    This video is a compilation of sorts, showcasing the different products that J-Life International offers along with my first impressions and initial experience. The purpose of this video is to provide an honest opinion and as much information as possible for those of you considering switching from a normal mattress/frame bed to a traditional Japanese Shikibuton. I know when I am trying to plan a purchase, especially an expensive one, I go to UA-cam to see what resources are available. There are a lot of videos on the topic of Japanese Shikibuton, but none that focus exclusively on the products that J-Life International sells - so here it is.
    I go over the Shikibuton (futon mattress), the custom mattress cover, the Kakebuton (blanket), the custom blanket cover, the Buckwheat Hull pillow, the neck roll, and the Tatami mats. Combined, you get the full J-Life experience, and it is a relaxing one.
    Hope you enjoy clicking around the video and getting some more information! I am extremely happy since I switched to this sleep system and highly recommend it. No assembly required, no nuts and bolts, move your bed around in seconds if you want to, fold it away during the day to open up space. The benefits are plentiful.
    Like and subscribe if you like music, backpacking, and odd product reviews, lol. Comment with any thoughts or questions and I will answer them all!
    See you next time!

    Hey everyone. Just wanted to stick an affiliate link here - jlifeinternational.com/?rfsn=4799779.e2fd4d
    If this video was helpful to you and your next stop happens to be jumping over to the Jlife website to check it our for yourself ... it would be SUPER RAD of you to get to their website by clicking the link above, then go about your browsing and buying as normal. No difference in your experience on the site, or the prices that you see - it just shows Jlife that there was a purchase made because of this video, and I make a few dollars on stuff you would be buying anyways. Pretty futuristic and a cool opportunity if you ask me! Gotta have those side hustles nowadays.. :) Thanks for understanding - I sincerely appreciate the support!!

    The mats are meant for airflow, to let the matress breathe. The cotton stuffing is susceptible to molding if not aired out regularly, the mats are just to help alleviate that.

      Right on, thanks Joey. I can see how that definitely helps to prevent the onset of mold along with laying the futon out in the sun. Thanks for checking out the video!

    I agree I live in the French Quarter, New Orleans in a 170 year old 300 sq/ft apartment. My living space is only 10x13 with a brick fireplace in it. I only have the cot size from J-Life and the tatami mat(had it for 2+ years) but it’s definitely a necessity living in a place that small. At least in my opinion. However I found you definitely start a ritual cleaning every night before you go to bed and one when you wake up. Definitely helps start your day. Cold shower, make up/put away bed, have coffee in the courtyard.

      @Snuggle Bunny: I am with you regarding wasting money on mattresses. I am DONE and OVER with spending a ridiculous amount of money on a mattress, which in my opinion, does not benefit our Backs and Spine. In my opinion, the mattresses we sleep on here in the U.S. does more harm to our bodies in the long run than we know. I really look forward to getting a Japanese mattress to sleep on.

      @@SFM1123 I bought this whole setup and I've had it for about 3 weeks now. It's great! Of course, I would say...if you are someone who has NEVER slept on the floor before...you would probably want to do that first. Also, you should get the 4" and the proper tatami mats to go with it, IMHO. I have had to sleep on the floor for over a year due to a car accident. So, the transition was a slow one for me to the futon, as I couldn't have gone from car accident to futon. Either way I hope you get what's healthiest for your body and your sleep health!

    Hubby was born in Mexico. I am a NY girl of Italian background. We are not Japanese...but have been sleeping "Asian style' for decades. And love it. Not a hint of back trouble, ever. It is a simpler, neater, far more cozy way to restfully slumber each night. I cannot say enough about this type of bed. In fact: whenever we drive to visit my mother in law, who lives a few hours away, we may stay late, so we get a motel room for the night once our family time is over. And guess what? In conventional motel beds? Hubby and I wake up exhausted, miserable... and sore.

    Thanks so much for making this video, it's by far the most informative and definitely the best video I could find on UA-cam about futons. I do just have one question remaining, which is that do you think a tatami mat is necessary? One thing I like about the futon is that it can be nicely rolled up and put away, so having a tatami mat kind of defeats that purpose. Could I just lay the futon straight on carpet, or floorboards?

      @willpopemusic  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks for the question, Nico! When the mattress gets worn in (after a few months of using it everynight) you will notice the areas of most pressure (hip area for me) get matted down a little more than the rest. Do I feel it?
      on the tatami mats - nope. Super comfy for me
      on carpet - nope, feels great
      directly on hardwood - yep, I can feel the floor with my hipbones when I side sleep.
      Believe it or not, I sleep most nights directly on the hardwood and I'm used to it. As long as you use a tatami mat or sleep in a carpeted room, you won't have to worry. Thanks for checking out the video!

    Great video thank you! You have the mulberry silk duvet, how warm is it? I had own the silk duvet once but it had strange cool feel and I was cold most nights. I switched to wool (winter quality) and use it all year round. The temperature in my bedroom could fall to 10deg Celsius in winter, that is why I switched to wool. I also got myself a woollen futon which seems very comfortable but due to thickness (15cm) is very heavy and not easy to air. (Can't fold it either) I think the idea of raised beds was to keep them on higher levels where the air was warmer. So question is will the cotton set be warm enough for cool and drafty Scottish properties? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    • @willpopemusic
      @willpopemusic  2 роки тому

      Lucy, thanks so much for the question and I'm glad the video gave you some helpful information! The silk duvet with the cover is warm enough year round for me, but my house doesn't go below 18C. I totally understand why you went with a wool option. My question.. do you think you could use a combination of both?? The silk duvet will not be warm enough on its own.. I say anything below 18C and you might start to feel a little chilly. Now, throw a wool blanket over the top and you would definitely be warm down to 10. Interesting factoid about raised beds.. I can totally understand why someone would do that, since heats obviously rises.. warmer than the floor..
      I think you would really love the silk duvet (its truly amazing), but layering would definitely come into play during colder nights. Hope that helps, thanks for checking out the video!

      Thanks for writing, Michael - I appreciate you checking out the video! In my opinion, I think lumps and thicker/thinner spots is inevitable. I had them when I first got the futon, and I still have them now. Sometimes I try to punch or smack the cotton around, or even grab a corner of the futon while it's on the ground and give it some hefty shakes. Can't tell if it works or not. I think my futon is fully expanded at this point (I'm at about 6 months). Yep, I'm sure that queen size is a bear to get out in the sun and prop up on something so it won't get dirty. I can understand why you have been avoiding that! Maybe the sun will help, I'm not sure.. I imagine over time, the cotton will always be shifting. Try to rotate and/or flip the futon every week or two and sleep on different sides. Take care brother!

      Good question. I'm a side sleeper like you and find this shikibuton to be plenty padded for me. If you are concerned about it, I recommend going with the 4" version and include the Tatami mats. I feel like there is also a little adjustment period with anything new. It can take a bit of time for your body to get used to sleeping on a different surface. When I first started backpacking, I would wake up very stiff because of the thin sleeping pad (plus lugging around all that gear), but now I sleep on a 1/2" foam pad directly on the ground and it doesn't bother me at all. Good luck, hope you enjoy it you end up giving it another shot!!

    Do you still like this? Also-
    1. How do you feel it would be for a petite side sleeper?

    3. Did you get the regular 4" inch, or the 3" super firm?

    • @willpopemusic
      @willpopemusic  3 роки тому +2

      Yep, still love it! I don't think I'll be going back to a normal western bed/mattress for a long time. I actually just got a 2nd shikibuton from Jlife that is smaller. I'll do a 6 month follow up review soon.
      1. I think these shikibutons are great for anyone, but especially smaller people under 6'3" or so. I am also a side sleeper and have had no issues with any sleeping position. If your futon develops a thinner area/valley where your hips go, you can smack it with your hand and fluff it up.
      2. I don't think this would be a good fit as a topper. It is a little too thick and you would probably sink down in it, especially over time. It's just not designed for that. The good thing is there are definitely other toppers that you can buy that are specifically made for using with a mattress.
      3. I wen with the 3" super firm version. I personally like a more compact sleeping surface and prefer it to be on the firmer side.
      Hope that helps! Grab some blankets and make a little bed on the carpet. Give it a shot for a couple nights and see how you feel about it. Good luck and enjoy your weekend!

      Yep - it's super easy to maintain and it leaves you with a lot of flexibility and space - I dig it... as for sunning the futon, I think you could do it either way, but it would be more effective with the cover off. Maybe sun the futon each time you are washing the cover.. Just be careful not to sun the futon under a tree with birds hanging out in it, if you know what I mean. You can't wash the futon itself. • @willpopemusic
      @willpopemusic  2 роки тому +1

      Good question! I would expect some overlap of the blanket, but keep in mind you can support the futon with a tatami platform that is large enough for the blanket. Like, a twin futon with 2x European full tatami would make an awesome setup and it would keep the blanket edges off the floor. Without the tatami, the excess will be there, but the edges of the blanket would just be on the ground to each side of you. I don't think it will hurt it at all. After all, without the tatami, you are basically sleeping on the floor, so the blanket would be there too. One last note, when the mass of your body fills the blanket, it will not truly be 71" wide, it'll be a little bit less. Good luck in your research!

Wait 30-60 minutes, then mist it with water from a spray bottle to try and blot up excess bleach. Just be sure not to let the cotton filling get saturated with water. That will lead to mildew. Yep, I understand what you mean since the tatami mats cannot fold and essentially occupy that space semi-permanently. it is preferable to have a room that you would consider the tatami room. The cool part is that you can still use the tatami mats while the futon is folded and out of the way. Sometimes I meditate, other times I have a tea session in there. It's also a great room that gets a lot of sunlight that I enjoy reading in. The mats are too heavy to move each day, it's just not sustainable to move them. I hear you though. The big space saver is my living room. I often sleep on the floor out there on weekends - falling asleep to movies or playing video games late night. Since I don't use the tatami mats out there, I truly can fold the futon and move it to the side - which opens up that space. I guess it's all about the way the space is perceived. What a western person calls a bedroom, you can view as a tatami room, which is multi purpose. A quiet space where you can enjoy peace and tranquility. Hope that helps give you some ideas, thanks for the great comment!
      One thing I do want to add though.. in the event that you do need that space for something - it takes all but 2 minutes for a single person to pick up the mats and prop them to the side. Try doing that with a big bed frame! I just don't recommend doing it everyday - too much work. Take care!

    Love this review! V helpful, I have been looking for a through review for jlife futon so this was wonderful. For anyone who is considering shikibuton, make sure to air it and your kakebuton out at least once weekly, ideally on a sunny day, for most of the day. Hang it outside with good air circulation. It helps prevent dust mites, mold, and bacteria. Futon maintenance is v important to the longevity of your futon! Also if you have tatami, make sure to remove your futon from them fully every day so they can air out. Sweep and wipe with a soft dry cloth with the grain of the weave about 1x a day. It helps remove excess moisture and keeps its oils evenly distributed.

      Emily, thank you for the comment and for mentioning the importance of taking care of your futon and tatami mats! There is definitely some special consideration that comes with owning these products and always good to hear. When you unbox your shikubuton, Jlife provides a paper that has detailed instructions on how to care for it, basically a carbon copy of what you suggest. A good thing to keep on hand to refer to. on a scale of 1-10, how firm is this? I can't decide between this one or another shiki with foam insert. I'd prefer on the more firm side as im using this with a wooden futon

    • @willpopemusic
      @willpopemusic  3 роки тому +2

      Personally, I give the firmness a 7/10. Since I'm used to sleeping on the ground on camping trips, the 3" super firm was actually more plush than I expected but I think is totally fair to label it super firm when considered in the bedding category. I think most people would probably consider it very firm (8 or 9 out of 10), as compared to a soft, large mattress. Hope that helps. I really do think the firmness can be interpreted differently depending on the person. I think it's a perfect balance.

      Hey David! One would think that a high humidity environment with no space to sun it would be a no-go, but I live in Ohio which is pretty humid most of the time and I confess to never sunning the futon.. mine is fine and doesn't have any funk to it. I don't recommend never sunning it since you're supposed to and I plan to do it soon to try to change my habit. To answer your question, I don't think it's a dealbreaker. Obviously avoid getting it wet and fold it regularly during the day. Sometimes if the sun is coming through the window really strong, I'll just lay it in the sunny patch. So if I were to get the 4” twin shikifuon, do you have any idea if I would need two tatami mats?

    • @willpopemusic
      @willpopemusic  3 роки тому +1

      Hey, Olivia - great question. From what I am seeing, a standard Tatami mat is 35" wide, and the twin size shikibuton is 39" wide. Just one mat would be too small. They also make another size mat called the cot mat (under the European full section on their website) that is 27.5" wide. I have 2 of those cot Tatami and put them together to make a 55" wide mat for my full size shikibuton.
      What I would recommend is getting 2 of the cot size like I have (for a total of 55" wide), then you will have a little overlap of the tatami under the twin shikibuton (about 8" on each side). I really like the way that looks, personally.. another thing I definitely recommend is emailing their customer service directly at info@jlifeinternational.com to double check. I love having the mats and think they are a great addition to the setup. Worth the investment.. take care!

    • @willpopemusic
      @willpopemusic  3 роки тому +1

      Great question. Putting the cover on the futon is not easy! Well... It was actually pretty easy with the cot size (my new, smaller futon) but my full size is a beast. Im sure you've put on a fitted sheet by yourself before? It's kind of like that haha. My best advice.. take your time. I inch in the corners little by little, then switch over to the other side. It's not a fast process by any means, but it works. Once it's in there, I give it a wave-like fluff and zip it up! Hope that helps. I don't think there's an exact science to it. Just be gentle and take your time. Thanks for checking out the video!

      Look on UA-cam for how to put on a duvet cover. There is an easy method where you lay the duvet cover inside out on top if the comforter . Then you roll them up together to make “burrito.” Then as you unroll it, you tuck the duvet into the cover pulling the cover top over. It’s hard to describe, but it unrolls with the duvet inside the cover. Look for a video. You gotta see it to get what I’m taking about. It’s a game changer.

    Quick question -- Could the shikibuton fold longways? I am in a small room and want to use a full-sized shikibuton as a single sleeper for half the time, so that when I fold it, I will be folding it down the middle into a narrow bed. Would the material/fabric accommodate this style of folding?

    • @willpopemusic
      @willpopemusic  3 роки тому

      Hey Domenic. I have the full size - tried out the fold longways and it definitely worked. It's a lot more padded that way too - good idea, never thought to try that. I think it will work just fine in the way that you're describing. Keep in mind though that the width is only 27" when folded in half, so it's pretty narrow. If you don't fidget around too much in your sleep, then you'll be fine! Hope that helps, take care!

      One last question -- how would the futon manage if you folded it longways and then used one half as a sort of back cushion, like a traditional futon or couch. Would it flop over, or would it stay firm against the wall? This could be a good way to divide it unevenly so that there's more sleeping room.
