This tough guy looks into the mirror and appears to become a frightened child again, if only for a second. But that changes quickly. The little smile says it all. His life's goal has just been presented to him. Brilliant scene
This scene is deep. That moment in the mirror when he smiles. I will never forget it. It blurs the concept of right and wrong. Of consequence. It’s like you see this character before this scene as someone else, someone dead, not there, lost to something. And then this, like a bulb being switched on, coming alive, that moment when you come out of water and take your first breath. He is alive again. And everything that happens from this point is life, beyond good and evil, his actions express truth.
At the mirror, his first look after the shock from the double take he did outside from seeing and interacting with a ghost that he’s probably surrogately seen or been reminded of every day for 13 years has now materialized, is anguish, and he winces. Next in his reflection, as MrReznor23 said, he sees/becomes the kid he once was, just for a moment, a kid that he kept a promise to avenge long ago, a kid he wishes he could’ve protected. He misses that kid, and wishes he could talk to him, to apologize to him or maybe warn him. He takes deep breaths and exhales in response to the gravity of the both the worst reminder of what he suffered and the opportunity that has presented itself. He has to close his eyes to dissociate and try to protect the memory of the kid from the killer he’s become. He smiles for a split second, knowing that he’s about to avenge the kid and finally have very slight relief from carrying the weight of that trauma for 13 years. This is the best scene in cinema of all time.
The part I used to wonder as a kid (when this film came out and I was like 14) was why didn't they go after Nokes sooner if they were these bad ass connected criminals? Now as a grown man, I know why.
@@flightofthebumblebee9529 And I don't understand that part. I saw the movie. Could the kids not tell anyone the abuse that was going on? I remember one of them did tell a guard who seemed nice. But as they talked and he told them what was happening, the guard said something about not wanting to mess up his pension plan and that if he (the guard) told someone, he might have to quit or something and take a chance in not getting his pension. Pretty disgusting reason to not report abuse, if you ask me!
What an amazing scene. Almost seems out of place in this movie, which was alright but not nearly as good as this part. I think this should have been the ending in a way.
I listen to this song all the time and it's because of this scene

Brilliant scene
brilliant observations I always thought the same exact thing and Ron elard is an exceptional actor, good movie 👍
good scene, not a great movie

Well said. A chance for retribution and redemption.
@@Chucky7286 I went poopy.
Incredible acting by Ron Eldard, underrated.
This whole scene was a powerhouse of emotion! Brilliant film and love this song!
inspired choice of music
Bad ass scene, from a bad ass movie. Most kids have zero idea anout Sleepers. Very good movie.
Idk if bad ass is the word I'd use to describe it. It's a very fucked up movie showing what happened to these kids. But good none the less
I firmly believe this was a true story.
@@flightofthebumblebee9529 It was based on a true story yes.
@@scp4849 Allegedly true. It was never proven.
In my opinion the best scene ever in a movie
He is like ''I found you'' It always ends up that way. Not right now....enjoy the rest of your meal! powerful.

That's an excellent analysis of one of the greatest movie scenes ever

Easy there kiddo, yes, this was a good film.... hell it was a great film, but let's not get carried away here
"Not right now...enjoy rest of your meal" As soon as he went to the restroom, Bacon should've ran.
He had no idea who they were.
He didn't even recognize him. That was the worst part. They were just something for him and his friends to play with.

Brilliant scene perfect song score
What's familiar about this scene is the same thing in death row your last meal before your time up.
This movie was so goddamn good
I wish itunes had Every Is Everything’s version of this song.

Couldn't agree more.
The film definitely peaks with this amazing scene. Even the part right after when they murder Nokes isn't as awesome as this buildup.
If it ended here then the other guards would not have gotten their own comeuppance.
@@donarthiazi2443 of course they could lol

Life is short, order the brisket, not the meatloaf!
My favorite part of the 🎥movie
kevin bacon shouldve been nominated for this one of the most underrated actors he was great here i hated him
Did that hurt Nokes?
