  • It's Star Wars Day (May 4) so check out how I made a lightsaber!
I'm a huge Star Wars nerd, and so to "celebrate" May 4th, I buckled down and completed my lightsaber project. This project has been in progress for almost 2 years (on and off) and it was finally time to finish it up. It uses a Teensy microcontroller and a prop shield to play sounds, handle motion detection and drive a LOT of LEDs to create the blade. The lights animate up and down with button presses and the sounds react to on, off and swinging the saber.
    My code is available from
    github.com/ili...
Some other saber projects I recently found:
    fredrik.hubbe.n...
    github.com/lee...

I've been seeing lots of comments like "oh, I could do it too if I had an expensive 3d printer".
    There are other options.
Not all 3d printers are expensive, but
If you wanted it printed you could use a service like 3dhubs or shapeways or even find a local makerspace. Also, it's basically a tube so you could try pvc pipe as a base, then add details on top.
I would challenge you to use what you have to make stuff you want.
    You can do it!!

This video has for sure inspired me to fit it with all the electronics and make it look great! Probably the only thing I would add would be a quick disconnect between the blade and the hilt that way its easily portable and I can still have it as a decoration without the blade. Overall this was awesome and made my Star Wars day that much better!

I've been trying to follow this tutorial for a week, and I'm completely at a halt! I'm using all the same boards and hardware, just a different LED Strip (WS2812b). They work fine with the PropShield using other codes using FastLED, but the Adafruit Dotstar in your code will not do anything with these strips. I have ZERO skill in coding Arduino or anything for that matter, so I'm not sure where else to go from here!

So, how's the battery life? Reading up specs for a 144LED/m WS2812B strip, I found that it will use 43.2W/meter. That's 8.6A current. That's probably peak current with everything at full brightness, but I suspect 4 x AA NiMH cells are not going to last very long. I'm working on something similar and planning to use a 18650 LiIon cell for power. In my project, I estimate the peak power draw will be about 20W (65 cm long strip / 3.7V supply).
Last year I built a prop that had 24 WS2812Bs, an Adafruit Trinket (3.3V) and it was powered using a single 10440. The LED strip is rated for 5V, but will work fine with a slightly lower voltage. The lights were almost never at full power, so battery life was around 10 hours.

to slim it down, you could use a Lipo cell ( they out put 4.2v at full charge ) instead of the 4AA battery cage. With this you could also use a micro usb port under a panel to charge the cell with a small charge regulator pcb, and it all can be scrapped from usb a recargeable torch.

It just seems large compared to the movie ones and I understand that the technological parts keep you from making it smaller in the first place. I'd just love to see the hilt smaller once you get can smaller parts too!

I really enjoy your videos. I've made my own lightsaber as well using custom machined parts. Have you considered using clear cellophane gift wrap as the diffuser? Essentially you have about 4 or 5 wraps around your LEDs and then slide it into the tube. It would likely be brighter than your current setup. As the light passes through the cellophane it reflects back and forth between layers and gives a nice even glow. You are probably not getting as bright of a blade using the foam. The foam, while evenly diffusing the light, is certainly not allowing all of the light to pass through. Many people in the "saber building community" use the cellophane method with fantastic results. Anyway thanks for the great ideas!
