(I’m not sure since I saw the movie many years ago, but it was something that had shocked me. He was tall and blonde BTW). There are parts of the book where Percy is not in his father's domain, although that isn't exposed until much later in the series when Percy goes through some really tough hardships. But even when he goes through that he doesn't lose his power. As a son of Poseidon his power steams from his blood, which comes with spiritual and physical manifestations of his power.

      WHICH THEY EVEN SHOW IN THE SECOND MOVIE WITH THE BARISTA!
      But that dude looked like Gipsy Danger just rose out of the sea. And sure, some mortals are able to see through the mist, Rachel being the most prominent one, but that makes it even more retarded of Poseidon to not just ride in on a boat or something. It would have been far more in line with Rick's writing to have him take the shape of a grizzled sea-captain instead of just walking out of the sea like he's practising for his role as "The Thing" or something.

    I just realized this film (surprise surprise) screwed up a MAJOR plot point of Percy's character- the guy has a hero complex. In the book, Percy was convinced he NEEDED to go on this quest because he knew that Grover was in mortal danger. He didn't trust anyone else to be able to save his best friend (and to be fair, Clarice wasn't exactly proving him entirely wrong...) And while this could stray into the Mary Sue area of a hero having a flaw that's NOT a flaw, in Percy's case it's at the heart of the ENTIRE CONSPIRACY thing Krimson mentioned in The Lightning Thief. It also plays a role in the sequel series "The Heroes of Olympus." So... yeah. Good job, movie! *thumbs up*

    • @gearoidgarvey8266
      @gearoidgarvey8266 5 років тому +91

      He didn't really have one, his flaw was that he wasn't able to let his friends die, this caused a lot of problems, but also helped out the future in some cases

    • @magicrainbowkitties1023
      @magicrainbowkitties1023 5 років тому +180

      Flaws and strengths are just certain characteristics taken to a positive or negative extreme. Take Percy for example: his hero complex makes it so that he's loyal and caring, but also makes him reckless and unable to let things go. Another great example is Luke. He has a moral compass, unlike many villains like him. While it leads him to rebel against the gods for abandoning him and his friends, which leads to his corruption, it also leads him to do the right thing in the end to defeat Kronos. A *MAJOR* theme of the story is those flaws and how they make us who we are, and the movie completely ignores it.

    First of all, the Hekatonkheires don't have eight arms and one face. They have one hundred arms and fifty faces. They do not look like average guys, just with more arms. They look monstrous.
    Also, even though they are only brought up in the fourth book, there are only three of them. And they're PRIMEVAL CHILDREN OF GAEA AND OURANOS, they aren't going to be working in a coffee shop and whistling and talking like completely normal people. Briares sure didn't. And speaking of which, in the book, two of them are faded and Briares (the third) is imprisoned on Alcatraz Island. So, no.

      Annabeth was reduced to "the pretty blonde", giving no space for her internal conflicts or intellect.
      Grover became the black comedy sidekick, completely ignoring his desperate search for Pan.
      Luke turned from a tragic story about feeling abandoned to a boasting brat.
      Clarise would have been left hanging from that tower by her underpants by the real one.

    My whole problem with this, is the fact they call him evil. He wasn't necessarily evil, as much as extremely paranoid. He feared what he did to his father would be done to him, and to prevent that, he devoured his children whole, but Gaia loved her children more than anything, so she kept Zeus in secret. Years later, she poisoned Chronos, making him throw up his now fully grow children and they all ganged up, sliced him up, and threw him in the lowest pits of Tarturus.

I mean, even later in the series in Heroes of Olympus, even Percy was understanding why Luke did what he did. His mom is litterally crazy and his dad is neglectful, he watched one of his best friend turn into a tree when he was 12 then had to watch the person he loved slowly fall in love with someone else. Not to mention that he felt betrayed by the gods especially. That can really screw up a person. (I'm not defending that hes a good guy though. He made awful decisions.) Luke was just a vunerable broken guy in which Kronos used as pawn.

  • @maximemasselink6764
    @maximemasselink6764 7 років тому +796

    I think Annabeth is the person who's getting screwed up the most. In the book, she was smart and her arc was that she wanted to prove herself. That was the whole reason why she went on the quest, but the movie is very different about that. Annabeth got on the quest because the movie needed a female hero and Percy talked to her, which is an awful begin for a character. But on the quest, she managed to do pretty much nothing, except for letting Percy do all the work and being around Percy, which also differs from the source material. Yes, she needed help and yes, she couldn't do everything on her own, but she was useful and she helped. It's also very terrible if the second scene with Percy and Annabeth shows us that ANNABETH ALREADY HAS FEELINGS FOR PERCY. This screams female love interest. And then, in this movie, she dies. Wow. After a whole movie doing not really anything exceptional, she dies, only to show the audience that the fleece is the most powerful thing ever, which raises ANOTHER question. IF THAT FLEECE IS SO GODDAMN POWERFUL, WHY DON'T THEY BRING IT ALONG IN EVERY QUEST? In the fifth book a lot of people die, why not fucking ressurrect them with the fleece? (Thalia is a different story, because she didn't die). So, that was Annabeth, and then I didn't even talk about the prophecy, something that really pissed me off. Maybe the most off all this trainwreck of a film

    Kronos appearing at the end of the movie (which he didn't appear in physical form until the 4th book and even then he was possessing Luke)
    The prophecy was completely messed up.
    Annabeth wasn't blonde in the last movie.
    And Grover is black (which would have been fine until they made him into the stereotypical black comedy sidekick.)
    I had hopes that these movies would be like Harry Potter and be a very large, successful series of books AND movies which it clearly deserves by the quality of the books. However, that isn't going to happen because some writers can barely stick to the source material at all. Always have to change crap that doesn't need to be changed for the sake of "entertainment".

    This is an old review, I know. But after stumbling across It i need to voice something that really pissed me off about this movie.
    This is a MASSIVE spoiler for the entire series, something that is incredibly huge that the film just throws out there.
    In the movie while they are on the pathetic excuse for Luke's yaught, they discover that half bloods from camp have joined him.
    They named chris earlier, but in this segment they toss out one incredibly important name, like its nothing.
    Selena Beaurigard. Why is this important? Because Selena, was a spy. Selena was a secret member of Luke's army right up until the final book in which her true nature is revealed. A moment that is incredibly impactful and was, honestly, personally shocking as we had a lot of development for Selena up to this moment.
    But the movie just tosses it out there like it doesnt matter. Completely killing her entire character and the events she impacts.
    Also, in the movies final battle against Kronos. They try to make Percy's sword the cursed blade from the prophecy. Which is just wrong. The cursed blade was Annabeths dagger, I'm sure, or at the very least something that wasn't percy's sword.
    It wasnt even Percy that kills Kronos with the cursed blade, its Luke.
    Every single word of the prophecy, they got wrong. Thank fuck this movie series died.

    • @voteDC
      @voteDC 3 роки тому +9

      You are right, it was Annabeth's dagger. It was the cursed blade because Luke broke his promise to always try and protect Annabeth.

    • @bigchungus6827
      @bigchungus6827 3 роки тому +5

      @@voteDC Riptide was also cursed, but that whole subplot gets wrapped up in book 3 and isn't relevant to the final conflict. Going by the wording of the prophecy, you'd assume either Riptide or Backbiter would be the cursed blade, which makes the whole twist in book 5 very well done. And the movie does this.

    They didn't just fuck over the entire series, they fucked over this series, and the Hero's of Olympus series. To list but one reason (and several other complaints):
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------Spoilers ahead--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    By not going to Cires island (the lady who turned guys into guinea pigs), they gave Reyna no reason to be at camp Jupiter, meaning that she wouldn't be able to: deliver the Athena Parthenos, delay the attack on Camp Half Blood, indirectly introduce Arion into the story and kill Orion (I could keep going, but we'd be here awhile). However, the writers of these movies have messed up so much of original plot, that this is the least of their worries
    Also, in the opening scene, the cyclopes throw Thalia behind them which means that the cyclopes are inside of the barrier when it is created, giving them free access to Grover, Luke and Annabeth, who in the next shot are standing what looks like 5 feet away from the shield.
    12:09
    It's established in the books that tech acts as big "I'm here, come kill me!" beacons for monsters.
    15:59
    Actually, if that Chris is Chris Rodriguez, then it would make sense for him to be there, since he deserts over to Luke's army.
    20:27
    Percy doesn't actually have complete control over all water. In Mark of Athena, it was a challenge to control Porkie's (I forget his real name's) water. The movie doesn't give a good explanation though.
    Couldn't Percy just raise the water to block the shot from Luke's bolt? Or wash him into the water bellow?
    26:21
    To be fair to the movie, Riptide does reappear in his pocket in the books.
    Kronos doesn't take the form of a bunch of jammed together corn chips in the books, he takes Luke's body. The big red giant is just an excuse to have an action scene.
    Did those fuckers just leave Kronos on the island? Why didn't they ask Hermes to give him a one way ticket to Tartarus? Why did they leave it for Luke to recover?
    Dionysus is the only good character in this movie, mainly since he has some funny lines, and is a fairly good portrayal of the books Dionysus
    0/10. This movie just makes me sad and angry. Pass me some of the hot chocolate and painkillers Krimson, I'm going to need a good drink.

    I realize now, all this time later, that basically the reason they included 'Circe Land' really came down to budget. This segment was filmed in what was once Six Flags New Orleans, which saved the studio money, as they didn't need to build a set, fly to a more expensive location like New Zealand, or pay for more special effects. They just needed to throw chunk change at Six Flags and the city of New Orleans, the latter of which unfortunately needed all the money it could get (and still does). It also borrows elements from the first book, where Percy and his friends visited an amusement park to retrieve an item for Ares.

    You know what I'll say it, the real reason this movie fails on EVERY level is not because of the actors and it's not because of the director. The reason this movie fails is because of the story and no not the story it was based on I mean the movies own story they effed up so badly and filled with holes that a slice of cheese has less holes. The actors are great, because of the movie when I picture Percy in real life I only see Logan lerman, when I picture Annabeth i see a blonde Alexandria Daddario, Hell when I picture Zues I see Sean Beam so I know that the actors are perfect but the way the changed the story just makes it such a bad movie that everything looks bad like Tyson. They didn't have mist for him so they couldn't do the Percy and him being friends before they went to camp, they blurted out Selina's name out so her story is ruined and the cursed blade thing is so laughably bad that it's sad and they're is nothing about riptide that is cursed. This is just a bad attempt to tell a story to fill the void harry potter left that it hurts itself in the process.

    12:36 You know, when you exclude Mr D from the 1st book. I was happy to see they included him.in the second one.
    Then at this scene I realised why something was off. Chiron wasn't here, the person who assigned the quest was Tantalus who was Chiron's replacement as the Gods suspected Chiron of poisoning Thalia.

      The biggest problem lies in the writing, I feel, not the direction of the movie. The writers took a ton of good material and said, "eh, we can do better" and then threw it out. While the director should have said hey, what the heck is this, as the director and all, I feel like they just wanted to get something out that would make money, whether it was true to the material or not.

    Another continuity break is that in the movie it appears that he decided to stay in Camp Half Blood year round and keep training which is why he's able to surf on tidal waves and do side flips over Polyphemus with ease. In the book, however Percy decides not to live in Camp Half Blood and instead goes back home, which causes his skills to get rusty and contributes to him not knowing how to use his powers very well. He almost dies near the beginning because he practically forgot how to fight monsters. And though he gets better at using his powers with each book, it isn't until the last book that he truly masters his abilities, and that's only because he took a dip in the Styx

    This is what happens when the writers take another authors story, try to make it their own, and then have no idea where to go forward with the altered continuity.
    These two movies are barely connected because they had to backtrack when they realized they don't know how to write their own story without using someone else's as a pedestal
