About maybe 12 to 14 yrs ago (could be longer) I donwnloaded a filter to see what the deal was. Everyone around me was talking about how great they were etc. I picked a picture I thought I looked really good in to try the filter out. With in about a minute of messing around with it, when I looked at the comparison of the original pic to the filtered one I suddenly thought OMG I look horrendous in the original pic. I sat there depressed and hating myself picking apart my looks for a good hour. I then deleted the app and the filtered pic. Personally I had never had anything make me hate myself so much so quickly than the filter did. I would rather look at a bad pic of myself and laugh now than have a fake one that would make me hate myself when I look in a mirror.

As a person in my 50's, it is hard to watch yourself age in the mirror every time you wash your face or put on make-up. You see the subtle differences in your skin and how your make-up sits. So many things change! With that said, a lot of how we age is how we care for ourselves (diet, exercise) and DNA. What's disappointing is that people are so judgemental about looks & youthful appearance, & celebs have higher expectations since they have enough disposable income to combat it! We judge them about how much plastic surgery they get, or how old or overweight/underweight they are. There's really no way to win. But if someone like a KK or JLo was more honest about how they're aging, it would be refreshing to the rest of us of similar age struggling with it. I think to see yourself with a filter, then not, is a bit of a hit to the ego, hence why people are so keen on using them. Sometimes I even feel guilty using a Snapchat filter 😕 The approach to aging is up to each of us how we want to navigate this unpredictable journey, and how we feel the most confident and comfortable doing it.

Amen! I’m 50 & it’s different. Your so right about looking in the mirror & seeing the changes. Changes are just fine! But when 50 something celebrities want to put out a skin brand & have access to whatever they want? It is a bit unrealistic for the non celebrities ppl. I personally will never buy a product from anyone who uses filters in there ads. Filters & very young ppl. It would be a waste of money . Other forms of exercise like walking to the shops or work are good too. And avoiding sun damage goes a long way to keeping the skin looking good.. and always use a moisturiser with sun cream in it. All of those things are a possibility for anyone and everyone.. even if mobility impaired one can still exercise (modified of course) and eat well.

This is why i love what Wane Goss does with his make-up brand. I'm not sure if his models are completely unretouched, but he himself said that he wants people to see real skin in his campaigns. And indeed the models had pores, fine lines, bumps. To add to that his product before and afters never look like "OMG THIS IS A MIRACLE", the afters look better, but they never look very different from the original. I think none shouldn't even be ALLOWED to do ANY retouching or filters on skincare and make-up adds it's just false advertising and for some reason it's still skipped over in todays day and age. Also just to add to that, i recently was talking to a korean dude who has a large following on insta. All his pictures are that typical pale face, pore-less perfection that they love over there so much. And we ended up talking about something where he snapped a photo of his face and went "i have skin texture" and was like "yeah, well everyone does, so?". I was so confused. Like i know you're a human, I'm one too, I know we all have it it's not news to me. Am i supposed to be appalled by that? It's crazy how filters and retouching are a norm now and even if you don't want to use them, the human nature of wanting to be liked and accepted and be a part of that image just unconsciously drives you to. I do wish we would stop demonising REAL skin. This stuff gets especially daunting when you're getting older.

You discussed the expectations put on women vs. men so eloquently and without minimising men's issues, I wish more people could look at these issues calmly and rationally without pitting one gender against the other.

I absolutely understand using a filter to do things like removing acne or rosacea, because those things aren't permanent features on the face and tend to come and go (and for most people, eventually goes away altogether). But it does bother me when people use filters that completely alter their appearance so that they look like a totally different person... I just kinda feel really bad for them, and mad at social media for creating these toxic standards in the first place.

That’s all I do when I edit my client’s photos. Remove pimples, and spots that come and go, maybe a couple deep wrinkles(and wrinkles I don’t remove 100%, I use the healing tool on 70% opacity or so) and I don’t reduce texture more than 10%. I believe in very subtle and realistic enhancements.

Something that makes me sad a little is I've had people compliment me about looking the same IRL as I do in my pictures. That's how normalised filters and facetune are. People are surprised when they see someone who doesn't use them. It's a blessing on my end because there isn't weird unrealistic expectations but I can't imagine how horrible people who use filters must feel when they get shamed for not looking exactly like their pictures.

SO important to hear the bizarrely impossible standards applied women’s appearances acknowledged. Recognizing unacceptable treatment of one group does NOT negate problems faced by other groups. Surely we should be capable of of holding more than one concept in our brains at a time! I really appreciate your gentle persistence in calling out the fake and the unfair.

The Bold Glamor not only adds a “beautifying” filter, it adds an “uglyfying/old” filter when the filter allegedly “lifts”. No one is talking about this, but I know I don’t look like what it shows me when the Bold filter is off.
Basically TikTok uglifies people at baseline before they apply a filter, so it makes them feel old and insecure and dependent on those stupid filters.

James, you should really get that eye *twitch* looked at..I'm *concerned*. Within the past year I started getting into skincare and maybe even getting into makeup now, but really, as long as my face functions and allows me to live, I'm happy. I think media for far too long has put the focus on skincare/makeup as all about looks and youth instead of what I use it for, self-care and expression. It is a bit sad that with sns, we are part of this media. Thanks for the video, always enlightening!

I just turned 39 and became a grandmother just before my birthday (I was a teen parent). I am definitely starting to feel the 'women of a certain age' thing. I'm not as worried about the wrinkles on my forehead or the baby crows feet around my eyes, I know those can be remedied with a good skin care routine or if I wanted I could have minimally invasive botox or fillers. The part that bothers me is my neck starting to visibly age. Right where the underside of my chin starts to curve into my neck the skin is getting thin and crepe-y. I know face care products can slow it, but I can't reverse it without surgery. I know I don't look bad and I never thought I'd be the kind of person that would even think about how my skin is aging, but it hit me like a runaway train.

Almost 30 years as a design/art director in marketing & advertising, the amount of editing and lack of transparency is nauseating and it's not just on people. Why do I stay? So I can find ways to keep the brands I work with as honest I can. People deserve that, so they make informed decisions. I don't care what decision they make, just that they have the ability to do it with honest information.
That's my biggest beef with many of the influencers, celebrities and beauty companies. Disclose it, be honest...every time. This definitely includes JLo. I think she's gorgeous the way she is, don't care she uses filters, just a lack the lack transparency, especially since we all know they are used.
