You're right that it's "tamed". There is a bio tab on the mars volta website and in it there is an interview where Omar states that when he was recording and mixing Octahedron he wanted to express restraint in each song. He stated that he had to fight the urge to "add 98 more parts to song and tons of jam sessions".
their lyrics all mean something. Some of them are commentaries on the improper proccesses of some mebers of the psychology world, some are about human mortality, some are about understanding the deepest parts of our own consciousness. It's a matter of looking into it from different points of view. Some of them from a point of view that I couldn't acheive until smoking weed and experimenting with psychadelics.
for the first time since ive heard, mars volta came with lyrics that actually MEANT something. teflon is about a sout american official(might have been an undercover cop) that was found out at some sort of gathering. what they did was put a bunch of tires over him up to his head and then set it on fire. the videos on the interweb somewhere.
Absolutely chilling, each time I hear it. Every note resonates like frigin dynamite. What is next boy's? As I joined this odessey long ago and am ready for more.....
Teflon is a nickname for a politician to whom criticism does not stick kind of like Kennedy or Reagen who no matter what the scandal, his popularity never dragged.
@asspills I see where you're coming from but i respect Pridgens drumming even more here because everyone knows he's a tech-wizard on drums but he also knows how to hang back and let the song sing by keeping the drumming more musical and relaxed instead of overtly technical
@Luckzzz Thats what I think of them too. After more then 10 years with no interest to music, they woke me up again. Bravo Volta and thanks for the music I adore.
fav album is frances, every track on deloused (except thier bonus track ambuletz) was a hit. but frances was just epic, then amputecture came out and that shit was still a good ass album and had all epic ass songs. and most songs in bedlam were good, and had that raunchy volta feel to it to the upmost extent of thier other albums and that's why i appreciated bedlam so much. But this one just seems like they strewn a bunch of songs together...
si no les gusta bedlam NO ENTIENDEN THE MARS VOLTA. es un buen disco y es diferente, esa es la mentalidad de la banda: mutar. dios bendiga a de mars bolta loco!!!
Glad to see many other Porcupine Tree fans out there! TMV and Porcupine Tree are both two of the most fantastic bands out there, some of the rarely good modern prog.
Good bands all change. Look at Opeth. I'm glad The Mars have explored new sounds with each outing, and clearly Octahedron is no exception. And if they can expand their audience while making mindblowing music, more power to them. This is a terrific song, whichever way you look at it (as a fan of the band or not).
"As the way we write songs and words, if it looks great on paper then to us it's like painting, so if it looks good meaning the second then people usually have a better interpretation than we ever would." It means whatever the hell you think it means, lol.
@ChaostheClown It's not spam. I just searched them on UA-cam, and they're really good. They're definitely worth checking out. Like a softer Mars Volta.
@sprackles this song is about what cedric would do if the republicans win the elections, you its like a "what if...". its in an interview. sorry for my bad english
A lot of you complaining, saying this sucks, and deloused is the only thing worth a shit. As people and they as musicians, we must evolve. We have no choice but to grow and mature. If they had continued to play the same shit, I'm sure you would also have criticized them for never changing their style. The fact is that all of their albums are distinctly different and I personally can't choose a favorite.
I've been a TMV fan since Frances the Mute, but the way the fans act is why I stay off any of their forums. I'm just beginning to listen to Octahedron, though, and some of their comments do have a point; this sounds more commercial than their other work. (I'm not saying that negatively.) After listening to the entire album, though, I might change my opinion.
Ah, well, thanks anyway. But I did what you said and looked it up on wiki. Here's the info. Teflon includes parts from the song "A Story Teeth Rotted For" on Omar's solo album "Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fungus".
wow! yo apenas vengo conosiendo a la banda y mi primera impresión hasta ahora es que son como una banda hija de led zeppelin lo cual me encanta!!!! sin palabras !!!!!!
for all you haterz !!!! YOU ARE LOST !! i am totally feeling these tracks !!! and honestly.... cedric can not make his lyrics anymore simpler for the layman as this....... all of the clues have been laid out since ATDI. god i hope this song doesn't reach the airwaves.
If that's true then you're not an artist you are a servant, and as a musician I feel that Pridgen is the best thing to happen to Volta, in fact Octahedron really seems like it's all about simple grooves, grooves that Omar writes and Pridgen performs, so if you hate Volta's grooves then get angry at Omar not Pridgen. All of Volta's catalog is amazing and I hope they never stop being selfish and hope they always make music for themselves, not for fanboys or people who are music critics. Peace.
Who cares if it's commercial??!!?? It's a great song/album so why does it matter? They have ALWAYS said that they work in the "pop format". None of us could ever dream of making music this good, you guys need to watch the "Hitler finds out Octahedron is pop", it's amazing, perfect description of Mars Volta fans and fanboys. They are artist that are growing and expressing themselves, they happen to paint some of my most favorite songs, no matter whether it's pop or not.
let the wheels burn let the wheels burn stack the tires to the neck with the body inside i don't know what the hell it meens.... but i fucking luv it!!!!
on their next albums, juan, marcel and cedric will all get creative freedom on the songwriting process. which basically means, the mars volta we once knew will probably never be the same. Good thing we got Deloused, frances the mute, amputechure, and octohedron on discs forever though.
@jmhemmis0 Also check out the band Porcupine Tree. Like Mars Volta, they have been said to sound a lot like a modern day Pink Floyd. Listen to these three P.T. songs and if your not feeling them then it was not meant to be. Time Flies (sounds a lot like "dogs" by Floyd) Sound of Musak (insanely creative drum beat) Blackest Eyes (Kicks ace)
Definitley. Listen to Cicatriz ESP after Tetragrammaton. Amputechture more disjointed and piercing, I love Deloused and Frances, but Amputechture makes them seem like Porcupine Tree albums. Then again thats my opinion. I love all their albums (well, not so into Bedlam in Goliath) and this new one is sounding pretty good.
@asspills Even the most gifted drummers don't just chug out insanely fast beats every song. The most talented drummers know how to restrain themselves in order to fit the feel of the song.
If anything the new album, in a word, sounds "contained" compared to past works, especially Bedlam, theres nothing wrong with it at all, its just people being douches for something "changing" that isn't really changing other than their perceived audio aesthetics for something.
@jmhemmis0 Haha I gave up even trying to relate anyone to Floyd anymore. However, I do believe that Cedric Bixler would do a mean Robert Plant impersonation, and that the ideal Zeppelin cover band would be a conglomeration of Mars Volta & Mastodon band members.
This Band have a rare quality: He blend complex music, intellectual lyrics, noise with heart-touching melodies...
Música más allá de tu mente!
y mucho más este disco que es totalmente danzante en venas!
My favorite song on Octahedron is Teflon. Dear God, it's so amazing.
had to come back and listen to this song another hundred times lol
melodias infernales.... espaciales.... apasionadas
simply incredible

Can't ever get enough of this band. Totally junkie at this point.Seriously, badass.
This is album is actually amazing
their lyrics all mean something. What a good song live, absolutely amazing.
Great pics! Love it.
I can't get enough of these guys. Thanks a ton for putting this up. My friend is coming over now to give me the full album. Haha.
Its amazing what omar and cedric have evolved to. ive been with them since at the drive in. Hell Paso! and i still love at the drive in!
I think this is my favorite song on this album.
more more more! I can't get enough of these guys. Mars Volta and Mastodon are the future of Prog Rock and music in general. Just my opinion.
He said in an interview one of his big inspirations was Bjork.
Very nice song
Woah....the symbolism!
for the first time since ive heard, mars volta came with lyrics that actually MEANT something. teflon is about a sout american official(might have been an undercover cop) that was found out at some sort of gathering. what they did was put a bunch of tires over him up to his head and then set it on fire. the videos on the interweb somewhere.
I really like that this album doesn't try to play up the instrumentation. Pretty straightforward rock with very Volta touches.
This one and Copernicus with its electronic arrangements are just inexplicably perfect.
Absolutely chilling, each time I hear it. Every note resonates like frigin dynamite. What is next boy's? As I joined this odessey long ago and am ready for more.....
Bedlam is actually my favorite album.
Teflon is a nickname for a politician to whom criticism does not stick kind of like Kennedy or Reagen who no matter what the scandal, his popularity never dragged.
I fuckin love the odd cymbal accents during the main beat
with a body inside!
oh i
i'm a huge pink floyd fan and this is the closest modern band i can relate to them
the drums are immense.
enough said :)
i heart this track!!!!!!
@asspills I see where you're coming from but i respect Pridgens drumming even more here because everyone knows he's a tech-wizard on drums but he also knows how to hang back and let the song sing by keeping the drumming more musical and relaxed instead of overtly technical
great song. great hair.
@Luckzzz
Thats what I think of them too. After more then 10 years with no interest to music, they woke me up again. Bravo Volta and thanks for the music I adore.
JUAN ALDERETE (: i love him haha
AGREED!!!!!!!!!!!!! You rock!
one of there smoothest records
fav album is frances, every track on deloused (except thier bonus track ambuletz) was a hit. but frances was just epic, then amputecture came out and that shit was still a good ass album and had all epic ass songs. and most songs in bedlam were good, and had that raunchy volta feel to it to the upmost extent of thier other albums and that's why i appreciated bedlam so much. 0:43 to 0:52 sounds like geddy lee from Rush.

So true.
love love love it. although i'm a sucker for With Twilight as My Guide. so bad ass
si no les gusta bedlam
NO ENTIENDEN THE MARS VOLTA.
es un buen disco y es diferente, esa es la mentalidad de la banda: mutar.
dios bendiga a de mars bolta loco!!!
Glad to see many other Porcupine Tree fans out there! TMV and Porcupine Tree are both two of the most fantastic bands out there, some of the rarely good modern prog.
'A story teeth rotted for' off omar's 'absence makes the heart grow fungus'.
if you all havent already noticed. great song
love that artwork background!! sick
Love this sound much better than Amp or Bedlam. Great move retiring Paul and Adrian. Sometimes less is more.
I like how this song is about Cedric's idea on what would happen if McCain was elected.
es muy buena banda y como dices ellos son los que llevan el legado de led zeppelin
love this song..want that background!!
God I love this song... It's so damn beautiful =)
"Taking all the hostages into the oval office
Draw the curtains and pull the trigger softly"
Fuckin' mental!

i fuckin love this band. omar's a modernday Mingus.
I agree, love Bedlam.
@ChaostheClown It's not spam. I just searched them on UA-cam, and they're really good. They're definitely worth checking out. Like a softer Mars Volta.
I'd storm the white house with this song screaming in my head.
@sprackles this song is about what cedric would do if the republicans win the elections, you its like a "what if...". its in an interview. sorry for my bad english

ohhh my god a sample from amthgf!!! a story teeth rooted for damn i want this album now!!!

omar's side project is way more experimental and musically interesting
But I do really like this song/parts of the new album for what it is.
de-loused is untouchable
please dont act like your opinion is anywhere close to that of an artist and their song. and that goes for all of you.
@MrKillaknot actulyy this beat is a bit of a polyrythem count out the intro and follow the snare and cymbal work they are in diffrent time sigs.
Ah, well, thanks anyway. But I did what you said and looked it up on wiki. Here's the info.
Teflon includes parts from the song "A Story Teeth Rotted For" on Omar's solo album "Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fungus".
thank you i found it yet :D
Omars guitar work is like if robert fripp colided with eddie hazel and john mclauglin, fuckin brilliant
wow! yo apenas vengo conosiendo a la banda y mi primera impresión hasta ahora es que son como una banda hija de led zeppelin lo cual me encanta!!!! sin palabras !!!!!!
it kicks major ass.
for all you haterz !!!! YOU ARE LOST !!
i am totally feeling these tracks !!!
and honestly.... cedric can not make his lyrics anymore simpler for the layman as this....... all of the clues have been laid out since ATDI.
god i hope this song doesn't reach the airwaves.
It's a mystery. Bedlam is SICK!
Peace.
Haha this basically sums it up in words that everyone can understand.
Who cares if it's commercial??!!?? It's a great song/album so why does it matter? They have ALWAYS said that they work in the "pop format". let the wheels burn
let the wheels burn
stack the tires to the neck with the body inside
i don't know what the hell it meens.... but i fucking luv it!!!!

Blackest Eyes (Kicks ace)
Buena Pieza!
don't forget the ever surprising Mastodon :D

Then again thats my opinion. I love all their albums (well, not so into Bedlam in Goliath) and this new one is sounding pretty good.
The Mars Volts feels like MDMA and 2CB.
@asspills Even the most gifted drummers don't just chug out insanely fast beats every song. The most talented drummers know how to restrain themselves in order to fit the feel of the song.
Really? Wow...wait now that I think about it I do remember watching an interview about him saying that. Wow
If anything the new album, in a word, sounds "contained" compared to past works, especially Bedlam, theres nothing wrong with it at all, its just people being douches for something "changing" that isn't really changing other than their perceived audio aesthetics for something.
@jmhemmis0 It's like Rush meets Pink Floyd.
i luld
i have said it before I will say it again: Cedric is a fucking beast. Freddy Mercury, Robert Plant, on that level
wow
@jmhemmis0 Haha I gave up even trying to relate anyone to Floyd anymore. However, I do believe that Cedric Bixler would do a mean Robert Plant impersonation, and that the ideal Zeppelin cover band would be a conglomeration of Mars Volta & Mastodon band members.
It took me a while to get into it, but I love noctourniquet.
I saw TMV open for SOAD... great show! But TMV and PT would be epic!
they matured
It's stacking tires over a person and lighting it on fire.
If you read the interviews with Steven Wilson, You will know what to steven wilson really likes the musical work of Mars Volta
@deigam no comparison at all. Agreed.
