Just wanted to tell you that seems like a different type of video and it suits you very much. I'd like to see more like these
I’ve always used google maps as I get a SIM card for each country I visit and I’ve never had a issue. I’ve just come back from a month travelling in Thailand and it only let me down once taking me into the jungle on washed out trails, unfortunately I was riding a Honda scooter 😂
I use scout sat nav as a back up, it’s pretty basic but it works, you just download the country you need.
Great videos keep them coming.
Interesting information. Thank you. Cheers!
While in France last year my BMW Nav 5 crashed, forced to use the TFT turn by turn on my GSA1250. It worked absolutely fine and got to my destination no issues. More commonly now I’m using my iPhone with Google Maps or Calimoto mounted on Quadlock mount, perfect.
I like using REVER. It has good trip planning tools I can perform from my computer and download it to the app on my phone. I can navigate using line navigation or turn by turn. Routing can also be performed on the phone.
I use LocusMap Pro, has a great feature set including trip planner, gpx import and export, and download offline maps along a track.
I also use a Garmin 64st because it's durable and weather proof.
And Google Maps, like you, to find fuel, stores, hours, etc.
Wot I would like to know regarding the Africa Twin. Is the CarPlay a straight forward plug and play or is it a pain in the bottom setting it up????????? Please do a video
pair the phone with helmet and maps me will guide you as well, also try german kurviger really good for motorcycles in mind with twisties scenic routes lot of options also added data for accommodation and stuff
Calimoto is great if you like to plans trips !The feature I love the most, is that you can setup your waypoints and choose the type of roads you want to take between them.
Makes it very convenient for me as I usually want to get out of the city quickly and then go on secondary road.
What about TomTom? It enables you to plan complicated routes and also knows where the fixed and mobile speed trap are.
you the best Cristian.
What brand is that perfect mobile holder?
what app can i use to just have the gps on the phone without a destination. i like just riding around, when i have google maps open on my phone without a destination my phone goes to sleep (screen just turns off normally) and i even have display always on set (i use a galaxy s 9)
I travel around Europe only and. Found google maps works fine. As my EE network provider give me unlimited data including EU it’s no brainer to use google maps. I have navigation in my k1600 but use it once and it was shite compare to google maps so now I bought used iPhone and will replace the nav in k1600 from garmin and stay there. Don’t use new phones on handlebars on motorbike as they have sophisticated cameras with image stabilization and do to constant vibration while ride it can be easily damage and it cost lots of bucks to replace in phone service if you said true how it happen while on warranty even in Apple warranty disclaimer it’s state no free repair if use on handlebar!! Just buy second phone and use as nav and you can tether your data between your phones
This is great consumer advise. One question: which of these apps can import gpx tracks or routes? I always make my own routes on the computer with Basecamp, make a track of the route and import the track to my Zumo. But the Zumo is something you can forget, a smartphone is always in your pocket.
Perhaps you could give similar advice for which programs are great to make your own routes and can export them in gpx-format.
palantir135 OsmAnd for sure. That's how I used it on the TET
Try Here Maps - it is like Google maps but it has a real functioning offline mode. You can download detailed maps with the POI's
I've only ever used a tom tom or a Garmin unit for planning my trips. Google shot themselves in the foot in my opinion by preventing the sharing of routes planned in Google MAps with either of these two navigation units, I have MAps Me installed and I note a few global travellers are using it most of the time so it must be pretty good. I found the build quality, durability and reliability of the navigation on the tom Tom rider to be hopeless compared to the car Tom Tom units for half the price so I switched to a Garmin unit but the split keyboard makes that so difficult to enter info with the keyboard, I don't think the R&D departments of either company really understand the problems these units cause and I've only toured in UK, France, Italy and Germany. Heaven knows how bad they are in more remote places.
Great review so thanks for the information, You have crammed a lot of info into a short video.
zork I too prefer having a rugged and dedicated Sat Nav as my primary. I use a Garmin Zumo and it has never let me down. I like having the free Lifetime updates. I also like the robust mount, weather proof design, and having all the maps loaded on the device without needing a data connection on the bike. I use my smart phone apps for quick searches and as a backup. I keep the phone dry and safe in my luggage. I’ve watched my friends fumble with their smartphones and I don’t think they work any better on the road. Also, the hardware they are using is not very forgiving in bad weather. Dropping a $800+ smartphone off the bike after hitting a bump at 100km or more is not appealing to me. This happened one of my friends as well. If I had one of the newer bikes with the smartphone pairing/navigation option, I might change my mind.
You may know by now that you can export from Google Maps to the Garmin. Works great. Look for it.
The only problem I’ve had with using my iPhones as SAT navs is that they overheat sometimes and shut off. This has only happened when I’m riding when it’s above 42°C. My Garmin still works.
tried all and best options come with gpxviewer pro...create/download .gpx and .kml files and track recording and many more...was the best for me and simple to use...😉
Hello bro nice video but this question is about a different thing I know you have the BMW trophy helmet I have one too and I installed a communication system but the speakers are so far from my ears can't hear anything looks to me that the place for the speakers are at the wrong place the helmet is so noisy I can't use it is anybody have the same problem?
Calimoto is a good app. It can generate curvy routes automatically if you wish. Great for easy planning of fun routes. Gaia is a hiking outdoors app but good for off-road as there is a large choice of map downloads.
Calimoto was great but once they collected all the data they needed from users they jacked up the price. Unless you are on constant trips I do not believe it is worth the subscription.
I still believe its important or safer to have a Garmin Etrex 35(or similar) touch at least as backup because of the satellite connection.cheers
"satellite connection" means, the GPS receiver? Most mobile phones come with GPS receiver too - why would that make the Etrex safer?
Nice video, thank you for the tips! 505 👍 ;-)
So which one is best when in remote areas? I am often in remote areas with no cell coverage from any network. This is the main reason Ive stuck with conventional GPS unit up to now.
Marc Everard if you want turn by turn, Sygic or Magic Earth. For following a gpx track, OsmAnd, locus, Gaia, or Guru
The problem with Google owned Waze is that it doesn't support multi waypoint planning (only via '1' waypoint). If it ever does offer multi waypoint planning, via Google Maps, all other GPS software are do-do's.
Can you please list the apps as I’m sorry, I don’t normally struggle to understand your accent, but I couldn’t quite pick out what the apps were. Thanks
Maps.me, OsmAnd, Turn by Turn Navigation (BMW, KTM, Triumph), Google Maps, Waze
@@DriveMagRiders I saw it on bottom r/hand off the screen.thanks for the channel.
DriveMag Riders perfect, thank you 😊
...Osmand+ and Locus Map are the best for off road...
You should write the app names down as it's hard to understand you sometimes.
Didn't he do that in the corners?
beebeer54
He has given them in corners of video right.
I wasn’t able to copy Gpx file to OsmAnd app, any suggestions ?
E-mail the track to yourself. When opening the e-mail attachment (tracks) in the phone choose to open with OsmAnd. This is how I do it.
Copy it onto your smartphone, open filemanager and the gpx file with osm
GPX Viewer to vie the gpx files and Relive to save the route after doing it.
Have you tried maps me or iOverlander ?
Navigation app HERE WeGo, its free and you can download maps to your phone and don’t have to spend a lot of data.
Nice sharing
I feel google maps are good enough as long as mobile data is available
Google maps on Honda CRF 1100L😀
Salut
I like Scenic. And Google.
Calimoto is awesome
Brick wallpaper 🤣
1. Google maps
2. Sygic
3. BMW TFT built in app
Sygic maps are very poor, or not very up to date. Speed limits shown on the map often don't correspond with reality, roads show as dead ends while they aren't, many more inconsistencies. I didn't give Sygic a mention in my nav apps list above, because I don't consider it a viable, as in "reliable", choice. Edit: And occasionally, it shows an screen showing one or another "special offer" for purchasing an extension, which can't be disabled - that sucks when nav app is launched automatically by event, while riding: I'd need to stop, removed glove, click away the ad screen and don glove again before I can continue riding with a map display.
OSMand+ is my favorite
The only problem maybe its the cell phone heating.
I'm using CoPilot GPS good app but it kills the battery very quickly. you need to have the phone connected to your power source. iPhone 6+ & App Store.
+1 for CoPilot GPS. Has downloadable maps for use without a wi-fi or cellular connection. Turn by turn directions using the Safety View display is especially useful on a motorcycle.
Calimoto.
Vibrations will kill your camera on your phone
weird. years over years with a phone mounted to the handlebar and ZERO issues. I mean, sice someone invented smartphones.
@@PaoloD2R2 does your phone have ois?
