  • See a full review on Zen Art Supplies oil paints. I test the Essential Palette of oils with a quick landscape sketch. This full demonstration painting shows my favorite technique in oil painting. The oil sketch is great for testing out a subject or idea. Plus the result is often pleasing because there are no fussy details. Perfect for a strong and simple painting composition.

    everything you do is completely my thing. big blocks of colour make sense in a composition, shapes are kept simple to reduce it to the core or "idea" of the object, which i love. paintings that are too real take away imagination and truth of the meaning of the essence of things. i wish u were here in austria to teach me, I just can´t stop fideling around trying to "perfect" my paintings and end up like my "art": messy, muddy and unsatisfied. XD

    Lovely outcome. The paints look so buttery and easy to use too. I was very interested to see how you mixed burnt sienna. I'm always diving onto the internet to find how to make colours I don't have. Maybe there's an idea for a future class! Ha.

    As I sit here in North America with my puppy in my lap warming me up I saw you in your short sleeve T-shirt. I thought what? Then oh it’s late spring in South Africa and it’s warm there. LOL.

    So pretty! I love the Zen paints, I've been using them for a while. Really nice thing is that they are non-toxic. It's windy a lot where I live so I can't always have the windows open, very nice not to worry about ventilation!

    Fantastic as always! How did colours look when the painting had time to dry?

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 роки тому

      So far quite normal. However I always use retouch varnish once dry to restore the depth to dark shapes.

    Hello Malcolm. I have just started painting a few months ago and have been using acrylics, specifically, Golden Heavy Body. I really didn't know, and honestly still don't, which medium is best for me. Do you think oils are easier to learn with or what would you suggest? Thanks for your videos. They are really helping me.

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 роки тому +1

      Starting with acrylics is fine. There are a few less things to worry about than oils as a beginner. Use the time to learn the big basics - shapes, values and brushwork. However after six months consider bringing oils into your work. A good way is to paint oils over dry acrylic. In this way you start with one layer of oils to add the punchy colors. As your confidence grows you will start layers oils over oils. Oils are liberating in many ways and you will not regret it, but make it a transition process.

      @@MalcolmDewey thank you so much for your reply. Your advice is very much appreciated. If you can think of anything else a beginner needs to know please advise because it is not coming easily. Thank you!

      I have a course called From Acrylics to Oil Painting in 5 Steps. You can find it on my website under painting courses. It may be handy to try out the process.
