This is a tutorial showing you how to make a sound on a saxophone. Hope that you enjoy it.
Here is some recent feedback from people that I teach:
I like the diversity and focus. Lynden is a true professional and keeps the classes interesting with a mix of what I like doing and from his observations what areas I need to improve in. He makes classes fun and is an excellent teacher who I would recommend to anyone.
Lessons are great and I enjoy the class and always have. You always feel on a high after the class as you learn something new every lesson
Lynden makes the whole learning process fun and I leave every lesson smiling
I love everything about the lessons. It is hard to identify the specific elements but I guess most of all the relaxed atmosphere and Lynden's infinite patience
I have been learning alto sax with Lynden for a couple of years and I never thought I would make so much progress. Lessons are always relaxed, friendly and progressive. Lynden works at your pace and increases your skills and confidence without any pressure; before you know it you're playing to other people.
He is interested in your taste of music and tailors the lessons around that style. It keeps things interesting, and he can teach any style at a pace you feel comfortable.
I wish he was closer to my house. Although the 50 mile round trip I take for each lesson is worth it.
I didn’t own a saxophone 2 months ago and certainly had no musical knowledge. All I new was I loved the sound of a sax and now I had a little time on my hands I bit the bullet and bought one. I then needed to find a teacher who was patient, specialistzed in saxophone, and could put things in layman’s terms with a relaxed manor. I found one, Lynden. He’s very professional, if you need the best look no further.
The improvisation side of things is a struggle for me but using Lyndens techniques have made a massive difference to my ability albeit my own ability at this moment in time us somewhat limited but he takes that into account and gently leads you to perform to your best ability. His dedication and positivity makes it happen.
Thanks Lynden for your unending patience.
Lynden's enthusiasm for the instrument is contagious and every time I leave, no matter my mood when entering, changes to one of almost enlightenment. His positivity really is a blessing, should be bottled.
Always look forward to my lessons , and Lynden’s enthusiasm and positivity has kept me going through the times when I’ve thought that I’m making no progress.
Lynden makes things easy to understand and has a great way of explaining things.
Lynden is highly accomplished, knowledgable & practiced - regarding improvisation, music & jazz theory. He will be able to teach you how to play the sax & improvise.
Lynden’s lessons are always both challenging and enjoyable at the same time.
Lynden is a great teacher. Makes lessons fun and is led by what you want to learn. His lessons are fun and you don't feel under pressure.
it took 4 different videos before someone (you) mentioned tucking the bottom lip in, and i immediately got a sound. bless you!!!!!
kashasings awesome, thank you!
kashasings just to let you know that I’m available for zoom lessons and if that’s something you’d be up for then please let me know 🤝

Thank you dude you saved me from getting a f in band
Excellent! You're welcome!
I literally was struggling and thinking that my saxophone had an issue (since I got it from a pawn shop) but this made realize my mistake and be able to play the first notes on the Sax. Thanks man, great step by step tutorial
Thank you so much for your feedback and support and I’m glad that this was helpful for you. If your saxophone came from a pawnshop it might still need a check and adjust though so have a look in your local area and find someone who repairs saxophones. And please stay in touch and let me know how you’re getting on 😎😎🎷🎷🤝🤝
@@lyndenblades I went to my local store Sam Ash and they did repair it putting pads, and etc. I will bw checking your other videos to keep learning

That’s great, you’re welcome 😊
Yes, I was starting to think I was losing my mind haha. Can't believe this isn't in all the beginner tutorials on UA-cam.
😎😎🎷🎷🤝🤝
I love how, unlike some other videos, you actually told us WHY something we may be doing wrong is wrong instead of just telling us not to do it and we end up becoming confused. Great job!
Thank you very much for this!
thank you so much not just air is coming out. I'm actually played a note. you just saved my but from failing
You’re welcome! Happy to have helped 👍👍
I just got my first sax today, I watched some other videos about setup and producing first notes, but ended up trying for about an hour without any reed vibration coming through at all. I wasnt sure if it was set up improperly or if it was just me, but either way I knew I was obviously doing something very wrong. And now, thanks to your video, I just had my first success producing a proper sound of any kind whatsoever. This video helped a lot. Great explanation, and thank you very much!!!
Thank you 🙏
I'm in beginner alto saxophone in school band and this really helps! I felt stupid searching this up on UA-cam but it really helped! Thank you! 👍
You’re welcome 🤝🤝🎷🎷
I bought a Nuvo Dood instrument (plastic clarinet for practice) years ago and could not make any sound from it other than loud squeek when I blow it hard.
I gave up trying and put the instrument in the storage and forgot about it.
Recently I started a recorder channel and remembered the instrument and thought it would be great to feature the instrument in my channel
I watched some tutorial videos but still can't make any good notes.
Then in your video you mentioned that we need to put pressure to the reed by our lower lips. Now I'm starting making good notes. Thanks!
You’re welcome 😊
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY !!!!!! I got my first soooooooooooooooooound 🤗🤗🤗 sounded hoooorible but i loved it alright 😂
Can't wait to play my first tune !
Couldn't get without your push the bottom lip tip ! Thanks Blades !! 🤩🤩🤩👌👌👌

Thank you so much,I just joined band without knowing how to do anything on my sax, keep up the good work!
Happy to help!
Thank you for your help! I finally got more than just air lol. I’m a percussionist trying something new so... still some work to do. But you helped me get started!

Still can't do it. Nothing but air is coming out.I feel so lost
michael odetola If you can, find a teacher to help you. Learning from video's is great, but a real life teacher makes all the difference.
You're right. I'am trying everything I can.
I just wanted to ask, is the sound produced by the air vibrating the reed?
michael odetola that's right, I believe so.
I solved the issue. My bottom lip was not tucked in
michael odetola awesome! Enjoy
Watched a few videos and this was the ONE!!! thank you Lyden
You’re welcome, thank you for commenting 🙏🤝🎷

I don’t understand how to tuck in my bottom lip, I’m doing it but then it makes little to no difference, I’m just make the high peaking note every time
Same here... just can't
Keep trying though!
You can!
This video really disturbs my cats!!! LOL I have become a fan of yours as I am extremely new to learning the saxophone and am a septuagenarian, but a very patient one!! Have never played a woodwind, but want to. You appear to be a very patient man!!! LOL
Well I am a cat devotee so I hope they’re OK! Thank you for following my videos. I offer online lessons via Zoom so if that’s something you’re interested in then please let me know 👍🤝🎷 🐈
Wow thank you so much for this, somehow you made it make sense! Legend!
DaisyTwitch White thank you!! Really pleased that it helped you 🤝👍🎷🙏😎
I don't get a tone right away. Takes a few tries. Whenever my dog hears the air blowing, she takes off...when she doesn't bolt, I know we are having a good a day.
I started playing guitar as a teen..Picked it back up again.
Took WEEKS to get a decent chord without fingertip pain. So, i don't know about this "guitar is easy" claim. lol
That short note reminded me of "I put a spell on you" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins, 1956.
Thanks for this!
Thank you so much for this! I was making a great sound before the video was over.
You’re welcome, very glad that you found this useful 🤝🤝
I did it, yay!
Yay!!

Thank u so much that helped a lot
You’re welcome ☺️
With the greatest respect and admiration for your proficiency, has it ever occurred to you that the saxophone is possibily the only musical instrument that could cause injury to the player while itself being damaged to a negligible extent. Human teeth are not designed nor are they intended to be subjected to long periods of vibration nor yet are they designed to be subjected to extended periods of upward pressure. Teeth are meant exclusively for eating and the front teeth for biting off large chunks of food into smaller bits to be masticated by the grinders at the back of the mouth. Originally the embouchure was relatively harmless after the lips adjusted to the pressures required to support the reed. Then came the urge to render the saxophone as projecting as the brass section and thus came into being the unnatural teeth on top embouchure with teeth marks appearing on the mouthpiece in the mid thirties. In my more than fifty years of refurbishing of woodwinds I have seem countless sax mouthpieces either bitten through or pretty much through but not one single clarinet mouthpiece. There are of course undeniable positive points attached to the teeth on top technique but the recent Ennison double lip promises to hold its own against the blasters and honkers, enabling players to revert to the original saxophone sound so beloved by the inventor and Berlioz and genuine aficionados.
Thanks for your interesting and informative feedback!
@@lyndenblades Thank you for your reply. I thought it appropriate to seek clarification of the Bergonzi No Embouchure from a professional such as you , the subject of your video being about the embouchure. I have not been able to find any sort of elucidation of this type embouchure. Others have expressed their opinion as to just what Berbonzi meant by his description. The embouchure has been compared to the use and holding of an ordinary drinking straw. The straw is held exclusively by the lips and the teeth have absolutely nothing to do with it. Should you have your own opinions or thoughts on the Bergonzi embouchure I would for sure appreciate being informed. Thank you.
@@vivianastridge2167 Hi Vivian, thanks for this. You are way more knowledgeable about this than I am I’m afraid, I haven’t ever really given it much consideration. My embouchure has been the same since I started playing the sax, I was first introduced to the sax and instructed by a full time professional gigging sax player that I met in Thailand while I was backpacking with my girlfriend and he was kind enough to give me some free lessons. This is how he instructed me and I’ve used the same approach since then, and as it has worked for me and no other player or instructor that I’ve ever known has mentioned not having your teeth on the top, it’s not something that I have taken into consideration until you brought it to my attention now.
Personally I like to keep an open mind and realise that everyone is different and that approaches that are different to mine are interesting. I’m not so bothered about being “right” but instead I focus on what is useful or not useful to myself and others.
I teach this method as it’s useful to me and it works and until now wasn’t aware that there may be an alternative. Also my teeth do not seem to have suffered very much in the 30 years or so that I’ve been playing, but that’s not to say that it couldn’t happen. You’re absolutely right about bite marks on both my tenor and alto mouthpieces though, I have to replace them every ten to fifteen years because the indentations left by my teeth become too deep.
I think your comments are absolutely fascinating and thank you for the education!!
@@lyndenblades I feel honored that you should continue to correspond on the subject of the all important embouchure. I am not particularly in favor of the double lip or teeth on top mode as I am equally at ease on either. I am not any sort of expert or specialist on embouchure matters. It is just that I am intensely interested in all aspects of the saxophone and playing techniques.I have written a paper on the embouchure, its history, modes, relative advantages and disadvantages and as many aspects of this most important element as I could think of. I have also written a paper on the mouthpiece, its original form ,modifications, effects of the various aspects of design on tone, ease of play, subtoning etc etc and method of manufacture using nothing but hand tools. A clarinetist Colin MacEke of England has used my technique in making mouthpieces and his efforts may be viewed in two videos he has produced titled “Making a clarinet mouthpiece the Vivian Astridge way”. Despite my consuming interest in woodwinds and especially the saxophone, I have not been able to produce the jazz subtone using the double lip embouchure which seems especially suited for the teeth on top mode though I have mastered the classical form. I have been able to contact just one single double lip subtoner who is able to produce the most exquisitely beauteous subtone though not completely of the jazz type. He has a few videos on Yotube and the name is Quamon Fowler. His instructions on subtone production sadly cannot be followed as not many have been blessed with the super abundance of lips as has this virtuoso . A somewhat interesting or intriguing fact I have come across in my research is that lady saxophonist cannot subtone or have not the slightest interest in this effect.
I wish you the very best in all things, Sir
@@vivianastridge2167 Fascinating! Thank you Vivian and all the very best to you too 🤝🤝🎷🎷
Lynden Thanks for this information . How do you feel about plastic reeds? I use Legere 2.5. The tone I am getting does not sound great. I realize that blaming it on the Equiptment and not the operator. I do spend a lot of time on long tones Thanks Greg Baker
Hi Greg, thanks for your message.
Lots of great players use synthetic reeds, however personally I can’t get a sound I like using them. I think they’re a terrific idea but I never personally liked using them 🤝🤝🎷🎷😎😎
I am trying to learn how to play the sax at home. I was giving a brand new one so I really want to learn it. I played the flute all throughout middle and high school. I'm 29 now and I am trying to learn something new. But I am having such a hard time man.....
Sorry to hear you’re having a hard time! A good teacher will definitely make it easier for you. I offer Zoom lessons and there’s loads of teachers out there, so I would definitely consider getting some tuition if I were you.

Tanta Ó Comhghain give it some time and with regular practice your sound will develop and become less harsh sounding.
I remember doing this haha
Thank you!
I'm a little confused, in one of your videos, you mentioned about not putting your lip over your teeth. And to be honest I never have. So am I doing it wrong ? I found I get a better tone if I don't curl my lip over mt teeth.
THE SMOKEY DRAGON that’s fine, go with whatever gives you the best tone 👍👍
I’ll update when I make a sound 😂
You will! Keep trying 🤝🎷

Keep trying!
I can kinda make a tune with tenor but I constantly hear a faint blowing noise and still need help. Thank you for this though! Also I'm wondering what the song is for the intro.
You probably need to tighten your lips around the mouthpiece to stop the blowing noise. The music at the start of the clip is just me improvising over a chord on Session Band
