i was playing trash and was just trying to get a few wins and i decided to look at this video. i started playing as the slayer/skirmisher and it went so well thank you
I usually tend to flip back and forth between skirmisher/slayer on my own, and my teammates I regularly play with are good at helping boost that further, its really fun. ^-^
I'm a casual player who mains Ttek, and based on this, I believe I play utility most of the time, with me focusing on painting, doing the objective, throwing bombs and inkstrikes, and occasionally fighting. Even now that I'm trying out Nautilus a bit, I probably mostly play utility. Great video!
Went from being a 5star inkbrush main to 5star heavy splatling main. I’ve got 4 stars in several other weapons, but nothing even remotely compares to playing heavy splatling. I only ever solo queue (does playing with my bf every now and then even count as a group?) and it can be pretty difficult sometimes. I’ve learned to play pretty aggressive as one too, but being the last line of defense for my team is pretty great. With that being said, not having a backliner makes such a huge impact. It’s an honor to be the anchor of my teams 🫡
for various reasons I don't play Splatoon 3 anymore, but back in Splatoon 2 I was absolutely a Utility/Anchor most of the time, which is probably not considered ideal when I mained Kensa Splat Roller and Octobrush Nouveau, but I found a ton of success especially with the latter. Man I wish Octobrush Nouveau was in Splatoon 3, I could probably deal with my many issues with that game if it just had a comfy kit like that.
The new octobrush kit i feel like is pretty good for utility actually! It has squid beakon and ink storm, so u can get splatted team members into safer positions and take a little bit of control on the map remotely. Im trying to get 5 stars on it, its one of my favorite brushes
I need some insight from fellow Splatoon players!!! I have been casually playing the Splatoon series since the first game came out, and have improved significantly in my skill over time. However, I do find myself wondering if I’m filling the right role at times. I’m quite flexible in terms of which roles I fill between various modes, so here’s what I typically find myself doing in Splatoon 3… Splat Zones: Anchor (Hydra Splatling) Tower Control: Skirmisher/Slayer (Neo Splash-o-matic) Rainmaker: Utility (Forge Splatershot Pro) Clam Blitz: Utility (Ink Brush) Do any of you (especially Coach Cookie) have any suggestions on how to better execute my roles in these ways, what weapons might be better for the job in each of these modes, or which role might be better to try with such weapons? Mistakes that I regularly make are usually due to my desire to push too much on the other team, which leaves me vulnerable sometimes.
Like Cookie already said, the roles you are playing are dependant on your situation, thus changing throughout the game. Another factor that didn’t get mentioned is your own playstyle which includes, but is not limited to, tendencies, thought processes, patterns and general characteristics that are individual and unique for each player. So the roles you play also depend on said playstyle, that has to be determined beforehand in order to figure out, what roles suit you best dependent on generalised situations. Take the hydra for example, it‘s long range and high suppressing capabilities pair well with an anchor heavy role, however in some situations it might be most optimal to engage fights with your special, or even your range and the hydras natural suppression itself. Said suppressing capabilities can also be utilised to safely push forward through the zone in a way that no slayer or skirmisher could, essentially creating a clear path for the rest of your team to advance. In a different example you can also utilise the wiper as a semi effective skirmisher or a slayer, due to it’s fast movement capabilities and it’s advantage over ledges and rough terrain. All that however, like previously mentioned, depends on situations and playstyles and not just those of you, but rather your and the enemy team as a whole. It‘s a fluid dynamic and if you want to find what works best for you, you‘ll have to take those factors into account. If you want to, I can also help you figure out those factors and their optimal conclusions, as I am a retired splatoon coach myself and I wouldn‘t mind helping out. Lmk if that helped and if you wanna take up on my offer. Other than that have a great gaming expierence!
@@lM4R10l Thanks for the insight! I actually started using the Ink Brush for Clam Blitz instead, and found it to be mush more effective because of its ability to charge straight to the goal faster than any other weapon could ever allow for. It works great when I at least have a decent team to back me up, but as you know, it’s not as good for holding back the enemy as something like the Splatana Wiper or NZap is. When it come to the Hydra Splatling, I think I just need some advice on how to keep opponents from charging up on me faster than I can do anything about, because I seem to be very effective in most all other areas with it. Of course, any and all advise is welcome though. I actually used to detest using it in Splatoon 2, but I love it in Splatoon 3 because of it now having the Boyah Bomb special and seemingly better hidden stats that play to its strengths. As for the Forge Splatershot Pro, I feel pretty solid in most ways with it too, while I just need to keep getting better with knowing how to address some enemy confrontations. Getting out of a tight spot can be pretty tricky with this weapon at times. Finally, I think the Neo Spash-o-matic and Ink Brush are perhaps the weapons that I am most on the fence about, but I have definitely improved with the Neo Splash-o-matic over the past month! I have learned how to much more effectively confront enemies and approach the tower with it, and gained a better understanding of just how much territorial mobility I need to make sure I have to work with when using it. Regarding my play style, I find myself being fairly aggressive, but I’ve learned how to not blindly charge in as much as I used to before having my team ready to back me up. My style will obviously change somewhat when using the Hydra because of the type of weapon that it is, but I am still always trying to gun down enemies as much as reasonably possible without trying to get myself killed. Any suggestions on how to use these four weapons attacking, defending, and fulfilling the respective ranked battle objective? Also, do you have any good alternative weapons that I can try in their respective modes? I would like to have a secondary option to fall back on in case using my primary choice is not going well. Right now, I just use what I know I’m good enough with and apply well to whatever mode I’m in to try something different when things are going wrong, battle after battle. I don’t know if this matters to you at all, but if you want to know my skill level, here’s a bit of current perspective… I’ve beaten every single level in Octo Expansion, having received every full colored mem cake, as well as conquered inner Agent 3 to get the golden toothpick. I went back to fight Agent 3 again recently, and it’s still the hardest Splatoon fight in my life!😅 In Splatoon 3, I have beaten every Alterna level, maxed out my agent gear, and beat After Alterna. I am currently on A+ rank in Splatoon 3, but did briefly make it to S rank at the end of the summer season. I got booted back down to A rank before I had time to do much of anything in S rank though (very annoying).🤦🏻♂ Sorry, I know that was a lot, and thanks again for responding!😄 You can write as much as you want about any coaching insights and details, and I’ll be sure to read it when I get around to it. I was always looking for a term to describe slosher and splat roller and skirmisher makes perfect sense I always going to every match thinking how can I just be as annoying as possible for the other team and just applying constant pressure with slosher is like my go-to
I kinda do stealth where I just don't start inking anything until I get to the enemy teams base (in turf war). I the cover their base in ink and come back from behind as a surprise attack. 👍😁
Cjr main here! This video was suuuuper helpful! As I've been playing cjr, over noticed that I've been way to aggressive with it and this seriously helped!
I'm a tri-stringer main and trying to be an anchor with that weapon is hard, but not impossible. Out of all the other charger-like weapons it's better at covering ink, but it's range is shorter then a charger, so you'll usually be forced into closer fight. Because of this I usually play more like a utility player, mostly inking, throwing toxic mists etc. Obviously like you said you often need to change play styles with utility, which you're usually forced into due to the closer range fights.
If anyone else plays big swig i would suggest being a utility due to the high paint ability and slow ink consumption then switch to skirmish when needed due to the long range vertical flick and ink vac!
As a S-Blast queen, I alternate between skirmish and anchor play styles. My brother is a brush main so my game revolves around attacking and supporting his kills.
ive only been playing spaltoon for like... 5ish months now, im slowly branching off into different wepon types so far my mains are 52 and carbon deco, i picked up dapple daulies nov and i love playing with them. this was probably the only video that helped me undersatnd the differnce between skim and slayer. i think i need to work on acting an anchor more when needed, i dont do this role (intentonally at least) because i suck at hanguing back and waiting as worry im not doing good for the team. i do hang around in ink and look to see whats going on and where is safe or wear to attack though. sorry for the mini paragaph lol. tldr you're video was very helpful!
I’m a charger (Usually E-liters or Swiffers) main and I actually act like an anchor. I’ve done it no matter what. I always retreat if the team isn’t all together or dead. I do keep sniping though and I usually get super jump spot medal / badge for the round. I have a few multiplayer rounds where people always super jump to me. I usually run to a nearby team mate if I’m in trouble since they can usually take care of the guy on me. Would love to find people who are trying to reach a high rank that know what they’re doing! Half the time the team just rushes forward while I’m back.
There's something I've been thinking about with this system, Roles are suppose to be fluid but since Anchor is the most important position what can they switch into? Sure you can position more aggressivly after a successful fight but you'd still remain the Anchor.
This is a really great question! The answer is that weapons that specialise in anchoring (chargers, splatlings, etc) are way less likely to shift *out* of the playstyle than other weapons are to shift *into* it. This doesn't make the Anchor playstyle any less fluid -- someone should be anchoring at all times, so teammates will shift into it when necessary -- but "anchor weapons" are called that for a reason. They're super insanely good at anchoring, but to a fault... they have trouble doing anything else. Some weapons like Ballpoint Splatling can actually skirmish and slay pretty well, which is one reason why it's very good competitively. But of course, no E-Liter is gonna push up and fish for fights. They'll anchor, and if they go down (which they should try not to), their teammates will cover them. Fluidity! (Ironically, this makes chargers some of the only weapons you *could* fit into a neat little box. But of course, everything's still situational. Sometimes you gotta help in a pivotal fight, or kill the Rainmaker before they get the lead in Overtime. You mostly play patient, but sometimes you gotta get desperate. Up to you to make that decision.) Thank you very much for your question!
Chargers are designed to be anchor weapons at their core, but some of them are ideal for hybrid roles. You won't find an E-liter pushing forward, but a squiffer has quick enough charge time that it can push (it also has to play forward more because it's shorter range). Goo tuber is actually a great weapon for painting with the tap shots, so it does support well. And bamboozlers... are great at... bamboozling? (I don't know what bamboozlers are good for...)
@@kylebayliff9360 I wouldn't call Squiffer and Goo Tuber Anchors but Bamboozler plays at medium to long ranges. It's a similar playstyle to Rapid Blaster and Stringer where you're playing midline rather than backline to hit a specific range, They lack reliable damage so need teamates to protect and combo with them but their positon allows control of any fight. They aren't able to defend on their own like a true Anchor, Stringer is able to stall for a while through explosions but otherwise isn't consistent at longer range.
Oftentimes you'll even swap between slayer and skirmisher during a single fight. As Gem from @SquidSchool put it, as soon as the enemy starts shooting at you, you become the skirmisher.
I play stamper so I'm a skirmisher/slayer mostly, I anchor when team fights go bad and I play really aggro because a lot of the time soloq slayers don't understand sticking together so I just do the work for them
FINALLY, someone that makes an actually informtative video instead of "let me talk about blah-blah while video just shows a random gameplay so i can confuse my viewers by making them think i'm informative by reading a script but also too lazy to actually edit a video to show visuals that compliment my vocals". It's like they failed show&tell
I'm an Aerospray main, and I definitely am a utility player. I have a kit that can use 2 fizzys at any time, Aerospray is one of the best painting weapons, and I certainly change roles often.
The game mode I'm the best at id splat zones. I like to keep my distances and paint with a long range weapon. I often have an inkstorm so I might be more of a utility player
I honestly didn’t know that there were different play styles. After watching this, I think I’m both a slayer and a skirmisher as a tri slosher main. Which I feel like makes sence, not entirely sure.
I learned almost nothing. What I did learn is that by these definitions I've had slayer and skirmisher swapped/misnamed for years... which is all too fitting. Good vid =)
This makes soo much sense. I main Dynamo roller, which would be utility? It feels like it does a bit of support and such. Also Flingza, and finally kraken roller which is definitely slayer for sure. This video was helpful, thx
Dynamo plays like an anchor that has support capability. It does paint well when the RNG favors it but it's a bit better at making sure at threatening any area it controls.
As a Brush Main, I didn’t really see any Brushes on the list (At least I don’t think, might have skipped over it) For me, Brushes are a Skirmisher / Slayer Hybrid. Brushes are Fast, Fast Hitting, and Have Very Strong Killpower, with a drawback of Poor Range and So-So painting. I’ll be using Octobrush as an example here, since it’s what I play the most. Octobrushes have a good amount of Range, while not having a slow startup like Painbrush does. They can easily run in and get kills, and Brushes EXCEL at Sharking, as once your in a Brushes range, your basically already dead (Unless your a Roller) The problem with Brushes is that they aren’t good at surviving and keeping themselves safe. Brushes are offensive weapons, and their poor painting power makes it hard to make a getaway. Overall, if your a brush Player, PLAY AGGRO, but also GET AWAY when you can. You want to conserve your special and life as much as possible so you can get kills to help your team.
im trying to become better at the tri-stringer currently and its going well I'd say with being an anchor, only issue is im losing the slayer playstyle i had with my carbon, splattershot and tri-slosher rapidly 😭
I feel like Tenta brella is a safe like... Utility Skirmisher*. Corrected. I suppose yeah, I'm working alongside my team on objv and I'm not thriving on the super backline, with the midrange brella I use.
I'd like to think that splat roller is also a secure skirmisher that can easily swap roles with anyone
Tbh its kinda hard for splat roller to support or anchor... but ig?

man I love Splatoon
this honestly helped me understand my role with the hydra and annaki nova
alot more. thanks a bunch!
playing bamboo in solo queue is a serious exercise in teammates demanding every role from you at every moment.
ive never played splatoon in my life, but your guides are lovely to watch. you're a natural. you might be the thing that convinces me to pick up a copy, and dip my toes into console shooters.
I've learned so many new things!
I've been following the scene since early 2018, even the japanese scene as I can speak the language, and this video was exceptionally great. I wanna play now!
one of the best explanations of team roles. I really liked the positive vibe of the video :) thank you for sharing this.
Cookie, I've got beef. Your videos are the most helpful to me, yet you only have four. More videos, please. Your way of explaining things is really helpful.
This helps a lot, as a Octobrush main, I guess I’d play Slayer, but I also play some Inkbrush, which *has* to play Slayer.
Omg this was so helpful, I'm a splat charger main trying to learn e liter and I loved this video!! Thank u!!!
i was playing trash and was just trying to get a few wins and i decided to look at this video. i started playing as the slayer/skirmisher and it went so well thank you
As someone who plays anchor/slayer(e-liter) I really appreciate the new e-liter that came out since it perfectly fits my playstyle😏
This helped soooo much with helping my new team understand their roles and priorites!
This video was incredibly helpful and unnecessarily motivational. Thanks!
Good video cookie i now understand that even thow theres 4 main roles i understand that any of each roles can take in different ways 😊
Hi, I usally take on a Skirmisher (ish) roll (dualies main), and Anchors; I love you. All of you, you’re my favourites.
In additional reply thanks for making this video it’s worth mentioning in the roles of the game and how would players can adapt in every situation.
This video helped me realize that I've been playing as a skirmisher without realizing it. Thanks
It’s an honor to be the anchor of my teams 🫡
im a five star inkbrush main... perhaps this is my calling.
for various reasons I don't play Splatoon 3 anymore, but back in Splatoon 2 I was absolutely a Utility/Anchor most of the time, which is probably not considered ideal when I mained Kensa Splat Roller and Octobrush Nouveau, but I found a ton of success especially with the latter. Man I wish Octobrush Nouveau was in Splatoon 3, I could probably deal with my many issues with that game if it just had a comfy kit like that.
man do i have some good news for you LMAO (it's not the same kit though unfortunately)
The new octobrush kit i feel like is pretty good for utility actually! It has squid beakon and ink storm, so u can get splatted team members into safer positions and take a little bit of control on the map remotely. Im trying to get 5 stars on it, its one of my favorite brushes
@@abigailbaxter9082 yeah i love it too!! i just didn't want to get their hopes up about it being the same kit
I need some insight from fellow Splatoon players!!!
I have been casually playing the Splatoon series since the first game came out, and have improved significantly in my skill over time. However, I do find myself wondering if I’m filling the right role at times. I’m quite flexible in terms of which roles I fill between various modes, so here’s what I typically find myself doing in Splatoon 3…
Splat Zones: Anchor (Hydra Splatling)
Tower Control: Skirmisher/Slayer (Neo Splash-o-matic)
Rainmaker: Utility (Forge Splatershot Pro)
Clam Blitz: Utility (Ink Brush)
Do any of you (especially Coach Cookie) have any suggestions on how to better execute my roles in these ways, what weapons might be better for the job in each of these modes, or which role might be better to try with such weapons?
I went back to fight Agent 3 again recently, and it’s still the hardest Splatoon fight in my life!😅
In Splatoon 3, I have beaten every Alterna level, maxed out my agent gear, and beat After Alterna. I am currently on A+ rank in Splatoon 3, but did briefly make it to S rank at the end of the summer season. I got booted back down to A rank before I had time to do much of anything in S rank though (very annoying).🤦🏻♂
Sorry, I know that was a lot, and thanks again for responding!😄 You can write as much as you want about any coaching insights and details, and I’ll be sure to read it when I get around to it. I might be pretty delayed to respond to UA-cam comments at times, but I’ll see what you said at some point or another.
@@Daddy_Boog
All this information is great and I can definitly give you quite some tips, recommendations and insights about the weapons you are playing and potential new ones that would fit your playstyle well.
Do you have a Discord so we don't have to communicate through UA-cam comments, because the information I might give you, can be very lengthy and just some general communication wouldn't hurt as well.
@@lM4R10l Sorry, I didn’t mean to ghost you on this, but I’ve had so much going on in life at the moment, and Splatoon has sort of fallen onto the back burner. I’ve got a response that I was writing, so I’ll try my best to get back to you at some point within the next week. I’m still interested in what you are saying though!
@@Daddy_Boog
It's alright, don't worry about it.
Prioratize your life and you can get back to me whenever you feel like it.
Thanks for the advice, I will probably completely forget all of this but subconciously use some of this advice without realising. Or maybe thats just because i learn best by just doing the thing until i can do said thing effectively.
The amount of time's I've been the anchor as a Sploosh in Turf War is concerning 😅 great video! I'll keep this in mind as I try new weapons!
I’d love a video about roles on salmon run. Because I notice it best when I just go ham with some weapons instead of focusing on eggs
another W tutorial by cookie!!!
gotta use this advice to beat São Tomé next Crimcup eh
As a S-Blast queen, I alternate between skirmish and anchor play styles. My brother is a brush main so my game revolves around attacking and supporting his kills.
"Good players win 1v1s, great players 2v1 good players(the greats being the 2), and I win 4v1s"(me being the 1) -Blad
ive only been playing spaltoon for like...
Up to you to make that decision.)
Thank you very much for your question!
They aren't able to defend on their own like a true Anchor, Stringer is able to stall for a while through explosions but otherwise isn't consistent at longer range.
the aerosprays sound kind of perfect for the utility role
Oftentimes you'll even swap between slayer and skirmisher during a single fight. As Gem from @SquidSchool put it, as soon as the enemy starts shooting at you, you become the skirmisher.
I think of myself as a utility/skirmish tent player. Just being there to protect teammates and keeping them in fights longer.
As a Dualie Squelcher main it’s a bit eye opening to see one playing so aggressively when I usually play more passive and anchor-ish
“This entire game is fluid”
I mean, you ARE correct
As an newer inkbrush player, I agree we dont fall under any tier. Lol Maybe utility for vanilla kit bomb spam. And high paint
I play stamper so I'm a skirmisher/slayer mostly, I anchor when team fights go bad and I play really aggro because a lot of the time soloq slayers don't understand sticking together so I just do the work for them
Dude the xenoblade music at 2:20 caught me offguard
FINALLY, someone that makes an actually informtative video instead of "let me talk about blah-blah while video just shows a random gameplay so i can confuse my viewers by making them think i'm informative by reading a script but also too lazy to actually edit a video to show visuals that compliment my vocals". It's like they failed show&tell
I'm an Aerospray main, and I definitely am a utility player. I have a kit that can use 2 fizzys at any time, Aerospray is one of the best painting weapons, and I certainly change roles often.
Scottfalco would like to have a word with you.
i main h3
my role is to slam 3 shots in a row into anything that moves
So your saying:
Step one: Find friends
Step two: Get good
Step threee: Pick a role
Step ones kinda impossible tho
Huh, it feels like my usage of Inkbrush could fall more into Utility than it does pure Skirmisher or Slayer...I like that ^^
I fucking LOVE skirmishing as Nautilus.
The game mode I'm the best at id splat zones. I like to keep my distances and paint with a long range weapon. I often have an inkstorm so I might be more of a utility player
I never let go of my 4 star hero shot replica:)
I honestly didn’t know that there were different play styles. After watching this, I think I’m both a slayer and a skirmisher as a tri slosher main. Which I feel like makes sence, not entirely sure.
I'm definitely a Skirmisher. I run in on the Front lines to keep the opponent back while still worrying about my own life.
I play splatling edit mostly as utility/anchor cuz of the charge time Its hard to play as skirmisher but I definitely still have the damage to kill
me holding right trigger and walking forward with the splat roller
i nickname the splattershot as. “smash bros inkling role” since you’ll be aggressive and defensive half the time for every match
Oh cool, thanks for the tip.
So much good information here. Thank you for the video. 😊

13:02 heh "fluid" I get it
I mostly pkay skirmisher weapons like squeezer, splatana stamper/ wiper and tetras.
"Good players win 1v1s, great players win 2v1s"
Me clutching a 3v1: *WHAT AM IIIIIII?!?!*
a mechanically strong player facing against stupid opponents, that’s what
or you’re a tetra that could happen too
@@asianclicks3368 I'm a splattershot pro
"Good players win 1v1s, great players win 2v1s."
"Amazing players win 3v1s, and 4v1 winners are ProChara."
I learned almost nothing.
What I did learn is that by these definitions I've had slayer and skirmisher swapped/misnamed for years...
which is all too fitting.
Good vid =)
Local AND Aussie. Inkcredible.
2:06 lag kill LOL
This video is so good for me
This makes soo much sense.
As a Brush Main, I didn’t really see any Brushes on the list (At least I don’t think, might have skipped over it)
For me, Brushes are a Skirmisher / Slayer Hybrid.
They can easily run in and get kills, and Brushes EXCEL at Sharking, as once your in a Brushes range, your basically already dead (Unless your a Roller)
The problem with Brushes is that they aren’t good at surviving and keeping themselves safe. Brushes are offensive weapons, and their poor painting power makes it hard to make a getaway.
Overall, if your a brush Player, PLAY AGGRO, but also GET AWAY when you can. You want to conserve your special and life as much as possible so you can get kills to help your team.
Bro thank you so much for this video
Don’t listen to what the hail I say I’m C- I play ranked casually for the modes, splat zones works great with charger
I’m usually an anchor switch to slayer player sometimes
Very helpful
Your description of the utility role really makes me miss foil flingza roller as a support/roller main
video went hard
Vanilla tri slosher. And I play slayer but commonly fall into skrimer
im trying to become better at the tri-stringer currently and its going well I'd say with being an anchor, only issue is im losing the slayer playstyle i had with my carbon, splattershot and tri-slosher rapidly 😭
Oi, where bambo ;-;
great video
I’m a breed of splatoon player that is indecisive and can’t find a weapon because I just can’t stick with a good pool of weapons
TIL I am a Slayer/Anchor, which is good because I main Octoshot
Great video :)
im still not good at the game but this was a super useful vid despite that!
I feel like Tenta brella is a safe like... Utility Skirmisher*.
Corrected. I suppose yeah, I'm working alongside my team on objv and I'm not thriving on the super backline, with the midrange brella I use.
