i love tiana’s blue dress at the beginning of princess and the frog. i love her green dress at the end of course but, her blue one had a sense of elegance and sadness that really fit the scene and the character at the time. it’s also just so gorgeous and sparkly 🦋✨

Petition for an animated version of this series. Anastasia's blue opera gown has, as another commenter put it, has had me in a chokehold ever since I first saw it almost three decades ago.
While I find the green dress more visually interesting and I "like it" better, the smooth silhouette and cold colour of that blue dress really fits Tiana's strict and hardworking personality
@TalkAsSoftAsChalk I know, right? I mean, don't get me wrong; the purple ball dress was stunning, but the blue and pink casual dresses she wears are far better. They also fit her character better - modern and classy, but also hopeful and fantastical.
I'm *so* happy to see The Secret of Moonacre (2008) and La Belle et La Bete (2014) being mentioned. Underrated movies with gorgeous costume designs all around, even on the background characters! 💙
As soon as I saw Maria’s dress in the thumbnail I knew i was going to watch this video, the beauty and the beast feature was an unexpectedly perfect inclusion
Though it's not on the list, and is technically Indigo, I adored Kat's prom dress in "10 Things." It's elegant and sophisticated, just like her, and the simple pearls and floor length contrast with her sister Bianca's pink, floaty, social style. 👗💙
I never heard of Donkey Skin before and now I am obsessed with the costume design of this movie! She really looks like a living Barbie with those dresses
Cinderella 2015 is literally amazing in just about every aspect, still to this day my favourite live action remake from Disney so far. Cinderella's iconic blue dress is way better than Belle's dress in the Beauty and The Beast remake
Idk how they messed up so bad with live action belle when they've made masterpieces like cinderellas ball gown. Belles dress in the live action remake is too modern while simultaneously looking like a hot mess. While cinderellas dress isn't nessicarly historically accurate it's still beautiful and flattering. Cinderellas has the gorgeous royal blue and these embedded butterflys on the collar and it's sparkly and magical like a fairytale dress is supposed to be. While belles is just layered in the wrong way and it doesn't really stick out in any particular fashion. And it's not reflective of that time period either
Thank you for the Ten Commandments and more specifically Nefertari love. She has been one of my favorite cinema characters since I was a kid. A real Lady Macbeth type, she was incredibly ahead of her time in terms of complex interesting female characters.
Ever since I initially watched "Cinderella 2015", I have coveted the gorgeous, radiant blue gown. It doesn't look like it was the most comfortable to wear, but Lily James really looks like a princess in it.
Lily James' stunning Cinderella dress will forever be my favourite blue ballgown. It is gorgeous and truly exudes the "Disney Magic" they were trying to achieve. The 2015 Cinderella is one of the few live-action remakes I thoroughly enjoyed. Even though it wasn't a musical, it still managed to stay mostly faithful to its source material, and the end result truly felt magical.
I always really liked the first dress Alice wears in the 2010 live action Alice in Wonderland, and then the one where she shrinks small enough to fit in the teapot (the one with the giant flower) 💙 but the 2015 Cinderella dress is still just 💙💙💙💙💙💙
For purple, you absolutely MUST include Aiwariya's lilac purple lehenga in the song "Chand Chhupa Badal Mein" from the movie "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam". It is absolutely ICONIC! Filmed in a night time scene, her costume is covered in tiny silver beads that sparkle like stars! The dupatta is so sheer and ethereal, with hundreds of glittering sequins scattered across it, like she has draped herself with the night sky. Against the dark blue backdrop, the lilac color manages to both stand out, and still evoke the stars in the sky.
Some beautiful selections! Here are a few that I would add that I adore: The glittery evening gown in 1997's "Anastasia" (her blue travel dress is also charming~) The military-esk coat-dress at the end of 2010's "Alice in Wonderland" Rose has a romantic blue-velvet number that I love in "Titanic" Delysia's day dress and hat from "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day
Even though I've managed to branch out a bit with colors style-wise, blue is still one of my favorites. Some of the earliest films I remember watching as a kid featured that color style-wise. The three that come to mind are Aurora's royal blue dress from 1959's Sleeping Beauty, Anastasia's opera dress from the 1997 animated film, and Claudia's blue dress that matches Madeleine's green one in the transformation scene in Interview with a Vampire! 👌👌👌
This was such a great video, and I love that you highlighted some pretty obscure gems! Blue dresses- Shirley Jones' initial blue dress in Oklahoma!. The blue dress that Meg first wears and older Amy later wears in the 1990s Little Women. Oo, and Anastasia's blue ball dress! For purple- Bernadette Peters in the Brandy version of Cinderella, Rita Moreno's "America" dress in West Side Story, and Marilyn Monroe's dress in How to Marry a Millionaire.
I love navy dress from Fantastic Beasts that Queenie wears the first time we meet her. So glad you included House of the Flying Daggers. Such exquisite costumes.
Purple dresses: Rose in Titanic Effie in Hunger Games Clara in Back to the Future III Gracie after the makeover in Miss Congeniality. Julianne in My Best Friend's Wedding
oh man i love your videos. I am greatly obsessed with the diversity of aesthetics in all forms of art including fashion and your content brings that to me in a perfect blend of visual representaion, education and entertainment. i definetly did not expect the crazy rich asians dress to make it into the list because i always thought that not many others besides myself saw its, in a lack for better words, "value". I am EXTREMELY EXCITED for the purple episode as it is my favourite colour in almost all shades of the spectrum and i will always have specific associations with it in any context. For purple dresses in cinematic history i personally immediatly think of 1961's West Side Story where Anita (Rita Moreno) wears this beautiful lavender dress for the "i like to be in america" number.
I know guys aren't always "supposed" to be into costume design like this, but it's one of those things I've appreciated since I was very young. Especially the colors and the craftsmanship behind everything. One of my favorite is Rose's Sunday dress that also factors into the "I'm Flying" scene. I always thought it was the perfect shade of blue. Not too light, not too dark, and I really loved the velvet detailing as well. Great contrast with her red hair and pale skin. 👏👏👏
@@DMovieman Precisely, anyone can appreciate all the detail that goes into costuming a character, and reflecting their personality. The same goes with makeup, and how the character would style themselves.
baby, you're "supposed to" like whatever you like. that's natural. the corruption comes from those fearful people who would hate you and punish you for your taste
THANK YOU for mentioning La Belle et La Bete… I feel like no one has heard of it and it has the most STUNNING costuming. I am obsessed with it. It’s such a gorgeous film (with the exception of the pound puppy gremlin dogs… which are so… so weird.) I couldn’t possibly pick a favorite dress. They’re all incredible
Was not expecting to see Donkeyskin and Moonacre on here!!! I was literally talking about how legendary the costumes were for donkeyskin to my roommate last night too.
I just remembered Sandra bullock’s miss congeniality dress when she gets her makeover. That paired with the light purple jacket she wears to the pageant orientation was always a favorite.
The whole costume design of the Secret of Moonacre was stunning. Even the background characters looked expensive and well thought out. I think about this movie a lot especially since it was the first enemies to lovers that I watched.
IKR, I re-watched it myself a couple years ago, and realizing that Maria and Robin were one of my first introductions to the ETL and "falling for the mark" tropes (in kids' terms) was quite a discovery. 😆
I saved so many of the costume designs as fashion inspo. A genuinely gorgeous movie right up my alley. I liked looking at it more than absorbing the story lol
The costume designs for the Korean film Love, Lies is very interesting as it takes both modern styles and traditional Korean hanbok with interesting patterns
Great video! I would add Brandy's version of the Cinderella blue gown, and two costumes worn by Julie Andrews: the light blue chiffon dress from the party/dance scene in The Sound of Music (which marks a turning point in her character and relationship with the Captain), and the dark blue coat/skirt ensemble from Mary Poppins, unless that doesn't count as a dress.
!!! I read the Secret of Moonacre as a child! I had not thought about it in years, except for one quote from the beginning. The MC, her governess, and her dog are riding in the carriage on the way to Moonacre. They are all miserable but trying to make the best of it. The narration says that there are three types of people in the world: people who comfort themselves by thinking of their clothes, people who think of books, and people who think of food. And that each of the individuals in the carriage was one of the three. I think about this all the time.
It's a shame that Deepika's blue saree in Badtameez dil didn't make it to the list. That outfit is so iconique and still serves as an inspiration for so many girls as their farewell outfits. It is a whole phenomenon.
I never thought I'd see What A Girl Wants mentioned outside my own house. 😂 It'd be super interesting to see you guys do a fashion analysis of the movie.
FINALLY a "donkey skin" shoutout on this channel 😍 i can't tell you how many times i (re)watched this movie as a kid, i was absolutely captivated by the costumes, i wanted to be catherine SO BAD. the whole movie is a delight, so simple in its storyline yet so charming in its execution. i wish i could watch it again.
You have no idea how hard I gasped when I saw that you included the Secret of Moonacre! Ive loved that film ever since I was little and it receives next to no recognition; thank you so much for including it 🥰
Anne Baxter's wardrobe in the Ten Commandments has had me in a chokehold my entire life, every piece she wears is incredible and I wish I had the talent to recreate every last one of them.
I never comment but omg I am SO happy you are talking about Donkey Skin !! It's one of my favorite movies, I fell in love with it when I was a child and I've always marvelled at the costuming ☺I wish more people knew about it, it's such a beautiful and charming movie 🌹and the purple dress of the fairy godmother is just gorgeous
I am so glad the blue dress from Beauty and the Beast 2014 was included. This movie has so many beautiful costumes, but the blue dress really stands out 😊
@@petrusnelson4248 Yes, the ivory dress has breathtaking smocking. It's incredible to see what the production of this movie has done with less than 30% of the budget of the 2017 Disney version 😅
Oh my goodness you said purple and I immediately thought of Daphne from the live action Scooby Doo movies, her outfits were so fashionable and I still want them today!
I liked the blue dress at the end of Mirror Mirror, and the blue dresses in Poor Things, that each reflect Victoria and Bella, Rose’s pale blue dress in Titanic when it sinks, and the blue Cinderella dress that Brandy wore, that pale blue looked so pretty with her dark skin tone.
The blue matching dresses from the “Sisters” song and dance number in White Christmas have to be the most iconic blue dresses in cinema for me. It’s a staple movie from every Christmas of my childhood. I love how the dresses are identical, but manage to fit both Vera Ellen and Rosemary Clooney’s different body types beautifully.
I love the extensive background you include about the costume! My favorite blue film dress might be from the mediocre film, Becoming Jane. Anne Hathaway as young Jane Austen wears a simple linen dress in a beautiful deep indigo blue that is just the perfect balance of rustic, elegant, ingenue and philosopher. It took it from "Anne Hathaway in a 1790s costume" to "Jane Austen between youth and adulthood." And of course the color looks stunning on Hathaway.
Belle’s blue dress in the animated Beauty and the Beast is probably my favorite from movies I’ve seen. And the fact that she’s the only person in the village who wears blue is a good visual detail, showing how she’s a fish out of water among the villagers. I don’t hate the live action version of the dress as much as other people did, but I do agree the lack of thought put into the remake’s costume design overall left a lot to be desired.
I would've included the Beauxbatons uniform from Harry Potter. It's technically a dress. At least, the girls wear a blue dress as part of it, and it's definitely unique.
I love all the choices you picked (okay I would have added White Christmas and To Catch A Thief, but that’s just me). Especially loved that you mentioned Secret Of Moonacre, it wasn’t a great adaptation of the book but the costumes were amazing. One issue I always had with the beautiful Marie Antoinette dress is that in real life the dress the French court first gave Marie to wear didn’t fit her properly, which makes sense because they were dressing someone they’d never met before. Same with her wedding dress, in real life Marie had to hold it up while kneeling in front of the priest so she didn’t accidentally flash everyone. I kinda wish the movie had alluded to that, it would’ve highlighted how the French court mistreated Marie. As for your future purple video, some of my favorites are West Side Story, Hello Dolly, Nutcracker And The Four Realms, Happy Go Lovely, Miss Congeniality and The Great Gatsby
Oh my gosh I've been trying to find The Secret of Moonacre for years now! I watched it all the time as a child and I would faintly remember bits of the plot, but it wasn't until this video I learned the name. The whole time I was wondering why the characters seemed so familiar😅
As some comments have said, the Anastasia blue dress is also my favorite, and I feel like the recreation for the stage musical is one of the best blue dresses ever created
I still love all the dresses, but what about the blue “Sisters” dresses in White Christmas? The movie is my childhood, and the dresses are gorgeous!! The entire movie is beautiful
I believe Meridas dress in the movie is more blue tones while her promotional dress of the same design is greener to enhance her hair on merchandise, similar to how Cinderella’s dress is silver in the original film but blue on dolls and artwork!
for the purple dresses video, you should defenitely consider the rich purple gown Kate Blanchett wears in Elizabeth The Golden Age, its like the most purple dress ive ever seen in a movie 😄
I know it's animated, but Anastasia's blue opera dress still has me in a chokehold twenty years after seeing it for the first time.
maybe she could do an animated version of this, how about Elsa's iconic blue dress from Frozen.
Highly recommend looking up the one from the Broadway musical, it's wonderful.

I really love Giselle's blue floral dress in the "That's How You Know" sequence from Disney's 2007 _Enchanted_ .
I'm very surprised that it wasn't included. For me that dress was better than her final purple gown.

It's one of my favorite movies, I fell in love with it when I was a child and I've always marvelled at the costuming ☺I wish more people knew about it, it's such a beautiful and charming movie 🌹and the purple dress of the fairy godmother is just gorgeous
The fact this came out as I was watching Cinderella 2015 🥹🩵💗
Neat, perfect timing, right?!
@@trinaq exactly perfect timing 💗🩵
I am so glad the blue dress from Beauty and the Beast 2014 was included. This movie has so many beautiful costumes, but the blue dress really stands out 😊
For me it's always the gold and ivory dress with the floral tiara. That dress alone puts the yellow bland live action Disney dress to shame. 😂
@@petrusnelson4248 Yes, the ivory dress has breathtaking smocking. It's incredible to see what the production of this movie has done with less than 30% of the budget of the 2017 Disney version 😅
Do you know where the French version of Beauty and the Beast is streaming? It's hard to find foreign films except on Netflix sometimes.
@@strawberrylime33 It once was on Amazon Prime, but I think it's still available on HBO Max
Mr. India is like one of my favourite Hindi movies.
Mogambo Kush hua.
Grace Kelly's blue dress in "to catch a thief" is one my favs
Oh my goodness you said purple and I immediately thought of Daphne from the live action Scooby Doo movies, her outfits were so fashionable and I still want them today!
Candy coloured delight is the perfect way to describe Marie Antoinette
My personal favorite blue dress is Yvaine's dark blue dress in Stardust 💙 the one she gets out of Captain Shakespeare's wardrobe!
I would love if you made a whole video about Secret of Moonacre. No one ever talks about that movie, but the costumes are so good!!
OMG the secret of moonacre was one of my favorite random movies as a kid, it’s inclusion here makes my heart happy🥰
95-96 little women- the dress that meg wears in the beginning that you show! I love that dress
Thank you for continuing these videos. This is my favorite series on this channel.
Cannot tell you how obsessed I was with the secret of moonacre as a kid, I somehow consistently forget the title tho so thank u for reminding me lmao
I giggled at seeing Donkey Skin (1970) and 2014's La Belle et La Bete side-by-side in the list. 😆
For me, the dress worn by Maria the pianist at the begining of Death of Stalin is one of the best blue dresses in film history--so pretty
this is one of my favorite video series!! love all of these!
The secret of moonacre 😭😭😍😍😍🦋🦋🦋🦋
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEASE do a special on animated films!!!! I want to see some stop motion dresses!
I will always love Michelle Pfeiffer's blue dress in Scar Face, iconic and breathtaking
I also think one worth mentioning is the blue Christmas dress from the American Girl Felicity movie. Not exactly ornate but still gorgeous
I would've included the Beauxbatons uniform from Harry Potter. It's technically a dress. At least, the girls wear a blue dress as part of it, and it's definitely unique.
Thank you so much for talking about Secret of Moonacre!! It's a sweet little film that no one talks about 💛
Super excited you included the French Beauty and the Beast. That movie took my breath away.
The last time I saw it, it was on Netflix...
I feel you, gurl, 3:38. It happens to me when people cosplay Merida and do a BLUE dress when Merida's is GREEN.
Saw moonacre and Olivia Wilde nodded HEAVILY
Love this format! Can’t wait for the Pink dresses 💖💖💖
I’m so happy you included moonacre!!!
IM SO HAPPY YOU INCLUDED THE SECRET OF MOONACRE NO ONE KNOWS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT BUT ITS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES ❤❤❤
