I can’t stress watercolor quality enough. There’s such a difference between $1 and $10 paints. I often get the question of how mine are smooth... it’s simple. Quality!
Yes! Some people get mad whenever I mention it's important to invest even just a little bit more into watercolors because it makes such a huge difference! You can create good art with cheap sets for sure, but for this to happen you already have to know how to use them properly. As a beginner you would just get frustrated and give up!
makoccino I feel the EXACT SAME! I’m not hating, but the harsh reality is you get what you pay for... but it upsets people every time I say it. I just hate the thought of someone thinking watercolor is difficult to work with and giving up because of a cheap set. :(
YES! omg. I can't stress this enough. I'm usually the type of person that goes for cheaper stuff in the begining (to test out the medium) and the way good quality watercolours work is such a different one compared to bad quality ones, that once I got some better colours it was as if I started in a completely new medium!

I try to think of every blank canvas or piece of paper as a place to play and experiment, not the place a potential masterpiece needs to go. The experiment didn't go as you might have hoped? That's okay, you were just trying something out and learning from it for the next experiment. Making a mess and disliking certain results is just part of the creative learning process for everyone.
I needed to take notes and I want to share them with you: 0:43 make sure you're using the right paper, mainly because normal paper doesn't work well with water colors 2:08 make sure to choose good quality colors, as cheap ones are gonna look less pigmented and make blending harder 3:54 be careful not to use too much or too little water. Personal suggestion: use the back of a painting you don't like to try and recreate the effect you're searching for 5:22 color bleeding 6:06 how to avoid weird staining and obtain a smooth gradient: apply a thin coat of water first, then apply paint in one go (premix it before if you find it easier) from top to bottom; in you want to intensify the color or add another one, wait for the first layer to fully dry or else you'll get staining. 7:49 muddy colors are explained in another video in which she explains how to mix colors properly, that video is gold
I was so lucky with my Windsor and Newton water colour set. I found the 36 pan set in a charity shop for £5 with only 1 colour having been used 😍 don't know who give it away but I'm thankful they did
I use both a cheap hobby craft palette (£7) and a slightly more expensive “Major Brushes” set (maybe £15) and they give relatively good results. As I’m only doing GCSE grade artwork (and I mainly prefer some good ol acrylic or biro/fineliner ink) I find that they work just fine, as I use them for background/washes for analysises or title pages
I feel stupid for asking but could you make a video on just the basic steps on how to watercolor? I am a beginner but I really want to try to learn how.

I think it was Van Gogh who said it, if they say you can't paint, then paint and you've proven them wrong. So... anyone can paint as long as you start painting. :)
I started with water colors using the Van Gogh set of 12. Most reviews out there say they're extremely comparable to artist grade paints. They're really amazing and mostly single pigments. Since buying them, I've built my set up with a few more colors from Schminke, and to be honest, I can barely tell a difference. GO BUY VAN GOGH IF YOU WANT TO START PAINTING WITH WATER COLORS!!! You WILL NOT regret the purchase. It's really unbelievable the quality you get for your money.
0:20 This reminds me of when I was using watercolor and forgot to let an area around a golden fish I was painting dry, so the fish's color seeped into the area around it, but actually made it look better because it looked like an aura around it

Lovely video! I found Penguin watercolour paint, dirt cheap and was astounded by the pigment saturation and vibrancy of the dry paint. I also bought paint fourteen times the cost of Penguin and could not see or feel the difference. Maybe Im just lucky. But to you out there who cant afford to spend a lot, rather invest in better paper and brushes. A good artist will always deliver excellent results with what they have. Makocinno, I recently thought of a weird hack or 'hack'. I cut out sponges of different sizes and used it for water color. The surface will be smooth and if you brush the sponge properly and nicely, the colour will be very beautiful. Also, to combine colours, I use one third of the sponge for each different colour and it works (for me). If i want to create gradations, i watercolour the sponge at the top and bottom and I leave a small gap in the middle and theres a slight blend in the middle which is kinda nice. I thought that the sponge will be a good material as it absorbs water or something.....and it looks suitable for water colour. Do tell me if this is a bad idea so that I know this is not good for some reasons, and let me know if this method is acceptable. ..♥♥♥♥ thank you for all your videos and hacks/tips. They are as amazing and stunning as you. I will support you and watch your videos forever. Sorry for uttering nonsense but I really appreciate if you reply me. Thank you.♥♥♥ #makoficationsquad
For those who want to start off with watercolour but don't want to waste expensive colours, try camel artist watercolours. They are inexpensive but professional quality. Mako, u might want to review them for yourself and your viewers. Great tutorial btw! My very first wc painting came out well thanks to your tips
makoccino Ohhh, Im just joking, Hehehe I know there so many peoples at here because of your talent and your videos. Sorry if I make you feel bad.. I Didn't mean to do that.. 😅
5:57 i use an old hair drier for that!! I use an old one because the stream of air is very gentle but still kind of warm. Newer hair driers have a really harsh stream and it shoots the water away 😅 I can get big wet areas dry in less than a minute. Consider this especially if you are impatient, it’s not necessary to buy an expensive heating tool! 😁
I do that too! I wouldn't recommend using that if there are lots of puddles of water! Otherwise the areas with less water dry quicker and the more wet areas will create the cauliflower effect tin the already dried areas!
#makoficationsquad your painting skills are literally out of this world mako! The last tip is the one i found most helpful. Thank you and keep making these awesome videos!
I used normal printer paper once on my art/mapeh subsject since i didn't know that there is watercolor paper😂 But i got a pretty good grade on it and my friends liked it too😀
#makoficationsquad Late again and again😖 I use cheap watercolor stuff and i'm still learning.I buy cheap stuff to save money🙂 It's pretty good but it's not as good as the expensive or higher priced one.
What happens if there's an emergency that calls me away from my painting? Is there anything I can do to protect it from drying out, or am I just out of luck?

Omg!! The tip about the cauliflower effect completely helped me out! I should really lower the amount of water I’m using, and be patient to let everything dry! Layering the paint over a dry layer would help me much more than painting a new color over it right away!! Thanks so much!! I love your videos they’re so helpful calm and encouraging!

They are as amazing and stunning as you. I will support you and watch your videos forever. Sorry for uttering nonsense but I really appreciate if you reply me. Thank you.♥♥♥ #makoficationsquad
Rainbow unicorn interesting but if u applied spong wouldnt it soak up all the water quikly ... guess ud hv to use alot of water
If you like how it looks, go for it! :)
For those who want to start off with watercolour but don't want to waste expensive colours, try camel artist watercolours. They are inexpensive but professional quality. Mako, u might want to review them for yourself and your viewers. Great tutorial btw! My very first wc painting came out well thanks to your tips
Flipping #makoficationsquad ! I clicked on it so fast. Love ya! 💞

makoccino You never Noticing me.. Even I ask something.. 😔
Please give me some time to catch up, there are way too many comments/messages to handle for me 🙈
makoccino Ohhh, Im just joking, Hehehe I know there so many peoples at here because of your talent and your videos.

I really like your video because you don't say "Avoid the cauliflower effect!" or "Avoid bleeding!". Sometimes I just want those effects. :)
I used normal printer paper once on my art/mapeh subsject since i didn't know that there is watercolor paper😂
But i got a pretty good grade on it and my friends liked it too😀

What happens if there's an emergency that calls me away from my painting? Is there anything I can do to protect it from drying out, or am I just out of luck?

aah all this time i was using the wrong paper 😐
Thank u for the video. it was really helpful ❤
I wish I'd seen this video 4 years ago when I started watercolour again....I learned a LOT of these the hard way!
That said I don't know why people hate cauliflowering- - I like it. I think it's part of the medium.
4 likes and no view's UA-cam is drunk.
Hey nice vid...these hacks of dos and don'ts are literally helpful... Just I don't get how to give contrast and brighten or highlight some parts...plz plz make a vid on it...#makoficationsquad...
Nice compliment
Well, I am just so glad I found this video.
How can I know if the watercolor is FAKE??
They are usually super chalky! Too bad they are all called watercolors, but there is such a huge difference between the proper watercolor paints and the "fake" ones :(
makoccino Ohh, thank you very much! 😍
Also the price!
I use watercolors from an art kit for 5 year olds, but it works for me!
Thank you for these tips, right noe I'm using the cheap watercolor to just play around with the medium till I can get confident enough to move up.
Thanks it helps me a alot
I have White Night watercolors and they are very good.I recommend
i'm in love with your channel! you inspired me to start with watercolor once again. i kinda stopped using it because it was hard to control it. i watched some of your videos, and i'm in the game again. thanks! #makoficationsquad
Aww that's awesome!
