Hi I'm 73 and played clarinet back in junior high. Well I decided to buy sorpano just to have some fun¡! I'm getting some sound out of this thang... I think I'll continue having Fun!!
Am now 38. I played piano from a young age until i was almost 18 with lessons from the age of around 8, started with a small keyboard at 3-4 yrs old and went from there. Eventually studied my way to ABRSM grade 5. Then life got in the way. A year or so ago i got it tuned and am getting back into it again, so much is flooding back so quickly. Yesterday to add to my journey, i took delivery of an Alto i bought from Gear4music. Was having a try after work last night and lets just say is going to take a while to get used to what I'm doing (is the first woodwind ive ever tried lol) mostly my embouchure is going to take a while to develop. Im going to have to get some lighter reeds, only have a 2.5 that came along in the packaging atm, and lets say im a bit like a squeaky goose atm 😂😂
Thanks man! I've been playing the sax for a few years but shortly after I switched to the tenor I realized that I was actually biting into my lower lip. This obviously lead to my lip feeling quite sore after practice. I went online and checked a few videos on saxophone embouchure and I have to say that your video probably had the most useful tips to change the way I play. Now it's just a matter of practice in order to "unlearn" the way I played before. Once again, thank you!
Hi Jamie, After having played clarinet for years, I recently (very recently: 5 days ago) buyed me a tenor sax. I've always loved the sound of the saxophone (and more particular the tenor), but for long I didn't have the time nor the means to spent on a horn. But now I'm retired I finaly could follow my heart. Since a couple of weeks I'm following your UA-cam channel and the lessons I learned before buying me a sax did put me on the right track immediately when I started blowing the big horn for the first time (and a tenor is BIG compared to a clarinet). So what I took from your lessons when I started on the sax is: 1. Forget the clarinet embouchure. 2. Breath deep: you need a lot of air. 3. The low notes are difficult, everybody has struggled with them initially, so don't get discouraged. And with regard to point 2: I found out that the notes come out better when I play standing up instead of sitting down. Well, that's my story so far. I just want to give you a BIG thumbs up for putting me on the right track right from the start. Regard, Gerard

Amazing. All the other resources I found (including one I paid for) talk about placing your bottom lip over your teeth as a cushion. @@phasey4634 very good, I still struggle with consistent articulation of some of the low notes, that’s my biggest issue, but I haven’t been practicing as much as I should be. It’s going well!
@@ctk3316 oh I see. I started playing sax today. I had trouble with tonguing, but this video kinda gave me the idea of it. Also, the sax keys are kinda similar to the flute. So I shouldn’t have any bad trouble for the notes.
I just picked up the alto saxophone and been watching your videos. I appreciate all the information your videos provide. My mine focus has been praying my embouchure with just the mouthpiece and neck. Another instructor recommended downloading a tuner that reads what note your on. It says G or G# is there a certain note you should practice on while or acting your embouchure? I also been trying to keep the line steady.
My daughter is 12 years and we used this video which was really a great help to get the blowing technique. But she is still struggling with the first initial note , it sounds very breathy and high. Only after that does it sound like it should. I know she literally only got the sax yesterday but she needs to get up to speed fast as she is part of a school band. Do you have any tips for us please
I used to be able to field everyone’s Qs at length in the early days, but now I’m only able to answer questions like this directly inside my Inner Circle Membership as many of these issues are somewhat involved. The membership is awesome, so maybe consider joining?! www.getyoursaxtogether.com/innercircle (full disclosure, this is a pasted comment, sorry 😉. Although…I pasted it myself 🤣)
Great tutorial. Just started playing tenor to compliment my clarinet which I am fairly accomplished; bottom lip folds over teeth on clarinet which is different for sax
Question: I’ve listened to several “Smooth Jazz” sax artists, and while they all have their own sound, one of them …. Grover Washington Jr ….. has a very unique style that sounds like (on some songs at least) he is playing the notes just a tad ahead or behind the beat. At any rate, for me it is his “signature sound”.
Thanks boss, you are a great Guru. It’s my 2nd day to hold a sax in hand and I came across your channel. Now feeling very confident 😍 …best wishes from India 💐
Man I’ve always been musically huge into jazz and blues, Miles Davis, Coltrain, Parker. Funny thing is didn’t know them when I was a little kid but I still got exposed to sax and my journey started, HOW I got exposed to sax is funny…it was Zoot from the muppets I first saw and heard the sax. From there then I fell in love with the music played on the Charlie Brown cartoons and movies, funny thing is instead of playing the sax all this time I’ve been a lead guitar for over 20 years. But the sax is calling stronger than ever, dunno if it’s my growing older age or what but I wanna relax and be like Zoot now 🤣 so I’m gonna go for it and learn a new instrument and it’ll be the sax.

Glad you’re bingeing my content! Make sure you check out this current free series! www.getyoursaxtogether.com/tone

Great video! I discovered I had too much pressure on my alto where I wasn’t getting the F # , actually I was hitting A# !
Wow. Ok!
One of the best I heared , too bad that we do not live in the same country, I'd very much like to be your student, you have so much knowledge, experience and patience to explain anything and everything that it is amazing.
Thanks so much. 👍🏻
You are amazing!! I couldn’t get any sound out of my instrument and none of the other videos I found really worked but now I can play almost any note! Thank u so very much!

i just got my sax a couple days ago for my birthday and this is really gonna help me
Happy Birthday! Enjoy!
Extremely fantastic video! I’ve been biting for years and years. I good friend told me my bottom lip should be relaxed and sides tight. This is the only video I’ve seen that properly explained this 😉🙌🏽 thanks so much!
Glad it helped!
woah thanks. my band teacher had never taught me this. and would always shame me for it. thank you so muxh
Anytime. You’re very welcome.
Thank you this video helped my son.
Glad it helped
I just started and you helped me out a lot
Great! Glad to help
This video was super helpful! When you were talking about keeping your throat open (which I wasn’t doing) it reminded me of how my chorus teacher says to pretend there is a bee in the back of your mouth and if you don’t give it enough space it’ll sting you
🐝
Hi Jamie , I’m 57 just bought my first sax so I’m watching everything you say like a hawk dude ! I can hardly get a squeak out of it yet but it only tuned up yesterday so onwards and upwards huh . Thanks for all the advice I didn’t know about mouth pads or as a novice the size of read I need so I’ve already learned and bunch , I’ll let you know how I get on 🤞 subscribed 👍
Wicked man. Good luck!!
I always wanted to learn how to play the saxophone. I was named after the jazz saxophonist Najee , because my father wanted me to become a musician. I actually play 12 with violin/viola being my principle instruments . I always wanted to learn the saxophone, mainly the soprano
Cool man! I actually named my son after the sax giant Sonny Rollins. Good luck with your sax playing, if you've even started that is! Let me know if there's anything I can do for you. J:-)
Get Your Sax Together I didn’t start yet , but I’m ordering a very beginner saxophone off amazon. it’s only a couple hundred bucks LOL I figured I would start there
@@GetYourSaxTogether OMG! I named my boy Sonny also after Rollins. Thought I was the only one.

Thanks, from and old broad who is hoping to begin playing. This is something I wish to develop first. Has a cuppa one me! Shout out from the USA
As the adage goes: The older the fiddle, the sweeter the tune! 😉 Thanks!
You re making a wonderfull Job. Regards from Brazil.
samuel guimaraes - thanks very much! 🙏🏻
Think the redfish mouth was the best advice I had from the beginning !
😅
Loved the tank reference
🤣
This really helped me
Great! Thanks for watching. J:-)
Thank you this was very helpful
You’re welcome!
i'm almost a year on alto and I'm 95% self-taught, I started struggling with higher level music than what I'm used to (I'm switching from flute in my school's band) and I was struggling to reach high notes so I decided to look at some videos on embouchures, I know that's not 100% the problem but in watching this video, i found out that for the last year, I've been using the wrong embouchure and nobody ever corrected me, so thank you for making this video :]
I'm glad it was helpful. Enjoy your music.
Trying to learn sax for jazz band, gonna pick it up after area auditions, after state if I make it (I play clarinet) you’re videos have been very helpful, and I’ll continue watching as I’m learning!
Cool. Good luck!
How’s it going now? I’m doing the same thing
Don’t worry about that too much at this point. Just aim for that big loose sound!
I am french and I discover your channel ! Good job I started thé saxo one week ago 🙄
Welcome!
Thanks for that. Really good information! 😎
You're welcome!
I have been learning trumpet for a while. And im going to be learning alto sax tomorrow as a temporary instrument until i go to bari sax in february

Created my first SAX tone!! Thank you so much :D

Awesome!
Thank you for this!
Glad it was helpful!
Picked up my sax as beginner first time in 6 months bloody hard but couldn’t get high notes but I want to learn x
Keep at it!
Great tutorial. Just started playing tenor to compliment my clarinet which I am fairly accomplished; bottom lip folds over teeth on clarinet which is different for sax
👍
thanks for the lesson, Very useful
LatestVideoUploads - thanks, glad you enjoyed it. 👍🏻
7:04 Like Van der Graaf Generator legendary sax player David Jackson (aka Jaxon), who used to play both alto and tenor simultaneously on stage....
Interesting!
I play clarinet and am learning sax 😊
Great!
Thanks! That was very helpful
Thanks. Glad to be of service. Thanks for watching and let me know if there's anything else I can do for you. J:-)
I have a Barry. It feels like there’s a lot more tutorials for alto and tenor than there is for learning barry
Likely corresponding with the number of players on each horn type. Thanks for tuning in 🙏
Question: I’ve listened to several “Smooth Jazz” sax artists, and while they all have their own sound, one of them …. Grover Washington Jr ….. has a very unique style that sounds like (on some songs at least) he is playing the notes just a tad ahead or behind the beat. At any rate, for me it is his “signature sound”.
👍
Thanks boss, you are a great Guru.
It’s my 2nd day to hold a sax in hand and I came across your channel. Now feeling very confident 😍 …best wishes from India 💐
Thanks and welcome to the saxophone world!

Wow. Awesome!
I know it was uploaded 3 years ago but today in 2022 this is still helping thank you!
Glad its helpful!
