- Welcome back to my Destiny 2 Reaction series! Today we're reacting to the Season of the Drifter. Why is the Drifter's story so gosh dang sad, dude? I feel bad about how I misjudged his character early on and I think he's far in the running to become my favorite character so far...

The Nine break the Fourth Wall all the time. "Keep playing the game" is a quote that sticks out to me.
That's super fun! I'll keep a lookout for other times they do it because I wasn't entirely sure if they leaving the game comment was an actual 4th wall break haha.
@@terabellum Savathun actually talks about "escaping the game" in a Lore Book called Truth To Power. She seems to know why the Guardian(you, the player) is so special.
Another ghost in the lore also seems to suggest the first Collapse was a way to "Turn off the game"
I’m pretty sure it’s not a wall break but a reference to “the flower game” that the cosmos plays out, the game started by the gardener and winnower. That would make more sense than a game self referencing that it’s a game. Also gambit is a game and the nine like us to play that as well.
I dont remember the specific pieces but apparently there's also Ahamkara lore bits that imply they know they're inside a video game
the emissary does know it's a game yes that is fully intentional
also cayde's friend the drifter is talking about is just the player character that decided against siding with drifter
Lots of lore stuff to go over:
The Drifter used to be known as Dredgen Hope and ran with the Dredgens, lightbearers who found a hive book of sorrow and weapon of sorrow and became basically "dark lightbearers" that followed the philosophies of the hive more than that of humanity (basically they really liked making people hurt). In the cutscene at the beginning, he is actually summoning a taken with a "mote of darkness" which is basically a little nugget of power that he likes to use. The other person was one of the dredgens.
The Nine are basically nine collections of consciousness that can't exist without other beings existence or belief in them. It's a popular theory that each of the nine planets of the solar system (including pluto) each represent one of the nine. One of them cloaked Ghaul's ship in Red War to let them get to Earth undetected.
The two women, feared in 12:40 are Mara Sov and Eris Morn. We later learn in a lore book that they worked together to actually take out a pyramid ship, but Mara basically had to use all of her power and some extra help from Eris just to take out the one.
Drifter was one of the first guardians to be revived. The Dark Ages was basically when guardians first popped up. Warlords were guardians who took whole city settlements for themselves and their posse, sometimes at the extreme cost to the settlement for "protection." The Iron Lords were basically crusaders doing whatever they could to kill off the Warlords. Sometimes at the cost of the settlements they freed. Saladin and one other are both the only Iron Lords alive right now.
The other hero of the red war and friend of cayde is basically them saying other guardians have chosen to side with the Vanguard instead.
In the lore of one of the quests that wasn't shown here, you get the Original Thorn gun, which is quite literally oozing hive madness and darkness. You also get the true lore that Dredgen Yor was actually the original "Man With The Golden Gun" and that he created the legends of the Dredgen Yor to weed out guardians that would be too tempted by darkness to be good guys. It caught up to him though, and he ended up dying, but his ghost revived a kid that he protected and he grew up to become Shin Malphur, hunting down the shadows that killed his hero.
It’s probably not Mara and Eris, it’s Elsie and Eris. The 3 together are meant to be the first to use stasis - Elsie, Eris, Drifter.
The Emissary was talking about the Guardian/Player. There have been instances where the game breaks the 4h wall. From just that "He/She can leave this Game" to Ahamkara directly talking to the Player in the Claws of Ahamkara lore by saying:
"It's suffocating here, this prison. Do us a favor, o bearer ours. Still your mind; invite us to enter the realm of your capricious thoughts. Your mind is vociferous, addled with worry and doubt. We can extinguish these trifles. Would you like that? Yes, we are here. We are not the photons on your screen, or the voice in your head, or the words you read. Shut your eyes-tightly-and you may see us. At least a part of us. Make us real, and in turn we shall reify your thoughts, your dreams." The Ahamkara have the ability to almost directly communicate with Us because they fed our desires for power by letting us use their remains for weapons, armor, etc. Savathûn saw this power and decided to use it to try and reach Us using the "Truth to Power" lore book and The Shattered Throne Dungeon.
I love all the lore tabs about Aunor. She's like the most lawful stupid guardian out there and yet she ends up being Drifter's advocate in the Vanguard and the Praxics because her detective work reveals Drifters plans to her and she realizes it might work.

With Cayde gone and Mara MIA, I think the Drifter might have actually become my new favorite character.
The whole Drifter being dark was the superficial perspectve. Deep down, he is afraid, not out of fear of dying as he has shown he wants an end to this cycle of suffering, but fear of hope and innocence dying as collateral for reasons people around him don't understand. He has the Light, but chooses not to use it, lest his moral principles be lost. He uses the dark because it offers no true promises to him because he knows full well that it corrupts those to weak to control it. Life is a balancing act: sometimes you do good, sometimes evil. To speak and act in absolutes is to lose agency in who you are, which is why he got mad at Orin for wanting to return back to the Traveler's dogma after having been under the employ of Mara Sov. It was during the Red War, when Ghosts lost their charge of light that Orin grew scared of dying and the failing power of her God, the Traveler, that caused her to seek out the Nine, which you see when you watch the vision of her speaking to the Nine and losing her ghost, essentially becoming yet another puppet; it was her fanaticism being shattered to the point of seeking any viable alternative that turned her into what the Drifter hates the most, a being caged by someone else's ideals as now she can not longer think for herself compared to her limited freedom before as a Lightbearer. Drifter and his colleagues all used to operate under the name Dredgen ____, the blank being your callsign/new found name while Dredgen was the first name of a wicked dark titan who slew people during the Dark Age and was Shin Malphur's nemesis; Drifter's name was Dredgen Hope, because he had hoped that Lightbearers of both ends of the spectrum would see the error of their ways, but as you saw, he wanted out, after which he was hunted down by his ex-colleague during the card game intro.. He became The Drifter and started Gambit as a new operation as it was something of his own design... sorta, there is so much more to the story, but that is for another time (soon).
The "one man who went rogue" was dredgen yor he used to be a guardian till he turned to the dark, was basically darth vader/anakin Skywalker, killed the man that took in shin malphur and other guardians, shin malphur killed dredgen yor in return, dredgen yor's real name was Reyzl Azzir
The female Emissary of the Nine was actually a former Titan Guardian.
Not sure if you’ll see this Terra but that Horse in that one cutscene is the most powerful character in the Destiny universe. His name is Starhorse and he was properly introduced in the Bungie 30th Anniversary update. He can quite literally traverse different universes at will. He’s allowed us to have multiple weapons and armor from different Bungie IPs including Halo, Marathon, and Myth.
"They are just another Memory. I don't need anymore of those" is just the best line imo. It really portrays how the Drifter has been through Hell and back and still can't die, always afraid that the peace he has now is going to end at any point, fearing that everyone he cares about dies in his arms. He is traumatised by events long in the past. Both violent, sad and unforgettable. He will never forget what he saw, which he sees as a curse. He sees his life as a life of fear and suffering, not even realising that he can have nice things now that it's mostly over (despite some remnants of the past like Shin) until he meets someone special. I dunno if you are there yet and it's mostly in lore cards, but how the Drifter forms a special relationship with someone is really nice to see, as he desperately deserves it. The other one as well
Without something of purpose, of meaning he was wandering aimlessly, seeing his endless life as a curse. But once he had that purpose, he saw it with different eyes. Slowly, but it is getting there.
So orin used to be a guardian but then went out in search of the nine and became their emissary and pretty much lost all emotion.
I hesitate to say too much about the line about the two women ( im pretty sure i know who they are but not 100% sure ) but there have been lines in the past expansions alluding to them. Upon entering the dreaming city Toland says"this is a place of scheming queens" and upon Rivens death she says "one wish granted deserves another and i cant wait to show you what she wished for" by this time players knew who this person was by reading the lore books but I think it will be cool for you to find out on your own
Lightbearers live indefinitely as long as they have their Ghosts and their connection to the Light.
It's also time you start referring to wielders of the Light as Lightbearers and not always Guardians, just so you get used to it.
The Drifter is such a good character, my favorite too

The Drifter knows too much and it’s one of those characters that you misjudged until you understand him.
Yeah, the Drifter’s a pretty interesting character. If you want to learn a bit about Shin Malphur, there’s a lore book called “Letters from a Renegade” from Season of the Forge; he also talks about Drifter in “A Drifter's Gambit” from Forsaken. Both are eras of Destiny you’ve already reacted to, so you don’t have to worry about spoilers.
Drifter is the literal guardian bro
The nine have a lot of lore and they do like to do 4th wall breaks(although they don't really effect the plot, the ahamkara also do 4th wall breaks).
Also that other guardian he refers to when talking about another hero of the red war and a friend of cayde if I remember is just US the player. (It's been a while so I might be remembering wrong)
the best was that if you stood with the vanguard, every time you were around the Drifter he would call you a Snitch.

Shin wants to kill the drifter and everyone under the shadows if yor, I believe that Dregen Yor killed Shins dad so Shin killed Yor and niw hes after everyone who has been correlated with him.

There is an obscene amount of context that is not in the videos/cutscenes/etc. You have to dig into the Grimoire to get all of the context. It was originally as in-game collectables that you had to hunt down all over the solar system.
The lore around Shin Malphur, Jaren Ward, Dredgen Yor, The Shadows of Yor, Thorn, The Last Word, The Drifter, and (look up this part last) Dredgen Vale are the main context for this story.
Also, you should be aware of the Starhorse, because reasons.
Also Ikora's big-ass shotgun is known as "Invective." It's fully automatic and was a D1 exotic.
To Date: It's never been clarified if it was the PC or Petra executed Uldren, and it's left open so the players can decide for themselves.
