How To Catch Bass When Its HOT! (Its Easy)

  • Its HOT!!! Let's go fishing! If you know where to look you can catch a ton of Summer time bass despite the heat! Matt demonstrates where bass go on hot days, catches a bunch of them along the way, and gives critical tips on how their movements change as the sun moves overhead and the mercury rises. If you're tired of struggling this Summer and want to know how to power fish your way to success, this is for you!
Summer success is all about targeting shadows. Of course you can pull up to a run of docks and find fish underneath, but are there other shadows you should be targeting? Today Matt targets a variety of shadows you're probably overlooking. As the sun shifts across the sky the shadows come and go but if you know where to look, you'll find hungry bass lurking.
The key to success today was a combination of topwater and flipping/punching with creature baits. Matt was constantly adapting to get the maximum number of bites. He chose a popping frog over a traditional shape to maximize his time in the waning morning shadows. Next he adapted his creature bait selection to avoid short strikes.
All of the baits used in today's video are broken down below. We've also included links to Tim's dock video, as well as the rods/reels Matt was using. We've even included a budget combo that can be used for frogging AND flipping. The links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Almost all of my fish over 8lbs have come in the middle of the day and during the summer (that’s a Florida summer) the ratio mid day big to small bass goes up. It help that I love hot weather and feel more comfortable at 90 degrees than I do at 70 degrees... and I’m cold at 65.

Hey Matt, Ever get out to Folsom Lake in the summer? For those of you that don't know it's mainly a rock lake. No grass, no weeds/reeds/vegetation, right now there are few trees in the water (most are dead providing little to no shade that are in water), only docks on the lake and you can't fish them, lake at 50% capacity and dropping every day with the water at 10+ visibility. I've tried first light fishing shallow with top water and swimbaits, went deeper to (25-35ft) ledges and rock piles with dropshots, jigs, spoons and the bass are just gone. Finding tons of baitfish in the 20-30ft range but not picking up any fish around them. Tried finding bigger rocks providing shade but not having much luck. Went to the steeper walls/ledges with access to deep water close and nothing. Up until August I was getting limits of 12-14lbs and now nothing...Any tips anyone's got to try I'm open to. Tight lines guys. Love the videos and the channel.

I’ve noticed on the dog days that bass’s metabolism is highly predictable. I fished a lot of city ponds that had little to no shade during the hot part of the day so after a quick feeding frenzy in the morning the bite would slow almost to a halt. But within a 30 minute window around 2 O’clock there would be a noticeable uptick in activity and bites would come frequently.

What's everyones favorite? The bite? The Hook set? Or the fight? There's nothing like that feeling of being a little lulled to sleep and then feeling that bump on a Jig. That sudden expectation of the unknown. The feeling that you tricked a bass into biting with your technique and lure choice. Or getting hammered on a frog or buzzbait! AMAZING! But man, setting that hook on a Donkey is like nothing else. When you're not sure if the fish took the bait, and then you hook set that sucker like you're trying to hit a baseball 400 feet and the rod loads up and you're like "OHHHH HELL YEA, I"VE GOT THIS ONE BUTTONED!!!!" Then again, having a two minute fight with a pissed off 5 pound Smally doesn't suck either! Aint Bass fishin' fun!?!?!

I literally just tie on my confidence jig and start covering water. Its the only bait I can throw for hours and still believe the next cast is the one.

So, I have a cabin on a lake booked for the weekend of September 18th. I'm relatively new to bass fishing as I've lived near salt water for most of my life. There will be a new moon on the Saturday of my trip and I've been trying to find info on bass fishing new moons. You have a video on new moons but you mostly talk about night fishing and I don't think I can be on this lake at night(state park rules). I'll probably fish for catfish from the dock at night. I was wondering if you had any tips for fishing a new moon and fishing September in general. I know you guys are moving and might be busy, but there's a new moon coming up in a few days. Maybe you could make a video on this... just sayin:) The lake is filled with cypress and tupelo trees in 8-16 feet of water.

Finesse and topwater. The frogs are out so topwater is a given and finesse to just cover area, let the lure sink and give them a shot for reaction strikes

Austin Buring for your first mid to high level combo I would 100% suggest a 7-7’3 medium heavy fast action rod and a reel with 7.3-8.3 gear ratio. I have a few, but my most expensive combo is a Phenix feather rod, with a shimano slx dc. When you get into more expensive and lighter rods you notice a huge difference.
