Best NOT to be tempted to dry with a heat tool or hairdryer as the masking fluid might bake into the paper, making it impossible to remove. Allow it to dry completely naturally…generally between 15-30 minutes depending on how thickly you’ve applied it.
Another tip is to pour a small amount of the masking fluid into a small ( eg. water bottle) lid you are recycling/ reusing and quickly recapping the original container…as air will dry out the contents of the original bottle super quickly. As it is, most brands of masking fluid won’t remain useable indefinitely.
A crepe rubber pick up eraser works best. Does not lift the paper. It's a really bumpy hard eraser. You can find them in any art store.
I have never heard of a "crepe rubber" before, but that visibly describes my "glue eraser", so I guess the name varies depending on where you live.
I use one too. So much easier!
Yes rubber picker works well, I use it too
You can also use silicone tipped modelling brushes to apply masking fluid.
I protect my brushes with dish liquid/liquid soap. Also, it makes clean up easier. I also have these special pen things that are metal for applying fine lines of masking fluid.
There is a special masking fluid eraser that works much better then kneaded eraser. I use it all the time.
Great content! This is the first you tube video I’ve seen teaching about masking. It’s such a useful tool.
I use silicone tipped tools to apply masking fluid. Peels right off the tip when dry. They come in different shapes and sizes.
Ruling pen to apply masking fluid. You can change the line thickness and the rubber peels right off when done.
Morning Emma. I found a set of silicone tools that I can use to apply the masking fluid. They come in different shapes for bigger or smaller projects. Thank you for sharing.
I have used them also and you just have to let the masking fluid dry and peel it off
Hi! I’m planing to buy W&N masking fluid, so this video is just what I needed!😄 Molotow is always leaving some spots and marks, so I don’t like it a lot. Sometimes I make a conture with it, and then apply regular liquid masking fluid inside this marks. It works a little better.. for removing dry masking fluid from a painting, I’ve wraped my finger in a plastic bag. This way was the easiest from my expirience.
Sorry for my bad English, btw…😬
I recommend cement rubber eraser. I don’t use my finger bc I was taught that the oils from your fingers can potentially transfer onto your paper. My first attempt at masking fluid went horribly wrong. I was so excited over the painting. My sky looked gorgeous. My trees were popping. I used the fluid to cover my roof of the cabin bc I wanted it to look like snow was on the roof. When I started to remove, I noticed some spots refused to remove, some areas removed perfectly but then some areas actually removed the paper. It was Canson 140lb 300 gsm Cold pressed. I was devastated. Nothing like feeling pure joy over where your painting is going when you realize that you ruined it and can’t fix it. I used Gouache finally for the roof to try and cover the areas but it still didn’t look right. I definitely agree to test before applying to your actual painting. Much love everyone and Merry Christmas 🎄
Awesome tutorial! Thanks so much…BTW love the daisy painting ♥️
Ty for a great instructional video! I’m glad you said that the masking fluid can ruin brushes because I just bought a little more expensive brushes and will use my old ones for masking my paintings!
Good one! I got really frustrated with the Molotow, and seeing how easy it is with the W&N, I now know it's going to be worth the try!! ❤
Thanks Emma, for the masking fluid tutorial; I understand it better now.
I love those brushes. I have them. Great for detailing
Excellent video! Thank you so much.
Thanks for this wonderful teaching good to know God bless you
Excellent information how to use masking fluid!
The soap tip makes me nervous but I can test it in my art journal 😅
I use a rubber cement eraser with mine and it works well
I also heard : use a glass pen for apply mask fluid, also for remove it again ! It's easier to clean too !
Thankyou Very helpful
A rubber cement pickup works best for removing masking fluid.
i really enjoyed this video very much! what about masking fluid with watercolour pencils?
I could use a set of detailed brushes for masking fluid. Can you provide the link to the pack you used today?
Great video Emma, well explained and demonstrated and now I can't wait to get some and try it out. Thanks for sharing. :-)
How well does masking fluid work if I apply it to an already watercolor area
I rub my brush on a wet bar of soap protects it well.
How much time does it take to dry?
anyone have any ideas of how long it might take to dry, because i am quite unsure about determining when it definitly is...
Huzzah & thank you thank you.
To avoid the graphite marks use a 7h pencil instead 😊
Great video! Did the masking fluid come out of the brush when you used soap? Just curious!
Hi Laura, I completely cover my bristles in bar soap. If I’m using a lot of masking fluid for say like landscapes, I sometimes clean the brush before I've finished and cover it well with soap again and continue masking and then I clean it well afterwards. And yes, it comes off nicely.
@@lainareeves3755 Thank you!
A rubber cement eraser takes it right off.
I have a bottle of Daniel Smith masking fluid and trying to peel it off almost gave me Tourett's syndrome.
It sticks so much that it is almost impossible to remove it.
You should try a ruling pen instead
What kind of tape did you use to frame it ?
Painters tape from the dollarstore
Thanks
Thank you so much!
I lift the masking fluid with my electric eraser 😅
Thank you Emma 😊. I've tried masking fluid before and it's still on the paper lololol 😅 I forgot about painting it. Oh well? Thanks again JK FLORIDA 🇺🇸
Use the sticky side of masking tape and it takes the masking fluid off easily. Also a pickup eraser...it is solid and rubs it off easily.
I did that carefully and rip off the paper
Hello beautiful
