Husqvarna 365 Special to 372xpw Conversion & Husqvarna 372xp OE vs. 372 X-Torq. Whats Different?

  • A perfectly good Husqvarna 365 Special ( 2004 closed port 48mm version ) gets torn apart and built into a Husqvarna 372XPW 75cc saw. It really doesn't matter which version of that saw you start with, Husqvarna 362.365,372XP, AND the X-torq variants. The process is essentially the same. Also Jonsered variants such as the 2165,2171,2166,2172same deal.
    All the Husqvarns OEM parts came from Ashokan Turf & Timber

    When doing a rebuild with a big bore or a bigger piston then say the 48mm to a 50 or 51 or 52 the best thing to do to get that specific crankshaft to live is weigh the OEM the original piston that was ran on that crankshaft the first time it was in a saw. So say that piston was a 48mm piston and it weighed roughly .065kg and the new piston you are using that is let's say a big bore to that specific crankshaft and you use a 50mm piston and say it weighs .069kg the best thing to do is take material from the bigger piston the new piston and get it down to your desired .065 weight. "Note if you are going from a single ring piston to a dual ring piston you have to take .002-.004kg off the piston in order for your weight to be close. Just a helpful tip to everyone 😎

    I found a 365 special in great condition like this one that has a 372 top end for sale the other day. He wants $400. Seems like a pretty good deal. I don't really need it but I kinda want it. I did just buy a Makita DCS6421 last week for $250.

      Yes, you can pretty much mix and match all top end parts from the Original edition series, the only exception is the early "square" port 365's with the open port cylinders. Chances of you running into one of those is pretty slim. But even with them, u can put on the new cylinder and carb with either the high top or low top filter/covers

    I know it's a few year after but I have a question for u watched many of ur videos all the way from new Zealand very impressed with ur work . I have a 365sp it runs good starts after 4 to 5 pulls cold . But the compression comes out as 125psi cold . I have had the muffler off and piston looks great no scoring what so ever .am I missing something or is it just an old saw that needs a new ring . I have and old husqvarna 55 that feels like it has more compression under pull start than the 365sp any tips ? Many thanks

    That was cool. At the end when you were setting idle rpm there was no smoke at all with a 32:1 mix. I've been running a 50:1 mix forever and would have thought for sure your mix would have smoked. Well I guess I am wrong. Last saw I had with a 32:1 mix was an old homlite 360. Sometime if you have a chance in a vid could explain your thoughts on the pros and cons of altering the ratio. Nice vid.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  9 років тому +6

      +Steve Rob 32:1 ..Guess there are a few reasons, some logical and some not. I've used 32:1 on the later/better 2 stroke oils since they have formulated them in such a way as to NOT leave that black sticky goo in the exhaust. The first synthetic I used at 32:1 was BelRay H1R. The MC1, their first offering didn't burn clean enough to run that type od ratio. I ran it 40:1 and even then it left residue in the race bikes. That was a problem with the early synthetics..So reason one is when I raced motocross, it was generally accepted practice to push for those heavier ratios. The motors lasted longer and made more power. Especially at the end of races. At first we though it was because of lubricity... but later we learned that oil actually has more latent heat per unit volume burned...more energy therefore more "pop" and power. OF course there is a point of diminishing returns if there was SO much oil, the mixture couldn't burn. We also found that the motors actually initially ran a little hotter with the heavier oil ratios... counter intuitive. AND over the years when I tore down motors...it's pretty consistent that the ones with 32:1 and similar ratios had a "film" of oil in the cases and hard parts while those with 50:1 were usually dry. I liked that wet oily film on tear down .. can't say for certain it made a difference in wear, although I suspect it did.So I carried that "habit" over to my saws. And see that same oil film... So I continue. Using a non-ethanol gas and 32:1 now using the Husqvarna XP synthetic. AND when I have worked on the variety of saws...that wet & dry trend relative to ratios is consistent as it was with the race bikes.So haven't seen a reason to change and actually have seen reasons to remain as I do with 32:1

    Enjoy your videos. I am considering a top end upgrade for my allmost 20 year old 365 similiar to your cyclops saw. I bought the 365 originally because it had decent power and important to me very low vibration levels which husky at one time used to advertise. What are your thoughts and comparisons with regards to before and after the mod for vibration levels? Should I consider a 50mm versus the 52mm?

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  7 років тому +1

      Just a OEM 50mm is a great saw. The top end I used was the 51.5mm "XPW" and it has a bit more grunt than the 50.. The actual cost difference isn't enough to matter. For a general all around saw the OEM 50mm it hard to beat. For hard wood and a longer bar, the XPW is probably a better choice price being equal.

      Original 371's had one ring, thats fine. tend to pick up RPM's a little quicker...although most wouldn't notice. 2 rings do seal better I guess. For most the one ring solution is fine.

    • @afleetcommand

      Everything is the same around the crank from 362-365-372. Same crank, same bearings, same seals. Really those OEM cranks have been reliable, so unless the plan is to spin them faster, I don't see a need to work them away from OEM stock. Good stuff.

      Work it to where the throttle is a closed as possible in conjunction with the low speed. And since that's a rather low tolerance set of parts that again varies from saw to saw. If I'm struggling with a saw, I pull the cover and wind it in until I see it just open the throttle a bit. Then work from there.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  5 років тому +1

      First I think I did define the difference between the 2010 and later "X-torq" variants. and BOTH the later 365 and 372 have 50mm X-torq cylinders. The difference is about the transfer port caps. Then the "Original Edition" version of the 365/372 were both radically different that the later X-torq, but also were different from each other. The 365 "Special" had a 48mm cylinder with smaller transfers as well to pull the Power Band to a lower RPM. The 372xp Origional Edition had a 50mm cylinder and had a no -load tuning RPM at 13500, which is also 1000 RPM more than the 365 SE and 200 more than the X-torq 372's.

      Nah....the step from the larger squeezed down boot (a 390 boot or intake pipe) has this step that does nothing but create turbulence. Along with the lower air speed across the jets because the large bore makes it finicky...unless a lot of down stream mods have been done. I hear it all the time.

      +Mark Me On those saws, I shoot for 185lbs. Thats enough for a reliable work saw. Getting a stock 365 or 372 cylinder in the .020 squish rangge gets youin that PSI ball park. Open is those that have "grooves" or "slots' right in the side of the cylinder open to the piston. Closed is those with passages from the crank case up to where they open into the combustion chamber...look at that last "open port" 345 to 350 build for pics.

      The three things you need are as follows:372xp filter holder372xp air filter372xp top cover.Best place is your local Husqvarna dealer. he may ask why.....:)Also camp out on eBay sometimes that stuff shows up for less. In fact since you really don't need them, just wait for a good deal to appear online.Also I'm certain you realize the ONLY other difference between you 365 and a 372 is the transfer port covers on the side of the cylinder. The 365 has a divider, looks like a fin on the inside of that over. Some die grinder or dremel tool work to grind that out makes that saw a 372.

      Guess anything is possible, 272's were 52mm and 670's were 50mm. Also the Cylinders pulsed the carbs differently so while it something that can be done, takes being a little clever to blend a 272 top end to a 670. A 670 is about as strong as the 272 even though it had a smaller bore. BTW we call those 670/272 blends "672's", Bob has one he runs frequently

    Good morning, is the air filter conversion a must? Was thinking of doing this conversion but I’d like to keep the factory air filter cover. Thanks!

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  5 років тому +2

      Filter conversion isn't a requirement and actually for me I prefer the low top. But the conditions around here don't require the additional filtration. Not a lot of sand or dusty conditions here

    • @orangeshaw2370
      @orangeshaw2370 4 роки тому

      It's a preference:
      Option 1 Low profile filter cover.
      Makes for easy pulling through the stubs/branches as it doesn't snag as easily as the square high profile cover.
      Option 2 High profile filter cover.
      Air slows down as it gets filtered, the 365xp and 372xp air is filtered centrifugally, thus excludes the fine dust (in my opinion) more effectively.

    Great vid. I have a question about ratios. do you think that a ratio of 40:1 of the red stihl sinthetic oil is good enough or is the more is better the case?

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  8 років тому +2

      +Tibor Keresztes (kiskeri) One of those discussions that never ends. 40:1 with a synthetic is fine. I actually run 32:1 with a good synthetic on all my two strokes. Lots of reasons why and way to many to shorten into a simple response. 50:1 is "adequate" as proven by the manufacturers recommendations. But the simple answer is 40:1 is a good ratio. I wouldn't use more than 32:1 as there is a point of diminishing returns.. :)

      Got some video's on the 55 and 350 to get more power. Actually both respond to compression increase. Not much u can do with a 455 other than feed it more fuel and possibly a muffler mod. Hard to increase compression on those clam shell designs without machine shop capability.

    Anyone know if this will work on a 1998 vintage Jonsered 2065? My limited research tells me it's the same saw as a Husky 365. I'm thinking it will work but not sure about the top case / plastics. I don't care if the colors don't match as long as everything fits and works nice. Also if anyone has a list of the part numbers used here that would be a huge help. Looking forward to really tearing into a saw for the first time.

    I have a 365 special which I bought brand new back in 03 or 04 I believe put a lot of hours on the saw when I go to start it it will fire right up but when I go to give it throttle it just bogs out I now use a 372xp x torque so my 365 special he's just sitting no bar just a powerhead I'd like to get it back running right just as a backup I love that saw and the power to weight ratio is excellent I know it's hard to tell by not looking into it but what would your thoughts be on what is the issue with it

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  6 років тому +1

      Put new case seals in and a new OEM 372xp top end and you will never want to use the XP - X-torq again...:) That is exactly what I did there is put an xpw top end on a clean 365 special bottom end. Lighter, smoother, and a lot more power than the X-torq.

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  6 років тому

      The issue likely is the fuel line. OR carb. If its been sitting, especially with E10 fuel, there will be a white deposit in the carb that you really can't clean out. So add a new carb & boot to the top end and seals..

    Nice video of conversion. I have a 365 special which am happy with the amount of power and reliability. My question i have is about balancing. The 372 piston has significantly more weight, and the crankshaft/flywheel would be balanced for the standard 48mm piston. Do you think the saw vibrates more now than in stock configuration?

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  9 років тому +2

      +Al Langaman Not really...and it is the same crank BTW. One project that is "In Process" is tweaking a 48mm 365 to match a stock 372..:)

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  7 років тому +1

      Travis is correct as it will flex the mounting bracket breaking the seal. Actually a common issue on those.

    • @kurgan322
      @kurgan322 7 років тому

      Ok, it had me curious. I just replaced the carb on my old 365, and am notorious for over tightening things. The saw runs great for a right good while, but later begins to die. I can keep it running by finessing the choke (or let it set a while), then it clears up. I think this is what some people call "going lean in the cut"?

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  7 років тому +1

    • @kurgan322
      @kurgan322 7 років тому

      But then i'd have an excuse to go all big bore cyclops on it ;-) So you think the boot seal may be this issue, and not something with the impulse tube? I could've sworn I replaced that boot, but cannot find evidence that I ever bought one. I remember the old one looked good. Maybe I should replace it anyway, and check the pulse tube while i'm back in there. Thanks for the advice, and the great videos!

    • @afleetcommand

      Cases are the same so if you have the right filter holder it should fit with the hi top plastic. Don't thing the different tank/handle and handle & chain brake guard would interfere. Never went that direction .. I always go to the low top configuration.

      Fake oEM = other Equipment Manufacturer.
      Many just in time Manufacturers outsource their parts.
      The fakes are those that geared themselves up for, but didn't get the tender.
      Truth be told, sell them to the public in any case to defray expenses (or may even be a better product) in the beginning,
      but because it's lucrative, may Not stop.

      No but the 365 did. And that was on the same platform. SO it's possible some one might wrap 372 things on an old 365 chassis. The 365's went to the same intake as the 372's over time and with the x-torqs even the same carb and cylinder,

      Depends on what the squish measurement is. Id with a gasket it is in the .040inch range removing the base gasket brings you to approx. .020inch, that is a good number. Anything less than .018inch squish is not good. ( Squish = distance at top dead center from piston crown to squish band in the combustion chamber )

    • @afleetcommand
      @afleetcommand  4 роки тому

      Tergantung pada apa ukuran squish itu. Id dengan paking ada di kisaran 1,016 mm melepas paking dasar membawa Anda ke sekitar. 0,508 mm, itu angka yang bagus. Apa pun yang kurang dari 0,457 mm squish tidak baik. (Squish = jarak di tengah mati atas dari mahkota piston ke squish band di ruang bakar)

    • @afleetcommand

      yup. everything is identical on both saws with the exception of the caps over the transfer ports. The 2166 has a divider cast into that cap and the 2172 doesn't. That's it. Either get a used 2172/372 cylinder or better yet take off those caps and grind out those dividers. Same piston, crank, cylinder casting (just the caps different), carb intake cases everything
