Your best review ever. Reminded me of the old DigitalRev days. Well done and keep it up!! You almost sold me on this lens! I stopped short of the build quality and I have a feeling Sigma is in the rafters. Again, well done!!
Bro am a huge fun of yours, am from Cuba and also expecting this Wednesday my A7 iii + Tammy 28-75, I wanna thank you first for telling the world the reality of my people over there and second for the amazing review. You are a great human being
I love the video quality. The dynamic range is amazing. I feel like I'm there in person! I also appreciate the amazing content you post here! Keep it up Jason!
Sometimes I wish I had 24mm, but 28 mm range satisfies my needs most of the time. Having an extra 4mm doesn’t really justify the cost for me. Sometimes I do go “man, I wish I could go wider” but that doesn’t mean that the 28mm footage doesn’t look good. This lens is great and light and it would take a lot of justification for me to upgrade to the g master, and even then I wouldn’t bring the g master to travel
it seems like every review of this lens. the reviewer doesn't know about it's weather sealing, I saw on a Tamron website that the lens has 6 weather seal gasket rings. 5 inside the Lens and one on the mount. so it's probably as weather sealed as any other lens that says it's weather sealed, because no lens is really weather sealed, they are all just weather resistant. as far as the image quality, it's amazing how close those two images looked without pixel peeping, it seems like the GM has a little more micro contrast that you can see in things like hair. but if you weren't pixel peeping the images side by side, you would just think the Tamron image is a really nice image. if both lenses were the same price, I think it would still be a toss up of which lens to get, because the advantage of the form factor is so huge for the Tamron, and the 550 g of weight compared to 890g. for me out weighs the 24 vs 28 downside. and the close focusing ads a dimension that the GM can't give you, but when you look at the reality of the actual price difference. you would almost feel stupid buying the GM. but with that said. if you want the 2% extra micro contrast, and the 24mm and the stronger build quality than buy the GM. but I have seen a few people who posted in facebook groups saying that after a little over a year. the focus ring on the 24/70 GM started to get out of shape and was coming off the lens. and it cost good money to fix it. I own the original Tamron 24/70 VC in a Canon mount. and I bought it when it first came out maybe 6 years ago, and Never had any issues of any kind. and I love the images I get with the lens. I just wish it was as small as this new Tamron 28/75 f2.8. also the Tamron in America has like a six year warranty if you register the lens after buying it. Personally I wish that Tamron made the lens to 100% equal or even better than the GM image quality. and just charged $1000 or even $1200 instead of $800. it still would have been allot less money than the GM. but as far as the plastic build goes. when I was new to photography, I used a Nikon 18/55 kit lens for like 5 years straight. I used that lens under every condition, including blowing sandy winds and rain, and even dropping the camera, and the lens never got broke or stopped working, and that is a kit lens with zero weather sealing. so I think the build quality aspect isn't as big as some people want to act like it is. and a good plastic can actually take more abuse than some metal can. if you think about it. plastic itself is weather resistant, where metal is not, anyway the Tamron is pretty sweet for it's price. and the GM is also nice but over priced. but all top glass is over priced. but if you want a BMW you can't buy it for Honda prices. even though the Honda might outlast the BMW.
Yes I would like 24mm, but, I love the fact that the Tamron is lighter, smaller and works great on my Crane Plus. I find traveling with it is beneficial, and using it on a gimbal totally out ways the extra 4mm of width. I have a 16-35 f4 that looks after those wider needs... it too works on the gimbal and when shooting at wide angles DOF is generally less of a visual goal. Yet I can achieve blur at 35mm when shooting close up on an object. Bottom line, the Tamron is a total win for me because I’m always traveling.
One of the best reviews of lenses that I see in the last months. The information is explained fantastic, but man, your shots... Your shots are awesome! I didn't know you, and I'm shocked. Nice video! And nice lens!
Mine is supposed to come tomorrow. Form factor and price were my biggest deciding factors to go for the 28-75 and 17-28. Eventually the 70-180 too, but for now these should cover 90% of my jobs.
if Tamron made it 24mm, but more expensive, bigger and heavier, will you buy it still? I think 4mm is nice trade-off considering how light and small it is comparatively
I film weddings with my brother Max Yuryev and I’ve gotta say this is my favorite all-around lens. I use this in the studio for b-roll as well. My favorite part is the incredibly close minimal focusing distance. Definitely buy this lens.
I agree about the 28 not quite being wide enough. People forget that every mm counts as you get wider so 4mm is significant. Especially if I’m indoors where I can’t move back further at times. I’m thinking I’ll go for the 24-105 F4 cause I already have a set of primes.
amndemo I have a zeiss distagon 21mm f2.8, Sony 35mm f2.8, helios 44-2 58mm f2, Sony 85mm f2.8 as my main lenses. I sometimes put the 85 on my A6500 which gets me 135mm range when needed.
!8 - 135mm is the ideal range for me, no matter where I find myself. Add a Sigma 16mm f 1.4 DC DN, Clear Image Zoom, and you're all set for most situations.
@@JasonVong This Tamron 28-75, vs the 24-105 Sony G - I dont do video, and my A7i doesnt have IBS. - I already have the kit 28-70, but the variable aperture hurts my soul.
I have the 24-105mm f4 and prefer the wider focal length range. F2.8 is nice, but I have gotten great coverage in most light with the f4. Not quite as much bokeh, but enough, especially at 105mm. Tamron has a great lens here, but I personally don't need it right now. Might get it in the future for a backup lens in my kit. Cheers and Thanks Jason for all your hard work (and fun).
Im deciding between those two exact lenses. Im on a strict budget, but the build quality, OSS, and range is whats attracting me to the 24-105. - I have an A7i, so it doesnt have IBS, and I already have the 28-70 kit which...I dont like the variable aperture.
I decided I could just shoot higher ISO to grab that extra stop of light, especially with the A7iii's capabilities The 105 is nice for portraits, even at F4- which is a bit more forgiving with DOF in my use. I pretty much live at either short or long end.
Great job on the video. Super interesting seeing some your time in Cuba. I used to have a 28mm prime lens when using Nikon full-frame cameras. It was an odd focal length. Like you were saying, it's often not wide enough when you want a lot in the frame (though I prefer 20mm over both 24 and 28).
Great review makes it lot easier for me to buy this lens. I would prefer a cheaper and lighter lens with great picture quality. Hopefully Tamron makes 16-35mm lens soon as well.
Wow wish I seen this yesterday. I'm new to all this videography/photography and I purchased the a7riii last week and today I picked up a Zeiss 24-70 mm lens. I know id be sacrificing a bit of the wide angle if I trade in the Zeiss for the Tamron but I hear a lot more positive reviews for the Tamron
I've been a HUGE fan of Tamron since I shot them on Canon. I'm on the fence about going back to this range though. I shoot the 24-105 and find myself staying somewhere around 80-100. That 2.8 is tempting though.
Top work Jason I used this lens for Wedding video and Wedding photography together with Zeiss Batis 85mm and Sony Zeiss 16-35mm f4 and the picture quality match perfectly... Sold my 90mm macro - Tamron is perfect for those few macro details shots...
According to price this lens is so cheap that I would like to have it with Sony a6500. But having 28mm on wider side, I will definitely have to have a wider lens, Sony 16mm f2.8 or Sigma 16mm f1.4. But in case of shooting weddings or events, I will feel struggling bit due to not having Focal length fron 16mm to 28mm. But for Full frame bodies, you shouldn't have any problem in 24mm and 28mm. For ultra wide shots, get 16-35mm lens or 4mm focal length won't make that much difference
I was in Shanghai last month and came across the last one in a local mall. It was like a sign from the Tamaron gods saying, "I've been waiting for you". I haven't been this excited to get a new lens for a while. Talking to the store manager, he said they're back ordered until December 2018 in Shanghai so if it's in stock in your country, buy it! don't think, just buy it! You'll thank me and Jason later. Just my two cents, I agree with Jason with the 28mm not being wide enough. I'm 6'5 and even with Stretch Armstrong arms, I still manage to cut off my head in the frame when vlogging. Now, don't let that discourage you, vloggers, because when it comes to photos, and B-roll, this is the lens you want. I'll be sticking with this lens for a while as it provides the perfect focal length need and keeps me minimal As a back up I have my 16-35mm Zeiss F/4 for vlogging.
THANK YOU very much for this video !!! I searched the last 3 weeks for the best choice for my Sony A7SII budget Zoom lens with bokeh! This video was so helpful thanks 😍
I do think that 28 is NOT wide enough, but at the same time you can supplement this with a 16-35 in your kit, sure it is an extra lens, but I think it is a good substitute. Plus you can nearly get the Tamron 28-75 and the Sony 16-35 f/4 for the same cost as either G-Master offering alone.
We could use something faster than an f/4 in the ultra-wide range from at least one of the manufacturers (with AF and a filter thread). Hopefully sometime soon.
Great Video Jason. I think I will purchase this lens for my Sony 7R3. I also want to say that was very commendable of you mentioning to bring toys for the children.
I am heading to Salzburg in January, and have been trying to decide what to bring. Given I have used the older Tamron 28-75 on my Canon, the 28mm/24mm difference isn't a big deal. I might have to rent this lens for my trip. Great review! Thanks Jason.
Once again, very informative. I have the 24-70 GM, but, wanted to see if Tamron was a good buy. Looking at the 24-105 also. Hope you enjoyed yourself. I love all their old cars.
I don't get the "need wide angle" in a zoom argument. You are using a zoom mostly for convenience while walking around so you can snap away with out having to reach in to your bag every second. A 28-70mm is a decent focal range. If you doing a wide shot then a prime lens should be used. Landscape shots usually take time and are done on a tripod. For me personally , I stick to one focal length at any given time. It forces me to think about my composition then just snapping away. Also, sticking to one focal length allows me to develop a unique style because I began to see the world through what ever focal length I am shooting at.
If someone needs a wider shot with their zoom lens (for convenience of having a zoom lens), then you totally get the "need wide angle" argument. Why limit wide shots to prime lenses? My only prime left is a 16mm, but I'd love not having to carry it.
4mm makes a difference, not huge, but in the urbex world, it does. When you are inside an abandoned power plant(building) sometimes you can take a step back. You might fall in a hole and die.
You miss out the nearest focus distance! This alone is a good trade-off for the 4mm, not to mention the wider aperture and its low weight. You can have some nice shots with food, plants, small insects. This is a bonus for your trip. Whats more, if 28 mm is not wide enough, 24mm wouldnt do any better.
4mm matter, but it's the compromise you need to make for a lighter smaller lens. For work/pro I would get the Sony, for traveling/hobby the Tamron. For vlogging 24mm is not wide enough anyway, you should just get a 16-35mm.
Jason Vong!!!! Thank you for pointing out and showing how getting close to the camera while shooting video can cause you to lose autofocus. This is something I haven't seen anyone cover and is the only issue I have with the lens. However I think it might actually have something to do with the way it couples with the a7iii. I tried the lens on a friends a6500 and think it actually did better on the close focus moving towards the camera. I'll have to test it again though to be sure. Anyways, Thanks for the great work!
Okay Jason I’m sold. I just got the 24-105 F4 but im returning because its too big on the gimbal. I can’t even go into flash light mode. So I’m getting the Tamron 28-75 and 28mm is wide enough for me probably because I come from the 18-105 which is basically 27mm and have been able to vlog with it. I don’t have giraffe long arms though but it definitely takes a toll on my arms when holding it as far as possible.
I have the Tamron and absolutely love it but am also considering getting the 25mm Batis with the money I saved from getting the Tamron. Already own a 15mm Laowa Lens as well.
Nicholas Ho Hey, may I know what is your reason of choosing 15mm laowa instead of 16-35mm f4 sony? Cause Im planning to buy a wide lense but still debating if I need that AF from 16-35 for property videos or documentation purposes..
Love your videos, especially since I just bought a Sony. What lens and color profile did you use for this video? It looks amazing. Cuba's never looked better.
@@JasonVong Found the video just after I posted the comment. Going to try out HLG. How would you compare the Sony 16-35 F2.8 to the Tamron? Color and Sharpness as good?
hey jason tha'st my city Havana Cuba, I hope you enjoy this trip, and also very nice video..cheers OMG memories back to me almost crying in this first foto just in from of the national hotel I grew up born and rise...thank you
the biggest gripe with the reversed focus / zoom rings now I've got used to it is not being able to zoom with the hood reversed! 1st world problems but worth adding to the list of compromises!
On my Nikon D800E my go to travel lens is the Nikon 24-70 Gen1. At times that wasn't wide enough - so IMO/E yes that 4mm makes a difference. Still didn't stop me from putting the Tamron on my A7R2.
I picked the G Master 24-105 f4 over this tamron because of we used focal length 24 105 more than aperture 2.8 , and with 105 u can get nice background comparisons Still recommend getting a f1.8 lens for a real low light situations
My credit card approves this video
Hmm, I though the video was free.
Mine didnt approve my a7iii lol
Some one trade my 24-240mm lens please :)
Your work just gets better and better Jason. One of my favorites on UA-cam.

Buy the Tamron. It'll be the best $800 lens you've ever purchased. If you need to go wider than 28 mm get the Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM.
I would go for the f4 enough most of time and lighter if need wide angle
Cactus Tweeter I’d say go for the f4 16-35 considering it’s like 800-900 dollars cheaper. Unless you really need the f2.8 for your pictures
Or buy the Tamron and then buy the new 24mm f1.4 GM. That also makes sense IMHO.
@@DerekGiovanni except the 24mm GM will set you back at $1400 AND adding another weight to your bag
Do I need an adapter for this on a A7iii?

I do think that 28 is NOT wide enough, but at the same time you can supplement this with a 16-35 in your kit, sure it is an extra lens, but I think it is a good substitute. Plus you can nearly get the Tamron 28-75 and the Sony 16-35 f/4 for the same cost as either G-Master offering alone.
yep my favorite two pairings right now!
Same, hope you are enjoying/enjoyed Cuba!
Solid review brotha! Keep up the great content!
thank you!
Great review, Jason! I`m definately picking this up when it`s in stock in a couple of months.
I am heading to Salzburg in January, and have been trying to decide what to bring. Given I have used the older Tamron 28-75 on my Canon, the 28mm/24mm difference isn't a big deal. I might have to rent this lens for my trip. Great review! Thanks Jason.
Your videos are so inspiring and motivating. Thanks for this!!
Great content Man, keep it up
I'll get one of this lens sooner or later
Your reviews are the best!
Once again, very informative. I have the 24-70 GM, but, wanted to see if Tamron was a good buy. Looking at the 24-105 also. Hope you enjoyed yourself. I love all their old cars.
i have the 24-105 and i can shoot entire weddings with it (other than macro)
The first 38 seconds of this video 'Absolute TRUTH'
I just love these Potato Jet videos.
First I got to find the Sony A7 lll in stock! Crazy can’t find the camera anywhere all I seen was back ordered/ not in stock!
Good review sir. Can I know which lens did you use for filming your this vlog ?
Great review and work Jason!! Didn't know you would be in Cuba at the same time as Scott.
ya scott's team brought me on!
Thank you Jason, I will be getting this lens with either my future a7siii or a7iii. Hands down.
awesome!
Luke, did u buy it?
great video appreciate all the work you put in
Wow Cuba is such a beautiful country
Great video! You’re exactly right, I just went ahead and purchased... found one used on amazon so I skipped the 1-2 month wait!
Excellent video! So well done and Cuba is beautiful. Haven't been there yet, added to the list of places to go!!
You just made my day! 😂😂😂 "In the Frenchable..."
😂😂 quite frenchable
4mm matter, but it's the compromise you need to make for a lighter smaller lens.
For work/pro I would get the Sony, for traveling/hobby the Tamron.
For vlogging 24mm is not wide enough anyway, you should just get a 16-35mm.
I love a Hawaiian pizza, too. Meanwhile, you're killing me and my 24-70mm GM with this review. A great video, regardless.
nothing wrong with loving Hawaiian Pizza and keeping the GM 😜
Jason Vong!!!! Thank you for pointing out and showing how getting close to the camera while shooting video can cause you to lose autofocus. This is something I haven't seen anyone cover and is the only issue I have with the lens. However I think it might actually have something to do with the way it couples with the a7iii. I tried the lens on a friends a6500 and think it actually did better on the close focus moving towards the camera. I'll have to test it again though to be sure. Anyways, Thanks for the great work!
Great review. Hope you enjoyed the trip. Thx for the vid
You brought up a good point, it is almost equivalent to the 18-105mm
Returning mine too..Did'nt play well on my gimbal..
Great video! Love the editing, and I love Cuba!
Really like the look of profile you used
Thanks! HLG baby
Love your videos, especially since I just bought a Sony. What lens and color profile did you use for this video? It looks amazing. Cuba's never looked better.
HLG!
@@JasonVong Found the video just after I posted the comment. Going to try out HLG. How would you compare the Sony 16-35 F2.8 to the Tamron? Color and Sharpness as good?
hey jason tha'st my city Havana Cuba, I hope you enjoy this trip, and also very nice video..cheers OMG memories back to me almost crying in this first foto just in from of the national hotel I grew up born and rise...thank you
I sold my 24-70 GM for the Tamron. So far, no regrets. I was able to buy other camera equipment with the extra money.
the biggest gripe with the reversed focus / zoom rings now I've got used to it is not being able to zoom with the hood reversed!
I picked the G Master 24-105 f4 over this tamron
because of we used focal length 24 105 more than aperture 2.8 , and with 105 u can get nice background comparisons
Still recommend getting a f1.8 lens for a real low light situations
Super fun video! Looks like I missed out on a great time 😭😍📸🙌🏽
