    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
    Aaron (Edward Norton) reveals the final twist in his case when he talks to Martin (Richard Gere) from his jail cell.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
    A high-profile slaying becomes the case of an ambitious attorney's career in this legal thriller based on the novel by William Diehl. Richard Gere stars as Martin Vail, a famed defense lawyer who volunteers his services to Aaron Stampler (Edward Norton), a Kentucky teenager charged with the murder of a Chicago archbishop. Covered with blood, Aaron was captured after a foot chase broadcast live on TV, making a gleeful Vail certain that he could raise his profile by defending the obviously guilty suspect. Assigned to prosecute is Assistant District Attorney Janet Venable (Laura Linney), who is Vail's ex-girlfriend. Vail's case becomes more complicated than he expected when a psychologist, Dr. Molly Arrington (Frances McDormand) concludes that Stampler suffers from multiple personality disorder. Vail also uncovers evidence that the archbishop was involved in a corrupt land scheme and may have molested young parishioners. Now the cynical, opportunistic attorney is faced with a daunting prospect, a client who may actually deserve his best defense. Its shocking, twist ending made Primal Fear (1996) a big box office hit and earned Norton, in his screen debut, an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

    Edward Norton said this is a rare case where being an unknown actor worked in the movie's favor.
    This was Norton's very first film. Nobody knew what he really acted or sounded like. So realizing at the end that all of it was an act made the audience (and the characters) feel extra gutted.
    He even said he purposefully put in the stutter (even though it was obviously fake) because people just naturally sympathize with someone who has a stutter.
    The villain's superpower is that he's a really good actor.

    A lot of people seem to think that Roy was the true personality, but i allways got the impression they were both acts. You had the s-s-s-stuttering Aaron, and the bully Roy. Bot Nortons true chacater is in this final scene. Not a bully or a pushover. Just a calculating malicious psycho.

    • @PinguKrueger
      @PinguKrueger 8 років тому +170

      +NickAndTommyFight It does feel a bit odd, i agree. It could even be an oversight But if Roy was the actual personality all along which a lot of pople seem to belive, then that would be even more unlikely that he would tolerate being treated like that. Aaron probably chose to be subjected to all that shit because in his mind being abused by the bishop was a better alternative then living on the streets. This way he at least got a way of acting out his sick desires in the end.

      twelve98 Movies are still good okay. If you think movies are bad take a look at a lineup of movies during 1996-2001. Movies like this were an exception, but for the most part, that was the dark age of cinema. You see allot better movies today than you did back than. Don't believe me? Ever see Drive? 12 Years A Slave? Schopdie New York? (hope I spelled that right) No Country For Old Men? I mean shit if these weren't great years for film than I don't know what great is anymore. Don't get me wrong, we do get our fair share of shit, like Micheal Bay's explosion fests, and some crappy "horror" and "parody" movies. But it was very common back then. We got movies like Space Jam, Twister, Independance Day, Godzilla, and many others that we're ether shit or below average.

    • @EhCanadianGamer
      @EhCanadianGamer 9 років тому +2

      ***** Since the release of Avatar? The advent of CGI was in 1996, the same year movies started going down the shitter. With CGI you can do anything, so instead of having good stories and characters. Will just do spectacular things we couldn't do before. The story isn't good, but hey that explosion looks awesome right? So it's no wonder movies between 1996 and 2001 were shit. CGI was a big thing before Avatar came around. So were way passed the dark ages. Sure some years are better than this one but c'mon are movies really that bad today?

    • @EhCanadianGamer
      @EhCanadianGamer 9 років тому

      ***** The fact that CGI wasn't as good back then as it is today is irrelevant. It was still heavily exploited back then. Also Guardians Of The Galaxy and Gravity were both good films. CGI doesn't make those films. You wanna know a film that heavily rely on CHI and nothing else? Anything made by Micheal Bay. At least with GOTG and Gravity you gave a shit with what's going on and only used CHI when necessary. If I didn't like the characters in GOTG, I wouldn't care if that battle at the end was cool, it would still suck. But the characters were likable. Gravity is kind've a poor example becuase how can you not use CGI where your movie is set in space? How else can you capture how empty and lonely such a place is? CGI isn't bad when it isn't being exploited or just used to save money. But c'mon compared to yester-years this is nothing. We have our Micheal Bays and whoever the fuck makes those shitty parodys. But overall for the most part we get good or average movies. Terrible and Great films are a rarity.

      @@NJFPV There are plenty of serial killers who had a completely normal upbringing. Ultimately they are unlucky to be born with the brain of a psychopath. Just like how a healthy person develops cancer in their 30s for example. We are all dealt a hand of cards in life. We didn’t pick our parents or how we were raised. The people we met and the genes we have. If an alligator killed 10 people we wouldn’t feel like it was responsible. It’s just how they are. I think it’s obvious that humans are exactly the same way but on a much more complicated level. Free will is a very powerful illusion that we feel we have. Decisions still have consequences but we aren’t in control of our actions. The same way you don’t feel in control of your heart beating right now is the same as the choices and thoughts being made by our brains.

      Damn you took those word's from my mouth. What Norton did in this movie is soo precious word's can't articulate. I had goosebumb's everytime he changed to Roy...and this scene is just like cherry to the top of the cake.

      @tomhulcelover 10 років тому +13

      dude are you serious? he knew that he wasn't going to have the spot light of the movie, anyone would, just by reading the script. it was even better because of Norton. Its not like Richard's career ended because of that

    • @NothingToPointOut24
      @NothingToPointOut24 10 років тому +1

      tomhulcelover That's not the point. The point is Ed Norton was an unknown at this time. Whether or not Gere knew that his role wasnt as great as the Aaron/Roy role doesnt matter. Not many actors , especially actors making their on-screen debut could've delivered the performance that Norton did.

    • @tomhulcelover
      @tomhulcelover 10 років тому +2

      irishwhip03 then i don't know why you made your original comment. this movie wasn't really supposed to be about richard's character

    • @NothingToPointOut24
      @NothingToPointOut24 10 років тому +1

      tomhulcelover So in your opinion any regular schmo could've matched Norton's performance? It doesn't matter if the character that Gere played wasn't the main focus of the film. Norton out shined everyone. That was my original comment. As good as everyone was, Norton was that much better and it didnt matter which role he played.

    "act-like-a-man"? Jesus, I knew exactly what you wanted from me. It was like we were dancing, Marty!"
    I feel like there is a hidden message. Marty always wanted to dance with the blonde.

But irony is he still have to that because of his job. You can’t categorize it as evil. One of the ultimate messages of this movie was even if you try to do the right thing evil can still come up with an innocent face and fool you.

    One of the best reveals in cinematic history, absolutely. That and the Sixth Sense are probably one and two. The reveal is one of the great plot devices in movies. A reveal is different, of course than something like Darth Vader "revealing" he's Luke's father. A reveal changes the very nature of what the movie was thought to be. The version of "The Thing" released a few years ago is actually a reveal movie. People weren't watching a remake, or new version of the classic John Carpenter's, "The Thing." It wasn't until the very end of the movie that they realized they were actually watching a prequel that ended exactly where Carpernter's began.

    • @SwiftFoxProductions
      @SwiftFoxProductions 2 роки тому

      @r33mote The Usual Suspects is a better example of a reveal than Se7en. The ending of Se7en is a great twist/surprise but, it isn't a reveal that makes you rethink/need to rewatch the entire movie over again. Psycho would be another classic reveal. A reveal is when you literally experience an entirely different movie after you've seen it through the first time.

    When Aaron's true personality came out he terrified me!! just the look on his face and his demenour was enough to scare me it was so powerful !
    You can literally see him become emotionless. Just amazing !!!
    And the look on richard's face is priceless!
    he's so devastated by this. And i also love the look on richard's face and his tone of voice when he goes back in the cell to confront Aaron/roy coz you can tell just by the look on his face that he already knows whats going on!
