One of the most powerful scenes is when John looks himself into the mirror. He was a hard nosed gangster, but for a few seconds you could see him turn back into that scared little boy he was at that prison.
people still do it anyway specially in the part of the uk where im from its one of them laws like riding a bicycle on a pavement nobody gives a shit the way the police see it as well they got better things to do than telling somebody to stop smoking at a bus stop or telling them to get off the pavement with the bicycle
The acting in that scene is superb. Ron Eldard is a very underrated actor. Great movie, great scene. Thanks for posting. With such a cast and a well told, good story, this movie should have gotten more recognition.
This is *so* well acted. At no point did I doubt anyone's performance, it was like I was literally watching 3 real people who share this fucked up past. Tommy has this distant look in his eyes, and this shaky quality in his voice when he says" you gave us so much more to remember". It's like he's got PTSD from his childhood, and he just carries it very believably. John has this undertone of seething hatred when he says "why don't you take your time, it'll come to you". It's like he knows that killing Nokes isn't enough, he wants him to own up to his past before he dies. Such a powerful scene.
But then you have to ask, is there ever enough? They gave him the moment of realization as to his situation. He knew he wasn't walking out of that diner. And he didn't get to finish his meatloaf. He got his.
and that's the problem with human beings. Animals don't have weapons so they have to rely on there claws and teeth to kill. But humans have weaponry and intelligence. Since when is a swift death not good enough that we have to mutilate somebody before they die. The guy's heart was probably beating out of his chest when he realize it was the same kids he raped that wanted to kill him. The physiological trauma alone was satisfying enough to get the point across. What is wrong with people when the have to torture somebody to death just to be happy. It makes you no better than the man you killed.
Who cares, he's dead, dead is dead. IF the only thing keeping you from acting like a savage animal is justification, then you're not that good a human being either mates.
This scene is excellent. The best scene in the movie in my opinion. The dialogue is lifted word for word from Lorenzo Carcaterra's book which adds to its quality. You can feel the emotion coming through the screen. In all the times I have seen this movie, this scene always amazes me. It almost seems real.
@Enrico Chicco Cianci He really has you wondering as to what goes through his head throughout. I'd never thought of what you say on the final expression but yes, you may well have nailed it. Although, I'd just put it down to him looking forward to the upcoming moment.
glenfenderman He probably forgot about the four Hells Kitchen boys as they were very young when they were under his charge. He doesn’t even recognise John & Tommy here until John tells him who they are. However Ralph Ferguson recognises all of them in the court room when he’s brought in during the trial as you can see his personal view of the four as little kids, not as adults. However in the book by Lorenzo, it states that with other inmates the guards left most of them alone& drew the line with them as they were more dangerous & abusing them was suicidal, where as these four were easy pickings. The exception is Rizzo as he crossed the line & they best him to death.
when he looks in that mirror he knew he was going to get the best sleep of his life that night even if it was in a cell. this movie was hard to watch and ive watched some fucked up stuff on the internet and horror movies over the years but this really got me inside was just about to turn it off when this scene came on
PhoenixFIrebird I thought that was strongly implied as well. When Nokes is thinking back, and says "all of yous". I supposed he could just be referring to their group, but I interpreted it to mean the many other boys he abused.
It's been a long time since I saw this film but one scene from it still haunts me. The one where the guard made a boy pray to god while raping him. I don't even have words for this level of cruelty. As many wrote it before the guard's got himself too easy way out comparing to what he has done to these boys.
Ron Eldard is one of the most ridiculously slept on actors. Ever!!! He was great in this as "John" and in "Bastard Out Of Carolina" as The despicable "Glen".
Ron Ellard playing a hardened career criminal turning back into a scared little boy at the sight of the leader of the ring who abused him. Billy Craddup looks like he's carried this since the abused only for the line "it's a little harder for us to forget because you have us so much more to remember" and for Sean Nokes to take 7 shots was so satisfying to conclude this scene
"Oh you ordered the meatloaf. The brisket here is really good.... only you would never know it... you fucked up" What a way to tell someone he is going to die. Its criminal how this movie never got the appreciation it deserved for its engaging story, perfect casting, the acting, and the script.
I've returned to this vid because of a previous comment of mine has been replied to yesterday, but, seeing (and enjoying) it again, I think the music is hauntingly perfect in a similar way to that in the Billy 'Bats' Goodfellas scene and the use of the Bard of Salford, John Cooper Clarke's 'Evidently Chickentown' at the end of whichever episode of The Sopranos when you knew via Phil's previous sudden mood swing that it was the start of the end for Tony.
ron eldards thousand yard stare into the mirror Is perhaps my favourite part of this my favourite movie. Its very like the one he did in black hawk down.
Thanks for posting. I was hoping you would start the scene where they bought the two guys discussing politics drinks but I appreciate you posting anyway.
Why is this the only Sleepers scene obviously not allowed up here? The other copies also have poor quality. Cause the scene more or less IS the film? Anyway,I mean,No disrespect to Crudup,he holds his own but Ron Eldard completely murders both the scene and Bacon, stealing the whole film. Okay, along with suave oldschooler Gassman. John goes from cold badass to a scared little boy again(that slo-mo and song, camera work,acting...boom)before feeling the very real release, closure and revenge has been dropped in his lap and he is gonna savour it. Tortured, focused and in control. Superb line delivery also..."Why dont you take your time,it will come to you!" ,"Yeah,we aint kids now!" and"What I Always wanted...Just to watch you die..." Eldards career never really went anywhere but if his contribution to cinema is being the blonde dude who blows Bacons brains out in Sleepers? Well, awesome. Its a legendary scene, one could do Worse. PS. Dude has a cool voice too....
I think that Billy crudup is probably one of the least respected actors in Hollywood because in every movie that he's in he gives brilliant performances whether it be sleepers Almost Famous there's a few other movies I can think of but he is an exceptional actor and the whole cast the four boys with Billy crudup Brad Pitt Jason Patric and I can't remember the other guy's name that was a phenomenal cast that they put together including Kevin Bacon Minnie Driver shakes his dad when they were kids and there's probably a couple other people that I left out but this has to go down as one of my top 10 all-time favorite movies
bacon was brave for taking on this role, but not once have I ever thought of him as bad for doing so. The film was good and if anything he highlighted the issue of abuse that DOES GO ON and made it that little bit harder to get away with. Everyone whose ever abused kids has watched this film and must be wondering if their time will come. Little kids grow into big kids and they don't forget. Its very easy to screw up a life if you cause enough trauma to it at an early age. To do that to a minor so you can get a quick fix is one of lifes greatest sins.

This is almost on the same level as the Billy Batts scene ...almost.
pigs trotters pg goodfellas yes another great scene . Although I think this one has more intensity.
This was the reason I downloaded Witchi Tai To (fitted better than Donovan)
Very well put my friend. I was thinking the same.
i absolutely agree and when he sees nokes you can see it also.
"Its a little harder for us to forget. You gave us so much more to remember" damn
This is how any victim of a sex crime should be able to take care of the person who hurt them.
Sami Lo I agree
Sami Lo yes but we have to have a license for a gun
The only real justice a child abuser can face is at the hands of those who's lives he destroyed.

Averon Destiny That means he played the part well.
Seen Ron in ER....he was fantastic in that as well
The greatest scene ever in movie history. thank u for putting this up.

I actually think this death was too merciful for him
Should have sent Marcellus Wallace to get medieval on him
Exactly, this was just shooting an aggressive dog. Only a few min of pain.
But then you have to ask, is there ever enough? They gave him the moment of realization as to his situation. He knew he wasn't walking out of that diner. And he didn't get to finish his meatloaf. He got his.

Kudos to Bacon for playing this role. Don't ever let it be said the guy doesn't take risks, and go 'there'.
