I find masking tape works best if I first just put the tape on my shirt. This allows the tape to pick up a small amount of lint. The tape then will come off your paper without doing any damage to your paper yet still produce a nice border. When removing the tape just pull off at a sharp angle away from the painting not straight up from the painting. Works for me I have never found the need to buy Artists tape from the art store.
I use washi because it comes in better variety of thicknesses and there's always prints or colors no one wants. I do the sane technique for removal, except instead of pulling so tape doubles back on itself, i pull to side of paper awat from center, thst way if any paper is ripped you avoid catching it near that perfect crisp line.
The scotch tape you have is called magic tape in the philippines. our scoth tape is very transparent. Magic tape is soo expensive conpared to scotch tape
Same in Italy. The one she's showing is magic tape and is much more expensive than the transparent one, which we simply call "scotch". And what she call "masking tape" we call it "paper tape"
Use a heating gun or hair dryer on the tape before removal, the heat loosens the adhesive and makes the tape simple to remove. No need to be too cautious or worry about ripping when using this method. It works on all tapes, just make sure you’re heating it only slightly so as not to melt whatever tape you’re using.
Oh thank you so much I’ve only started again painting a few years ago I recently started using watercolours and noticed my paper kept warping. I keep seeing artists taping down their work to prevent this but never knew what tape to use. Thank you so much for this tutorial really useful.
You can also use a heat gun lightly over your tape when you're ready to remove. It softens the adhesive and allows you to pull it off with no paper ripping.
In Canada, I'm familiar with it as "Painter's Tape". I have been using it a lot these days. I'm from the Philippines, but I wouldn't know what's called there. Your paintings are beautiful!
Do you have a turtle watercolor painting tutorial?? If not, I request you make one! I just started watching your videos and I learn something every video. ❤️❤️
Just wanna share this for another option: When I tear off the masking tape, I tear it slowly but instead of tearing it parallel to my paper, I angle it on a slanted position. It works, too!
Paper tape, masking tape, painters tape, washi tape. Different names for the same thing here, there's lots of names for it. Now I've said tape too many times it sounds strange lol
hi, when i am doing a watercolor painting the paper starts to warp and the edge lifts up WITH the tape, it doesnt do its job to hold it down! Any advice?
Hi Symphony - this is either because of the amount of water you are adding or have you added tape around the whole edge of paper? Also is your paper cellulose (wood) or cotton based. Sometimes cellulose based papers can do this - a tip to remedy this afterwards it to spray the BACK of the paper with a water spray and place in heavy book with weights on top when the first layer has dried then paint the next layer. If it buckles again repeat the process and eventually your work will be flat. Good Luck !!
In Chile it's called masking tape or Pegote. If anyone is interested in an alternative, I use surgical tape and it's absolutely amazing, it masks the paper very good and then you can remove it without damaging the paper. It's not the porous one but the one that is similar to masking tape, it's kinda made of cotton or paper I'm not entirely sure. Give it a try guys 😌👌
It will sometimes peel the paper off with it, it is a tricky thing and really depends on the paper and tape. If you use really high quality cotton paper it wont happen, but it does on student grade paper
Does the masking tape works on regular paper as well? If I don’t use water colour paper and use the normal cartridge sheet and use any medium, will the masking tape still work?
Hi Pannita - I have used masking on 140gsm when using oil pastel but would not recommend doing this with a wet media as I think it would rip and also I would try to remove it as soon as you can as it may stick to the surface and rip your paper.
I'm using Potentate watercolor paper 300gr. The quality is great but it's so hard to take the paper out of the sketchbook because the paper is glued 3 sides and I literally tear off 2 pages. Can you give me some tips for this? Or recommend some bands of paper?
Hi Nidhi - It really depends on the quality of the paper - it would need to be at least 200gsm - I usually use 300 gsm when using masking fluid and if you are doing wet on wet technique, I would be using at least 300 gsm.
It depends what type of paper and how much water you use - also a tip is that you should try to remove the 'tac' or stickiness before applying it as this can rip the paper.
I would not recommend leaving any tape on a finished art piece, and I will tell you why. As a custom framer I framed many older pieces of art, some fifty years and older, and had tape left on it still. When it came time to frame these pieces the tape left acid burns behind on the art, and nothing can fix that unfortunately. Tape contains acid, and it slowly burns away at the paper through contact. Please remove your tape if you want to preserve your pieces without acid burn!

Same, i saw that strategy in a video of art tips
Mike Cabral that's what I learned in my art classes too.
Nice! Thanks! will try out!
I’ve been having such trouble with masking tape and just started looking for new tape because of the sticking, I’ll have to try this!
I just knew this! Thanks a lot!

U didn't show us the results of scotch tape!

Moshy GG im from the philippines too and yeah it is
It is anywhere else but where it's made.. in America ;)
We call it invisible tape in Australia, because once you burnish it, you can't see it.
Oh nice! I'm from the Philippines! But I live in Canada now!
In India also we call it as magic tape
Same in Italy. The one she's showing is magic tape and is much more expensive than the transparent one, which we simply call "scotch".

In Germany it's called "Kreppband" and you can basically buy it in every hardware store or something like that
Thanks for sharing that!
I have been searching for the name in German, thanks!!

Great to watch a video where the teacher caters for more than just US viewers! :)

Apko pta h ky y tape useful h mtlb paper to ni fathta h na isse
@@reshmareshma83468 actually isse bhi phatta Hain. But cello tape se kam.
it also depends on the paper your using. almost all watercolor paper would not tear except you remove the tape when your paper is still wet.
Do you have a turtle watercolor painting tutorial?? If not, I request you make one! I just started watching your videos and I learn something every video. ❤️❤️
man your talent is very beautiful
In Sweden we call it ^maskerings tejp^ which is just a Swedish translation from masking tape :D
Thanks. I thought I was using the wrong masking tape but apparently I was not being careful enough when removing it.
For me the clear tape works the same as the painters tape. I used clear tape and it works fine
In Spanish or at least in Argentina it's called "cinta de enmascarar" o "cinta de pintor". It's a literal translation.
In Czech republic we call it:
maskovací páska🇨🇿.
Thanks for that video, helped a lot😅.

Can you do a tutorial on watercolor pens? specifically the nightscape ones? thank you😊
Amazing tape thankful for tip
I've seen a trick that they wet the tape a little before putting so it'll come off easier...
I have never tried that one
Im pretty sure that'll tear the paper or wrinkle it if it dries wrong...
I just run the tape across my shirt/pants so it takes away a little of the stickiness b4 attaching it to my paper
We call it masking tape too and we find them called pandayan bookstore and its from the Philippines
T'anks for the technique!
If we put a small amount of water on paper(with a brush) before putting the tape, it may help.
Very nice 😃
Just wanna share this for another option:

Good thinking. It's made to be gentle on skin and still hold. Should work well with paper.
