  • How to paint a classic scene from Holland - Clouds, water and windmills. Something different for me, but as I was testing Rembrandt oil paints I decided to do an impression of this scene. Sit back and watch the preparation in watercolors then the completion in oils.

Always something new to pick up, and keep in mind for future projects like this one with sky, clouds and water and how one can work around them. Flexibility to minimize details, adjust the size, and colours too.Thank you.

I really liked that you made your own changes to the reference photo. Someone once told me that we are not photocopiers; art is about making something our own. I love the looseness of your version of it. Thank you for sharing the tips as you went along. They make it easier to get the colours right.

@@MalcolmDewey yes, it is nice as is. That said, it has one, for me, terrible mistake in it composition. Probably because you little about windmill nor what it does when hell breaks loose with regards to wind/storms/millers. The position of the nearest, most important mill is off by about 30 degrees. That is a big, disaster waiting to happen, no-no.
Could someone buy this? Sure, just not by someone who has ever visited the Netherlands.
It is a criticism of your work. What someone doesn't know can't be criticised. Thus the explanation why it wouldn't work.

Great tutorial, Malcolm! I really enjoyed the subject matter and that you took artistic license and added sun although the reference was kind of dreary (to my way of thinking). Many photos have a very "flat" light so I always find it a challenge to add sun and shadows when I can't really see them with my eyes in the photo. But you always seem to find the light so I thoroughly enjoy hearing what is running through your mind. So many lessons learned in this video on how to paint clouds, water, cool and warm temps, distinct and blurred strokes, etc. Thanks so much!

What a lovely piece! Yes, quite different than your usual work. Loved your analysis & ultimate end results. It still looked like one of yours, maybe a little muted, but Rembrandt would be pleased. Don’t know how I missed this one…but glad to have seen it now.❤
