Interesting video! When I see blurbs on a book, I tend to think about what publishers are trying to do. I think I need to think more directly about what kind of blurbs are most appealing to me and why.
I assume a lots of people are, I do not know if I can count myself into this category, fashion victims; or victims of fashionable pronounciations of English. There are some theories how it should be pronounced, because some cultures appearantly do not understand English and pronounciation of some syllables, and some uneducated theories may look seductive as an appeal to make English more understandable and more approachable and appealing to foreigners who have language learning problems or biases about UK, and England i particular. (I do assume by learning English people do make it simplified and mentally assume and identify UK as England, or land of English speaking people.) After a long study, and trials and errors, this is not true. They could understand perfectly if they placed more effort in listening skills and took more time to study, which is proven fact after talking with and analyzing arguments of people who do not understand English pronounciation or have claims it is difficult to understand. It is hard to expect to understand speakers on beginning of B1.1, but I do not blame them, they are not familiar with language learning standards at all, or have different cultural expectations (in some cultures and in some social circles, appearantly, people yell at each other all the time and cannot understand nothing but a form of yelling style, so to say. It is definitely a prejudice, or feeling of self-fullfilment for some speakers who consider as sexy, having loud yelling voice, so slower speaking style they do consider ill, which is untrue even in their own native language, however, for them it is truth. Weird but true.) It took me some time to understand there is nothing wrong with my language or pronounciation skills, it is really, and 200% proven problem with the listeners. There are probably some exceptions to it, considering speakers who have completely different grammar and pronounciation rules, but my argument is valid. With effort, patience, and time spent, other language can be learned ans understood, indeed.
I do dissagree about French philosophers. They do have great works, and better not forget how they did shape the world and help creating something which is known as Western civilization. Their writing style is maybe a bit unapproachable or requires more practice to get familiar to it, and yes, it is completely nerv-wrecking from times to times, but French are simply brilliant in some areas and definitely not to be cast aside or underrated. It is so undisputable, I do find it hard to believe I am writing these words. I do not know the spelling of his name in English, but he had brilliant works. It does sound like an ode to France, and it may sound lame, in a way it is a hommage to their valuable contributions to development of world.
Well, blurbs can be different in some cases, maybe, to make classics or percieved hard-readings more popular to younger audiences, but it really depends on a subject and demands, and lot of factors. Some ideas and comments about blurbs are great. Thank you
