Your video helps tremendously. Greatly appreciated. My elderly non English/Spanish parents will need to catch a connecting flight at MAD. Fly from America to Asia. Without this video i wont be able to prep them for it. I emailed the airport for help. They cannot even provide me screenshots for how to connect wifi…they would offer help on phone only.

My wife and I will be flying Iberia from Chicago to MAD next month arriving at terminal 4s and transferring to 4 for a trip to Florence on Vueling. Then five days later coming back to Spain and spending three weeks touring southern Spain. We have been to Spain in 2018 and are so looking forward to coming back.

Hey. Firstly thank you for such a clearly explained video. I was hoping you could give me some guidance on my specific situation. I have a flight with Ryanair from Edinburgh, UK, to madrid, and then another flight from madrid to mexico city with aeromexico. I do not have any checked luggage. I am assuming, once I arrive, I will need to go through immigration control, and then find which gate to go to, etc.
I was a bit silly in that my arrival time in madrid is 12:05, and my flight from madrid is at 13:30. I'm not a regular flyer so I ignorantly thought this would be enough time. I guess I'm wondering - what terminals do you expect I will arrive / depart from, and, I was wondering as well how strict the 13:30 departure time is? Does boarding close completely some time before that? It is a 12 hr 30 minute flight - do they tend to have some leeway, or are they very strict on timings?
Also, I did not book these tickets with one provider, I booked them separately. If it were the case I miss my flight, are they usually okay with you getting the next flight, even if it's tomorrow? Or do you have to purchase a brand new ticket, etc?
Sorry, I know that's a lot of questions! Thank you :-)

    • @ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal
      @ROADTRIPSpainandPortugal  Місяць тому

Hi, you should arrive at T1 or T2 and depart from T1. Yours is a high risk connection. Boarding finishes before the estimated departure time. Ryanair is adamant that if you loose a connection due to a delay on a flight of theirs, it is entirely your responsibility. Try changing your first flight.

¡Hola Tio Tony! I finally revisited Madrid again last week! Unfortunately, my flight from London arrived very late at night and my hostel (near the Callao Station) didn't answer the bell when I arrived past midnight. So I decided to just walk along Gran Via (I only had a backpack anyway) and found an open bocadillería for some jamon and zumo :) After that I decided to just go back to the airport (short walk Gran Via to Cibeles, of course) via the 24hr yellow bus since I had a morning flight to Dublin the next day, and sleep at the airport. I noticed...that T2 was a lot more peaceful at night than T4 (my flight was with Aer Lingus, so T4 was my first option) for sleeping. T4 was still crowded and noisy past midnight! The whole time I was in Madrid I was thinking of your channel and "what did Tony and Cecilia advise about this?" LOL! Maybe do a "Sleeping tips at the airport in Spain and Portugal" series as well? Hasta la proxima.

Hey! Thank you so much for this video.
I was in Madrid airport 3 times already but I never needed to change terminals.
I plan to return from Paragauy in December (to Vienna), the departure from Asuncion is 14:20 and arrival is 5:15 of the Madrid time.
The Air Europa lands on T1 and fortunately flights from Paraguay usually arrive earlier. Planned arrival is 5:15 and then I likely think about going with Iberia from T4 to Vienna that is going to departure at 8:40.
I will have checked baggage with me so I guess I will have less than 3 hours (passport control and claiming my baggage) to get from T1 with my baggage to the T4. I remember the departures areas of T1 very well as I usually was flying through this terminal, the bus stop is outside of the departures in T1? Not sure if I can catch the flight or how far is the bus stop from the T1 departures. As I never used this bus and didn't see the bus stop anywhere before (but I wasn't going much outside of T1).

These are two separated tickets. For what i have research and the info in your video, we will arrive at T4 and depart from T1, and have to collect and check in out luggage.
Do you think we can make it? 😅

After flying into/out of MAD in March, I am undecided what flight option to choose for an upcoming trip in February 2023. I plan to visit Madrid for a few days before going to Seville. Should I fly home to Chicago from Seville on Iberia with a one hour 5 minute layover in MAD? Or should I take the train from Seville the day before and just fly out of MAD? Are all of Iberia's domestic and international gates at T4? or will the Iberia flight to Chicago leave from T4S? 65 minutes might be legal but is it doable? From what you are saying, it sounds like it would be risky to try to catch an 11:35am flight to Oviedo, which I assume would depart from T1-3? Hello Tony, thank you so much for this amazing video.
I need your help please if you don't mind.
My cousin and I are coming in on different flights to Madrid, Barajas -- she's arriving at terminal T1 (at 14:15) and I'm arriving at T4S (at 14:50). How can I go meet her at T1? (She's 17 and scared to get lost if she comes looking for me), Can you suggest a good meeting spot? or a place where she can wait for me until I come get her? Also I read online that T1 doesn't have free wifi in arrival for us to get in touch. I thank you in advance. -Hope

Hello Hope, there is a food joint, DEHESA DE SANTA MARÍA, you will see as soon as you reach the public area of T1 at the arrivals level. That could be the ideal place to wait. The video contains specific instructions on the T4>T2 connection. At the time of check-in (often you can do that even before that) should let the airline know you will need wheelchairs on departure and also on arrival in Madrid.

Hi Tony, the airport transit visa enables transit through the international area of airports located in the schengen area but does not permit entry into the territory of the schengen states, right?
So what is and what isn't actually considered part of the international transit area?
For instance, is the passport control considered to be part of the international zone area?

We would never accept a short connection time at Madrid airport, even less at the moment, when the airport is operating way above its capacity. We would leave 90 minutes for a connection like yours. But that's us, we hate stress when we travel. All the best!

Hi Louise, yes, you will go through passaport control at T4S. For non-EU citizens, and depending on the amount of flights arriving simultaneously, the queues can be really slow. Anything between 10 minutes to 1 hour. That's why we recommend long intervals between flights.
