- Landscape photography is a beautiful thing, but sometimes it can be hard to get creative and find images and compositions that you're happy with. I was out with my Canon 5D MKIV, I had misty conditions which is perfect for photography, but I could not make any images. I was frustrated and ready to call it a day until I changed one thing: I took my camera out of the bag and kept it in my hand. Honestly, the difference this made was incredible.

In the initial audio of the other hikers, you could hear one of them singing "Dueling Banjos" from Deliverance, that out creeps a photographer in the woods any day! "AINTREE....?!?! This here river don't go to no Aintree."
It´s not the joy, that comes with a good photo. It´s the good photo, that comes with the joy.
Tom you should get a capture clip so you can always have the camera out without holding it. To remove it you just have to push a pin and then slide it off. Well worth the money!

Something we should all do, walk around with camera in hand, it really works as you demonstrated in this film. Lovely images btw.
Photo backpacks are great for hauling a load of gear over distance while protecting the gear from the elements. It does not make for easy access to the gear; it does not support spontaneity and in-fact acts as an inhibitor to image making, in my my experience. It also means that you must put your bag down on the wet ground or sand (at the ocean edge) to retrieve gear - not the best of ideas. Years ago, I adopted a belt system to carry lenses, filters, accessories around my waist and a "holster" style bag slung over one shoulder to carry the camera body with one lens attached. The other shoulder held the tripod. The belt system made my gear much more accessible in the field and I did find myself making more shots. The major vendors all have belt systems in their product ranges (ThinkTank, Lowepro, Kinesis Gear (a small shop in Utah that is my favored brand). Give one of those systems a try and see what they do for you Thomas.
The trees in the first image look like they're dancing. They absolutely compliment each other. Just beautiful.

Don’t forget, under current rules, you can go where you like if this is your main income. If you can’t work from home, and you can’t do landscape photography in your lounge, you’re allowed to go anywhere.
I find the shots set up/framed for the cinematography much nicer than the finished photos, although they are nice too.
Never feel sorry for photographing a subject more than once; It can tell the full story.
You should make your 2021 calendar with 12 pictures of The Tree! 🌳 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳
That knot in the tree that looks like an eye looks like the eye of a whale. Reminds me of "the voyage home " star trek :)

Please do not apologise for shooting the same tree multiple times on different trips. I am not a regular viewer to be entertained, but to learn to see what you see in your final composition and how you got to it.
I think 3:2 trees picture is much better than the single tree square frame. The more I look, the more I'm confident that 3:2 frame works well in this particular landscape.

8:04 The first shot of the trees is just amazing. I love how the tree in the background mirrors the tree in the foreground. And the wonderful patterns created by the branches. Almost an abstract image. Great shot Thomas.
Canon 5D Mark 4 really is a great camera. It’s like the perfect all rounder.

Always something so peaceful about your videos! Never that stressful, beauitful sceneries, a sense of adventure and most of all an inspiration! You inspired me to get up before sunrise the other day, plan my location and timings etc and capture the rolling fog and sunrise. And that has equally inspired some of my friends and instagram followers to do the same. Keep up the cracking work mate, stay safe and stay awesome!
I too photograph a subject multiple times in different lighting conditions and moods. You appreciate the subject and consider it an old and reliable friend. I liked the idea about changing Aspect Ratios on location to capture the different images.
This a perfect encapsulation of your mindset sometimes doesn't allow you to see the forest from the trees. Great photos as usual Thomas.
Hi Thomas - we had our first snow fall today and I popped out with the camera thinking about some trees I've scouted several times. However, when I got there I just could not get any shots!! I continued walking and then came back the same route only to discover better light and a couple of shots 'appeared' that I had walked past earlier. They've turned out great and it just goes to show that you should focus on enjoying the walk in these circumstances and then re-focus. Thanks
You remind me of myself in 2020: wandering around the same old patch of woods searching for a composition. Sometimes, like you, I get frustrated, but mostly it's just nice to be out in the woods.
You might find it useful to learn how to read surface pressure charts. That way you can predict the weather yourself - Its easier than what you would think. Love you vids Tom!

dont worry about returning to same tree... I have one on my playa which I use as foreground interest ... and is great to keep returning to .. it helps anchor you... over time you see changes in both the tree and you..
I liked the curved tree trunk, it did look like an animal from a distance. Then there is the square shot of the pine tree. I would have walked right by the tree and would not have seen an image. I felt your shot turned out quite well.
It's so encouraging to see someone push through and find good compositions when most of us would give up. Also thanks for showing how real encounters in the woods with strangers can and do happen. What has been your worst experience with people in the woods while shooting?

When I reflect on seeing a composition, invariably my first shot turns out to be my favourite. I can then spend time, faffing around, altering settings, adding filters whatever etc. Carrying the camera in-hand is a good callout which I can only agree with
Seeing the changes in that tree over only a few weeks was great! Where I live in Australia things don’t change much from season to season so I love seeing the more dynamic seasons around the world. The middle shot is my favourite, with the few leaves still dotted around. I’m glad you got your camera out to wander around with. It’s something I always do as I’m too lazy and otherwise I’d just hardly take a photo! 😄
Great video with lovely images. You just had to photograph your lovely tree with its 'eye'. This great little tree is the gift that just keeps on giving.
Lol, so many things I could relate to in this video. I had the exact same experience probably about the same morning as you. The first hour or so was frustrating despite perfect conditions, but then it got much better - and that creepy photographer part was hilarious :)
Enjoyed the video. The creepy photographer comment reminded me of one afternoon at a park this fall. This park had a cluster of miniature trees of sorts that don't really go that far off the ground but rather spread sideways, and their foliage was very vibrant and still quite full. I was standing close looking at one of them for maybe half a minute when I suddenly realized that it had a person with a camera under it trying to shoot the sun coming through the leaves. As I walked further, I confirmed that every single tree in the cluster had its own photographer under it trying to shoot exactly the same thing. One of them glanced at my own camera and he looked ready to wrestle for his territory, if need be, so I gave him his space.

Your book has just arrived here is foggy Luxembourg, I only got a quick flick through it before my wife grabbed it off me and put in the Xmas present pile🙄🙄 but it looks great. Looking forward to having a more in-depth peruse on Xmas day evening with a glass of lagavulin once the madness of the day has subsided.
i like the met office for weather, but i use the observations maps to predict whats going to happen as the prediction ones can be a bit off, its about getting used to what has happened and learning to follow weather patterns.
i recently been using some vintage Takumar lenses like the 55mm 1.8 on my canon eos, really great lenses to use, also some of the jupiter lenses are great too.
I think you need one more visit to the tree, this time place a camera in the Y of the trunk looking back at you photographing it from the path you did today, then you have an image from the tree's point of view.
Great channel Thomas just found you and subscribed , tree with the mist is like a scene from Lord of Rings middle Earth .Fences are a pain but where there is a fence will be a great shot .Before Lockdown i went to race tracks in the uk to shoot cars .So battleing with fences is a regaular thing for me .Iam very new to landscape photography because of the Covid 19. I decided to take it up .
I now have a tripod, but its a lot harder than you guys make it look .I will persit with it . Top work

I do portrait landscapes all the time. There are images that really work best shot in portrait.
In this case vertical didn't work because it introduced the sky, which was too bright for my liking. But yes, it's always worth considering.

For some time most of my favourites landscape photographs were shot in portrait orientation. Now I really rarely shot I portrait orientation - I mainly shot 3:2 and 16:9 and also beginning to appreciate square format. It just keeps changing
My ideal format is square. The idea being to frame the picture around the subject regardless of the arbitrary sensor shape.
Have had the weather where you think its going to be perfect for three days and all three days went flat and got nothing. Then yesterday sun and fog set up just so and made for such a lovely morning. Persistence to us all and Good Wishes,

About not being able to travel very far - I hear you! Having said that, it's still nice to explore locally. I suppose if you keep going back to familiar places you start to notice things more. Cyclists, horse riders, dog walkers, hikers.... they were everywhere at the weekend, so everyone must be eager to get out.
Thomas, I find it interesting, compelling even, that you shoot some great images with the Hasselblad having a limited amount of exposures. Then shy away from making an image with your digital camera. I wonder if there is some deep lying reason for this, as I find myself doing the same…😊

Lovely peaceful vid - love being out on days like that. Glad you were happy to leave the foreground bracken out of focus in that second shot and didn't feel the need to focus stack etc - not every shot needs to be sharp front to back!!😁

Glad it's not just me that can go out and just be uninspired and frustrated. Having camera in hand makes a big difference though, lens cap off too!
I appreciate your usual style of just a couple shots for any trip but I don't do that. I always have my camera out to get tests and experiments and therefore many shots for any scene. I like this change of pace from you.
Your videos are great; not many photographers I'm perfectly happy watching not getting the shot.
I like the square image a lot. Especially when I looked around the composition and found another layer of trees inside the mist. It was satisfying and surprising. Great work as always.

I enjoy all your location videos and like seeing repeat subjects - your tryptych? shows how that works. Also I often find that just getting the camera out and taking pictures starts the process of finding more & better ones. I also think that your influence has rubbed off - I have taken more square pictures this year than ever before. Thanks.
Great point on carrying the cam in hand, I'm a firm believer in this idea for any walkabout. I was hoping you would take that shot at 4:47-4:50 and you did!
