Hello Gary, I drive a 2005 Toyota Camry with a 1mz Fe engine and a U151E transmission. I always have sluggish or almost no respond forward movement in Drive in the morning or when engine is cold. But when engine warms up well for up to 45 minutes, forward gears moves perfectly fine. Reverse works great regardless the temperature. This problem only happens whenever engine is cold and works great once warmed up. Transmission shifts smoothly. Scanned with Kdiag, no transmission error code. Then scanned with ELM327 got P3708. Almost 98% of mechanics runs away from this transmission. But watching your great video enlightened me and shed light on things that they fail to do on the transmission Hope you respond to my message. Thanks Gary.
Thanks for your response, Gary. I’ve manually tested all the forward gears, and they all exhibit the same issue. When the engine is cold, the forward gears are sluggish, but once the engine warms up, they work perfectly fine. However, after parking for about two to three hours and the engine cools down, the sluggish behavior returns in all forward gears except reverse. Here’s an important observation: When the engine is cold, if I tap the accelerator quickly and suddenly (like for a quick movement to make the front tyres spin), the vehicle acts as if it wants to jump forward but then doesn’t. On the other hand, if I accelerate gradually while cold, the vehicle doesn’t move at all except I try that quick tap on the accelerator. Once the engine warms up, performing that same quick accelerator tap causes the vehicle to actually jump forward as expected. I hope this helps clarify the situation. Please let me know what you think!
I'm trying to figure out this same issue! On a cold start super delayed engagement into drive, same with all the other forward gears. (Reverse works normally) I've found if I rev the engine up to 3000-4000 rpms and hold at that RPM the van slowly slips into gear. Would love to figure this out too
@@GaryFerraro after getting the car into drive the transmission works flawlessly. If I restart the car after a short stop the transmission doesn't have the delay issue but the longer is cools the worse it gets. This is in a tropical climate by the way. Other information, the person I recently bought it from was running a stop leak additive. It looked like the leak was coming from the pan so I replaced the gasket and filter and refilled the transmission with maxlife ATF. The old fluid was dark and had a decent amount of clutch material on the magnet and pan, but no big flakes. Turns out the slow leak is coming from the flywheel access plate. I am 90% sure the transmission fluid level is correct, I followed the procedure, though it's tough to get an exact measurement on these dipsticks. The delayed engagement issue started happening about a week after the fluid swap, not immediately after, so it's hard to tell if that's related. The van is a 2005 sienna with 140k. Thank you so much Gary! Most of the mechanics here in Puerto Rico are part swappers so I really appreciate your diagnosis help.
Please my Lexus RX 330 has a problem, once the transmission gets cold and I put it on drive, the car doesn’t move until I left it heat up, when the issue started it takes a few minutes but now it takes about an hour before the the drive moves, although reverse works perfectly fine.

Hi Gary! In your experience, what would suddenly cause no reverse? I have a 2007 Toyota Sienna with the U151E that suddenly lost reverse. Worked one day, sat overnight, lost reverse the next morning. It was also leaking trans fluid due to a bad trans fluid pan gasket. I pulled the trans fluid pan and did a flush and fill and changed the filter. Fluid looked brown and burnt and there were some sparkles, but no chunks of metal nor was there much metal material on the magnets. Still no reverse after flushing and filling the fluid. It doesn't move forward or back in neutral and I seem to have all forward gears in Drive. I also have a P0741 for Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off.
Thanks for the informative video. I'm working on a 2007 RX350 with a u151f. I rebuild the unit also the valve body with new sonnax valves, with brand new oe solenoid that you mentioned, brand new internal harness, brand new ecu. Reset the adapters as you mentioned, get it to work at one point around 150 to 160 degrees trans temp there after it start to do crazy different things, like harsh 1-2, flares 2-3, bind 3-4 or neutral out in combination, to the point that have no foward movement at all. Stop the vehicle, cycle the and transmission slips all gears till stop foward movement again. Any ideas 💡 🤔 would be appreciated. Thanks
@@GaryFerraro Thanks for the quick response. I drove it this morning to monitor different temperature and cold no problems at all, it works the way it should. After this happens I stopped driving because I don't want to burn the unit again.
@@GaryFerraro Hello. Just an update. I replaced the input speed sensor because I heard this sensors can cause some issues and not giving you a code. I thought that was the fix but all it did was the same thing but later in temperature. In other words, it started to act up after 168* and quit moving at 190*. Shift it to reverse and work, back to drive no movement, put it in park wait a minute, put it in drive and had foward, went around the block, started slipping, flaring neutral out again, put it in park wait a minute , back to drive and got foward again and doing the same thing... Any clues?
Hi Gary. Thanks for this good advice! I had put a junkyard transmission in a 2006 Sienna (the original one leaked all the fluid from torque converter seal and burned out). The van drove perfect with the "new" transmission. Drove it for several weeks, with literally zero issues. All of a sudden the other day I come out, and the shifter goes through all the gears, and literally ZERO transmission response. Nothing whatsoever. I confirmed the shift linkage is working perfectly. And there's fluid in the tranny. Is this something that could be explained by a solenoid?? Racking my brain here, not making any sense to me.....thanks!!! Nelson
@@GaryFerraro Nothing at all. And in fact I just pulled one of the tranny fluid lines that goes to the radiator, with the engine running, and went through "the gears," and no fluid came out of the hose at all. Does this mean pump not working? Is a teardown the only approach at this point? I know nothing about transmissions internally and I'm starting to realize the cons of throwing in a junkyard part....
I'm just thinking what I did, the last thing I did to the van was pull out the passenger axle to replace the axle seal. But that wouldn't cause any issue. And it backed out of the driveway just fine. Now it's stuck parked in the street LOL. I did also change the filter when I first put in the tranny. Maybe an issue with the filter I put in? I'm just trying to figure out what could have caused this or if it's just total "coincidence"
We have a 2005 AWD rx330 with the u151 trans. There is a strange shutter/hard shift (not flair) from 2-3 under hard acceleration, and very rarely from 1-2 and that's under lighter load. Hey Gary, you make some wonderful videos and appreciate your expertise. I’m curious to what your opinion is about what is the best transmission filter.
Thanks for the info and video Gary. You recommend new solenoids as part of an overhaul, but can the solenoids be replaced without an overhaul or is that a futile effort to correct a 2-3 flare? We'll miss you next weekend but looking forward to your next video!
Solenoids can be replaced just by dropping the valvebody, you could certainly try that first and do a memory reset, if problem is still there or comes back, probably something internal also

Thanks so much for your content! I am a auto repair tech and I’m looking to buy an older Toyota Highlander with this transmission. I still have an 06 RAV4, 4 cylinder which either needs a torque converter or transmission (u140f). The RAV4 would shift hard 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. About a week later, I was headed to work and 5min in, I went to accelerate up a slight hill and it made a pop noise and then a whining noise (relative to engine speed) I lost power to the transmission. After shutting off the engine a while, I was able to move it but I had to push the transfer case lock button. I had done fluid and filter changes a few months previously and a year before that. Thanks again Gary, great information here!
Bill K Thank you
Hello Gary,
I drive a 2005 Toyota Camry with a 1mz Fe engine and a U151E transmission.
But watching your great video enlightened me and shed light on things that they fail to do on the transmission
Hope you respond to my message.
Thanks Gary.
question, when the car does not move cold, can you put the car into manual 1 to see if it moves
Here’s an important observation:
When the engine is cold, if I tap the accelerator quickly and suddenly (like for a quick movement to make the front tyres spin), the vehicle acts as if it wants to jump forward but then doesn’t.
(Reverse works normally)
I've found if I rev the engine up to 3000-4000 rpms and hold at that RPM the van slowly slips into gear.
Would love to figure this out too
@@Saladranchboi when hot it's ok
Check your transmission fluid level cold and hot. I had similar and the fluid was low by 1qt. Of course it could be much worse but start there.

how to complete the memory reset? How critical is memory reset?
If this happened suddenly, something probably broke or snapped off inside the trans. With a P0741 code, your going to need an overhaul anyway
Gary do I have to drop the valve body down to change the sl2 solenoid, thanks for all the information you've given me
Yes, would have to come down, i wouldn't hang it down because there are some seals that can fall out of place

Nelson
Any Noises coming from the trans?
@@GaryFerraro Nothing at all. And in fact I just pulled one of the tranny fluid lines that goes to the radiator, with the engine running, and went through "the gears," and no fluid came out of the hose at all. Now it's stuck parked in the street LOL. I did also change the filter when I first put in the tranny. Maybe an issue with the filter I put in? In the shop they make the flush and change oil but they told me there is not possible to adapt/reset the ECU and the problem is still here. Can you tell me if they tricked me ?
There actually is a common problem with 2005 to 2007 camry's with a harsh 5-4 downshift. The problem is a faulty SLT solenoid. The SLT solenoid is the prssure solenoid
@@GaryFerraro Thank you Gary, my i also ask you to tell me the part number and the manufacturer of the STL solenoid ? I have trouble to find the part. Thank you.
@@Mrc0llmY I only use OEM, did you try the dealer?
@@GaryFerraro I did, they told me that the do not selling separate solenoids, only the whole hydraulic set...maybe i have to order them from US...And could you please tell me the part number ?
@@Mrc0llmY ok, i have to get it from my supplier tomorrow
I have a 2004 Sienna that feels like the brakes are on when in reverse. Brakes are free and trans fluid looks clean. Any recommendations?
By chance does the car creep forward in neutral. or is neutral ok
neutral is ok. I can push is back and forth. Forward moves fine.
@@GaryFerraro I feel as though it's a solenoid issue.
@@MarkDavidFoster What is the condition of the fluid? How does this work forward?
@@GaryFerraro fluid is clean. Moves forward fine.
Gary i need help i need to know where i can get a scan tool to do a memory reset on the PCM ad adaptive shifting
Dave Davis How much do you want to spend?
@@GaryFerraro i dont want to spend top dollar i just need one that is capable of the shift adapt reset ... any recommendations ?
Dave Davis You may want to look into an Autel scan tool. They have many different products and the prices vary.
Dave Davis Happy Holidays Dave
@@GaryFerraro you too Gary i ended up purchasing the Autel MK808 MAXICOM
Hi. My car 2011 5speed toyota kluger has problems whem 2nd to 3rd is flare to shifting only when hot comdition, cold is ok.
also down shift 3rd to 2nd slight bump not all the time it's occasional when hot also. I think this is what you explained most likely solenoids. do you think it is worth changing solenoids SL1,SL2,SL3 and SLT? i will costly but i want to fix this issues.
I also have scan tools to rest memory, reset but happed problem, please give advise.
Thanks
Most of the time the solenoids are the problem of course without me checking can't say for sure. Does the fluid look ok?
i had flushed fluid and changed filter as well. my plan is change solenoids first, can you able to recommend supplier? or just jet it from the Genuine.
you should up grade to a better video quality and more close up shots!
As always, A+ for the video!
I should add...Transmission model U151F, its actually a 2004 V6

when you say memory reset. do you mean reset the whole car computer
If you have a scan tool and go into transmission, there is an option of doing the memory reset, I believe it's just for the trans
@@GaryFerraro ok thanks
@@GaryFerraro hi,
I have bought a Toyota Alphard JDM that has a U151F and since I have it the gearbox was slugging 2nd-3rd gear and sometimes 3rd-4th gear. The car has 60k and has never been oil changed before.
I have changed the oil hoping that will solve the issues. After that the gearbox was working ok with intermittent slugging 2nd-3rd gear.
Now after aprox 300 miles is slugging in all the gears and it's making the car very difficult to drive. Could you please recommend what to do as I am a mechanic but I haven't worked on any automatic gearboxes before. I did a memory reset also and didn't help either. Thank you for your help.
@@customerservicesengravemea4861 If memory reset did nothing, you probably have internal problem. Any Codes?
@@GaryFerraro no fault codes on normal scanning. I've tried in check mode to see if something comes up but still nothing. It's just rev to 3000-3500rpm to change the gears.

My sienna 2004 model has slip or drive problem only reverse works what can I do or where can I buy another gear box . Am in Rwanda
Garbage transmissions. Have the U151E in Rav4, junk, 2009 U151F junk. Lexus has really gone down hill with quality. The RX350 makes no less than 3 weird noises when driving. And when it got super cold last year it shuddered and made such a horrible noise I thought I wouldn't make it home. During the warmer times it just makes the noises but won't downshift when floored unless it is warmed up a bit. Even if it is 90 out. All around terrible transmissions. The one in my ISF I beat on it and it never skips a beat.
Porfavor traducirlo al castellano o español.
Get a reman and not worry about it.
i do reman valvebodies now
@GaryFerraro I wish there was some decent places around me. I am left with 2 options new for $8500 or buy a reman from some place out of state, have someone install it and cross my fingers. Lexus
wants 2700 without shipping on a reman with a 12 month 12,000 warranty. My transmission and motor acted up as soon as I bought it from a Lexus dealership used with 83k miles on all dealer maintained and 2 owner. I got in touch with the previous owner and they said it never gave them any problems. Odd how 2 months after it sat and I bought it it's junk. Luck of the draw to have both major components having major problems. Thanks for the insightful video.
