My water pump went at 34k. MkVI 2011. Thanks for all your posts. You are so helpful.
sorry to hear that, although it's a common issue. hope you get it back soon with all fix done. Thanks for sharing this with rest of us, will keep an eye on coolant lvl.
Wow thanks for the heads up, I have a 14 Wolfsburg edition GTI, And I surely will keep eye on this.
I got mine fixed and didnt even take my moods off. I got it fixed about 2 years ago and till this date working nice.
I've got a 2011 with 45k miles and I've gone through three water pumps. =\ Thanks also for all the videos. They've been quite helpful, especially now that I am out of warranty!
Good to know because I have a 2011 mk 6 and mine just went out completely
Thanks for the heads up. I am at 10k and will keep close eye on that. There are many cars to chose from, I really like the vw Gti
hi guys i am also driving a polo gti 2013 i replaced a water pump at the dealer now its leaking again. why is this cars having a pump problem?
I'm finding that this is a common problem. I had my '13 GTI for 20 months and 9,000 miles and the water pump took a dump too. As you can see by the miles I have put on it I don't drive it that often. Started as a slow leak and progressed to a bigger leak within 24 hours, just like in the video. If you see a leak get it fixed asap because it will get a lot worse in a very short period of time.
I hope VW will extend the warranty on these coolant pumps beyond the 60K drivetrain warranty.
I have a 2012 VW CC 2.0T running on 46K miles, and i recently started having a mild coolant leak somewhere. It takes about 2-3 days of moderate driving to run the coolant reservoir liquid down to the bottom of the tank. Not too too bad, but I took it to get checked over at a local mechanic shop, they estimated $620 for the part replacement + labor work. According to them, it's the water pump that needs to be replaced. I haven't agreed to the repair yet, trying to see if my car warranty covers the cost for this part first since the water pump does fall under the drive-train VW warranty, If I'm not mistaken. The waterpump part itself goes for about $70. and $180 for the entire pump assembly. These being aftermarket. I think OEM full assembly goes for $280 or so.
+Joshua Luzuriaga try and get a warranty first of course.
i have volkswagen jetta 2011 72,000 never have a problem , sorry about your car hope they fix it God bless you
Just dropped my 2013 off today for this (20K miles). Pumps are on back order in my area but they were able to snag one from Audi since it's the exact same. My poor baby :(
I owned a 2007 GTI MK5 , for the first 50,000 miles I loved it ! All of the scheduled service was done by the book by the dealership, Nothing but the best for my baby, then it turned on me, first the A/C when out on me at the beach in 95 degree weather, had to replace the complete system at a cost of $1,800, then I started having engine problems. To make a long story short, if you buy a new one trade it before you hit 50,000 because VW does not care about their customers. Also I contacted VW of America when my A/C blew up to see if they would cover some of the cost of the parts. The customer service manager acted as if I was robbing VW by asking them for some of the parts cost, she did offer a free oil change.
I will never ever own another VW product !!!!
I have a 2007 vw gti. Love the car but it started to give me problem now. Cv boot issue, AC is not working now. Recently I found out coolant is leaking. Assuming its water pump leakage. This car is really expensive to maintain.
Currently having the same issue on my 2010 gti. The coolant light came on a few days ago and I topped it off. About a week later I checked it and I needed to top off the reservoir again. Is there a way to know if it’s the water pump that needs to be replaced? Ever had the issue come back?
it clogs from time to time but never goes away until you get the waterpump done.
I have a gti mk7. After 8 months my coolant level dropped to the minimum line exactly. I went to the dealer and they filled up the coolant above the max line. Is that fine? and do you think I have a coolant leak?
Thanks
+Yousuf Al-Habsi possibly it could have slowly dropped to that level over 8 months. but if that happened in a day or two, you have a problem waiting to happen.
is there a way to access the windshield water pump without having to remove the front bumper?
maybe. but removing the fender liner front section, or even the flap under the fog lights.
My 2012 GTI Autobahn just got its water pump replaced by the dealership the 2nd time this week. Unreal....I thought it would have been fixed the first time they replaced it. (43K miles now)
is it possible that all the coolant could leak out from the water pump? I knew I had a leak when i left for a trip. i came back and all my coolant is on the ground.
+Bigchuck678 yes. that is when your waterpump is dead. don't drive your car..
Okay so I’ve this weird situation if you don’t mine helping me with! I drive in very bumpy roads and my car suddenly started leaking coolant, I drove it home without it overheating, checked the tank and it was completely empty. I parked it for 3 days and it kept leaking, I now added about 500ml of water into the expansion tank and it stayed for a minute but then it drained out completely all at once with the car off, I see it dripping out one drop every 3 seconds under the car but there is no way for me to remove the undertray/splash guard (because of neighborhood restrictions). I tried to inspect it from the engine bay and all I see is some dried up coolant and nothing new (i.e. the new water that has disappeared) could this be a leaking water pump or a hose? I too have a 2013 VW GTI
has to be water pump. very common on the mk6.
Came back to this video as my 2012 GTI is slowly losing some coolant...no puddles, but like you said, I think it's only a matter of time until my pump craps out. How fast were you losing coolant until this more serious failure?
very slow. one day it might dump, but usually its slow.
I was driving, did a pull them it leaked it all out and started steaming bad, you think the water pump failed or a hose just blew?
no, a hose didnt pop.. the waterpump, or more likely the thermostat housing coupler.. failed.
hi, i have a golf 1.4 tsi and right now its on the garage for maintenance and also in order to change water pump.
between scheduled maintenance i noticed that the oil level get down about 0.5-1 liters is that normal ?
not "normal" but happens a lot i hear
I noticed that the oil level get down only in the 2 weeks before maintenance
was it a simple water pump replace as every garage quote I am getting they are saying the Timing belt HAS to be done at the same time? (I am getting rid of the car in about 6 months so don't care about the timing belt)
yes.. it kinda does. i mean the water pump pulley is run by the timing belt. and its not saving much money at all cuz it all has to come apart anyway. any good shop will tell you the same thing. you should also replace the tensioner while you are in there btw. 6 months is a while.. you dont want it to go bad while YOU have it at least..
My water pump failed on my 2013 Skoda Octavia Vrs Tdi. Only 33k miles on the clock. I lost coolant very slowly also and it was only when I was having the cam belt and water pump replaced that you could see that the water pump was deteriorating.
bummer
For the mk6 there was a recall on the water pumps
yes..
exactly similar case to mine.. gonna change it tomorrow.
bummer
Meowgemok hey bud I’m having the same issue
Can u please help me
I would just call the dealer and tell them you are aware that a rental is covered in the 3/36 for warranty repairs that take more than a day.
My car is at the dealer getting its 4th water pump right now (in 42k miles). Might as well add it to the routine maintenance list along with oil changes.
4th!! DANG!
you should check out the lemon law. I believe its 3x for the same problem and its considered a lemon.
christian pereira
not in my state (too many miles on car). It may qualify under federal warranty laws...
that sucks i have the same car
I love the car, but they need to figure it out.
I need to find a mod friendly dealer in the bay area. Do they say anything about your mods?
jscricca Fairfield VW maybe 👍😂😂😂
why jack it up to see if it leaking when your not going to fix it. let the shop do it your wasting your time. there's a recall for your waterpump now. they improved the material it's made of.
Hello. I've got a mk6 GTI that has a coolant light going off. My temp stays at 190° and it's SEEMS to only leak while sitting. I can't spot where it's leaking from for the life if me. I put more coolant in yesterday before driving and when I got on the road from work today, the coolant light came on again. Does this sound like a water pump issue? Thanks in advance.
yes. it leaks so slow it burns off and never hits the ground.
Oh great. Thanks for the heads up. Once again, you've saved me. lol
oh day, it might dump all at once and then your stuck on the side of the road. get it checked soon.
Yeah. Took it in this morning. Can't wait for the $700 bill from my local shop. Wishing I would've done it myself but I'm tied up this whole weekend. :(
That blows thanks for the advice ahead of time gonna change my water pump every 80k miles and put extra gasket maker on there to make sure it don't leak
Shit like this is across all brands as 'engineer polymers" like PA-GF66 are being used for water pumps, oil pans, valve covers, inlet manifolds etc.
i replaced mine with an aluminum one at 95k. did a carbon clean at 110k and now the aluminum pump is puking.
My MK6 has had its first water pump go out at 90k got new one done at dealership, one week later that one took a dump, and now at 98k it has taken a third dump, totally new pump every time, VW needs to make these out of something different than cheap as plastic. Crazy 3 water pumps before 100k! the struggle is real, and its sad because I still and will forever drive gti's.
MK1 owner and MK6 owner out...
I know this is late as hell but there's aftermarket full metal pumps
@@mousab9 I'm on my 2nd metal waterpump now and guess why I'm here again? It's leaking AGAIN
@@RadioKilla180 I haven't had any issues with my one just make sure you buy a high quality one and don't opt for a cheap one tbh I forgot the brand I installed in my car but I haven't had any leaks for over 3 years
@@RadioKilla180 the quality of the rubber gaskets are usually to blame
@@mousab9 I got the Usp metal one, but actually the leak is coming from the radiator not the waterpump. I'm grateful it's not the waterpump again
Just a "coincidence" huh that every vehicle your wife has touched in the last week has broken down huh? ;) All kidding aside, sorry to hear about your issue. Been kind of a long week for you when it comes to cars. But yeah the GTI has a few all too common reliability issues. (Hopefully the MK7 willf fix some of those.) At least yours is covered under warranty. Hopefully they will have you back in your normal turbocharged driver's seat in a day or two. I bought the TDI version to avoid all of the GTI little foibles, but I am still waiting to see if they can figure out where that stupid rattling noise is coming from.
I just had this issue about 2weeks ago. The water pump job is pretty much guaranteed covered under warranty.
i expect it to be. i would create quite the ruckus worldwide if they tried to deny my water pump replacement due to my unitronic intake. cuz they probably know i am tuned as soon as they drive it and see how incredibly fast it is.
I just had the same problem!
cool
My sister has a 2012 CC with 106,000 miles. She has a coolant leak. How much do u think it is to replace? We are replacing the coolant at least 2 times a day. Thank u
im sure a waterpump replacement is 300-400 minimum at the dealer
Nope Volkswagen are charging minimun 1.000 dollars
What was the problem? I was same issue.
hmm
I have a 2015 Mk7 Gti, now on my 4th waterpump in 24 months.
I'm pretty much now turned off VW and Audi. Thought I would upgrade to a S3 even though my last auto had oil issues and eventually blew the turbo. Still had faith. But now....yeah no. Best thing you can buy is a cheap Toyota.
bummer
I have a vw cc 2012 had a leak change the pump. Now a month and half later it’s leaking again almost empty. Smh
And i took it a shop i been going for over ten yrs. I hope they didn’t rip me off. I have120k miles on it.
bummer
I found this video because my 2013 GLI just started dumping bad. Im about to jack it up and see what it is.
bummer!
If the leak is behind the radiator the chance is most likely the water pump. My P71 is beginning to leak from time to time its a small leak so I am not worrying about it right away but will replace the pump it only costs around 2 to 300 bucks to replace anywho, if you cannot afford to replace it right away just top it up with water every couple weeks until you have the money to replace it or do it yourself but I am lazy and don't have the tools so gonna replace it after next paycheck. I keep my cooling system filled with just distilled water in the meantime then will just have 50/50 coolant after the pump is replaced.
Aspie Otaku cool
+Aspie Otaku you know how important coolant is right? you know that it prevents not just from freezing but also from boiling?! Water alone is not entirely adequate to keep the system cool. coolant protect's against corrosion too.
+Aspie Otaku Should mix that distilled water with antifreeze. You can get VW/Audi certified quart bottles on Amazon for a decent price. Filling your reservoir with just water will slowly make the issue worst at high or low temperatures.
Anyways, i have a 2012 VW CC 2.0T, starting leaking mildly about a week ago, it mild leaks so I'm not too worried about it. As i continue to refill the reservoir with mixed coolant I have been looking for a solution. A local mechanic said the work plus part will cost $620 which seems like too much. I will follow up with the dealership as the waterpump falls under drive-train warranty if I am not mistaken. That could mean a free part replacemet for me.
That sucks your dealer doesn't have free loaner cars. What's that thing on the dash?
Hertz shitty navigation unit. And yeah, the dealer should be giving a car or paying for the rental.
Is it the auxiliary pump?
maybe
@@LastHumansGarage You do not know? shit! I thought you were a mechanic.
I bought a mark 6 2.0 TDI golf 6 days ago. I have the same problem. Within 2 days of driving it, the Coolant symbol started to pulse on my dashboard, I filled the coolant to the max the next day and it's near empty again. Only tonight I realised its leaking, plus on the dashboard the coolant symbol was pulsing again:( so I'm getting it fixed next week:(
+Vintage Yu-gi-oh that sucks
Do you found the problem @CVC´s ??????????????
Greeting for you from Iraq❤❤❤❤
thank you my friend
I wish you were my neighbor lol
LastHumansGarage This is scaring me I bought a used 12 gti at 29k miles I'm going in for the damn 30k tomorrow ...water pump intake man and coils will soon rise as a issue right ? ...not to mention expensive DSG every 20k miles?
long as its under warranty and hasnt ever been modded you're fine.
LastHumansGarage I'm sort of a rookie I scheduled tomorrow for the routine 30k.and they said something about a special and 27pt ins...and costing around 360...does that sound right ?...am I worrying to much...I have 2 year 24k warranty it's used
130k, 2011!! Not a problem to this day :D knock on wood!
***** one of the very lucky ones.
Coolant flush???
06 is almost 10 years ago that's the reason I mention it!
I have a 2015 polo GTI, same problem. Really irritating....
every car has its issues
The Water Pump on my 2013 blew at 7K miles. The dealer gave me a loaner. It's part of the warranty. Not sure why you had to pay for yours. BTW, the 2014 Altima's are nice. They do have a CVT which is different until you get used to them. Great gas mileage for such a large car.
any webpage or proof about that "part of the warranty"? over a dozen people have told me the rental should be paid for, and i wont be settling until it is.
***** If it is a warranty repair that is over night, the car is included. I believe it was in the warranty information that was provided when I purchased the car. When I took mine in, it wasn't even a point I had to worry about, so I didn't look it up. If you want a fast answer, tweet to VW corporate, they are super fast with their responses.
Don Thorvund i dont tweet, any other way?
***** found it!! "9. Does Volkswagen provide a loaner vehicle while my vehicle is in for repairs?
Loaner coverage is part of the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period valid for 4 years or 80,000 km, whichever occurs first. This coverage includes rental provision for warranty-related car-down situations that cannot be repaired the same day."
***** opps.. that is a canada site..
Rubbish components in these cars = dealer profits $$$
I had 2013 VW GTI with ODO 20,000 mls and got this problem. Got new OEM waterpump for $220 and replaced by myself.
dang! nice one! i wouldnt do that job, i heard its tough
olmuscreate did it require any special tools?
VW decided that the very best thing to do to try to improve there reliability reputation was to use plastic water pumps....... any human being with a basic knowledge of how cars work would tell you that's not a good idea. If VW thinks plastic water pumps are a good idea imagine what else they can come up with.
Has VW issued any fix for this problem? TSB or something of that sort? Could they fix it with a different gasket or fastener? Hasn't somebody in the aftermarket hasn't come up with something? Sorry, that's a lot of questions!
I brought my golf to valvoline and they fucked up my water pump.. for a week straight I was wondering why my coolant would be gone every other day. So now I gotta take my car to the vw dealership
dude even the VW techs can have issues with that. i would never trust a cheap oil change shop.
LastHumansGarage Yeah I learned my lesson never bringing it back there!
i have almost 30K on my 2012. I think I am one of the lucky ones to NOT have a leak yet...
going to jinx myself right now, but im at 76k on my 2010 with no problem so, i guess lucky me?
the same in my car
k
You shouldn't be paying for a rental. That's crap. Dealer should have given you a car. I'm on my 3rd water pump and always got a free rental even for the half a day it takes to replace. And to one of the comments - the warranty on this should be the 60k miles. At 45k you should still be in warranty.
I'm on my 4th water pump and just died as well. +LastHumansGarage
dang 4?? do you have a mk6 generation? i wonder if itds any better on the mk7.
evaporates before it hits the ground lmao
hmmmmm
Don't fucking buy VW unless you want to visit the dealership and don't fucking let your woman drive your car
My first waterpump went at 34k now at 75k and second one is fucked.. these cars are a money sink
bummer
lol you talk about the altima being slow as if a GTI was quick...
well.. my K04 GTI was quick.. probably quicker than this Ethanol fueled WRX..
Michael Scofield The GTI is quick for a small engine. I don’t care what anyone says. It’s a sleeper for sure.
My water pump failed at 15k miles :(, VW problems
im pretty much done with VW's at this point. Can't wait to get rid of this car.
LastHumansGarage Sorry to hear that =\, hope to see your next car pretty soon if thats the case!
LastHumansGarage Ehhh VWs are not that bad. The TDIs (at least newer ones) are pretty decent; as is the base Golf. No, the GTI is not reliable, but no performance oriented car at this price point (or higher even) is reliable unless it is a purpose built two seater. Even Japanese brands that have historically made extremely dependable vehicles suffer from this. The BRZ/FR-S has all sorts of issues (and it does not share a platform… which makes it even more confusing), as does the WRX, and the Veloster, and even the Civic Si is only about average in this area (and its owner satisfaction numbers are towards the bottom of the barrel). Car manufactures just can’t build a well sorted performance car at that price point without making compromises somewhere, and part of what they do to get their sales figure lower is share mechanical elements and the chassis with their more conservative platform-mates. These elements of the vehicle are of course not really designed for the stress and strain that you put them under when you boost a vehicle’s performance like that, and they end up failing.
But really you have the Miata, 370z, and what else? The Focus or Fiesta ST? Those are worse than the GTI in terms of maintenance issues. A Mustang? I mean they are average, but you lose IRS and depending on which configuration you go with they can have lots of problems as well. (We will see how the new one does.) I mean the pickings are seriously slim at around 25-30 grand, and after that you start getting into low end BMWs… and those can come with a whole barrel of new problems to deal with as well as higher maintenance costs. The Lexus IS is dependable, but not that sporty and downs gas like a fat kid eats cake. Basically to get a reliable car that gives you the performance you want you have to go up to a Porsche (the Boxster is projected to actually have less expensive maintenance costs over the first 5 years than a GTI, but then again it lacks a backseat; so not that practical for a family) or a higher end Audi (both Volkswagen stablemates mind you).
Now hopefully the new A3 will turn out to be as reliable as its revised upper tier cousins, but until we know for sure about that… well there is not really a better choice out there unless you want to go to something that is more conservative in the performance department.
LastHumansGarage Glad I read this comment after wanting to get a GTI...Seems like to many problems to deal with. The 2015's look pretty nice IMO, but, if they have the same quality control issues as the 4th Gen Jettas that were also made in Mexico, I'd definitely want to stay away from that.
Griff from what i have read the puebla plant is actually more advanced than wolfsburg
3:39 yes, bored car but more reliable than your plastic Golf... lol
lol.. u own one?
buy japanesse
100% agree.
lol no. Japanese cars suck
So not your wife's fault. just saying
dunno, this was like 10 years ago.. but prob was her fault.
Euro cars are rubbish
old ones, yes, they are worse than current stuff regarding reliability.
LastHumansGarage old and new. Too much electronic issues, expensive parts and having to remove more stuff to fix something simple. Dont forget the bolt head patterns are different to other car makes
@@bomblifenewzealand hahah you're either a Euro fan or you're not. Obviously, you fall into the latter.
