The engine is really repairable, if the pison has a hole in it, OK new piston & maybe conrod. If the cylinder is scored - put a new liner in - they are wet slip fit liners, so easy to replace when stripping the whole engine down. Admittedly the later liners are Aluminium with nickasil coating, but that can be redone if necessary. earlier engines are cast iron liners and just need a hone usually, unless something really nasty has happened. Generally speaking though, you are not going to have a shagged block, which is good! I repaired the 907 engine in my eclat (same basic engine, slightly smaller swept volume), I had major probs as my crank was ~70 thou out of true (if I remember correctly) and it had cooked 2-3 of the main bearings melting the bearing metal and squeezing it out of the end float. Needless to say, my conrods were cooked, 2 of them were blued they had got so hot... I replaced crank/conrods/pistons, though the pistons were probably OK, with everything balanced - ran like a champ afterwards.

Brings back memories of being 17-18 and S2/S1’s. Normal working position was on ones knees in back!!! And getting used to using mirrors. Patience is key. Most times these engines don’t play well when belt breaks. Great video.
Good luck guys, been there, done that in an old Lotus Sunbeam. It had the 907 variant engine which did exactly the same to the belt. I did the head myself but what an absolute pain getting the clearances set. No hydraulic tappets here I'm afraid and to make things worse, it's a shim under bucket engine so assuming the 910 has the same set up, whom ever does the work for you is going to earn their money.
I bought my first motor bike from a garage in the UK that was also a lotus dealership, there were always a number of Esprit’s and then Elise’s over the years, often went back to have a look and dream. Great video 👍
Nice! Keeping the engine is the best decision. Swapping is a great thing but became a bit too common. I am really looking forward to see this Lotus on the road again and also the fun watching you make it happen.
A million years ago in the 1990s, my Fiat X1/9 broke it's timing belt on Brixton High Street and valves met pistons. My best friend dragged it back to Croydon with his company Astra, and I took the head off in the street outside my house. After removing the bent valves, checking the valve guides carefully with an expensive Mk.1 eyeball, the new valves were lapped in by hand with the head balanced on top of the cooker (how my house-mates loved me!). Head back on (maybe even with a new gasket - I don't remember, but my torque wrench got its 1st outing) and timing belt "fitted" carefully, it kinda started up. Enough to get it to the garage where they sorted out the 10 degrees+ out mess I had made. The car ran as well as any X1/9 for years, until it went the way of all 1970s Fiats and simply dissolved. Watching this slightly more sophisticated project is great and brings back memories of scuffed knuckles and back-ache. Please don't drop a new engine in (unless you have a flat plane Lotus V8 sitting around the shop), it's so much more fun to fix it back to original. LOTUS: Loads Of Trouble, Usually Serious. I love the fact that you guys are keeping the original engine and I'mso glad the engine is coming out. It couldn't have been easy working on it this way. Also, considering the strength and reputation of the transmission, please tell me you're doing something about it? Gearbox rebuild with toughened gears maybe? From what I hear, Quaife offers an upgrade for the Renault UN1 with an LSD, better 1st and 2nd gear ratios and quicker shifting. It also apparently accepts a newer and (much more easily available) gear fluid.
