  • Scrape off wet paint to start fresh or make corrections when all else fails. In this video you will see how to paint a light filled English scene. First I scraped off a wet layer of paint to make a fresh start. Then created a scene filled with color and light in a loose, quick Impressionist style approach.

    Very useful demo, Malcolm. Good to know that one doesn't have to tear up one's paper and start afresh! Thank you

    Love the way you brought this to life. I was waiting for the little person again, they must have been around the corner or gone for a swim. I’m a warercolourist but am aching to start oils. SO… I’ve e just got my order (thanks to you) of Georgian water mixables. They’re sitting here looking at me, temptingly…. all shiny and new. When will I have the courage to get stuck in? I have no excuse as I ordered the paper as well. 😉

    Hi Malcom, I just discovered your channel yesterday and I kept watching your different videos. It is so many to learn. Thank you 😊
    One silly question for you, may I know what brand is your blue tape , I can’t find a good one , always my paper is damaged by the tape 😅

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  Рік тому +1

      Thank you. Yes the tape is hard to find but I get it at an art supply store. Brand is AItezze . Also use paper suited for painting like watercolor paper or paper made for oils. Regular drawing paper often tears.

    I much enjoyed that demonstration Malcolm. A beautiful painting of a lovely little cottage/stream. Learned quite a lot, with that video. That helps me so much, Thanks. I have gotten into trouble a few times when I have ended up trying to place darker paint strokes for elongated structures like (Pergolas & towers) over a layer of thick light paint (I forgot what you had said in a video where you mentioned to paint darker shapes larger than they actually are to then cut into those shapes to paint a light background). So as you say those cases, much easier to scrape part/whole area off. Rather than struggle with it.
    I had a quick question. Based on your experience, is it possible for subsequent layers of Oil Paint to darken more, the thicker you layer it?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 роки тому

      Darken as it dries? Or same color gets darker when painted thicker?

    • @theponderingpilgrim4342
      @theponderingpilgrim4342 2 роки тому

      @@MalcolmDeweyHi Malcolm,
      It seems to be darkening due to thicker layers of paint that I have added, as I have noticed it soon afterwards.
      Is this something which could vary depending on which colour/combination of colours I am applying to the surface?

    Hi! When you mix colors with your brush on palette are you wiping your brush clean before mixing the next color?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 роки тому

      Yes unless the colors are very similar in value + hue. Wiping off the brush is done every couple of strokes usually.

    Good to know that even professionals scrape off , I always think it feels like cheating and something to pretend I've not done 😀 I've just entered my first competition , a very small local gallery , they shortlist the ones they like and pick a winner who gets £1000 . Obviously I'm my head I'm already preparing my acceptance speech and spending the money but in real life if I get shortlisted I'll be over the moon as I'll be up against professional painters and painters who've been painting for ages and here's me who has been painting for two years still has trouble with trees . I'll let you know what happens, winner presentation in August so a while yet .
