The Bob Graham Sunshine Skyway Bridge, often referred to as the Sunshine Skyway Bridge or simply the Skyway, is a cable-stayed bridge spanning the Lower Tampa Bay connecting St. Petersburg, Florida to Terra Ceia. The current Sunshine Skyway opened in 1987 and is the second bridge of that name on the site. It was designed by the Figg & Muller Engineering Group and built by the American Bridge Company and is considered a symbol of Florida.
The four-lane bridge carries Interstate 275 and U.S. Route 19, passing through Pinellas County, Hillsborough County, and Manatee County. It is a toll road, with a $1.50 toll assessed on two-axle vehicles traveling in either direction and collected via cash or the state's SunPass system.
The original bridge opened in 1954 and was the site of two major maritime disasters within a few months in 1980. In January 1980, the United States Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn collided with the tanker Capricorn near the bridge, resulting in the sinking of the cutter and the loss of 23 crew members. In May 1980, the freighter MV Summit Venture collided with a bridge support during a sudden squall, resulting in the structural collapse of the southbound span and the deaths of 35 people when vehicles plunged into Tampa Bay.[8] Within a few years, the damaged span was demolished, the surviving span was partially demolished and converted into a long fishing pier, and the current bridge was built.

I drive over it just look at the road. My palms sweat but if I don't let it get in my head I enjoy. It's beautiful up there.

This may be the world’s longest video driving on the Skyway , not the longest bridge in the world. Also the bridge is closed whenever a bad storm is in the area. Going up the bridge feels like you’re in a plane that’s about to take flight. Awesome video.

I was glad to read from you that they close the bridge for bad storms! I moved back to Indiana in '93 & have only been back to visit a couple of times. I've seen pictures of the bridge with the lights. It's very nice. I have never been over the new bridge.
Born in Rochester NY moved to Fla in 1957 when I was two. Raised in St Petersburg and was constantly visiting another family in Sarasota.Our family of four had so much fun traveling with mom and dad. GOOD OL DAZE ❤❤

When i lived in St. Pete, we used to fish off the old bridge. New bridge is awesome.
I was with my parents In Florida And drove across the old bridge a few days after it was hit by the ship! Seeing that section taken out of the bridge on the other side was so scary and caused me to have anxiety from bridges after that point! I was only a child when we drove across and traffic was backed up and we had to set for a long time as traffic moved slowly starring at that section that was gone knowing all those people fell off including a Greyhound full of kids! 😢
Don’t think I could do this..been on Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and Chesapeake Bay Bridge too. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge ( by Annapolis) is scary for me. They even have signs saying if needed there are people who will drive for you. This video is very nice , thanks for sharing.

That is the truth about the Chesapeake Bay bridge and tunnel. If you are afraid to drive across the bridge, they have bridge escorts to drive you across the bridge. That Chesapeake Bay Bridge and tunnel is freaking scary for a lot of people. It doesn't bother me because I have been crossing that bridge for so long. A lot of tractor trailers jack knife on the Chesapeake Bay bridge and tunnel. When crossing the bridge, you get the feeling of rocking motion on the bridge. 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮and it looks like you are floating across the waters. The bridge is about twenty-two miles across from Maryland to Virginia Beach, VA.

I just kept wanting to squeal, “Pan right! Pan right!” because I wanted to see Anna Maria Island. :) Been flying into Tampa, and driving to AMI since 80’s. Paradise ❤️❤️❤️ But this bridge always makes me anxious.
The old skyway was worse. Steeper climb & metal grate across the top & you could see through to the water below. Hated it!
Went over the old one during a storm with waves crashing over the sides…been on this one twice(not by choice) scared the life out of me.😊
Hey, that was a nice rest stop. That's nicer than the ones in NC an VA. It's like you're on vacation, looking at the water. My parents and I used to live in Tampa from my ages 4-5. My dad used to drive us to my great aunt's house in St. Petersburg and I remember it took us around 45 minutes to get there. Based on the length of this video just going over the Skyway, this is probably about right.
That's a scary bridge to drive over. I've done it twice. It's a beautiful view but feels too high up.
What is scarier are the crazy drivers that feel the 70 mph speed limit is not fast enough to travel across this bridge.
Made me homesick for Florida. Drove over this bridge several times. Never bothered me which was surprising because I used to have horrible anxiety and panic attacks. Now with medication I totally enjoyed the beauty of it all. A number of people had ended their lives jumping from the highest point. 26:22

Just seen this video. I have a fear of bridges and it doesn't look to bad to cross over. I thought driving it would take you up towards the sky! I'm thinking of going to Florida and was intimidated by the size of the bridge. Thank you for sharing this, i now think i can drive it! 😊
Have driven over this bridge several times and it's just beautiful....can't imagine you'd have any problem driving over it. It's nothing like the bridge it replaced----THAT drive was sheer agony!

The key west bridge is 7 miles long over water but the bridge is down low close to the water.

They close it now but didn’t use to i was five years old when the cargo ship hit it I’ve never liked the thing. Good fishing under it on the old bridge.

This is the only bridge I've ever been freaked out on while driving over it a few years back. I think it was the combination of the steep grade, very low side walls and height that did me in. I was very happy to get to the other side, and actually took a different route back to avoid it. If you've got even mild gephyrophobia, this is definitely not the bridge for you.

I have been over that scary bridge many times. It felt like my car was going to flip backwards when I got to the top.
With our business, my husband and I have to drive this bridge on almost a daily basis. I am deathly afraid of heights and I always make him drive in the lanes that are nearest to the center of the bridge. But, I am still white knuckling it all the way across until we get back on to firm land again. It is beautiful to look at, but it scares the bejeepers out of me every time we have to drive it.
I've driven on this bridge, and I hated it. The first time, I tried driving through a storm, I turned around and waited another day. The next time, I got the courage to drive on it. I don't think I'll ever do that again.

I have Traveled on Skyway bridge a few times. I was driving up the bridge while a Bird seemed like was flying near me Well. When I was as high as the Bird and just saw the Sky, Weird feeling. Did Not like that.
And this is the New Skyway bridge. The old one Fell into the water years ago. I remember that. Beautiful Bridge. But Not driving on it anymore. 😁🙏

The old Skyway was much worse. It had a steeper arch & when you were at the top, it was metal grate that you could see through to the water below. I hated going over it. Never went over the new one before moving back to Indiana.
