Backpacking the Black Forest Trail, Pennsylvania

  • The Black Forest Trail is one of the hardest trails in PA. Scenic views and overlooks of Pine Creek, plenty of water and great campsites. This place is pretty darn good for Pennsylvania. For beginners give yourself 4 days to complete it and go clockwise. It can easily be done in 3 full days. It's rough in 2 days but obviously we were able to do it. This trail also connects to the West Rim and Susquahannock Trail Systems if you really want to make a huge trip out of it.
    Guidebook with maps: amzn.to/2Oqje3e
Parking Lot: 41.525296, -77.598465 Pretty big lot, don't block the driveway of the building up 100 feet.
Day 1: 23.7 Stayed next to Little Slate Run. There is a giant campsite at the fork at the bottom of the hill if that site is taken go up about 200 feet and there another site.
    Day 2: 18.6 miles
Go get a burger at the Black Forest Inn. Great service. Reasonable prices. The special of the day was a 1/2lb burger and fries for $8.99. I recommend the Black Forest Burger.

I did this trail at 18 years old and was beat on the Eastern section but still finished. I just the completed the trail again at 50 (counter clockwise) with my 18 year old son on father's day 2018. Best father's day gift ever. Thanks for all the ride alongs on the trails with your vids. Please keep them coming. See you on the trail.

Frozen, I just completed the Black Forest trail a couple of weeks ago, doing it in 4 day. It was really hot 🔥 so the stream crossings were refreshing. As I'm on the trai, I was remembering that you completed this in 2 days. Are you kidding me!!! Mad respect bro! That was a hard trail.

I used to get a periodic foot and knee pain and couldn't figure it out until I switched to Hoka Speedgoat2 runners and realized that Altras were the source. Basically that they're cheaply made and not a zero drop issue.

It's a great trail. I've hiked it several times. The entire trail is part of the black forest 100k run they have in Oct. It's a 62 mile run. Basically you run 10 miles to the BFT, run the entire loop, than do the 10 miles back to the starting line. I think you have 19 hours to complete it.

Logging or burn area with a man door that you pointed to. They fence it off and drive out any deer so it has a chance to come back or deer will eat all the tender new trees. There's a lot of logging of State Forest and State Game lands over that way.

So - just attempted to hike the loop this weekend and could not find the trail where it crosses Naval Run and starts steeply heading up. I didn't know if you had any video on that spot somewhere? All we could find was the yellow trail that went into a campground and if we continued on naval run trail it looked to turn into pine trail and another. We wound up quitting early - trying to solve the mystery haha

35:21 is a deer exclusion fence. The idea is to keep deer out so saplings, which deer find quite tasty, can grow unimpeded and regenerate the forest. They're pretty common in state forest and state game lands in northern PA.

  • @fireyourrocketts

I enjoy so much when you are climbing, filming and talking and saying that is hard to do so and talk at same time, I can not even think straight when climbing like that before but then again I am 0ver 70 pounds of my normal weight, so no wonder while trying to do Whitney I could only do 10 to 20 steps and had to stop to catch my breath for 2 to 5 min. Doctor told me taxing your heart like that can leave you dead in the mountain. I went to a cardiologist back in 2016 after I passed out for a minute after forcing myself to keep an steady slow climbing rate at Frenchman Mountain in Las Vegas; tests came out normal but I swear I thought I was going to check out right there! the thing is, if I can not climb what is the purpose of hiking? It is not so much fun to hike straight terrain, for as hard as climbing is on the body for us not fitted folks out there, I do not see other way to get fit or not to completely rust other than pushing those climbs! I can't really wait to be able to do so after fixing this darn knee because not being able to hike out have left me with only possibility of canoeing but only as much as my knee can take it which is not too much right now! -- At the end of the video I was wondering if you considered using waterproof socks and how would they perform in a hike this long, it may make a difference blister wise maybe? i am just ordering couple pairs to use when canoeing with my Klein water sandals; will try and see how it goes in my next plan trip 24 miles out and back on Nevada/Arizona Black canyon. Hopefully soon.

    • @FrozensAdventures
      @FrozensAdventures  6 років тому

I have waterproof socks I use in my trail runners for snow. I wouldn't use them for normal trails like this one. You just have to deal with wet feet. I didn't notice the blister until the 2nd day. Didn't air out my feet for lunch the first. It was my fault. If something is waterproof that just means sweat wont dry.

Other two times were flatter just after bridge and in distance. Plenty of observable claw marks, craziest was right on tree behind the hunting lodge.
Plenty of rattlesnakes on trail each time too in middle of path, almost certain to see some at 6 or 6.15 sunning themselves on the rocks at the vista in addition.

Altra Lonepeak 3.5's. Been great but had to glue my insole down.

Great job getting it done in 2! Now that you've done the BFT more than once, what starting point do you prefer? And clockwise or counter clockwise? Thanks!

Clockwise for an easier hike. I like where I started the first time at the tavern and main parking lot.

I'd suggest doing an overnight with a friend first. Head on up to your local REI they will be able to help you and when you are ready I have plenty of gear list videos dating back all the way to when I first started you can reference as well.

Did you ever do any testing on your tarp? I had a similar issue with mine and couldn't find a leak even after filling it up and holding it like a sack. Hasn't leaked since. Of course when it was dripping, I didn't take the time to inspect and ended up putting the tarp over the RL to get a steeper angle and prevent pooling. Thinking back though, it could have been the rain running down my suspension (which was touching the inside top of the tarp since it was a tight hang ) and then running down the inside to the center before dripping down.

I got to test it at the meetup last weekend it rained really hard. No water. I'm assuming it was from rain blowing under the RL because I always angle my head end down. Don't think it's a real issue. I was just freaking out about it.

PLEASE tell us what you do between hikes to go from dying in in three days to killing it in two. I’ve had one of those ready to tap out moments and need a little inspiration.

Great hike so far. I need to start pushing myself like that for my JMT next year. I'm @ the 31 minute mark and thought I'd pause and comment.. You said your trying to leave no trace and there's already a fire pit and your by a creek and you just don't do that. Sorry man I just thought that was kinda funny. I'm really thinking you need to hike and camp with me and my buddies. We know how to start fires even when things are soggy. Buhahahahaha ;-) All seriousness though, I'm going to have to start going without a fire and learn that It'll just tire me out more gathering wood, etc. Save my energy.

I have no problems starting fires. I just don't like doing it because I'm usually tired when I get to camp. I don't like fires by water sources.

I know you do. Years back you made a video about making fires didn't you? I guess my humor isn't the best. Not sure why you don't like fires by water sources. Isn't that the best place? From what I've learned, you can douse the fire and make sure its out. That's the most important thing, so I thought.

Dry your feet out at lunch and use some foot balm to keep cracking at bay.

Do you have problems with the insoles in your lone peaks moving when they get wet? I had to glue the insoles in on my lone peaks to stop them from moving when they get wet.
