- "Which Switch Is the Switch, Miss, for Ipswich?" sung by Billy Murray; Victor 18031-B (10"). Acoustically recorded in Camden, New Jersey, on 31 March 1916.
Played with a Burmese Colour Needle on a gramophone with a homemade 80 Hz exponential horn, Victor Orthophonic soundbox, and HMV swan-neck tone-arm, currently in a prototype cabinet.
That setup really produces a great sound. Classic Billy Murray.
Im not sure I've seen a gramophone horn that big before.
A real tongue twister. Must have been fun when the audience joined in the chorus!
It must have seemed odd to a USA audience as the song was written about English towns for a London show audience, but not a Music Hall song so not intended for an audience singalong , Sister Susie, She Sells Sea shells, and Proper Cup of Coffee for example would have been. This set up pulls a lot out of the Victor acoustic recording I like the current paper finish and the time taken to make that horn must have been considerable.
