I have one, did the firmware update and it is working beautifully!! Sharp, quick, clean, light, affordable! That’s awesome in my books!
Recently picked up a A7iii with this lens. And i absolutely agree with you, this lens is perfect! Also, you have an amazing presentation and wish you the best in this channel.
Thank you so much Simon!!! Appreciate you being a part of the channel
I need Tamron's 16-35 and 70-200 now. Love my 28-75.
14-28mm and 75-200 are more perfection.
Tamron is releasing their 17-28 this summer! woopwoop
Man i wish they can create 1 lens for all this focal length lol
Does this lens have Sony Eye autofocus?
I've been looking to upgrade from my old Rebel t5i for a while, so I just bought this lens with the sony a7III yesterday! This lens was one of the main reasons I got the sony over the Nikon z or canon R series mirrorless. I'm so glad it's been so well reviewed!
My favorite lens for my A7III. Shot a whole wedding on Saturday without taking it off of my camera 👍
Jon Wyatt did u use a flash with the camera and lens for the wedding
Nope. I was just shooting video though.
@@JonWyattMedia did you find it was a fast enough lens at 2.8 for all your lowlight situations on the a7iii?
Erick Lopez Yep! I also had a Sony A6300 with a couple Sigma primes in my bag just in case, but f2.8 is enough for pretty much everything. I do love the look of primes for detail shots though. I’ll usually use them with my Rhino slider for things like that.
Does this have an internal zoom? We need something that works will a gimbal since I don't have steady hands.
Now we need a matching Tamron 70-200 or 75-210 f2.8.
Just had to say, i actually watch a lot of your videos because i know the info is reliable and honest!
Iv never commented but i always watch, so i had to say it now, Thank you for what you do :)
from what I have seen from reviews and videos including this one, it's allot more than just a walk around lens. yes it is plastic, but plastic doesn't mean cheap or badly built. plastic could last just as long as metal, and in some respects might handle a drop even better than metal will, as far as image quality it seems like 97% of the GM. and really if a good photographer took two identical images with the Tamron and GM, not to many people would be able to pick which images was taken with which lens. especially if the images were both worked on in post. I own the old Tamron 24/70 f2.8 VC Canon mount. and I have always been very happy with the image quality. and I wouldn't hesitate to buy this new Tamron. to me the fact that it is 550g is a huge advantage over the GM. not just for carrying all day, but also for using it with a gimbal for video, and it close focuses allot closer than the GM. and at almost a 3rd of the price of the GM it's a no brainer for allot of people. personally I chose to keep my native glass small for now, because I also use adapted fast glass, so the Tamron is perfect, I wish you would do a video comparing it to the GM. for video and stills. and keep the review just focused on image quality. because we already know the GM is built stronger, but actually with the 24/70 GM I have been hearing in posts some people saying after a little over a year of owning the lens. the focus ring is getting out of shape and coming off, which brings me to a final point. I have had my Tamron 24/70 f2.8 VC since it came out around 6 years ago, the focus ring is still like new, and I have had no issues with the lens. and the Sony has a one year warranty, and Tamron in the US has a 6 year warranty, and no I have nothing to do with the Tamron company. I just like it when a 3rd party company gives us a great option.
Tamron has a weird bokeh, the rest is gold for this price.
Well put. I get tired of the "cheap plastic" critiques. Yes, it means cheap. No, it doesnt mean poorly built or low quality
Who is picking one up? By the way, I'm on the way to Hawaii for some awesome stuff so follow me on insta instagram.com/LearningCameras for the details!
Great video. Before this lens was released I bought the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 for Canon from eBay for less than $100. I use it on my A7ii with the Neewer AF adapter. AF is fast and accurate. The lens is quite sharp. I really like the focal lengths and aperture.
Does the lens work with continuous af in video?
Yes and no. It doesn't do continuous AF by itself. However, I assigned the AEL button to do Focus. So, with AF-C set and as long as I hold down the AEL button it does continuous focus. It works with Center, Flexible, and Wide focus mode. It's slow but it works.
I think the new Viltrox adapter can do it, but I don't have that adapter. You can watch this video by XroPhoto and see what you think:

Here are some out-of-camera JPEGs without any touchups if you care to look at. All with auto-focus:

Just received my 28-75mm last week. Great lens and I have been very happy with it.
Perfect review! It's my next lens to buy
I shoot with an a7iii and I have this lens as well, Your review is spot on! I couldn't agree more with everything you said
Hi this is good to debate. Please explain ur view.
After many years of using only primes, I tried this lens and was surprised as to the quality. It's now my #1 walk-around piece of glass for the A7RIII. Highly recommended. Thanks for your great review.
Awesome! Yeah, I can't go back to an F4 so it's either 2.8 zooms or primes. Appreciate that!
Dan, Beautifully done video. This looks to be a an almost "must purchase" lens. Thanks for the review
I love mine, no brainer really for the price. Takes a little getting use to with the front ring being the zoom, but after a day or 2 it is “normal”. I am a professional by the way and use this on professional jobs.
ekphotography what kind of photography do you do...is it fast enough for a wedding
Thanks. For the review. I’m going to get one soon. I have to walk about a lot hunting locations so the size and weight are a big deal for me.
Awesome video! Thanks for video and photo examples - nice work 🙌
I got mine last week and shoot my first wedding on Saturday with it. It’s a crazy lens for the price. You forget to mention that it take very good close shot nearly macro shot. It’s very useful for ring and details during wedding when you don’t have macro lens. Worth the price. Will try in video soon. But for still it’s a no brainer and for who start with sony and need a first lens, it’s the one to choose. Thanks for your video.
Awesome info! I just ordered this lens and an A7iii. I can't wait to use them.
I bought mine and absolutely love it on my Sony A7 III.. no regrets what so ever.. I do wish the focusing ring was a bit easier to turn and wasn't backwards from what i'm used to.. but the image quality is stunning.
Love the background music added in. Great video thank you for the review !
How to shoot with manual focus on video ? since it doesn't have a switch for it
You have to disable AF in the camera. The A7III allows you to program that to a button
awesome review man ! i freaking love this lens and i can't wait to get my hands on it. i also love the videos you shot , the transitions are on point
Thank you so much Shane!!!
Really intrigued by this lens. I do a lot of low light photography in clubs/event and would love to know how the autofocus holds up in those situations.
This video makes me bought it immediately.... I hope it works as good as you show us in the video
Amazing review, thank you!
Loving the V-Drums in the foreground 😉
Nice overview of the lens too 👌
Your vids are so clean. Thanks for helping me pull the trigger on this baby
Awesome! Thanks
Epic B-roll & Review!... Will be getting this for sure.
ive used this lens and i can say its ALOT more softer than the Gmaster 24-70.
Id get the tamron if youre a hobbyist but if youre a true professional id go with the Gmaster.
Great looking footage out of this bugger. I've been looking for a zoom lens for some running and gunning doc-style filming and I think this might be the winner. Cheers!
Love the Lincoln Memorial photo at 4:25!
nice work Dan, thanks for your effort.
Just got it (after waiting on my order for a looong time!)
I'm looking forward to when I can get out of the house again and testing it out!
I would like a Tamron 70-200 f4 or f2.8 for my Sony :(
The Tamron 70-200 f2.8 is a great lens. If you decide to get it, make sure you calibrate it for use with your Sony body. It may not be tack sharp straight out of the box. At least, this was my experience. However, it may not be yours.
@@deanjones2525 I was thinking abouat a version dedicated to Sony FE mount. Thanks for the advice.
@@deanjones2525 Calibrate? Guess you are referring to an Amount version.
Also yes it is a nice lens but the severe focus breathing at normal portrait range was not acceptable for me.
My Go To on my D750 is my Nikon 24-70 2.8. I LOVE that lens. I always have a A73 and an a6500 in my bag for my day to day routine, but currently have only primes for it. After watching this and a bunch of other reviews, I think this lens is coming up in the very near future for those two bodies, because I just can't justify a GMaster or even the Sigma right now. Awesome review thanks!
Those shots are impressive... I've been researching lenses mostly for video as my beloved Sigm Art lenses are just too loud for video when using the MC-11. Been hearing great things about the Tamron. Just ordered one today. Can't wait!
Awesome!!!
8:09 100%. Im giving you a thumbs up for that haha. Thanks for the video!
hahaha, thanks!
Glad to see you're expanding more of your videos to the outdoors.
Liking that intro to the vid.
What slider are you using? Didn't spot it in your kit list.
Thanks! It's the edelkrone SliderOne Pro. Just got it in and tested it out in Colorado
Great video! Really informative. I've been on the fence for what lens to upgrade with for my A7III. Thank you
Love it! Great review and the music is awesome and way you put this together makes it easy to watch a review video. Can you share where you got the transition s from?
I'll be receiving my A7III in a couple of weeks and I think this will be the first lens I buy. It'll probably be this and then the Sony 85mm 1.8
Can't recommend the 85mm 1.8 enough. Great bang for buck, love it.
1991ClarkJames couldn’t agree more. I honestly can’t believe how good this lens is for the money. Even for $1000, this lens would be well worth it. I got it a couple weeks ago and I’m so pleased with it. Now I’m just waiting for the 24mm 1.4 GM’s to be delivered. I joined that preorder asap and I’m so excited to get it.
Great review! It's my next lens to buy!!!
Appreciate that! I'm still using mine
I like how he says, "I'm in Washington D.C." and immediately you hear sirens in the background.
Murder capital of the US.
Already have 24-105 G lens. However, if 28-75/2.8 was available at the time, I probably would have chosen 28-75/2.8 because 2.8 is always better to have than 4.0. I think.
Would have thought IQ would be the main factor; in these days of cameras having, in many cases, inbuilt OSS/IS and lens having same, need for speed, apart from shallow depth of field far, far less important than in times past.
The 24-105 is also great, better IQ and bokeh than the tamron, larger zoom range. I think I would also choose 24-105 if it were the same price as the tamron.
24-105mm dont have micro. hehe
Yup, definitely getting this lens.
Wouldn't really recommend it on a6xxx, the 2.8 is appreciated but the focal length is very far from being wide... 18105 is definitely better option
It's a full frame lens...
How is 28mm far from being wide 🤔
@@themelbourneguide8253 he's talking about it on an a6000 series camera, where it's not very wide. I still have a 16mm in my bag when I walk around with the Tamron on my a6300. Like him though, I can't live with a lens slower than a 2.8 (unless it's my wildlife lens that I shoot video with in daylight). I'm also only buying full frame lenses now, so I can also use them on another camera.
The 18-105 is not that sharp. Tamron is a much better lens.
Great review as usual. Would you say the auto-focus is good enough for video? Or would you go with the Sony 24-70 f4 if that mattered to you? Thanks
I have a 24-70mm f/4 Vario-Tessar lens which I am not crazy about. I'd like a bit better I/Q and would really like an f/2.8 aperture. I am selling my Vario-Tessar and a couple of other lenses which I seldom use. The proceeds from selling these lenses should get me pretty close to the price of the Tamron. Plan to use the Tamron on my A7iii and shoot in tandem with my A6400 wearing either a 70-200mm f/4 OSS Lens when I need reach or my 12mm f/2.0 Rokinon when I need to go wider.
Great video Dan. What picture profile did you use for the video? It looks amazing.
Thanks! Just the standard profile but I lower the contrast and sharpness and then do some tweaking in post.
Great video! The zoom transitions, is that for final cut pro or what do you do? Look buttery smooth!
Thanks Dan, great practical review.
Great video!!! That helped me a lot. Thanks
Recently ordered! Can’t wait 🔥🔥
Nice! Still using mine
Great review!
I got this when no one else had it. I found the lens in a camera shop in Auburn Alabama. I bought before I bought the Sony A7 III but that is my plan.
Beautiful work Dan, stunning video, I still adapt my Tamron 24-70 mm G1 on my Sony's it performs well with the mc11 but after a fiasco where 2 San Disk Pro extremes failed in the same camera as well as I was forced into a 50-70mm range because of the surroundings during a recent bridal prep (have 4 cams with different focal lengths), I knew this versatile focal range I needed two of, to get double the protection across 2 cameras with dual card slots. So I purchased this Tamron 28-75 mm lens, can vouch for everything you stated, almost perfect with its limitations as you stated, but for the price what a buy. My only sadness is that I had to give it to my lead photographer as he uses that range too daily, and I still prefer the 24-70 mm on my camera especially since it focuses extremely well and has a bug on the mc11 that I love when holding down the focus and turning the focus ring it switchs to focus peaking and manual focus, I wish all my lenses did that as the slightest hesitation in focus I just switch up focus peak instantly and get the shot off even in extremely challenging lighting conditions. This one focuses better overall but instead of pressing a custom button to switch modes the other is automatic and performs quicker on the fly. Anyways as usual love you and your wife's work!! Keep them coming buddy.
Appreciate that! That's interesting about the focus Peaking
Super nice review. How do you think about the quality of the photo compare to Sony 24-70 F2.8 GM lens?
Center Sharpness is on par, corner Sharpness is slightly worse, I prefer the Bokeh on the Sony and you trade the metal weather sealed build for affordable/lighter/smaller
I just have the kitlense at the moment and i definitely will grab me one of these bangers! I'm just a hobby photographer but kit is not good enough! This is the perfect lense! Not too expensive but really nice quality:) thanks
Ahhh those 4 missining mm’s compared to a 24mm... you get 650gr lens that is balanced on the camera for that compromise. But still. Though i love shooting 28mm, most my shots are between 20-35mm...
but this is sooo much cheaper than the 16-35mm 2.8 GM that i may just get it
I was impressed by the 28-75 tamron, but not as much with the tamron 17-28. Still a good lens, but love that 28-75.
What is the main reason Tamron came with 28-75mm rather than traditional 24-70mm?
Size... According to them it allowed for significant size and weight savings
Nice pics. I live near dc and my shots are nothing like that. Ha. What ND filter did you use?
Good review like always Dan. Can you do a video review on a Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Sony E and the Sony A7III? 👍
SOOOO Helpful! Thanks!
I can’t decide if I should get the Sony 24mm and 85mm or get only this Tamron...
I usually recommend getting a zoom first and spend the next few months analyzing your images to see what focal length you use the most and where you feel like you are missing. This Tamron would be a great start
Your video is amazing. Specially the transitions. Do you have a video of your editing? Thanks for this.
Would you recommend this lens for A7Riii as well? thanks for your video ;)
Would you choose the Sony 24-105 over this lens ?
Unless I could only own 1 lens, I would prefer the Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 because of the wider aperture
You didn't even breathe for your opening intro lol. There was virtually no punctuation in your speaking 😅
god I wishing youtubers would stop grading the footage from lens, just show us raw! not how you think the footage looks best!
Great video Dan! Have you tested this on the Sony a6000 series?
Is the video also the same lense or only the photos?? Great video
Thanks! All the video was shot with the Tamron lens EXCEPT the actual shots where you see the lens in the video. But all the video of the model was on the Tamron lens
Amazing video! Cant wait to see your latest video from Hawaii.
Would this compliment the A7riii or is it more suited to the A7iii? (I'm on a budget)
Certainly it's better suited to the A7III just because the Tamron is technically lower quality than something like the Sony 24-70 F2.8 GM and you are more likely to see the difference in quality on the higher resolution R series. But there is a new version of this lens coming out now with even better quality: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1658157-REG/tamron_a063_28_75mm_f_2_8_di_iii.html
Dan, I bought this lens. I absolutely love it. Which ND filter are you using with it?
Awesome! Using the PolarPro QuartzLine filters
Dan Watson I was going to ask whether or not you used an ND filter because the slow motion looked choppy. Just an observation.
Lens still suffers from focusing issue in video mode, even after upgrading firmware to V3. Video starts and lens, if was out of focus, unable to gain focus no matter where you point it, unless you press shutter button during the video.
Testing: A6500, Focus mode - AF-C, Focus Drive speed: Fast.
The same test was done with Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and it did not suffer from this issue. What does it mean? Once lens loses focus for some reason, for example you are panning via solid color wall, and then panning to a subject, subject never gets in focus unless you force it by pressing shutter button during video mode. That is not acceptable.
Another issue - it takes several turns (more than 270 degree) of the focus ring to focus from min to max. Kind of useless if using on gimbal with focus motor.
Great video Dan. I'm new to your content. Been thinking about picking up this lens for a while. Wish I had known about it before getting the 24-70 f/4
Thank you! The 24-70 is still a great lens and honestly it's still about impossible to find this Tamron in stock so don't worry too much lol
You should only purchase quality equipment once, so far as quality glass goes. Keep the high quality lens and move cameras if you wish later. I don't have a problem waiting to purchase a quality lens that I will use for years to come. Still using the L 70-200 2.8 I purchaed for my Canon FF body years ago and it will be buried withme.
Thanks Dan. when is comes back in stock I'll probably get it. I usually shoot primes but the Tamron will be great for my video work.
Did you check the sigma 24-70 art, how is it competing to the tamaron?
Ordered! Along with ND8 and UV filters. Whats your fav settings for autofocus for video btw?
Great Info!!! Great footage!!!! Thank you!!!!
Do you think there would be any real downside to using this on a 6100. When choosing a lens with no real plans on moving up to full frame should I worry about choosing a full frame lens or should I just strictly stick to apsc lenses?
Still not a bad choice for APSC although keep in mind there is no stabilization in the lens or in your camera. The Sony 18-105 F4 will give you stabilization, more range, and the only downside is you lose 1 stop on the aperture. Might be worth getting this Sony instead if you are not planning on changing to a full frame camera anytime soon: bhpho.to/3e6N4Du
How do you get such sharp images out of this? I've got the exact same setup, A7 III and this lens, but the photos I take with it are never as sharp as photos I see from other people using it. Especially when trying to focus on objects that are further away.
How is the image quality when used on the a7riii? Do you notice any softness?
Sony Alpha Blog recently published an extensive test on which lenses could maximize the resolution of the a7riv. According to their tests, this lens resolved the 24mp sensor just fine, but fell short with the a7riv.
Great video :) sir can i ask which picture profile ? The color is nice
Sure, I usually shoot standard or neutral profiles with the contrast lowered
I love Tamron and used the 24-70 on my old Canon full frame camera, great lens. The only issue(s) with the new 28-75 mm for Sony is the wall of shame and 4mm between 28mm and 24mm. I can probably live with the wall of shame results but still trying to figure out how to live with less wide angle lens.
walk back 3 feet it works
Great reviews and I have just bought one. Thanks Dan.
Awesome!!!
Trying to decide if i should get this or the 35. Im a portrait, automotive photographer and honestly ive never been in need of using zoom but idk if i should get this just in case i need it and also be able to use just 1 lens. What would you recommend?
I usually start off with making sure you have a nice zoom lens like this 28-75 and then look at what focal lengths you end up using the most on the zoom lens and later save up to buy a prime lens close to that. You might find yourself shooting 50mm more often or even wanting something wider!
Waiting to get one... out of stock everywhere. Tamron site shows stock is 6 weeks away. 😢
Thanks for this video. Subscribed
Hey Dan, would you recommend exchanging my Sigma 35mm 1.4 for this lens? I use an A7RII and want to transition more into couples/engagement style shoots. I also have the 50mm 1.8. Keep up the content!
Thanks! I probably wouldn't trade the Sigma for this unless you absolutely need a zoom lens. If you have a kit lens zoom I would instead trade that out or if you don't have a zoom at all, save up until you can ADD this to your existing kit
I'm going to be investing in an A7iii for Greece (going to see Athens, Meteora, Zakynthos, Kefalonia, Nafplio, Olympia, and Delphi so alot of landscapes and architecture plus wanting to shoot people). Would this work for all the architecture and landscapes or should I go for something like the 24-105?
Hi Dan! I need a lens for professional quality family portraits, indoor and in studio. Is this lens good enough, or should I consider the GM, or maybe the 55 1.8 prime, or maybe the Sony 24-105? What is the difference in image quality between these lenses? (not considering build) Thanks!! Love your videos and your A7iii guide!
Title is wrong. Given a choice between this and the 24-105 F4 from Sony, which would you pick as a travel one lens does all? Yes, I know the Sony is about £400 more.
thegeneral123 i was in your position too. Ended up i chose sony. I needed that extra focal length 105 vs the 2.8 for my video needs. The f4 for me was sufficient. Besides, i can remove any noise using neat video plug in.
I feel like this is a better option. I usually prefer a wider aperture over a little more range and this lens offers great quality. It's tough to find in Stock for a reason lol
Thank you for the reply. It's an interesting decision for sure. I don't currently own a Sony body as I am only on a Panasonic GX80/85 but I would like a more capable system to back up my smaller form factor M4/3 camera. I can get the A7Riii for a couple of hundred more than the A7iii. So right now, that with a good all round zoom lens and a fast prime is what I'd like. Seeing what Canon bring to the market though before even considering spending any money.
Hybrid shooter here. I do appreciate the extra reach, especially in video.
BUT for video the Tamron can get up to almost 170mm with the super 35 mode and clear image zoom which covers 99% of anything that I would shoot normally (except wildlife and sports).
For stills I find the 24-70 or 28-75 fine for most situations. I would take the f/2.8 advantage over the 105mm focal length as it makes it a much more versatile and capable lens in shooting in lower light and portraits/people shots.
How did you come to that conclusion? The bokeh seems fine to me!
Thank you I have been considering on changing over from Canon to Sony and also what lens I should purchase with that.
Hey! Sorry for the late reply. This Tarmon 28-75 would definitely be my first lens purchase for Sony especially if you are budget conscious or want to keep things small/light
that it starts from 28 instead of 24 is a big minus for me. those 4mm at the wide end make a hughe difference.
I am using it ..but it has focus problem between 50-75mm ....
Hello! Thank you for your vid.
Do you suffer from any issues from continous AF failure during recording video?
I bought mine in Philippines and it says "made in japan". With all your connections/contacts, can you please confirm if this is legit lens? Thank s a lot.
