    The butterflies are on the Disney LA dress because of Ella’s connection and scene with her father in the beginning of the film with a butterfly. So in a way, with the butterflies and the dress having been her mother’s, she is bringing her parents to the ball with her. I find it so sweet.

    So when she talks about “Into the woods” Cinderella. That movie is based off of the original Brothers Grimm version of Cinderella, and in the story she says “Shake and quiver, little tree, Throw gold and silver down to me.” She wears a gold and silver dress and her shoes are embroidered with silk and silver. So the dress wasn’t supposed so be like the Disney version, but the original telling of the story.

      The Disney dress is based on the Charles Perrault version of the Cinderella fairy tale with a silver and gold dress and glass slippers that was published before the Grimm's version.

      @@michaelquelet9603 having studied both the Grimm's and Peraults Donkeyskin, the 1950s was actually based on the Grimm's Brothers. I think it was put last partly because of the lack of structure. A ball gown needs to have crinolines or, at the very least, some petticoats. You should not clearly see the outline of the legs under the skirts, makes it look awkward, especially when they're dancing. The way the skirt flops listlessly when she sits was very off putting. If you are going to use limp fabrics, then you really need to put structure under them to give them some shape. The color was ... an interesting choice. If you're going for forest tones, then commit to that, if you're going for gold, commit to that. Don't waffle halfway between the two. All in all, it looks like a dress that too many people had input into and that no one person had a vision for.

      The butterflies almost can't be seen. They are shown in the shoes just once, and they do not catch the eye in the rest of the scenes, where the different hues of translucent fabric and the crystals catch the eye. I didn't even see them after their first appearance. The hues of the dress steal the show.

    Hi, I'm from the Czech Republic. Our Cinderella, which you finally rated as sixth in the ranking, is based on period drawings. The dress is from the Gothic period, so the 12th to 15th century. She has her hair uncovered because she's not married, but once she gets married, she'll have to wear her hair under a bonnet.

    • @beth12svist
      @beth12svist Рік тому +9

      The whole style of the film is more like 15th-16th century. A lot of the clothes at the court/ball are very late 15th-early 16th century in style. Cinderella's dress is more fantasy than anything, but with its high waist and simpler silhouette, it's definitely inspired by 15th century styles.
      And it makes a lot of sense to me as a stylistic choice, because that was a big period in Czech history, with a lot of change, unprecedented level of religious freedom (still limited, but definitely unprecedented), elected non-hereditary kings... The music at the ball also echoes that period to a degree, it's definitely part of what makes it work so well even if you're not consciously aware of it.

    • @Calucifer13
      @Calucifer13 8 місяців тому

      The period in which the movie is set is in between 1470 to 1490, likely 1480. The pink dress is NOT period, and the gowns at the ball are a mishmash of that period and maybe like 20 years later, but they are all still from the early Renaissance period. In England, for comparison, it would take place in the Wars of the Roses period, likely at the end of Margaret of Anjou´s and Henry VIth´s period.

    "3 nuts for Cinderella" dress - if you are interested in period fashion and go further than just 18th/17th century, you can tell that this movie was supposed to be set some time around the late 14th/ early 15th century in bohemia. I am not saying that its 100% accurate, but it gives me that vibe (although the collar could be lower). Also I think its more about the colour of the dress. If you know this movie, you can notice that Cinderella is wearing darker, more plain colours like grey and brown, but once she gets the magical chestnuts, every piece of fabric coming out of it is somehow lighter and colourful. Like her green hunting dress with 2 different stockings, pink ball gown and finally her wedding dress which I think is cherry on top in this film. I also love how Cinderella and the prince dont fall in love with each other right away, and how they tease each other.

    The thing about Three nuts for Cinderella is that I don't think the ballgown is supposed to be the best/grandest/prettiest one. That's the wedding dress at the end for the grand finale to complete her transformation into a princess. But the ballgown is still very pretty and flowy and is a great contrast to the lady of the house and her daughter, who are dressed in real tacky ensembles. The sheer layers then help to make her look like a ghost or mirage when she runs away, as if she was never real, while the prince goes bonkers trying to find her.
    Thinking about it, I haven't seen it in a while despite growing up with it. I should watch it this Christmas!

    “Into the Woods” was actually the most accurate of them all. They focused on the Grimm's original Cinderella tale. In the tale, the ball lasted 3 nights, and in each she received a different dress. The golden is very accurate considering the old illustration books. The Into the Woods version is more accurate than Disney version and all of them. (also, the stepsisters cut their toes to fit the crystal shoe, which actually happens in the original tale.)

      The other argument is that in being told the tale, Perrault misheard the storyteller, but even then, "vair" would not have been a common term in the time the story was transcribed. It was a word that had pretty much fallen out of use. It's possible that it was being used to suit the mythological feel of the story, but that's a question that will ultimately never be answered. But I also generally find the costumes of the film beautiful, and I love that she has a veil - it gets rid of the horrible "why can't the Prince remember her face that's so weird" fiasko. As fir the significance of her blue-silver-pink ballgown: She tells the owl that guard her sparce belongings that her father had said once she'd _ride to her first Ball like a Husar_ and that her mother had promise to sew her _a beautiful dancing dress with a veil and train and pink dancing shoes to go with it_ so basically the magic hazelnuts gave her the dress her dead mother had imagined for her when she was still alive.

    I LOVE that you mention Czechoslovakian Cinderella adaptation! I watch the Czechoslovakian version every Christmas as it's a national tradition. I couldn't find many details about the dress, but the patterns are reminiscent of traditional folklore in Slovakia and Czechia. In the context of the movie, Cinderella here is very boyish and an excellent hunter making her seem more "rough" and skilled than other fairytale versions, so giving her a dress that seems girly not only with color but also in the movement of the fabric was a sign of her transformation and showing her more womanly side. It is excellent work by the costume designers as before she has a hunter dress and looked "like a man" and now she seems very delicate with floating dress. White color dresses are heavily featured in folklore, but pink is rarer giving it an exclusive feel. On a personal note, this movie is a stand-alone for me, and I never tried to compare it with other cinderella movies or adaptation. Generally, growing up in Slovakia, I can say that our film adaptations of many fairytales are more down to earth and incorporate less glammed up concept, as many of the fairytales comes from European folklore, also all of our characters have a lot of depth and females are generally strong characters. I appreciate more Hollywood-ish representation, but it somehow pale in comparison in my childhood mind (as I watch them very rarely now) it seems like there was so much going on for the protagonists. Maybe that's why the Ever After is another very popular version of Cinderella in Slovakia. Thank you for the video!

    Just to complete your info about czech version of Cinderella - the costumes are designed very thoroughly for all the actors in the renaissance style of dresses, that´s why you dont see your typical torso of 19th century woman dress there. And most importantly - all the costumes in this movie are designed by Theodor Pištěk - close coworker of Milos Forman, who also won Oscars for his costume designs in the famous Forman’ s movie Amadeus...
