Thanks so much Susanne. Burls are amazing and I saved this one for a long time.. The last big one I had but I do have some trimmings I may be able to make something out of. Thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful bowl, Gary. This is what makes the difference between just a turner and an artist. As I was watching this, before you started removing the center of the bowl, I'd leave the center mound, about 3" wide and 1/2 to 3/4 the height of the bowl. Scoop it out with fairly straight up and down sides, both inside and outside the mound, to make a place to put a bowl of chip dip.
Thank you John. It does make it easier to cut the inside walls by leaving a mass in the middle. Not seeing putting a dip bowl in the middle. It would cover up all that nice grain. But I will make one of those with something else. Thanks fr watching, Gary
Turning a beautiful bowl out of what was or could have been firewood with nails in it only shows that you have great talent. Very nice job. Thank you for sharing.
Perfect. I’m betting the other part of the original blank has a piece of mail too. Beautiful chunk of wood. You got a very cool bowl out of it. Well done my friend.
I didn't see any but I did not see the ones I hit LOL. I sure wanted to turn it the way it sat but I think I would have ended up turning turning it away. Cutting if off was the best option at the the time. Thanks for watching!
A beautiful bowl Gary. Great repair of the worm screw hole. You are right, it's invisible. Interestingly I did something similar last week. I'm still trying to decide how to fix it. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Good evening, Gary. I appreciate your video. "Stick with it," is a good title. You "Nailed" this project. Might even call it the golf bowl. We did see you get a hole in one. Ok, enough with the corny stuff. The bowl is a beautiful piece. Looking forward to your next adventure, my friend.
Thank you Ray not corny at all. You had me laughing on those perfect titles. I am very happy with how it turned out...bandsaw blade was not happy but he had a dull sense of humor. Glad you liked it my friend, Gary
Beautiful bowl and a great save! That burl is awesome and you brought the beauty out in it! Too bad about the nails but you never know what is present when people have been around the tree! Well done and thanks! Cheers Al
Great solution to a self made problem, and one that I've filed away for when I make the same mistake one day. Nice to see that even a turner with your vast experience sometimes can be error prone. Makes me feel better over some of my own boo boos and it's a lovely looking burl bowl Gary. Nice one sir!!
Thank you Collin I am happy with how it turned out. Not so happy with the boo boo but that ended up working out. Lesson learned. If you cut 2 nails walk away and get that off your mind before going to the next step LOL. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gray, the burl looks amazing! Too bad about the nails and the drilling mistake. It’s a real surprise running into internal objects. Thanks for sticking with it!
Turned out great. Love the grain. Yard trees are fun. I hit 3 on a cherry log on my sawmill. Destroyed the blade. Then certain I had gotten them all (wrong) I found 3 more. One with the table saw and 2 on the lathe on the strips I cut on the sawmill. I made firewood. It needed to be disposed of.
Thanks Rick. This is actually the first nails I can remember cutting in a chunk of wood. I do recall as an apprentice patternmaker cutting a number of screws. A blade for a saw mill is going to cost a lot more than my bandsaw blade. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thank you Billy. Lucky it was real busy with burls in the middle so it was pretty easy to put something there that would blend in. Nice to hear you could not see the patch. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
Worth the time and effort, Gary. Beautiful video with lots to learn. Just repaired a paper towel holder base with a dowel plug so it can have new life. I always forget coffee grounds, but I keep Wenge dust and shavings around, so same idea. Be well!
Thank you very much Peter. In my mind I could see that the patch would work. I was sure happy to see it when I got down to it. But pretty easy to had a small patch in all those burls. Thanks for watching, Gary
It’s beautiful, Gary and you can’t see the join, and it has given me, a mere mortal, hope. I cut through two screws in two weeks on my chop saw and ruined two blades ☹️🌞
It was worth all the efforts, dulling your band saw blade and all. The sanding sealer really brought it to life again. Excellent job!!!!! KEEP ON TURNING
Nice save Gary! I’ve done that a few times myself. You’d think I would learn after one or two 😂 I’ve never had the opportunity to turn a burl and look forward to finding one. That worked out beautifully for you. I love the patterns and the finish!! Sad about the nails. I dread finding y first one!! Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick. The burl was given to me by someone local probably 3 years or more. The nails came with it 🥴😜🥹 but it all worked out. Thanks for watching. Gary
WOW!!! That looks so amazing Gary. It can be so frustrating running into nails and then making mistakes. Can’t even see where you plugged the hole. When you applied the finish this burl really came to life. Very well done. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thank you Scott. My rule is when I am frustrated(like cutting 2 nails) is to walk away. Maybe a cup of coffee or since it was 93 degrees here yesterday some ice water. I sure drank a lot of that. Then you can come back with a clear head. But the patch did work out well. Thanks for watching, Gary
Nice looking bowl! Did a good job plugging up that hole, I never thought f using the same wood that you cut away. Me, I would have used a piece of walnut or something I had laying around, then I would never hear the end of “Why did you use something other than maple?”. Nice bowl.
Thank you Joe. I just could not use anything but maple burl for the plug. If it had not worked I would probably have used Walnut. Large diameter though. Mine would have been plugged on the bottom and no buddy would have known. Well if you watched the video you would have 🥴😂
You continue to bring back memories for me. Having a couple of nails embedded in the timber reminded me when I was serving my apprenticeship in the UK way back in late 50's early 60's we regularly came across bullets and shrapnel embedded in jelutong imported from Malaysia. Another beautiful grained bowl which as always is a credit to you.
Thank you Laura. I figured a burl has many different looks so a turn piece from the same burl should be pretty close. And it was. Happy you enjoyed the video, Gary
Thank you Julian. Looking forward to turning the potato 🥔. Hope there are no nails in it or I will make mashed potatoes out of it 😂 I think it will be fine. Thanks for watching, Gary
Very nice bowl Gary. I just finished turning the inside of an end grain maple bowl yesterday that was hard and slow going. I really enjoyed watching you turn yours.
papa, That’s a beauty! Sometimes errors and mistakes are nothing more than wonderful works of art waiting to be discovered. Keep the aspidistra flying! God bless, Paul
Beautiful maple wood and such a very nice bowl! Well turned! Oh, and metal in trees.... Gotta love yard trees! Because of nails, I've busted at least a couple saw chains parting out yard trees over the years. Once while turning, I ran into a 3" wood screw deep in a bowl blank. Had to replace that carbide bit. It certainly makes you wonder how and when they get there, let alone why! 👍
Thank you Crystal! It is not common to have an angle already cut on a burl. The sad thing is I knew it was there duh! Worth pointing out. Thanks for watching, Gary
Gary the effort was all worth the effort. You have made another great piece of art. I hope someday that I can create art like that. Thank you for your effort
What do we think? We think it looks great. Depending upon the light, it can be the color of brass or the color of bronze. And every inch has some interesting grain. Thanks for explaining about the challenges of burl wood. We, (there are two of us watching) find it much more interesting when the artist talks the audience through the process. Thank you for sharing this.
Well thank you very much Deirdre . Your comments mean a lot to me. I am talking myself through what my next steps are so why not let you know what I am doing. Even out in the shop when I was not doing videos I always talked out loud about what I was going to do next. My wife would come out and ask who I was talking to. Thanks again your comments tell me I am doing the right thing. Gary
Thanks so much Heather. Up to the point of putting the first cut of finish on it I was wishing it had burls all the way around. But I really like the contrast of the burls to the rest of it. Thanks for watching, Gary
G’day Gary, burls are always interesting and often hide amazing things some good some not so. When you said you made a silly mistake I wondered what it could be, I even went back to beginning of video but couldn’t see anything amiss, i wondered if you had put hole in wrong side. Oh well I thought, love to see how that was fixed, lucky it was burl with no grain in any direction. Can be lucky sometimes. What a beautiful bowl from inauspicious beginnings. Never ever going to be firewood.. Thanks Gary
Seemed that piece of wood was trying to be a hardware shop with those nails 😉 but everthing turned out fine in the end mate. That is a lovely bowl. Take care,Bram
Thank you Bram. I should cut the piece apart that has the nail in it. The head should be there and if it is long enough maybe I can use it LOL. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
Thank you Jane. It was time to get it off the shelf of my pole shed. It was pretty heavy so it was time to turn. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks Dwight. I will say I was not happy with myself. I think I had those 2 nails on my mind. My rule has always been never rush. It is always faster in the end. Thanks for watching, Gary
I really do wish burl wood was more common, but it just isn’t. It always creates the coolest looking pieces. It is almost always more work because of the unusual grain, but it’s also always worth it. This is a very nice bowl. I’d be curious to see what kind of creation you could make with that other piece of wood you cut off of this and some epoxy.
Thanks Adam. I was very lucky to be given this burl. They are hard to come by unless you but them. The only wood I buy is kiln dried for segment work. The fancy stuff, Thanks for watching. Gary
Thanks Huw, to say the least I was mad at myself for a simple mistake. Two options....not turn it as planed or try a fix it. I knew the burl would be busy looking in the middle so I took a chance and it worked. Sure was happy with that. Thanks for watching. Hwyl, Gary
A great lesson in perseverance and overcoming problems- even ones you create for yourself! Beautiful bowl, thanks for sharing the turnings that don't go as planned.
Thank Johnny. I was determined to overcome the problem I created. Cutting 2 nails did not help plus going in for some extensive dental work. I guess I should have walked away for 30 minutes after the last nail. Gary
Garry, it may have been a lot of work but the end result turned out really nice and your wee repair job will not be noticed, only because you told everyone lol, anyway great job buddy well done.
Thanks Alan. I showed it because if you do something like cut through 2 nails it is best to walk away and come back with a clear head. Thanks for watching, Gary
And so you should be happy, wonderful ending to a disaster start, but you beat it into a great bowl top job Gary. All the best from Lincolnshire UK. PS how's they leg coming on.
Thank you Mark. It was not an easy turn even without the problems. Happy with how it turned out but not happy I had to plug a hole that did not belong there. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks Garth. Yeah sometimes I can do without a surprise. My bandsaw blade says the same. But I never felt it slow down at all. Thanks for watching, Gary
Might be good idea Joe. I do not have one but I have a stud finder the can find nails. I just could not imagine that there was a nail let alone two nails in there. Thanks for watching, Gary
Whoa, that's some beautiful figure in the Maple burl, Gary! Yeah, you made a great fix but, it was probably pretty easy to do with all the built in camouflage provide by the grain. LOL! I know what you mean about sanding that lighter color wood, very frustrating and if you're not careful (you were) you end up with dips and valleys where there were none before! DAMHIKT! Excellent job, lots of fun to watch you work your way through this one. Keep'em coming, my friend! 😄 Phil
Thanks Phil! As soon as I could tell there was lots figure in the middle I figured it would work. I was hoping there was burl every where but it worked out fine because there was some pretty cool looking grain it the light colored wood. Which I really could not see till the finish went on. Or I needed to clean my glasses LOL. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
Thank You Gary and GOOD MORNING... I think that is a beautiful grain bowl with LOTS of character! I was thinking (omg, again). What if you took that beautiful top and turned it into a simple lid for your beautiful bowl. That top, irregular shape would make a striking visual touch to the traditional bowl?? TM
Thank you Ronnie. It was getting dull before the nails. It still cuts but for now it sits in my metal nin. They are not real expensive but they are good blades. Been getting blades from them for 40 years. They make them fit your saw . Thanks for watching, Gary
It’s not that I don’t WANT to watch a 3 hr video of you, I just don’t have the time haha. My son had a double header today, it’s always tough balancing time!
Hi Ben I recall when our oldest son was in senior Babe Ruth. Lots of double headers I could not watch my own 3 hour video if I made one. Editing would be a nightmare. Maybe I will work into it with a 2 hour one LOL . Nope going to keep them the way they are. Plus or minus a few minutes. Thanks for watching my friend, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 as much as I think short videos may co tribute to adult onset ADD, I agree with you lol. I feel like ballpark 20 minutes is a good time where you don’t need snacks and to make sure you went to the bathroom first, but long enough for some good and thorough content!
It's a very pretty piece and very pretty wood. How bad did those nails hurt your bandsaw blade? Your videos are always very enjoyable. I hope to see you on the next one
Thank you Albert. Well I considered it to be no good after that. But I was about ready to replace it anyway. A dull blade leads to bad cuts. Anytime you have to push hard it is time to change it. Thanks for watching, Gary
Nice one, Gary! I hate nails in wood. They can sure screw up a nice saw blade. A lot of the local tree trimmers in East Texas use metal detectors to find metal in trees before cutting them. Lots of property owners here in days past drove large nails into trees to reduce timber theft. Question: Are you using coffee grounds where you have aleady brewed, or do you just buy a can of coffee for that purpose to patch holes/cracks in wood?
Thanks John, I as surprised someone put 2 nails in a burl. The blade may have still cut softer wood in a straight line but I tossed because it got pretty dull after the second nail I use unbrewed coffee. My machine will make a pot of coffee or use the pods so I always have a can of coffee. Gary
Beautiful job, as usual.I guess one of the advantages of turning burls with their grain patterns is that they help hide any patches. Couldn't see yours at all. Just curious, do you think a stud finder would have detected the nails in the piece and saved your bandsaw blades? I wouldn't have thought to check it but after the first nail it may have been worth it. Glad to see you up and in the shop again.
Thank you Tom. Not sure if a stud finder would find it but I have a nice one. A rare earth magnet might found it. I can test the piece I cut off and hit the nail and see. Thanks for the idea, Gary
Thank Jack. This is the first time I ever ran into a nail. I guess it might be good if I lost something on the floor as well. Not sure I have seen anyone use one check for nails. Might be handy though. Gary
@@ThePapa1947 When I first started watching UA-cam on woodworking, it was common, not so much anymore. The price is worth it now. Your choice. Please keep up the informative and entertaining videos.
As always you did a nice job. My neighbor has a burl on one of his trees, but it's too high for an old man to get it. If I might ask a question. What are the angles on your negative rake scraper?
We sure don't want to be climbing trees. I used to have it 40 degrees too and bottom. I wanted to reshape the nose so I ground it 37° on top and bottom. Both of those work fine.
Nice repair Papa, and a pretty bowl. I love burrs. Have you ever used instant coffee powder for filling with ca glue? I've used ground stuff but there's always little gaps (small) which bug me. So I tried cheap powder instant coffee and it looks more solid. Might not suit you though. When I first got on the internet you and Phil Anderson were the first turners that I discovered, which was about 4 years ago (doesn't time fly) and since then I've found more. You two and Richard Raffan are now my go to UA-cam guys. I think you mentioned that you played guitar at your church and I wondered if you have heard of John Prine? He wrote some beautiful songs, not religious, but might as well be. Best regards from Scotland. PS watch yourself in the heat. 🙃
Thank you John! No I have not used instant coffee. But I have used very fine sanding dust which is probably like instant coffee. Might have to try some of it but I do not drink it. Instant that is. I did not think I would ever drink coffee till I got drafted in 1967. When I was thinking about starting a channel Phil encouraged me to. Yes I do play guitar. I have heard of him but have not listened to much of his music. I will check it out. It is 100 degrees at the moment but I am inside with the AC. Thanks for watching, Gary
There's wood turning in heaven if you want. It will be different. The wood will sing and will always have life in it. It will be more glorious than you ever imagined.
Thanks Dave. I wonder how deep it will detect. I have a real nice stud finder. It will detect metal. Who would have thought there was going to be not one but 2 nails in it...duh! Only one went into the blank so it was easy to not hit it. But I still left the old blade in. Thanks for watching, Gary
A long time ago I was resawing some cherry into planks and ran into lead buckshot. Fortunately it was lead and not copper clad, copper might have ruined the blade.
Your talent did that maple burl justice. Burls are always magical. I love the bark inclusion. Absolutely outstanding bowl!
Thanks so much Susanne. Burls are amazing and I saved this one for a long time.. The last big one I had but I do have some trimmings I may be able to make something out of.
Thanks for watching,

Hey Gary that looks great! Nice save with the nail and the drilling

The "plain" area of stripes is sooo lovely, and the rest of the burl is great! Your fix of the mistake hole I think is invisible in the final piece.

Thanks Gary
Thank you Greg.
This where going in and having
a big cup of coffee after the second nail would have been a good idea 😂.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Great job on that repair, Gary! Sweet burl!
Thank you Clayton happy you liked it.
Gary
WOWZA!!!! Look at that Chaytoyance! The feathers are gorgeous!!! IA truly stunning bowl. ❤❤❤❤
Thank you Jane. It was time to get it off the shelf of my pole shed. It was pretty heavy so it was time to turn.
Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, I don't see a goof up. It is just a design change. I didn't see it until you pointed it out. Another great bowl.
Thanks Dwight. I will say I was not happy with myself. I think I had those 2 nails on my mind.
My rule has always been never rush. It is always faster in the end.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I'm glad you persisted. Great result

Well, you did it again a one-of-a-kind Bowl. Fantastic job. Thanks Tim
Thank you Tim. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
WOW gary look at that beautifull grain. love it.
Thanks Manjit! It really is amazing grain. Nature at her best.
Take care,
Gary
I really do wish burl wood was more common, but it just isn’t. It always creates the coolest looking pieces. It is almost always more work because of the unusual grain, but it’s also always worth it. This is a very nice bowl. I’d be curious to see what kind of creation you could make with that other piece of wood you cut off of this and some epoxy.
Thanks Adam. I was very lucky to be given this burl.
They are hard to come by unless you but them.
The only wood I buy is kiln dried for segment work. The fancy stuff,
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Beautiful bowl you just showed me new tricks on that beautiful bowl thanks you very much
Thank you Denis I appreciate you watching and commenting,
Gary
Watched this and the Walnut one back to back.
Fantastic save on the miss drilled hole.
Stunning burr in this piece.
Take care my friend.
Hwyl, Huw
Thanks Huw, to say the least I was mad at myself for a simple mistake. Two options....not turn it as planed or try a fix it.
I knew the burl would be busy looking in the middle so I took a chance and it worked. Sure was happy with that.
Thanks for watching.
Hwyl,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful bowl, Gary. 😊😊
Thank you Rob!
Love it Gary and nice job cutting that dowel in from the nail piece fixing that hole!😎👍
Thanks Kinsey. Sure wasn't planned but it worked

And so you should be happy, wonderful ending to a disaster start, but you beat it into a great bowl top job Gary. All the best from Lincolnshire UK. PS how's they leg coming on.
Thanks so much Gary. It was a challenge but I do like a challenge.
Leg is doing great. Been released to full actives.

@@ThePapa1947 You’re very welcome.
That looks awesome, even with all the problems you had.
Thank you Mark. It was not an easy turn even without the problems.
Happy with how it turned out but not happy I had to plug a hole that did not belong there.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
What would bowl turning be without surprises? Design changes are a part of it. That turned out beautiful. Thanks
Thanks Garth. Yeah sometimes I can do without a surprise. My bandsaw blade says the same. But I never felt it slow down at all.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice fix!!! Turned out great!!
Thanks Tom, I appreciate your comments.
Gary
That is Absolutely Stunning it put up a fight but wow what a bowl
Thank you Colin. It sure did put up a battle but was well worth it.

A stunning piece Gary such beautiful grains 😊
Thanks Ian. Glad I cut the potato off the top. It will be fun too see what kind of grain we have,

Really pretty Gary...a metal detector has saved my tools many times...stay safe...press on 😎Joe
Might be good idea Joe. I do not have one but I have a stud finder the can find nails. I just could not imagine that there was a nail let alone two nails in there.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 I've also found bullets and barbed wire...fun stuff
That's beautiful Gary!
Thank you Chris!
Definitely beautiful work as usual brother 😎👍🏽
Thank you my friend! Happy you liked it.
Gary
Whoa, that's some beautiful figure in the Maple burl, Gary! Yeah, you made a great fix but, it was probably pretty easy to do with all the built in camouflage provide by the grain. LOL! I know what you mean about sanding that lighter color wood, very frustrating and if you're not careful (you were) you end up with dips and valleys where there were none before! DAMHIKT! Excellent job, lots of fun to watch you work your way through this one. Keep'em coming, my friend! 😄
Phil
Thanks Phil! As soon as I could tell there was lots figure in the middle I figured it would work. I was hoping there was burl every where but it worked out fine because there was some pretty cool looking grain it the light colored wood. Which I really could not see till the finish went on. Or I needed to clean my glasses LOL.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Great job Gary, beautiful piece of wood .

Спасибо, друг, я ценю твои комментарии.

TM
Great idea TM. Just not sure if it is big enough . Yeah that shape may have looked ok if left on. I wasn't seeing it at the time. Too late LOL
Gary
Way to save a beautiful bowl. I love the grain, ended up with a great piece.
Thank you Fred. Happy you like how it turned out.
Gary
Mmmm, burl. Another good one, Gary. See you in Portland.
Thanks Valerie. I will not be long now.
See ya!
Gary
Lovely bowl Gary it sure turned out beautiful, did you have to replace your bandsaw blade, thankyou for sharing Gary it was a pleasure to watch
Thank you Ronnie. It was getting dull before the nails. It still cuts but for now it sits in my metal nin.
They are not real expensive but they are good blades.
Been getting blades from them for 40 years. They make them fit your saw .
Thanks for watching,
Gary
It’s not that I don’t WANT to watch a 3 hr video of you, I just don’t have the time haha. My son had a double header today, it’s always tough balancing time!
Hi Ben
I recall when our oldest son was in senior Babe Ruth. Lots of double headers
I could not watch my own 3 hour video if I made one. Editing would be a nightmare.
Maybe I will work into it with a 2 hour one LOL .
Nope going to keep them the way they are. Plus or minus a few minutes.
Thanks for watching my friend,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice character wood. Beautiful
Thank you very much Khan!
Take care,
Gary
Nice one, Gary!
I hate nails in wood. They can sure screw up a nice saw blade. A lot of the local tree trimmers in East Texas use metal detectors to find metal in trees before cutting them. Lots of property owners here in days past drove large nails into trees to reduce timber theft.
Question: Are you using coffee grounds where you have aleady brewed, or do you just buy a can of coffee for that purpose to patch holes/cracks in wood?
Thanks John, I as surprised someone put 2 nails in a burl.
The blade may have still cut softer wood in a straight line but I tossed because it got pretty dull after the second nail
I use unbrewed coffee. My machine will make a pot of coffee or use the pods so I always have a can of coffee.
Gary
Nice! Quick thinking on your part to get a great solution.
Thank you Donald. It did work out pretty nicely.
Thanks for the idea,
Gary
Beautiful work Gary. Might be a good idea for a metal detector..
Thank Jack. This is the first time I ever ran into a nail.
I guess it might be good if I lost something on the floor as well. Not sure I have seen anyone use one check for nails.
Might be handy though.

@@ThePapa1947 When I first started watching UA-cam on woodworking, it was common, not so much anymore. The price is worth it now. Your choice. Please keep up the informative and entertaining videos.

Beautiful bowl of wood 😊😊
Thank you very much!

Amazon has a handheld metal detector for about $20.
Thanks Dave. I wonder how deep it will detect. I have a real nice stud finder. It will detect metal.
Who would have thought there was going to be not one but 2 nails in it...duh! Only one went into the blank so it was easy to not hit it. But I still left the old blade in.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
A long time ago I was resawing some cherry into planks and ran into lead buckshot. Fortunately it was lead and not copper clad, copper might have ruined the blade.
