Agreed, I think the sharper more pronounced tone from using a pick actually sounds really good. Both styles of playing suit different needs depending on the song but I definitely dig the sound of a bass player who picks. As long as you don’t play like Fields then it’s all good either way.
@@aroundthefur1210 Using a thick pick like the dunlop stubby 3mm or a black ice 1.5mm on an active bass has given me some of the best possible tones. @@BassPlayer9000 depends what you are playing. metal and punk sounds great with a pick. but jazz? blues? fingerstyle sounds a lot better than a pick in those styles
Bass player speaking. Congratulations, this is the most accurate display of a badd player's style. Especially in beginners, slapping never works, and we treat picks like a sin. 👏
Pick bass sounds better than fingerstyle, plus one of my favorite bands of all time Joy Division requires pick bass or else some of the songs will be a lot harder to do or downright impossible. Disorder wouldn't be the same without a pick.
@@waycnf7229 I disagree, using a pick does give it a different sound, but I wouldn't say it sounds better. It just depends on what you're playing. Some songs that were made using a pick, so obviously it'll sound different when played with fingerstyle, and might be harder to play without one as well. Its not always impossible though.
Paul McCartney, Mike Dirnt, Lemmy, Roger Waters, Krist Novoselic, Chris Squire, Matt Freeman, Gene Simmons, Duff McKagan, Justin Chancellor, Roger Glover, Carol Kaye, David Ellefson, Kim Gordon, Kim Deal, and Scott Pilgrim would like to come to your house tonight for a chat.
.. Carol f'king Kaye! IMO one of the most iconic bassists of all time, taught Gene Simmons to pick properly in both directions. Blew his mind. The footage is on UA-cam somewhere.. but not sure why all these commenters only want one sound. Seems lame to me. My Hofner's got flats and needs a pick for attack. The Ibanez is great with both, and I can't use a pick on the U-bass. Explore, my dudes.
Good list, to which I'd also add Simon Gallup of The Cure. And while this next one had the misfortune of trying to replace Cliff Burton and get no respect from Hetfield/Ulrich, Jason Newstead is also a decent player who uses a pick.

I am an amateur bassist with little to no skills. However, I have timing and I am willing to spend some time looking for things I miss in the songs I listen to. I find flaws, bad or good tones and little things that I like. So, I figured out that each type of playing, picking, fingering, tapping and slapping give their own little thing in a song and are very hard to replace with another technique. For example the percussive sound slap has is unique to that specific technique, tapping has a very unique sound when because of quick change of the notes with each tap, picking has this grunge sound when you pluck the string from the dragging/scratching the pick does to the string, a great example is at the 2:25 of the song Algae by Ignea, that sound is slowly becoming more and more apparent until the chorus and finally, fingering has little to no unique sound when plucking a string making it the best technique if you want just its sound alone. TL;DR: Fingering, picking, tapping and slapping techiniques each has a different sound and are used for that reason in specific cases at each song. There is no superior or inferior technique. That is bs.
Hey dude, all of gotta say is you basically got a really good understanding of each technique. Since you are new, I would suggest just playing with fingers, try out using picks, and once you’ve got some experience try out tapping and slapping. All it gotta say is rock on dude. It took me around 3 - 4 months of bass to really click with the instrument, but at the same time I had experience with other instruments. Just take it at you’re own pase and you’ll own it!
Personally, as a guitarist (that mostly plays a standard six-string electric, and sometimes bass), I hate picks with the bottom of my heart. They are consumable, get stuck in places they shouldn't (like under furniture or inside acoustic/classical guitars), tend to go flying while strumming aggressively, etc... I only use them for songs that rely mostly on tremolo picking (something like Miserlou, for example). This, and the fact that I suck at flatpicking.
As a bass player, this is most accurate. Bricks are proven to be related to guitar players, so a bassist obliterating one with a sledge hammer perfectly reflects real life.
True dat. But we also have the two options as guitar players as well. On bass guitar I’ll really only use a pick if my fingers have gotten tired of plucking
