Been riding Honda Goldwings since 1980. Have ridden about 800,000 miles. After watching this videl i bought a used 2013 Yamaha Super Tnere with 23,000 mi.es on it. The bike is a real joy to ride and i love it. Thank you. Bob
I operated an ADV Bike Outfitters Company for 16 years and worked on a lot of big ADV Machines. Did mainenance and custom fabrication to them. I closed shop in 2016 to fight cancer. All the bikes that came though my shop were all ridden hard. So I got to see a lot of "Will Fail" parts on almost every brand. I chose the Big 2013 Yamaha XTZ 1200 Super Tenere because of what I had seen. Example: Out of necessity, and the large call volume from riders passing through, I use to keep on my shelf a replacement rear swingarm and rear diff for the 1200 GS BMW's because I changed out more cracked or broken ones than anything else I did. Loved that single swingarm but I just replaced too many broke ones to want to buy one. The Tenere's shaft drive and swingarm are a beefy selling point. And wheel changed ar really easy. (Well for me they are!) We also provided a custom crash guard, engine guard and luggage carrier fabrication service. Most of my customers would buy pannier systems "off the rack" so to speak, then find out that Mass Produced racks couldn't be modified to do any more that it was designed for. IE...Carrying the weight of added fuel carriers, rifle scabbards (I love to dove hunt in East Texas!!!) , machette carriers, water jug racks, easy removable back rest (I used Isuzu Rodeo Headrest and they worked perfect), large descrete secure tool carriers....... Stuff like that. So I got real good at fabricating carriers made from larger than Factory tubings & that looked mass produced, but had room and the strength to take an extra mounted item and still take a hard hit on the ground. They could carry a s**t ton of stuff if need be. The Tenere Riders only came to me to fabricate stuff for their machines. So I didn't have to do any fixing of broken bits to get them back on the road. That's why I bought one for myself. I love riding it.(rode it into town yesterday to get ice cream) And yes it has gone sliding down on the highway and other than a cracked windscreen it was picked up and ridden the rest of the trip with no issues. (The Windscreen struck a post in the slide.) (NO other damage other than scraping off the powder coating) I prefer the Tenere over say, a Touring bike because mine rides how I sit, and can do dirt roads and trails without issue. After all, I am an ADV Rider! It' just so comfortable on the road. I even designed and built air conditioner for mine. A lot like and evaprative swamp cooler. The only way to cross West Texas in the Summer. :) Great Video Paul!
Thanks. This was/is worth watching. Get really tired of the 1,000 mile and 10,000 mile reviews on motorcycles, they are worthless because the thing is still brand new. Until you get to at least 50,000 don't even bother talking about one. I just rolled over on 55,000 with a little 650 V-Strom..... I'll have an opinion on it when it hits 100k.
Take a look at the 'bathtub curve' in reliability engineering. What is known as 'infant mortality' can be very informative concerning what to expect of a machine.
Excellent video - could do without the background music, though. The Tenere is a good choice and I will consider for sure after watching your videos. Thanks for what you do.
I have a 2013 S10 with less than 20k miles. You've inspired me to ride more and not worry about how the S10 will serve me on the road. Good luck on your quest!
I've been looking at a lot of reviews on doing research into the 1200 super tenere. I had the old 750 back in the 90s. That was a great machine with loads of power. I've currently got a BMW R1200GS. It's a fantastic machine to ride, however it's plagued with electrical problems. Typical BMW over engineering. So the 1200 tenere is on my short list now. I like the shaft drive for its low maintenance. The fact that you have done nearly 300,000 miles on 2 of them is a great testimonial to their reliability, which to my is very important. Safe riding buddy.
300,000 miles. Wow! Todays bikes are more reliable, I think. I've put 9600 miles on a '22 KLR in 5 months, 0 issues. I'm looking at a used '21 Super Tenere as a second bike. Thanx for this vid. Speaks well of u and the bike. Keep on keepin' on!! Woooo!!!
Hey Long Haul Paul, great synopsis of your Super Ténéré. We recently met in Panama City, FL during Thunder Beach. Test ride on the ST and talking with you about your success with this bike has convinced me to purchase one. Going to Alaska in 2024. From one Paul to another, ride safe and wishing you the best.
I love how nonchalant you say “this is gonna be an 1100 mile day” 😂 awesome video and Yamahas are truly incredible machines. I plan on getting one these in the future.
@Nombre Apellido that's insane if i averaged 50mph which is not that easy it would still take 22 hours to do 1100miles. I've done 615miles in the car but that was leaving at 6.00am and getting back at 10.00pm. That was buying a van so sorting out the log book and bank transfer included too.
See,that's a long distance DAY...my record in a truck is around that, yet there some a-hole claiming 2000mile days...in a truck with huge diesel tanks,I do not stop in 18hrs,everything is at my side, food, drink, piss bottle, whereas a motorcycle has limited range... I'm supposed to believe he crammed in an extra 900miles in that 6hrs...no way on public highways, I cruise at 80mph?
Excellent review! I’ve been considering a 2017 Africa Twin, and until your review, only given passing consideration to the big Yamaha. I love the fact that it’s shaft driven, and that it’s not a garage queen. You use it, much like I use my 06 KLR650. The KLRs been a good bike, but I need a bit more power on the highway. Well done, honest review. Thank you!
I had a KLR for a year. 2up riding led to 3 years on a V-strom650. More highway riding led to my Super Tenere. I loved them all, but the big Yamaha has me planning multi state rides. Such a fantastic machine.
you aint kidding about the highway use. my 08 absolutely gulps the oil at 70+mph. here in WY its 80 on the highways and most ppl do 90. my KLR just wont cut it for the highway.
Cool video! Great trip! You are welcome to come to Siberia, to Lake Baikal, and then the Mongols are nearby! Good luck on the roads! Greetings from Siberia, Russia!
Its the valve shim servicing that looks not easy on these but ive heard theyre really good at staying in spec. Amazingly built bikes. So under rated and far better than a BMW gs
After many years planning to get a Supertenere, I will finally get mine next Friday. I am very much looking Forward for it and hope to have many happy moments with it as you do.
Paul, you're a nobleman on a noble steed. My mom had M.S., tell me about your basis for this million mile journey. As far as motorcycles go, the reliability of that Yamaha is astounding! I bought the Star Venture in November, against the advice of my Honda dealer. I figured if Yamaha could get an ADV bike so right, the Venture couldn't be as bad as all the keyboard jockeys made it out to be. Spring is coming, I'm looking forward to finding out! Thanks for supporting a cure!!!!
northerniltree, for more about my journey, please check out my website. Https://www.longhaulpaul.com I’ve been riding for MS since 2012, raising awareness, speaking to over 250 groups of patients across the US while raising $150K for charity. I was diagnosed in 2005.
I've had mine since 2015 with a custom sidecar and must say "this is the best bike I ever had". And I have and had plenty of bikes. Been all over Russia, Asia and Europe. Not one problem
by far the best video ever on Super Tenere. I have a very old one, i am still trying to decode the VIN, it is a European standard, i bought it in Togo west africa
When I bought my 2017, I knew I had purchased the greatest motorcycle ever built. When I saw your black bike at Barber, I smiled at the confirmation of my original thought.
Thank you for this review. In seven minutes, everything is most necessary. This is one of the videos that played a positive role in making the decision to purchase a motorcycle of this particular brand (a little newer, though). Thank you again! Russia, Moscow.
Thanks for the video Paul! Great bike, worthy cause, and I enjoyed watching every minute of this. I share your passion for touring, just got back from a month touring the western US on my BMW, and am already planning my next adventure.
Great video, I actually made the same experience. 😉👍 But why did you do 300.000 miles on two Super Ténérés and not on one? Could you please further elaborate on this one? - Thanks! 🤔
Good video listing the features of the Super T. I am about to turn 40K miles on my 2013 and it is the best bike that I have ever owned in 40+ years of riding. Hope to run into you in New Hampshire or somewhere else this season.
I saw your black one displayed at Barber Motorsports Museum in Birmingham/AL and i didin`t know your history before go there on my 2012 S10. Now i own a 2014 model in low millage and i don´t think to sell it. Thanks to share your experience and tips.
I'm also on my 2nd S10. My first one (2012) met a bitter end when a pickup pulled out in front of me. Before I even got the insurance check I bought an identical 2012 Super Tenere. I love them. Glad you're liking your Star Venture.
Great video Paul. So here's a piece of information for ya. I'm 60 years of age and ride a 2013 Yamaha FJR1300a. Love the bike. Have made a few very long trips on it. My secret to cutting down on fatigue, is noise elimination. I like listening to music, along the way, but having been an aircraft mechanic for 33 years, my hearing is not the best. I use a set of Bose noise canceling ear buds. Plugged into my Android phone. I use Pandora, Tune in Radio, and a mini sd disc, with recorded music. Plus a small inline amplifier. It's the cats pajamas of a setup. It eliminates a good 75% of the wind/road noise. The down side....... you likely won't hear an approaching emergency vehicle.
I've had the FJR and and currently the S10. Both well liked. Kept my FJR for 10 years. At 6' tall the S10 fits better and is more confortable for the long haul. FJR clearly more sporty but the S10 can take any road or fire road out there and not blink.
i drive TDM 900 for 10 years now..it has only 40000 km, becouse i don't have time for it..but every time i have a chance to ride, i have a smile on my face and tingles pass me by..it is my theraphy
Had a 2013 Tenere and liked it a lot but then my brain went soft and thought I needed another FJR.......sold the 2013 bought the FJR wanted a bigger bike and saw a Goldwing F6B so I sold the FJR and bought the wing. Now I want another Tenere, truly an awesome bike that can do anything plus its much better on the white line here in Kaleefornia.......so in a year or two I'll sell the F6B and end up for the rest of my riding days on the S. Tenere...........can't wait.
Just bought a '13 S10 and can't wait to crush some miles. Doing North/East Canada JUN2023but more in the future. Fantastic review! Makes me absolutely certain in my choice of bike. Hope we cross paths. Instant sub
When I watched this video for the first time, I had a XT660R, but wanted a Super Teneré real bad. August 2019, I looked to upgrade my Audi, and looked at 1, and decided to buy a ST. Also in the White with red and black decals. Loving it everyday. Safe riding. PS: Love the Star Venture you are using now.
Thanks Paul, that's a lot of useful information, I've ride on a CB500X for 1 and half year, which is my first bike, now I'm looking for something bigger, was looking at FJR1300, but after sat on a Super Tenere in dealership I feel ST1200 was good too.
I've owned many brands, and in the ADV segment, have been a big fan of BMW's, however I too bought a S10. My decision was based on it being the only other bike in this segment (besides BMW) that was shaft drive, as I'm not a big fan of chains. The S10 is not the fastest, lightest, cheapest, fanciest, or most feature laden, but what it is, is absolutely bullet proof. It's the Sturmovik (for those that know their WWII Russian aircraft) of the motorcycle world, absolutely tank like, and easy to maintain. If I had to pick one bike to ride around the world on, with the idea in mind that I had little to no dealer support, and reliability was paramount, this would be the bike...it will take you to hell and back and will never complain.
Great video (except the background music too loud though). I too have a Super Tenere with 'only' 17,000 miles on it owned since new for 4 years. Only use it for touring else it is unused. I too have found the bike to be supremely reliable and smooth. Easy to ride for such a large bike and well balanced at low speed. I too do my own servicing. Only issue is that the chrome fork stanchions are now badly corroded and this has damaged the fork seals: this is due to the salt used on the UK roads in winter + I never wash my bike so it's not really Yamaha's fault. They will need a re-chrome soon. Would I buy another? Yes.
It's stories like this that made me get one. I'm late to the party (the end of 2023), but Yamaha was smart enough to let this bike run all the way through this year...and maybe next year. I found a low-mile, well-maintained '22 and, while I won't be slamming pavement like you do (which is so very much appreciated), it'll see a lot of miles over the next few years. Don't know if you're still monitoring this, but what do you have now, and are you still on your trek?
I have a 2014 super tenere 39,000 on the clock apart from normal service intervals only replaced a headlight bulb you just jump on it and ride and feel you can ride the world on it my pal has a gs total bollocks build quality been back to the dealer 3 times in one yr
Lawman FL if I could remove the music, I obviously would! Final upload was way louder than the project. It's been a couple years now, next 150,000 miles of videos are a lot better. Learned my lesson!
@@longhaulpaul It is really up to you and the style you like Paul. I don't care the music, but I appreciate the words you share. Probably the goal was not to make a hollywoo movie, so it's fajn. People always complain here on youtube, it is neverending story ... :)
My brother has almost 100k on his S10... it's a solid bike and he's only had one issue (valve problem). He averages in the low 40's mpg and since he's a bigger guy the weight is a non-factor for him. IMO they're pretty underrated... he's not hanging when we're in sporty riding territory (I've got a Multistrada) but for touring it's a great choice.
Jon Erik Greene:::: Most likely the same Tenere with new graphics and colors. Sort of like the KLR Kawasaki, if it works don't mess with it. A little less steel would be nice and redesign the rims to two types of spokes not three..
BIG Stick Since my earlier comment I have brought home a 2014 Super T with only 1k miles. I’ve really enjoyed it so far and look forward to getting some miles down. I had a KLR, they are good cheap bikes, however, somehow it felt heavier than this super T. Once my DR sells, I’m going back to a 250 as my dirt oriented adventurer... likely a WR.
In Dec 17 I bought a barely used 2013 Super Tenere. Road it across the Trans Lab highway in July 2018, chuckholes, loose gravel and mud.. but it was perfect. Love my Goldwing, but owning a Super Tenere makes it a tough, tough choice some days (unless its cold and the heated seat and grips of the Wing call me).
Yes, I added heated grips to everyone of my last 30 motorcycles. A plug for my heated jacket as well. The Tenere supports quite a bit of electrical accessories.
The S10 is a phenomenal bike! And along with the BMW GS, and Triumph Tiger, are still the only 3 shaft driven options as far as I know after a decade of their offerings. You’d think more folks would follow the GS’s lead on the shaft drive since it’s worked so well for BMW for 30 years, and has also been successful for Triumph and Yamaha. I’ll never own another bike bike that’s not shaft driven!
Really like listening to your informative voice. Background music is really annoying though so it becomes painful to continue to watch. Good luck with your quest.
Saw you at Denver motorcycle show lot of good info on motorcycle "hacks" for long travel and emergency repair. I am a proud owner of a 2012 super tenere and as my 3rd bike it is my favorite I have owned. The only work I have done it is stuff I have elected to do it and regular maintenance.
Hunky MrB - And leaves both in the dust when it comes to reliably running. While the euro bikes have continued problems the Yamaha just keeps on going like the Energizer Bunny.🤘🏼
What seat do you have on the bike? I just got one and I'm not liking the seat. But none of the aftermarkets seem to have much of a dish to them. They seem pretty flat.
Awesome video thanks for posting!! I've been looking at the s10 myself looks a superb bit of kit that's for sure. Had no end of trouble with another brand of adv bikes so it's interesting to see someone else's experience with a different brand :)
If I understood correctly, the first tenere had about 240,000 miles. Did you have any more expensive breakdowns? How did she behave after 200,000 miles? I’m thinking of buying one that has 25,000 miles so I’m thinking about how much more it can drive.
Holy.... ca to nh on motorcycle in 3 days... i did 38 hours from ca to va between my friend and i changing to drive(car) 8 hours and we were very tired. I think 3 days is very impressive
When driver or rider whatever,is good and feel motorbike feel engine there is no maintenance needed. Bike can be the best in the world but if rider dont hear whats going on in engine and look after himself during riding...no point to have the best bike.As well is not the same 25 years old rider and 50 years old rider on tenere...younger riders expect from tenere to fly round the world... Respect for you sir...well done!
I honestly tried to watch he whole video but the music is killing me..lol!
Same here!

CurtisDrew- excellent comment. God bless you. Greetings and respect to all from Durango Mexico 🇲🇽
The free publicity Yamaha are getting for this, I absolutely think they should donate the cost of this bike to your cause.
What makes you think it’s free.
They give LHP the ride...as well as the 2018 SVTC. They know all about his exposure! :)

i totally agree, no bmw can get closer to yamaha or honda when it comes to reliability

My Aunt has MS. Godspeed on your journey.
Great video. Thanks for posting.
I love my 2012 I ordered and don't ever think of selling it.
i drive TDM 900 for 10 years now..it has only 40000 km, becouse i don't have time for it..but every time i have a chance to ride, i have a smile on my face and tingles pass me by..it is my theraphy
Star Venture, wow...You deserve it! Looking forward to your next post, keep it up!
Nice vid, Yamaha number one manufacturer for reliability.
Banditmanuk Yes ! Only 11% Fail rate

Just bought a '13 S10 and can't wait to crush some miles. Doing North/East Canada JUN2023but more in the future.
Fantastic review! Makes me absolutely certain in my choice of bike.
Hope we cross paths.

Great video, great trip, great cause and great bike!
Thanks Paul, that's a lot of useful information, I've ride on a CB500X for 1 and half year, which is my first bike, now I'm looking for something bigger, was looking at FJR1300, but after sat on a Super Tenere in dealership I feel ST1200 was good too.
Same here, hitting 65k miles on my cb500x(first bike). What bike did you end up getting?
@@Silentbutdeadly826 Yamaha FJR1300 lol, what's your choice?
Enjoy the videos .....keep them coming..........and soon be at that 1,000,000 miles
The Super Tenere is a very good choice and I will consider for sure after watching your videos, you sound very honest. Thanks a lot!!
As far as power and weight its middle of the pack. As far as reliability its 1st.
Sorry, What model of motorcycle you are talking about?
S10…!? Why not ST If you have to absolutely abbreviate the name.
Stop the music! Annoying and Sesame Street-like......
300,000 miles WOW! 💪💪👍👍👏👏👏
Awesome! Yamaha's best reliable bike!
After TDM 900😅
I've seen a lot of bike videos but this one was the most interesting👍💪
Another video pushing me to a Tenere! I’ve got to know... what’s the new bike going to be?
The 700 you have now doesn't have traction control. Seems you love your new bike quite much - so much, I bought one because of your commentary.
fantastic i got the smaller t7
SFR SanFranciscoRider
Me too! 20,000 miles on the T7 since June.
@@longhaulpaul very cool - did you do anything about your windshield ? i just cant handle the wind noise on the t7 with stock screen
Nice opening with Spotted Wolf Canyon in Utah. Did not hear the New Hampshire accent until you said"New Hampshire".
Amazing video best regards from Ecuador, Yamaha Super Tenere 1200 the best bike with enough fiability to go around the world
great video, very informative! i'd suggest losing the background music though it's very distracting!
I have been trying to decide on my next bike. I definitely want an adventure bike and it seems like Yamaha is the Toyota of motorcycles.
Damn reliable.
The "music"......
It's like the yodeling in "Mars Attacks" !
Wow amazing miles! Super vid Paul
I'm amazed at how 1/2 of new BMW models are not shaft drive anymore.
Helpful review, thanks I suspect this is where my money will go next.
I have same year and color love it
Really like listening to your informative voice. Background music is really annoying though so it becomes painful to continue to watch. Good luck with your quest.
Umbazooksus1 Why do people feel the need to put crappy music on their videos?
Second that, had to stop at 1/4 the way!
What is it with all you pussies and your complaints about the background music? Grow up for fuck sake.
What a bike, what a journey.
Nice info....was going BMW GS 1250...but after your clip...I'm thinking more on the tenere...love all the way from Kenya.
The Tenere will outlast the BMW.
Great video. Did you do all the valve checks?
Not a single valve check.
@@longhaulpaul wow…maybe it wouldnt be a luxury at this point hehe
@@Speedytrip today's mechanics would screw it up
Those are great bikes! I ride an Ultra but the Yamaha is much more reliable, the music isnt bad at all, keep up the good work and ride on .
Nice section of I-70 in Utah! Thanks for the review. I think the Super Tenere is giving BMW and KTM a run for their money!
Hunky MrB - And leaves both in the dust when it comes to reliably running. While the euro bikes have continued problems the Yamaha just keeps on going like the Energizer Bunny.🤘🏼
I want to go on your next trip!!!
What seat do you have on the bike? I just got one and I'm not liking the seat. But none of the aftermarkets seem to have much of a dish to them. They seem pretty flat.
I've always had custom seats made by Bill Mayer Saddles. Nothing compared to a seat made for your weight and shape.
I love my 12 ST! Great Video!
Awesome video thanks for posting!! I've been looking at the s10 myself looks a superb bit of kit that's for sure. Had no end of trouble with another brand of adv bikes so it's interesting to see someone else's experience with a different brand :)
I wish more bikes have Shaft traction, is a big win over the chain.
Your living the dream be safe
Well, I just hope I reach my goal before my disease progresses to the point I can’t ride or walk. It’s a Journey to raise awareness for a cure.
Ok. Will do. Thanks
Very good review, except for the music. If the Tenere comes with that horrible music, I don't want it. lol
It only has 120K miles on it" - LOL.
Cool video, and enjoy the comfy luxo new ride!
If I understood correctly, the first tenere had about 240,000 miles. Did you have any more expensive breakdowns? How did she behave after 200,000 miles? I’m thinking of buying one that has 25,000 miles so I’m thinking about how much more it can drive.
Where did you get your extra fuel tank installed?
You are my new Hero !!!!
Great video! I'm trying to get over the price!
Did you ever have the valves adjusted?
jeesus, you are killing me with that backgroud music. I'm 2min into the video and I'm already starting to pull my hair off
Holy.... ca to nh on motorcycle in 3 days... i did 38 hours from ca to va between my friend and i changing to drive(car) 8 hours and we were very tired.
