Glencoe's Most Exposed Mountain Hill Walk!? Rhyolite Romp | Ossian's Cave

- The most exposed hill walk in Glencoe, probably in whole of Scotland is at the Aonach Dubh - the Rhyolite Romp. The Rhyolite Romp crosses the whole Aonach Dubh West and North-Face and ends in the Corrie of Stob Coire Nam Beith. In this Video we are starting at the Dinner-Time Buttress and heading East, to the Aonach Dubh North Face on the Rhyolite Romp and traversing at the Ossian's Cave back direction Dinner-Time Buttress. Due to our late start we needed to bail out via a green belt to the top of Aonach Dubh - but see it for yourself in the video.

Amazing video....thank you so much. I have looked up at Aonach Dubh and Ossians cave hundreds of times as I passed through Glencoe but never thought you could get to it without rock climbing. I am now 80 and too old for this sort of adventure but your video means I can see that I could have done it. Can you tell me which guidebook this route was in as my grandson is getting interested in scrambling. Thanks again.Hope to see more of your videos in future.

I felt the CMD arete was a stroll in the dry, different ball game in poor conditions.

Can't wait to do the CMD myself, the last time I wanted to do it it was completely in the clouds so I decided not to do it ( probably still to much a German that I want to see something 😂), and in winter I am not sure if I like winter 1st time tours when they involve scrambling so I really hope I'll get still a chance this year 😎

Thanks a lot DiZZy ViziOn. It is absolutely stunning and I think much better than the dinner-time buttress. To be honest in my point of view the only interesting part of the dinner-time buttress is the gully, the traverse is the whole time interesting and the way up to the other level below the Ossian's Cave is for sure as interesting 😉. The traverse continues basically 10 meter below where we decided to go up the green belt and should lead you to the upper bit of the dinner-time buttress from where you can go direction amphitheatre - haven't done the whole one yet so as I believe it will need a full day.

Wow, what an interesting route. Certainly looks like a contender for narrowest ledge.
It's absolutely fantastic, but you really need to have the right weather conditions for it - I would say 3 days no rain as the ground is rather loose.

Yeah we definitely did the right decision would have been otherwise really tricky to find a ledge which has less traffic than the Mount Everest 😂😂😂

The whole romp starts from the Coire nam Beith, traverses at Ossian's Cave and basically finishes at the dinner-time buttress. Let me know when you are around when I have time we can do it together 😉

We hiked from the top a hiking path down to the car (around 10km). Tours which I haven’t done before or are not really documented on the internet I do rather with a lighter pack (e.g. no wild camping equipment) as you never know what to expect. This particular route is unfortunately rather known for its tragic accidents which occurred in the past when people tried to climb into the cave. There also was once a „book“ in the cave but it got removed for reducing the temptation 😉. Would love to do the whole route which is basically the whole way back on a different ledge but the navigation is difficult further up as well it would need to be dry for at least 1 week (sounds little but in Scotland it is asking for a lot 😅)

The sudden loss of daylight at the end was, to the sudden loss of weight support that occurs when falling off the edge of a precipitous cliff, preferable.

Hi MaliceGLA, the whole Rhyolite Romp is probably 3.5km long and starts already from the Corrie bei Stob Coire nam Beith - the start from below the dinner-time buttress and back to the buttress is probably 2 km long - hope it helps. ATB Stripey
Stripey hat guy that side looks amazing! We went up to the top of bidean from the 3 sisters carpark last time the views are beautiful (also asked her to marry me 😀) is this way relatively safe? I'd like to take her with me up to ossians cave. Also do you have a link to the book you have for the route?

The path down to the cave is pretty safe in dry conditions I would say but any little error/slip could end really really bad. I personally would never do this hike in wet conditions, only if it wasn't raining in 3 days or more and never ever with snow/slush. The way up to the foot of Ossian's cave is probably the most dangerous bit as it is notoriously wet + north face (slimy rock). We went here the bottom way as it gives a better view of the cave. I also read about a lot of fatalities who tried to go into the cave so I can only recommend not to try it!
The book with the route of the Ossian's Cave/ Ryholite Romp called is Scrambles in Lochaber (link in description) - also the video 'wild camping on an exposed ledge' is on the Ryholite Romp for a different view which might help.

Hi Dylan the Rhyolite Romp is rather a hill walk than a scramble, every so often pretty exposed which comes not really out in the video - at Ossian's Cave it is pretty wet and slippery. The path hiked in the video was roughly +980m and 16.5km and I believe it was roughly 6-7 hrs. I also answered MaliceGLA about it in a wee bit more detail - might help mate.

hmm - not ideal to post a video encouraging this sort of thing in the evening - I can think of a lot of poor sods who have to go out and scrape people off the mountains who wouldn't appreciate it. Best film it earlier in the day with a safe ending.
