed almost all the time and sometimes has awkward, violent and misplaced bursts. J.Lawrence delivered a PERFECT portrayal of the book character.
      The same with k.Stewart. I haven't seen enough of her performances to have a large basis to rate her, but I'd say she is somewhere in the good to excellent acting area.
      She portrayed well the source material, it's just that Bella as a character is obnoxious.

    • @fightingmedialounge519
      @fightingmedialounge519 6 років тому +3

      Which is it? Is she bland or obnoxious.

    • @morganyoung3557
      @morganyoung3557 6 років тому +25

      just some creature of this earth at least Katniss had a good reason as to why she acted emotionally repressed, she lived in a brutal society where saying, doing, or feeling the wrong thing could get you killed. Bella has no excuse, she lives a very easy life and while her parents are divorced, they do love her and there isn’t a conflict about them arguing over who she should live with like what could happen with other stories about a child whose parents are divorced. Bella doesn’t live in a dystopian society where the biggest sporting event of the year is where 24 teenagers are forced to kill each other for the entertainment of the Capitol and serve as a warning towards the 12 Districts. Also in spite of repressing her emotions, it is said when Katniss just relaxes and actually allows herself to show some emotion, people find her to be rather likable and charming, that is a lot more than what I can say about Bella. Also Bella never has the level of PTSD that Katniss has after the first book which leads to her becoming even more withdrawn in later books unless she is around Peeta or Prim.

    Carlisle was my favorite character in Twilight. His backstory sounds like something out of Rice herself. Seriously, why couldn't the story have been about him? Oh, yeah, Meyer doesn't have the skill to actually write Carlisle's story as a book.

    How Charlie greets Bella’s date is how my dad actually greeted my dates in high school. He also used to say “I have guns, 40 acres and a backhoe.. no one will ever find you if you hurt my daughter”. It was obviously not a real threat... unless I was murdered or something, but it was hilarious. I actually loved it.

  • @GamersHolyArmy

    Bella being more honest with her father would've probably been the better option, just say "Oh my god Dad, someone's trying to kill me and I need to leave for a while until he's gone" and while that might be the same amount of worry, Charlie's not thinking she hates him.

If we really want to save Charlie finding out till the last book (which he still doesn't because Bella can't treat any of her human companions with care), couldn't she just say like "A bear got near me and it freaked me out. I just need to be away a few days."?

    I actually wrote sparkling vampires into one of my books but I made it work the sparkling only occurs in vampires with incredibly diluted blood in fact the sparkling is due to the fact that unlike pervious generations of vampire who catch fire in the light there is soo little vampire blood in them that their skin can't catch fire so instead it sparkles and is painful like having those little popper fireworks going off on your skin constantly their powers were also soo limited that a well trained human could over power them needless to say I used them as mooks.

  • @MahoganyDesk
    @MahoganyDesk 8 років тому +101

    ...I picked a strange set of videos to be my introduction to your series. Still, I like them.
    You mentioned earlier about what defines a Mary Sue. I personally agree with all you said but I add one more note. It's not just that the character is basically flawless and life is easy for them, but what makes a Mary Sue is also how the other characters react and interact with them. If you don't absolutely love the character - wanting to be best buddies, wanting to be them, and/or wanting to have sex with them - then there is something wrong with you. You're heartless, jealous, an idiot, the bad guy - take your pick - and something will happen to you to put you in your place.

  • @KodiHful

    It could have been that James didn't like being told "no." Perhaps he's a vampire with a personality disorder and when the Cullens protected Bella and told him he couldn't, he desired her because she was "off limits" more than her scent, and is doing it just to show them he can do whatever he wants? I dunno, though, I can't remember the book very well and I think my mind was basically numb for any of the details. Somehow I think even if my idea is true, it would have been a complete accident on Meyers part. "Oh, I accidentally made a character with a compelling trait?"

    Anyone want to watch Being Human, it's a world with Vampire logic that works.
    Stakes: heart=dead body= paralyzed
    Sunlight: they evolved.(simple and logical)
    Blood Drinking: if they drink too much, they get "drunk" or "high"
    Garlic: it's an allergic reaction, their vampire traits (teeth and their pupils expanding like a sharks) are exposed and they can't recede them.
    Fun thing fact: something that many stories forget is the invitation trait. In being human, if a vampire wants to go into a house not owned by them, they have to be invited, and if their not welcome and in the house, they have to get out as soon as possible, or their crispy.

    Ok I have to ask how did none of Bella's human doctors or nurses notice the bite Mark on her wrist? I'm sure that maybe Edwards "dad" could have covered it up with bandages or something but that shit is going to scar and even if it didn't he couldn't have stayed with her every time a nurse came in the change her bandages. Why make up a complet lie when a half truth would have worked so much better. Say she ran into some thugs that were going to do something unspeakable to her and Edward being a "discent" boyfriend and scared them away but not before Bella got hurt

  • @laurenking5114

    Okay, I'm not a fan of Twilight but I will defend it in this case: James' behaviour is explained. He's a cross between an avid hunter and a serial killer. He took interest in Bella because of her weird mary-sue blood, but after that it was his usual routine of relentlessly hunting down a single piece of prey. To put it simply, he's a madman who likes toying with people. It's not a food situation, it's a play situation.

    One thing I would bring up is... why the hell did Alice and Jasper think bringing Bella to Arizona was a good idea? Why didn't they bring her to Hawaii or something? I can buy Bella not having a passport on hand, which would mean they couldn't bring her to somewhere more remote, but the Cullens are rich as fuck and can definitely afford getting three plane tickets to Hawaii on a short notice and booking a rental car and a hotel room, Bella being an American citizen wouldn't need a passport, and that leads to Bella having AN ENTIRE FUCKING OCEAN between her and James. I can buy James being somewhat obsessed with her, but to just start swimming across the ocean for Vampire McDonalds? That takes a whole lot of dedication and I'm not even sure James would be up for it. And the "Alice and Jasper might start glittering all over if they're in Hawaii" doesn't even apply, because by that logic, that will also happen if they go to Arizona! Meanwhile, Alice can just predict whatever location James will be in next, which would allow for the rest of the Cullens to track him down and kill him. It's really not that hard!!!

    What is up with that dance studio? The entire thing is one open space with useless columns everywhere and no offices. An actual dance studio would have separated, decent sized rooms so that more than one class could happen at the same time, making more money for the business. There would also be an administration office, because dance studios are businesses that train people in the art of dance for money. I know these details may seem insignificant, but they just really bothered me.

    • @ravenvixen7903
      @ravenvixen7903 3 роки тому +3

      Smaller dance studios can be like this. If that is all the space they had, that's how it's laid out. I've been to a dance studio about that size that was set up the same way. If they split it, there isn't enough room to have multiple dance classes, unless you have smaller ones, when you could just have one class the same size as those two, maybe more because of the extra space.

    Watching through these reviews made me realize that it makes absolutely no sense that Edward (or the other Cullens, for that matter) would even be in high school. It's established in book (yes, I had a twilight phase. Sue me, I was in 5th and 6th grade at the height of it's popularity. I was dumb and had bad taste.) that Edward is exceptionally educated because of all the years he's been alive. What the hell does he have to gain by going to high school? His family is rich so he doesn't need to make money, he's stuck forever being a teenager so he can't exactly have a career. What does he stand to gain by going to a place like a highschool, crammed full of people who could blow his cover any minute? gdi not even the basic premise of a high school love story with vampires makes any freaking sense. This story just fails in every way possible.

    • @emespre

      It's been several years since I read it (I also had a Twilight phase...), but I think the reason given was that it lets them stay in one place for longer since it'll take longer for people to notice that they aren't ageing.

      @AndreRhineDavis 6 років тому +28

      Yes exactly. Why the hell would he want to keep going to school repeatedly for decades on end? Even if they can stay in one place longer if they give them younger ages, can't they just say they're homeschooling them?
      Edward has absolutely 100% no reason to go to school. I mean, he acts totally bored there anyway and doesn't learn anything new or socialise with anybody. Literally the only reason why he is there is so he can meet and interact with Bella.

      I've always wondered why the Cullen's didn't just go to college over and over. They could get a PhD in everything and stay in one place for a decade if they wanted to. Edward looks 17, so what? There are 30 year olds who still look like they're teenagers. Some people look young for their age. It's really not a big deal. (Like in Catch Me if You Can, everyone thought he was an older guy with youthful looks.) Plus, college would put him around other educated people. He could find a mature crowd to hang with. If he wants to be around people closer to his own age he can hang out with professors and no one would bat an eye. He doesn't have to go to school. He could get a job and do whatever. The thing is, yes, people get suspicious when children stay the same because kids grow and change fast. But an adult could look the same for 20 years and no one would care. My point is that the Cullen's think it's more logical to go to high school and move every 4 years than to do anything else and move maybe every 10-20 years.

    I will say a "subjective future" CAN be done well. for an example of this, just look up Dominic Deegan: Oracle for Hire. It's a webcomic where the main character can see the future, but it's only the UNCHANGED future, where if you do nothing to change your path, that's what WILL happen. Most of the series is about him seeing some awful future and working his hardest to change it.

    +KrimsonRogue One change that seems pretty obvious to me, as far as how to salvage this mountain of shit: that scene where some jerks tried to gang rape Bella... have Edward massacre them! Make that the big reveal that he's a vampire - that's the moment he loses control. Without that, there's no point to making him a vampire in the first place!
    Krim, take a break, then find something stupid, silly, and easy to tear into for fun, then curl up with Leia and a good book. *You've earned it!*

    So to answer your question about why James tracked Bella all the way to Phoenix...the answer is simple. He was tracking her because it was FUN for him. Apparently he was this extraordinary hunter and his whole life was obsessed with the kill and when Edward protected Bella on the baseball field, this, paired with the fact that Bella was a human who smelled really good, ignited James's bloodlust and he just HAD to kill her.

  • @totallywireddd
    @totallywireddd 2 роки тому +3

    I actually think that James going for the slow kill makes sense. He is a psycho so he enjoys toying with his pray and likes inflicting both psychological and physical pain. Filming her slowly dying is obviously better to torture Edward that just killing her. Also he went through so much trouble hunting her and following her around... of course he wants to kill her slowly and “enjoy it” instead of getting done with it. Idk , that part makes sense to me.

    I wish I were a planeswalker sometimes. That way I could travel to a plane where Twilight doesn't exist. Or travel back in time, destroy Stephenie Meyer's hard drive, put her in a straight jacket, and lock her in an abandoned mental asylum where no one could hear her screams. Then I could take over the world with my army of real vampires and laugh maniacally on a throne made from the bones of my enemies. A simple wish, really.
    But in all seriousness, I think the book probably could have focused on Rosalie as well. She actually goes through character development in Eclipse. Apparently she was gang-raped by her fiance and left for dead, only to be turned into a vampire at the last minute. She then went on a killing spree and took revenge on her fiance and his sycophant friends. That's much more interesting. Hell, it could have passed for a sequel to the Crow if you replaced vampires with undead musicians.

    Twilight was at its peak popularity when I was in middle school, & I honestly loved it. I'm not even ashamed of it because even though now I can acknowledge it's a badly written book, I know it's because I don't fit it's intended audience anymore. But at its time, it made my tween heart very happy lmao And that's what pretty much shapes my opinion about all writing. I don't think there's such a thing as "bad" writing since there's always someone out there who's gonna like your garbage, regardless of quality. Ultimately, writing is made for entertainment & enjoyment, & if it accomplishes that for someone, then it's good enough. I hope these sorts of thoughts never discourage any new writers from writing what they want to.
    edit: UNLESS it's the onion man, that dude NEEDS to be stopped.

      KrimsonRogue Thanks for the reply! I've got a few fanfics and short stories done already, though I'm always hesitant to share them. I'm decent at the short story format, it's the longer form I'm worried about. Keeping a consistent level and not dragging it out, but at the same time adding enough detail that it's not rushed. I have a distinct outline of the timeline of events, which is helping.
      What's really helped me to hone the craft so far is I'm a GM of a tabletop game, so I'm constantly having to write episodic format stories for people to play in. I've started treating the book in this way, with each chapter or group of chapters as an episode of sorts.
      I'm also the go-to person for my friends as a beta-reader, which helps as well. My problem is that *I'm* the beta-reader, so I don't have one for myself.

    6:26 hilariously when the podcast 372 Pages covered Midnight Sun, both hosts are huge baseball fans, and they tore apart the insane rules of the vampire version and said it made their favorite sport boring and confusing. So no, it doesn't work even if you like baseball.
    Now Quidditch has been argued to be insanely dull to read, and it's hard to argue against that on re-reads, but at least it was unique and exploited magic. You have more risk because injuries are healed easier and wizards are tougher. You have magical objects and equipment because magic exists. You can invent (or just find an existing) a sport that can be enhanced by super strength and speed that can only be played by 6 players (funny how Esme is so boring she sits out. Either that or more misogyny). Hell, why not basketball or soccer? It's not as highly regimented as baseball, and they are much faster games in general. Shoot or kick a ball a mile, have the field be an entire national park; something, anything.

    I think an easy explanation for Bell's blood being so sought after is for her to simply have a rare blood type. That would explain why the bad vampires went through all that trouble, so he could taste a kind of blood they don't come across too often.

    To give it, albeit little, credit, I do like the side character's backstories (why couldn't it be about them instead of Edward and Bella?) and the movie soundtrack (even though I still chuckle to myself each time I hear Supermassive Black Hole and Eye on Fire for being on the soundtrack...despite still liking them). Other then that, I just find both versions padded out and boring; they aren't even bad in a "so bad it's good way" like the Room, 80s dub Voltron or Faithful Findings.
    On the plus side, the future movies, mainly New Moon and especially Breaking Dawn to get into "so bad it's good" and aren't a slog to get through. Although, if you decide to review Breaking Dawn, as a warning, the birthing scene is fairly graphic in the book. It's not as bad in the movie. But it is something you have to mentality prepare yourself for in the book.
    Other then that, this was a great review and I agree with it a ton, especially the bit about the vampires being over powered as hell.

    You know how to make Twilight better? Have Carlisle be the protagonist. That way we could've seen how he became a vampire, how he managed to survive after being left for dead, how he found Esme and some of the others, how he was introduced to Jasper and Rosalie (from memory I think they were the only ones who weren't turned by Carlisle himself) and how and why he decided to become a doctor and manage his bloodlust. He would've been so interesting to read from the pov of. Instead, we have to read through Bella and her stupid relationship with Edward. And I say Carlisle out of all of them because of him being the eldest Cullen.

    When BioShock infinite wrote something better than a movie, it's sad.

    I only recently discovered these reviews, and while I'm not entirely sure what the story was, I do appreciate that Krimson's love for his cat (and her loyalty) were what gave him the strength to keep fighting

    Yeah... I'm ashamed to say that as a twelve years old, I even liked this book. Five years later and I'm cringing at the thought of it.

    8:56 Meyer did actually think about the werewolves problem if only by accident. At this point in the story only Sam and maybe Jared have become werewolves. Sure it's better than nothing but not really an option I fear.

    It's about 8 years late, it's such a dumb thing to nitpick & I'm sure others have mentioned it, but you know what detail bugs the crap out of me with the baseball thing? The Cullens are probably waiting literal /years/ between games. I've lived in the PNW for the better part of 10 years (the time has been a bit split up, but still) and can count the amount of times we heard thunder on one hand. And I can't recall any that happened any earlier than like, 9pm!

    Whoa. The acting at the end, where you had the sword, and all that stuff was going on, that was the best movie I've ever seen! Granted, I know some people who would disagree, but for them, if a fight lasts more than five seconds, they lose interest. Best. Movie. EVER!!! Not twilight, the thing at the end twilight can go suck a lemon.

      Rider Gilwin I don't think it's the best movie ever because it's full of clichés (that seem to be taken from anime) and the acting was pretty poor, it was still good, just far from the best movie I've seen.

    Alice only sees futures based on their decisions, so if they know about it they leave the decision to someone else and they can win, also the only times Carlisle has bitten anyone was to turn them, he's never drained just enough blood to stop someone from turning.

    That ending song sounds exactly like the intro for a freaking Minecraft roleplay series i used to watch called the haunted. It hit me with such nostalgia.
    Twilight sucks, but i like the haunted i guess

    Well, at least me music in the baseball scene was awesome. "Supermassive Black Hole" by Muse? Count me in (just for this once)!
    But yes, the movie sucks. A lot...

    How is it that this ass numbing peace of crape book/movie series is every single character not only more interesting then our leads, but are more likeable, and decent human beens? I also really feel sorry for bella's dad, he's trying to make the best out of a really bad situation but his own daughter doesn't give him the time of day, her boyfriend is blight on the face of the planet and not one person has the balls to tell this poor man the truth until his own flesh and blood becomes an inhuman monster which is in fact an over grown leach.

    It is insane how far this guy has come since these videos. This review was so of it's time, he talks almost identically to the nostalgia critic, and he even apologized in the first part for not pre-hating the book before he read it like a true 2016 internet user.

    You should do a review of the book/movie that was inspired by Twilight... Fifty Shades of Gray. A book about an orphaned boy during the civil war, going to... wait... sorry! That's the plot of Carolyn Reeder's, Shades of Grey. Well, the other might be "fun", too.
