    This is what's missing in today's Joker.
    He's gotten too big, planning huge terrorist schemes that blow up cities and doing horrendous acts that rival Jigsaw. But here we see Joker doing something so unbelievably cooky and silly, yet still retaining his sadistic and chaotic nature.
    THAT to me, is the true Joker. A true Clown Prince.

      Well, that's the case with many popular villains like Lex Luthor or Doctor Octopus. Here they're just stealing some high-tech thing but here they're causing havoc on a massive scale or creepiness like something out of a horror movie.

      I mean you do realize this is the same show that has one of joker’s plans as “give me money or I’ll drop an actual nuke on Gotham” right? Like I get what you’re saying but to act like Joker committing those types of crimes is a modern thing is a bit disingenuous. He’s been like that for a long time going back and forth from doing stupid stuff like joker fish and running away from the IRS to nuking multiple populated cities and committing horrible atrocities to innocent people because it’s funny to him. Joker by his very nature is chaotic and can go from being someone humbled by a normal middle aged guy with a fake bomb to someone even Superman is scared of at the drop of a hat. That’s part of what makes him great, the complete uncertainty of what he’ll do next.

      It is a shame that so many of the recent takes on Joker mainly in live-action film focus on more grounded iterations, I like plenty of them but it does feel a bit tired now. I mean laughing gas is arguably his most iconic weapon and he hasn't used that in a live-action film since 1989.

      @@tomtudorweaver1078 _"I mean laughing gas is arguably his most iconic weapon and he hasn't used that in a live-action film since 1989."_
      I wouldn't say gas is his most iconic weapon though he sometimes uses "Joker toxin" (in any form, really), his iconic weapons would be the playing cards (razor sharp or exploding) and the acid-spraying flower.

    Bruce Timm praised the music in this episode, he wanted the score to sound like a horror movie, making reference to the film Alien, while also calling it the "weirdest" music in the whole series, stating it "builds a weird tension" behind the Joker that most viewers consciously wouldn't be aware of.

  • @Regenmacher175
    @Regenmacher175 Рік тому +39

    The Joker doesn't really care about getting the copyright for the fish. He's just setting up a situation where he asks people to change the way the world works or else he'll kill them. Since he knows they can't do as he wants, he feels he now gets to kill them.

    • @kenjutsukata1o1
      @kenjutsukata1o1 Рік тому +10

      I think it's more about it being funny to him than 'justification' to kill them. He's never really needed justification for anything he does. Batman himself says in this episode that the entire reason he's doing it is because it's a sick joke for him. So he knows they can't change it, which means they can't avoid death, and he thinks that's hilarious.

    This episode is based on an old classic Joker story from 1978, the brilliancy of this scheme is that it is a complete joke and the Joker knows it, he's completely aware that he can't get those fishes copyrighted, and that's part of the joke, he just acts like he's upset about it

    Another Bruce Timm/Paul Dini deluxe presentation.
    This was an algamation of 3 actual comic issues (I've read one of them).
    So signature in it's storyline because of the material it's based on.
    Keeping me on the edge of my seat for sure.
    In fact, it almost feels very cinematic.
    From a much quieter start to a more quieter and ambiguous ending, it's one of the best Joker episodes ever.

  • @johnnysparkle

    According to Eric Radomski, Bruce Timm directed this episode as a result of the network not wanting to pay for an extra director, leading to the two splitting seven episodes that weren't previously assigned to anyone, and adding them to their normal workloads.

    Somebody else, possibly several people, have mentioned this is based on a comic story and I will reiterate that. It's very good, it's collected in an omnibus called Strange Apparitions and is well worth seeking out if you want a really, really good Batman story that has loads of appearances from famous and some not so famous Bat villains from the 70s. Some of them first appearances I think. You can tell the creators of this series loved that era as well, Rupert Thorne is in it a lot and they generally delve into the interiority of the villains.
    Reading it when I picked it up from my library by pure chance was one of the things that made me fall out of love with modern comics frankly. It's an omnibus so it's a collection of like, 7 issues I think and it tells a story that these days, would take up about 30 issues. There's not a wasted panel/page and it weaves multiple storylines together so well. By the end of it, you genuinely feel like Batman has been through a life changing experience.... of course because it's a comic book, none of those things had any real effect going forward. So some comics things are still the same.

    I know the Superman series did more in terms of crossovers with other DC heroes, but it would've been so funny if in this episode Joker had this grand scheme, only for Aquaman to show up and be pissed off for what he did to the fish.
    This and Joker's Wild are easily my two favorite Joker episodes. Joker's Wild is just such a fun premise to the point that Joker is arguably the central character for a lot of it, and this one is such a great example of a Joker scheme. This really makes me miss the goofier aspects of the Joker that the recent films have somewhat glossed over in favor of darker/more grounded takes. I mean his laughing gas, arguably his most iconic weapon hasn't been used in a film since 1989.

    6:35 Ok, story time, kinda sad but my weird twisted sense of humor got a genuine chuckle from this because... about six months ago my best friend Maisie was dating this guy, but then broke up with him cause he was an abusive gaslighting piece of shit, kinda like ol' Mr J. It was right around Christmas, and I remember because about a week before Christmas, I hung out with her and she had mentioned she knew he was getting her an authentic mermaid tale, one that you could wear in a pool, something she really really woulda loved. Also important, AGES ago she took one of those Insta games where it'd randomly give you a fictional character for "what your next relationship will be like", and for her it showed Harley and Joker, which was right before she met Brill (the abusive tiny wiener). So when this scene popped up at 6:35, I genuinely was like, "Hey look, it's Maisie and Brill...". I feel kinda bad laughing but she's told me she's relatively over it. I don't know, this just reminded me of her is all, I don't know. Hope you guys have a good day, sorry for potentially trauma dumping!
