WOW! What great vocals and guitar playing. What a great band! Mark's songs are timeless. Thank you for posting. Made my heart yearn for those good old days! Peace, Sal 💪🏻🎸
Mark Farner is Grand Funk Railroad. His vocals, his guitar work and the music. Don and Mel black balled Mark and today their version of GFR is nothing more than a "Copy Band" with the name. I bought "On Time" when I was in High School and have been a fan since. I own their entire catalog either on album or 8 track (which I still have). GFR was a "Kick Ass" soulful rock trio back in the day. Their concert were sell outs and phenomenal. ( If you can find their double set live album pick it up. It will make you a believer. Me and buddies drove hours to see Grand Funk Railroad in Buffalo, New York... but when we arrived, there was a sign on the door saying the show had been canceled. It was a real bummer... especially since the opening act was an up and coming band called... Led Zeppelin!
I don't know if you'll see this. In 1969, Grand Funk came to Cleveland, Ohio warming up for Led Zeppelin. I love Led Zeppelin, but GFR gave them a run for the money. In other words, GFR was amazing amazing and energetic! I was so lucky to see both bands together when I was 18 years old!
@ralphsguitar I did see your post. That's about the same time as I went to the show that was canceled. My memory may be playing tricks on me, and flipped the order of the bands playing. But I know I went to see Grand Funk Railroad...and later learned the other act was an unfamiliar-to-me group called Led Zeppelin.
On that (almost) tour Grand Funk blew LED Zeppelin off the stage. LED Zeppelin refused to play with Grand Funk after that. There is an interview with Farner about it on YT if you can find it.
Farner got to be one of the best blues rock artists out there, vocals are piercing, bluesy and on point, songs are damn good and catchy, this is the kind of rock n' roll party I'd be in. And that lookwise, Farner could easily be one of those lead actors of action movies in the '80s with that mullet. '80s Mel Gibson-esque action movies. 😂 Oh, one more, that bass player really killed it, backboning the groove really well. Damn good.
I bought closer to home, the red album, grand funk live, the cave man album forgot the name of that one, this was starting in 1969, I had been playing guitar since around 1964, but Mark Farner was my single biggest influence. I still don’t know what strange guitar he played, I think it was metal. From marks lead playing I learned the 1970 version of shreadding, hammer on pull off, and much more.
